An Heir Comes to Rise #3

A Throne From the Ashes

Rate this book
As darkness descends, two destinies will merge. But as embers fly, one may rise from the ashes.

A KINGDOM…

Far from the land she knows, Faythe is beckoned toward the secrets of her heritage. Through trials of her name and a challenge to her claim, does she have what it takes to rule? Faythe bears a future that haunts; Reylan harbors a past that lingers. At his side, what ignited in her heart is kindling, but letting her guard fall could break them…or make them stronger.

A QUEST…

Now faced with a far deadlier evil than the king, a higher calling seems determined to turn the hourglass on Faythe’s quest to save Ungardia. But she soon learns time isn’t the only thing working against her. Darkness is rising, history is stirring, and the hunters are about to become the hunted.

A DESTINY…

For fate cannot be outrun. Faythe’s powers are manifesting beyond her control, and if she can’t save herself, no one can. Defying destiny is not without consequence, yet Faythe may be willing to pay the highest price of all to forge a path to true freedom–for her kingdom, and for the ones she loves.

DNF @7%, the start of the fourth chapter. I'm not going to give this one a rating, since I barely even started it.

First things first,I don't leave this whole rant because I have a major crush on SJM and I'm a crazed fan. Yes, I like her books, but that's not the point. The point is that as a reader I feel robbed and lied to and decieved. It should've been in the blurbs of all these books, that they were Throne of Glass 2.0 or as I like to call it, Throne of Glass from Walmart.

I'm giving up on this series and this author for good. It's not worth it. Her writing style might be good, but everything else is just a disaster.

All it took was a couple of chapters to strengthen and solidify my opinion that there's nothing original about the An Heir Comes To Rise series.

If you've read my previous reviews, you already know my issues with it. Most important of all, the humongous similarities it has with Throne of Glass by SJM.

I can take every single character I've read about so far and find their counterpart in ToG. And this is also true for the plot, the powers these characters have, the villain. Almost everything.

This book's first chapter - not the prologue - starts with introducing the reader to a new character, which I can't even remember her name. What I do remember though is that she is portrayed almost exactly like Manon Blackbeak with her cold demeanor-lack of feelings/remorse, and killing humans for sport etc. She even has iron nails. I repeat : SHE EVEN HAS IRON NAILS. I don't remember if they were part of her anatomy or if they could be removed like a clothing item, but that is not the point. The point is, it's freaking obvious to everyone and their grandmother who has ever read ToG, where you were "inspired" from. Also, this Manon Blackbeak wannabe is made out to seem like cold and remorseless and dangerous and whatnot, but there is room for improvement (just like the real deal, the real Manon). Ms. Peñaranda wasn't so subtle about that, as she wasn't subtle about anything else she clearly copied from SJM.

There are also two new characters, Reylan's companions, who are like Rowan's Cadre or Rhys's brothers Cass and Az.

I'm trying not to be to hard on judging this book, because I didn't read it and I dont know how these two things I mentioned will be explored later on, but from what I've read in the last two books I'm pretty certain I know.

It might not be blantant copy and paste of sentences/paragraphs/passages of Throne of Glass, in my book though this is plagiarism. The characters, the plot, some artifacts, meddling gods, prophecies, greater destiny, things that have happened in general in this series have also happened ToG. There are changes here and there but the core always remain the same. If you've read one, you've read both (one is obviously better and the other is a watered down version that tries too hard to be as good as its predecessor).

I, too, have read books that inspired me and made me want to someday write something of equal value and impact, but I've never thought "Hey, what if I just take the whole story this person wrote and change it here and there, but I'll keep everything the same because it worked for them and I want that too?". Nope. And even if I did that, I'd claim it as a fanfic and post it on Ao3. I certainly wouldn't publish it and sell it for money.

Many people have read this series and loved it. Some of those people have also read ToG and don't mind the obscene amount of similarities with the later. In fact they love Peñaranda's books because of it. Good for them. I don't judge them.

Me, on the other hand, feel deceived by something like that. I want to read a new story, go on a new adventure, meet and love and hate and root for new characters. I'm not here to read something I've already read x20 times.

Now, I understand that plots and tropes get recycled and used again and again. That doesn't excuse what happens in these books. Because it's not just recycling. It's copying.

Let's take Throne of Glass by SJM and the From Blood and Ash series by JLA. Both of these series use the exact same recipe. Super special girl with unimaginable and vast power (close to a god), a prophecy, gods and deities and whatnot, a destiny already set for the girl, a quest and so on and so on. If you take these components aside though, they have nothing in common. Tropes? Yeah, sure they might have tropes in common and other minor things, but everything else is done in a completely different way.
Never once did I read From Blood And Ash for the first time and was like "Didn't Aelin do something like that?" "Wasn't Dorian's father possessed too?" "Weren't they experimenting on people with magic in ToG too? Oh, yes they did." "Weren't there also hidden passages beneath the Glass castle? And is that sentient thing supposed to be like Mort, but it's different because it's not a doorknob?" "Didn't Nehemia use a staff too? Because it was the weapon of choice in Eyllwe?" No, I never had those thoughts.

Do you want to know were this happened though? In Peñaranda's series. Every fucking thing that happened, I could find it in Thorne of Glass. EVERY SINGLE THING.

That is not ok, that is not fine, that is not acceptable. I tried to overlook it, but I just can't. Have some originality woman, Jesus Christ!

And like I said before, it doesn't matter that it's not word for word. That doesn't make it ok. It's still copying something someone else wrote before you.

I absolutely adored this book.

Each installment seems to intricately weave new layers of the narrative, introducing fresh characters, perspectives, and emotional depth. The character development was exceptional, and I found the pacing to be just right - it struck a balance between a rich plot and allowing the emotions of the characters to breathe and resonate with the reader.

Faythe's internal struggle is portrayed realistically, showing that her journey toward self-acceptance and understanding will take time. She's a young character navigating profound changes rapidly, and her emotional evolution is portrayed authentically. The struggles she faces are relatable and serve to make her story even more engaging and genuine. The way the fae characters embrace Faythe without prejudice or treating her any less for being human is a testament to the power of true friendship. Their willingness to protect and stand by her, despite only knowing her for a mere two months, exemplifies the loyalty and support one would hope for in a friend. It adds a layer of depth to the narrative, portraying a sense of unity and acceptance that enhances the overall story and makes it even more captivating.

As for the introduction of spicier elements in the plot (FINALLY), I believe it was done tastefully and added an extra layer of tension and intrigue. The buildup was well-executed, and the scenes were handled with a sense of intimacy without crossing into vulgarity. In the broader context of fantasy literature, these elements were quite mild and fitting, enhancing the overall narrative.

Faythe and Reylan make an incredible team, their synergy and strength together are truly unmatched. The level of steaminess in their interactions is quite intense, adding an electrifying dimension to their relationship. But what truly sets this story apart is the remarkable connection one feels towards Faythe, Reylan, and the circle of friends that surround them.

Hello Nightwalkers!

Book three, A THRONE FROM THE ASHES coming 02.22.22!! (You can’t forget that date.)
I want to share updates with you along with what to expect in the next instalment of the Heir Comes to Rise series!
As the series transitions from Young Adult to New Adult content I want to make my readers aware this third book includes some explicit scenes. It is NOT a spicy book, but rather a book with spice. I anticipate there will be some level of this going forward in the series. All I ask is that you keep in mind the ’spice’ is not plot point for any book in this series and everyone’s sensitivity levels on this is very different. I will only write these scenes as a means to enhance certain plot/character arcs.

First update 09/19/21:
Drafted! The book is fully drafted with several rounds of self-edits, is being beta read, and will be off for editing beginning October. NOBODY PANIC.
Follow me on Intstagram (ccpenaranda.author) and TikTok (ccpenaranda96) where I will be sharing character arts, teasers, and interacting with readers!

Thank you so much for being on this wild journey with me. I couldn’t do it without your enthusiasm and support. <3

I've tried to ignore the similarities of the characters and plot of the first two books to other YA fantasy books (mainly SJM's Throne of Glass), but I can't pretend it's not happening any longer.

Don't get me wrong, I love these books and the characters and their stories, BUT that's because they are almost exactly the same as the books of different authors I'm in love with!

“I’m sorry you shouldered that burden alone […] But you’re not alone anymore—never again.”

This will be a semi-spoilery review! So if you want to go in to this book totally blind then look away now. I just need to fangirl a little while keeping my thoughts on this book as vague as possible.

First up: CONTENT WARNINGS
Chloe has made it clear in her marketing that this book does go from YA to NA in rating. The smut scenes in this book are not ‘fade to black’ as depicted in A Queen Comes to Power. There are sex scenes on page, and yes they are explicit. Spice rating, I’d say it hits pretty darn close to the scenes you see in A Court of Mist and Fury. There’s also depictions of violence and death.

Now, let’s talk TROPES. 😏

• Hardcore rivals to (maybe??) lovers
• Hate sex
• Hurt/Comfort
• Bed sharing
• “Touch her and die!”
• And last, but certainly not least…MATES.

And now, a little bit of fangirling about the story itself. This book is easily my #1 favorite book I’ve read this year. With a whole new cast of characters introduced, ATFTA dives deeper into the plot and lore. More secrets are uncovered, and questions you may have had from the first two books are answered. And above all else, this book sets the stage for what’s to come in the second half of this series.

Faythe and Reylan remain my heart and soul. I didn’t think I could love them any more than I did in AQCTP. There’s so much of them in this it’s hard not to feel greedy and want more of them after you’ve finished. I went in with high expectations, and came out with more than I asked for. Plus some!

Nik and Tauria…They are the slow burn of this series. That’s all I will say about that.

Zaiana and Maverick are easily my new favorite characters and I CANNOT WAIT to see more of them in the future books!!

All in all, nothing can prepare you for what Chloe cooked up for us readers. I cried. A LOT. Keep those tissues on hand, you will need them. This book shredded my heart and rejuvenated me all within a matter of pages. Brace yourself, enjoy the ride, and you’ll be heavily rewarded. 🖤

“Until the end of days, Reylan Arrowood.”
“Maybe even longer, Faythe Ashfyre.”

A Throne from the Ashes is the third installment in the An Heir Comes to Rise series. This review won't be long but I don't know if it's me or the direction of the story, I'm losing my interest in it.

It could also be the new POV as I'm not invested in Zaiana's chapters at all. I couldn't connect with her. And after the second book I'm not that invested in Nik either.

Maybe it's me and not the book.

But I will say I loved how Faythe and Reylan's relationship developed throughout this book, the slowburn was toe-curling and they are so wholesome. We even got spice!

The author did say going forward—this series will be more New Adult.

This series made me reminisce a lot about Throne of Glass but it did not win me over even though TOG was multi-POV. I don't know if this is where I stop and say good bye to it even though I really want to know what happens next with Faythe and Reylan.

It could be a "me" problem but we shall see.

Gods, this is like a near carbon-copy of all the ToG books combined into 1 plot. I mean come on woman, have some originality!! It seems to me that all the characters' personalities, histories, and powers have literally been plagiarized from SJM's writings. Not just ToG, but also a bit of ACOTAR. Honestly, I do not recommend this book, unless you want to read a watered down version of SJM's writings.

I am officially DNF’ing this series.

I am all for drawing inspiration from other series, but this was just too similar to Throne of Glass and ACOTAR. I mean down to the character’s attributes. I want to be respectful in my review but this just felt like downright plagiarism. There’s a Manon lookalike, the MMC has “stars in his eyes,” the plot is giving Throne Of Glass and I just can’t do it anymore.

I wanted to stick it out to see how she developed her characters into an adult series but I just don’t care to stick around.

Do we really need to go over what I did and didn’t like? I don’t think so.

I really admire the way this author has managed to make each follow-up in the series even better than its predecessor! This installment felt like how I imagine it would to run a marathon if it were emotional instead of physical; I was filled with ease, joy, nerves, despair and a desire to get to the end that was tempered by the need to savor the journey there. It helps that I truly enjoy spending time with this cast of characters, and that I look forward to seeing how the world and this epic saga continues to unfold as the series goes on. Can’t wait for the next book!

Was this a crossover episode between ACOTAR and TOG? Yes. Was it a good one? No.

What the fuck is Reuben’s deal? I understand that he is controlled by Marvellas but his presence in the book is so dumb and makes absolutely no sense. It could’ve been such an interesting subplot but instead it makes my eye twitch whenever I see his name. Not to mention Faythe’s stupidity in trusting him even though she REMEMBERS not telling him about the Isles. And Reylan & Co (aka The Inner Circle) agreeing to take him on a suicide mission? Ridiculous. Stupid. Pointless.

Three books and I still don’t get the concept of the temple ruins. Just call them Wyrdkeys and call it a day ma’am. On that note, I know Faythe IS stupid but how did she not realise earlier which ruin Zaiana had? It’s not a rocket science since there are only three of them so??

Oh, and now the next book we’ll getting is a Nik and Tauria book? What in the Tower of Dawn is this?

I liked Maverick though. He seems like the only character with at least a resemblance of any personality.

Flying on a Phoenix was funny too.

🎼 I think I’ve seen this film before 🎼

- Faythe tracing Reylan’s tattoos and him telling her the story they represent (the battles, the people he’s lost, the fallen)
- A “Mage Mirror” living in a trailer and travelling across the kingdoms to offer people a glimpse into their future/fears? REALLY?
- THERE WAS ONLY ONE BED AT THE INN
- a mystic and dangerous creature living in the dungeons of the castle and attacking Faythe
- Zaiana being a heartless, soulless monster with cool iron nails who actually cares for a not-so-weak little fae (*coughs* hi Manon and Elide) AND wants to spare Faythe’s life??? Girl
- Kyleer and Izaiah and Livia (I can’t remember if that was actually her name) being almost carbon copies of Cassian, Az and Mor
- Faythe being DEPLATED after using too much of her power
- Faythe attacking Reylan in her sleep when she’s still learning how to harness the power she clearly cannot wield

As the series continues, they just get better and better. The author does a brilliant job of weaving the story in a realistic and imaginative way. I feel like the time given to new and supporting characters was very well done - this book centres around Faythes journey with many twists and turns along the way. We've got some strong new characters who we can immediately understand and sympathise with, even if they are very morally grey. We've got romance (spice!) that unfolds in a true to the story way and balances perfectly between showing the love our characters have for each other without being too much or too little. We've got more much loved genuinely funny banter and some very emotive scenes which really hit the mark. With each book and each layer I feel like everything is really coming together incredibly well and with three books down it is already a series for our author to be proud of. Perfect.

This feels like a throne of glass dupe. Very similar characters and plotline, the similarities are uncanny. It's like a cheaper version of the ToG books. I do enjoy the multiple POVs, but the plot is too weak, and the ending is predictable.

DNF. I have to admit, I didn't finish the last book in this series but I got this one on a freebie so decided to give it a go. Like many others have said, this series is heavily inspired (to put it mildly) by Throne of Glass to the point where it becomes a massive distraction and spoils the story this author was trying to tell. I felt that way with the earlier books, and the author's character art does the exact opposite of shut down this comparison, but I swear some elements were copied and pasted here. I checked out once a character appeared with iron nails. I mean, surely you'd look at that in the edit and realise there was no way unfavourable comparisons wouldn't be made to Throne of Glass. I think this character was using them to conduct lightning or something but even so, in a series that was already skirting perilously close to the plagarism line in my eyes, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I know people don't own concepts and there are only so many YA tropes so books are bound to share similarities but when those similarities pile up so quickly and consistently it becomes impossible to ignore them. The writing style in this series is good and I'd consider trying another series by this author with more originality but as it is this feels like very well written fan fiction.

1.00!

This was one big pile of plagerism. I can't believe I didn't notice it months after reading this book thanks to some people I was able to notice how much the characters were like characters from tog and acotar like in a really bad way. I don't want to hate on an author but she can't just plagerise another authors characters and their personalities and get away with it. Giving reasons on social media like "sjm didn't invent these tropes or if a character has this ability or looks like that doesn't mean it's sjms character" like woman 😭 there's one thing being inspired by an author and one thing copying off her work. You cannot tell me the morally grey characters were not the exact same carbon copy of Manon and Dorian especially the manon part same ironteeth nails the character considers love as a weakness is vicious and cold and hates the FMC at first sight but helps them near the end isn't that what happened with aelin and manon. Reylan that dude looked like rowan but him and his goons resembled the bat boys as Bobbie mentioned its so hard not to read the book and feel like you are reading about them and it's not even nice 🤦🤦🤦 the writing is so bad even eroticas on wattpad have better writing. Nik and tauria were definitely giving Chaol and Yrene and guess what they got their own book! Didn't Yrene and chaol get there own book. It's sickening how this author kept on stealing and defending herself. I'm so glad that other people realised this as well because I was reading other reviews and I saw alot of people mentioning that. When I first read it I felt like it had a resemblance to tog and acotar but that was because it had been a very long time since I read both those book now that I have reread tog twice and ACOTAR once I can see why people felt like this was a rip off and how this author was plagerising. The only thing that felt original were the characters Marlowe and jakon. Don't even get me started on how bad the spice was. When I read it months ago this was my main problem it was so unnecessarily spicy and they were written so bad like super bad, cringe some authors should just not write smut because I remember a line, i can't really interpret it in the most accurate way because I read those books a long time ago but it went like "are you aching for a release because my fingers can provide that" something like that and I don't understand why or how three different guys would say that in a book.

Pathetic!

I.. don't know what to type right now so I'm just gonna list my thoughts down, I'm sorry if it's not in sensible order.
- I love almost all the new characters, except certain few I'm sure you don't too *cough* the lord/master.
- The plot feels more like prologue before the significant raise of intensity, I'm curious what's in store for the next book after ACOTC, where Chloe would bring the story and how.
- We have some new character appearance here with Zaiana, Maverick, and Kyleer can't get anymore faster to become characters I like with each of their own complexity and characters.
- Zaiana is the most interesting character to read from this book, I just love her right away, wish we could see her and Faythe as ally.
- REYLAN FREAKING ARROWOOD and his words, dayum I need a fan.
- Also Zaiana and Maverick, lightning and fire, they sure did BURN when together, also need a fan.
- I love the interaction between Faythe and his father.
- We get to know a little more about Rhynelle history and Reylan past.
- Sometimes Faythe irked me with how much hero complex she has, how easy for her to sacrifice herself for others and also her naivety. Which given her background and her character it's not surprising at all and expected from her but it still irks me sometimes..
- Feels Rueben gonna hold important role and may have important twist in a future.
Bottom line is I LOVE THIS BOOK and can't wait to read the rest of the series when it comes out.

Oh this is a side note but I really like how we have healthy platonic relationship between male & female here, like Faythe with Jakon or Nik. Sure there's time where it feels like they're gonna be more than friends but they don't, they know they're not the right romantic partner with each other and can still keep being a great best friend of each other. I hope I can write it down right and not offending anyone because I have no intention to, I'm more than happy when we have queer character esp holding important role or as the main support but sometimes author make the opposite gender friends of the main character as queer as a brief explanation why they don't have romantic feeling towards each other or insurance that they won't be more than platonic. Not because they just love each other platonically and doesn't have romantic feeling or development towards each other.

I need to think about review here.
What I know is that first 2 books I read were amazing - plot, characters, names, powers and so on. That was before I knew who SJM is. And while waiting for this ATFTA book, I got my hands on ACOTAR, CC and TOG series. And now my struggle surfaces..
Maybe such strong similarities between TOG / ACOTAR series and An Heir Comes to Rise series doesn't bother other readers, but after reading SJM works and realizing, that Chloe wrote these series inspired by SJM work, I can't switch off my brain and not see copy-paste style here. And I'm really sad about it.
Later, in my real review I will note some (out of many) similarities between SJM work and Chloe's work and leave it for you to think about it.

I mean it's ok to be inspired and have some similarities, but to have majority of character / places / trinkets names and plot almost identical, that's just ..no. I guessed many things here because I know now what happened in ACOTAR and TOG series..

Another 5 star rating for this series! Firstly, thank you to Chloe for the ARC of this book. This book takes the step up to new adult and there is a bit of spice as the books goes on.

This book delves deeper in the the lore in this world and the characters feelings and motives. This lends its self to further the plot and character development. Faythe continues to be my favourite character and watching her battle with her own nightmares and feelings is engaging.

Zianna and Maverick were a welcomed difference to the protagonists of this story and show a varied view on sides in a battle/quest.

I love Nik (my second favourite character) I cannot wait to see him grow as his new role in his kingdom and see where his story goes with Tauria.

Chloe knows how to play on the heart strings and make you want to carry on reading to find out what will happen next.

Holy cow! I loved this one so much. Talk about a major book hangover. I enjoyed reading all the different POV. Watching Fayhthe grow as a character is so great to see. I loved watching her grow in the relationships she has and the news that were made. Reylan is just beautiful. I loved meeting all the new characters. I loved the jump from YA to NA. It really felt natural. The ending was just so beautifully done. I can't wait to see what comes next.

A Throne From the Ashes is book 3 in the An Heir Comes to Rise series. While the series starts off in YA this book is NA. I really can't recommend this series enough.

Incroyable ! Génialissime ! Oufissime !

4 ⭐️ 0.5 🌶️

I listened to the audiobook of this and loved the narration.
So much happens in this book!! It is a chunky one but I feel we now have so many more of the chess pieces revealed of this plot. Because that is what this series is, an intricate game of chess.
The character development in this one I loved and the different relationships we’ve built so far get cemented and tested.
I’m really enjoying the multi POVs and can’t wait for the next one.

3.5☆ ok I’m enjoying the storyline and how each book adds more characters and depth but the execution wasn’t exactly there. there was a lot going on yet nothing at all in this book. I personally think it could’ve been shorter because I wasn’t invested from beginning to end.

That was so good omg. I couldn’t stop reading at the end! So many twists! I did predict some of it, but only because it was very similar to TOG lol. Obsessedddd with Reylan and Faythe.

My reread continues! I actually finished this one a couple of weeks ago, but I haven’t had time to write up a review yet. I love this series, and I’m getting closer to seeing how it all ends. 🐦‍🔥

We get more lore and world building in Book 3, and the plot is moving right along. Even knowing already what happens and how this book ends, I still found myself a little bit surprised by a couple of things I had forgotten about between now and my first read of this book.

Faythe and Reylan’s relationship is one of my favorites, and the slow burn is delicious. We finally get some spice between them in this book, and I can’t get enough of them!

I loved all the new characters we got in this book - from all the new fae we meet in Rhyenelle to the introduction of the dark fae. 🖤

The new adventure and quest in this book keeps you on your toes. And I remember the ending tearing at all my heartstrings the first time around. Honestly, it still did on this second read through as well!

I finished up my reread of A Clash of Three Courts this week too, so I’ll have my review for that up as well either today or tomorrow. I’m excited to for my last reread of the series before moving into new territory! ✨
