Read by a Tim Curry. Doctor Watson solves a case before Sherlock Holmes. Original published in The new Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Various Authors.
Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.
Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.
He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.
Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.
In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.
Stephen King tries Sherlock Holmes and adds an occult twist. Victorian England sees unsolved murder case that even the great detective Sherlock Holmes initially finds puzzling by Dr. Watson... Yeah, the big fun of mysteries are logically figuring it out as the story progresses. Horror is unnerving realizations. (Notice you can combine the above) But adding the occult (we're not explaining anything, it's not logical "BOO"...) That doesn't belong here. It is annoying.
Although this book may not have been the most imaginative or in-depth story line, it definitely is worth the four star ratting. This is because, after all the books I have read by Stephen King he can still surprise you.
Here we have another story set in England. NOT A HORROR STORY, but, a sleuthing story. A Holmes and Watson story no less. This is a story set out by Watson in old age looking back at his life, and, most importantly for Watson, this is a story about a case he solved himself 😊.
This is an excellent detective story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson where Dr. Watson is shocked to discover the solution to the mystery first. Watson tells the company how the crime was committed before Holmes was able to see the illusion that hides what no-one was aware of. Watson explains that a father, who changed his will to keep his fortune from his children was murdered by his children. Holmes, realizes what was discovered by Watson just as Watson begins to describe the crime to the authorities.
I think this the best short story I've ever read, as it's written by my favourite author Stephen King about my favourite character Sherlock Holmes, After I have finished it I wished if Mr.King had written more stories about my dear Holmes.
Terrific Sherlock Holmes story written in Stephen King's style, but with Watson being the smart one solving the case, and a crime not dissimilar in its plotting or case closing to "Murder at the Orient Express" by Agatha Christie.
Cogent work full of beautiful quotes and gems of wisdom. Dark, sleek and suave as Mr. King's best.
This short story is included in the “Nightmares and Dreamscapes” which I will be reviewing pretty soon.
To be fully honest here, short stories written by Stephen King always miss the mark with me. I always end up not liking his short stories and I don’t know why it is so.
And this short story isn’t any different from Stephen King’s other short stories ive read in the past.
The characters in this short story in my opinion were very boring and uninteresting.
The plot in this one is meh as well because it was very slow, boring and uninteresting. And to be honest writing I’m writing this review the next day after reading this short story and I cant recall what the short story was about because I just didn’t bother remembering this short story because I didn’t like it so much.
The writing style here in my opinion didn’t feel like something written by the one and only master of horror. But rather by someone who have never written any books or short stories before
The Doctor's Case is an interesting addition to Nightmares & Dreamscapes, in which Stephen King takes on Sherlock Holmes. This is not just King's take on Sherlock Holmes, but an actual Sherlock Holmes story for a book in which many famous authors added their own Sherlock stories. The case is not extremely complicated and solved instantly, but the twist here is that Watson solves the case rather than Holmes. I always enjoy a well told mystery, and King does successfully capture the feeling of a Holmes story.
