Robin Cook is back — with a shocking story of medical conspiracy. Today, organ transplants are common miracles of science. But if the supply cannot meet the demand, how far will people go to find donors? Dr. Laurie Montgomery, a forensic pathologist, learns the terrifying answer when she investigates a series of fatal "overdose" of young professionals. Some crimes are beyond comprehension. But seeing is believing...
Librarian Note: Not to be confused with British novelist Robin Cook a pseudonym of Robert William Arthur Cook.
Dr. Robin Cook (born May 4, 1940 in New York City, New York) is an American doctor / novelist who writes about medicine, biotechnology, and topics affecting public health.
He is best known for being the author who created the medical-thriller genre by combining medical writing with the thriller genre of writing. His books have been bestsellers on the "New York Times" Bestseller List with several at #1. A number of his books have also been featured in Reader's Digest. Many were also featured in the Literary Guild. Many have been made into motion pictures.
Cook is a graduate of Wesleyan University and Columbia University School of Medicine. He finished his postgraduate medical training at Harvard that included general surgery and ophthalmology. He divides his time between homes in Florida, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts where he lives with his wife Jean. He is currently on leave from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He has successfully combined medical fact with fiction to produce a succession of bestselling books. Cook's medical thrillers are designed, in part, to make the public aware of both the technological possibilities of modern medicine and the ensuing ethical conundrums.
Cook got a taste of the larger world when the Cousteau Society recruited him to run its blood - gas lab in the South of France while he was in medical school. Intrigued by diving, he later called on a connection he made through Jacques Cousteau to become an aquanaut with the US Navy Sealab when he was drafted in the 60's. During his navy career he served on a nuclear submarine for a seventy-five day stay underwater where he wrote his first book! [1]
Cook was a private member of the Woodrow Wilson Center's Board of Trustees, appointed to a six-year term by the President George W. Bush.[2]
[edit] Doctor / Novelist Dr. Cook's profession as a doctor has provided him with ideas and background for many of his novels. In each of his novels, he strives to write about the issues at the forefront of current medical practice. To date, he has explored issues such as organ donation, genetic engineering, fertility treatment, medical research funding, managed care, medical malpractice, drug research, drug pricing, specialty hospitals, stem cells, and organ transplantation.[3]
Dr. Cook has been remarked to have an uncanny ability to anticipate national controversy. In an interview with Dr.Cook, Stephen McDonald talked to him about his novel Shock; Cook admits the timing of Shock was fortuitous. "I suppose that you could say that it's the most like Coma in that it deals with an issue that everybody seems to be concerned about," he says, "I wrote this book to address the stem cell issue, which the public really doesn't know much about. Besides entertaining readers, my main goal is to get people interested in some of these issues, because it's the public that ultimately really should decide which way we ought to go in something as that has enormous potential for treating disease and disability but touches up against the ethically problematic abortion issue."[4]
Keeping his lab coat handy helps him turn our fear of doctors into bestsellers. "I joke that if my books stop selling, I can always fall back on brain surgery," he says. "But I am still very interested in being a doctor. If I had to do it over again, I would still study medicine. I think of myself more as a doctor who writes, rather than a writer who happens to be a doctor." After 35 books,he has come up with a diagnosis to explain why his medical thrillers remain so popular. "The main reason is, we all realize we are at risk. We're all going to be patients sometime," he says. "You can write about great white sharks or haunted houses, and you can say I'm not going into the ocean or I'm not going in haunted houses, but you can't say you're n
This book is the first medical thriller series of Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery. However, Dr. Jack Stapleton is never mentioned in this book yet so this book centers around the young forensic pathologist, Dr. Laurie Montgomery who works in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, New York. In this book, she begins to take notice of an unusual number of deaths of young professionals who seemed to be succumbing to an overdose of cocaine. But they are not known drug users. Because of the similarities in their deaths, Dr. Montgomery begins to suspect that something is amiss and begins to investigate the mystery.
She strikes up a friendship with Detective Lieutenant Lou Saldano with the Homicide Bureau of NYPD. He does not initially share her concerns over these drug induced deaths because he was more focused on a number of mob related killings. Despite their different opinions on the deaths of these young professionals, Lou has the hots for Laurie, but timing is everything. I found myself liking Dr. Montgomery and Lou very much!
The flow of events in this book is so smooth. The author weaves a fine plot that will keep the reader eagerly turning the pages of this book, even though the discerning reader will probably solve the mystery before Laurie and Lou do so. I found the story interesting and if you want a good quick read this book should do very well.
I bought this book new when it was on clearance and it has been sitting on my bookshelf for 18 years or so. I don't know why I put it off so long; I think I forgot how much I like Robin Cook's books. So, I finally decided to try and get some of the older books off the bookshelf, and started with this one. This book was fantastic! It combined a pathologist, opthamologist, police detective, and some organized crime thugs into a very interesting and page turning story.
I entered the military only a few years after this book was published and I can remember countless hours in classes on sexual harassment and discrimination. This book shed a little light onto why it was such a hot topic at the time. The main character, Laurie Montgomery, was an attractive young woman and would often get chastised or harassed for being a forensic pathologist for the office of the Medical Examiner. Men would treat her more like a model, than give her credit for being a medical doctor. I just found it interesting to get an idea of how things were just before I entered into the professional world.
I love to read gripping medical thrillers and just came across this series last month with book #12 Genesis. The characters and plot were so well written that I had to find the first in the series and start catching up.
I am surprised to say the least that Jack Stapleton isn't part of this novel yet just Dr. Laurie Montgomery, a forensic pathologist working for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in NYC. I'm giving this a lower rating because I personally don't like stories involving crime families.
I read this book to fulfill the medical condition category of a reading challenge and wish that I had not wasted my time. One of the most frustrating things about this book for me was that it was recommended to me by a librarian. I visited the public library in my new home town for the first time and decided to ask for a recommendation. I was a little skeptical when I picked up the book, but I thought that I should be open minded. Turns out that it is possible to be so open minded that your brains fall out.
The review that I posted above sums up some of the issues that I had with the book. The characters were weak! Also, I found the book filled with some racist undertones. As I was reading the book, I started making a list of each racist or stereotypical comment I encountered. Since so much time has passed and I misplaced the paper, I am going to go from memory. In an effort to be descriptive, the author let’s us know the ethnic backgrounds of several side characters. I found that annoying not only because the description usually also contained something negative, but I found myself wondering about the ethnic background of all the other characters. Are we to assume that if the author does not describe the characters that they are white?
One of the main characters of the novel is Dr. Laurie Montgomery. From the author’s description, she is an attractive woman who is the recipient of sexist comments and is having trouble dating. I did appreciate the attempt at having a strong, female lead. However, I got annoyed with all the descriptions of her beauty and her strange dating antics. I just felt like it did not move the plot forward. Instead, I found her dialogue whiny and her approach to matters of the heart trite.
Finally, the worst part about this book is that I figured out the mystery with at least a third of the book remaining. The ending tied together a little bit too neatly. I did not care much about any of the characters and I felt angry with the lack of character development. I would not recommend this book to a friend.
I had previously read Vector in this series, which I picked up because I have a weakness for infectious disease outbreaks in fiction. I liked the characters so much I thought I'd go back and try the rest of this series.
This is the first book, though Jaqck Stapleton does not appear in this one, and is the first one to showcase Dr Laurie Montgomery. It isn't as good as Vector, but I did like the story of corruption in the organ donation field. I really enjoyed the detective aspect to it.
After reading “Pandemic” by Robin Cook and thinking there really wasn’t anything special about it I decided to give this series another chance and start at the beginning but again I just wasn’t impressed. I didn’t hate this book but I didn’t love it either. I find the idea of a medical thriller fascinating but maybe Robin Cook just isn’t for me.
I gave this three stars but I would probably rate this more along 2.5 stars.
It started off good, but the plot became a bit repetitive and two of the “bad guy” characters were buffoons.I guessed the silly ending about half-way through the book. Disappointing.
It taste good for all mystery lovers . Mr robin must have idea about all the drugs and its effect ,you can conclude that from his imaginary lead star actress ,Mrs Laurie Montgomery, who was playing role of medical examiner ,spy and responsible citizen by putting her professional job in danger to accomplish her noble cause to aware citizen of Manhattan about murder series due to overdoze of drug called cocaine. She did her best ,even worked on sunday even after being fired ,to resolve the mysteries death series which was published lately with containing truth about deaths due to drug. Her main goal was to prevent more deaths due to heavily absorbed cocaine ,she actually had seen her brother's death in front of her own binoculars due to same overdose. In between Dr jorden, the ophthalmologist, and Mr spy lou also helping him to take her away for dinner in order to win her heart ,healthy competition was there between them .Superior of laurie ,the organized crime unit due to political pressure all were tried to keep as secret and showed all the deaths as natural but at last laurie was successful in her life saving journey .How ???and why ????,who won her atlast ???for that u suggest you to get addicted to this mystery drugs' nightmare thriller...nice one...Rich people are not always lucky .....
The book started off well but turned out to be quite predictable in the end and moreover the quarrels between the lead characters were so repetitive and juvenile that it became irritating towards the end!
Overall, a good read. It is pretty graphic, so stay away if you don't like to read about blood and guts. I liked the Lou character, but Tony seemed far-fetched, given that he was only 18. He seemed way more mature and experienced; it didn't add up.
I did enjoy this book! The only thing that got to me was Lou’s childish attitude towards Laurie. He got way too defensive and moody, and kept blaming Laurie’s disinterest on his economic status instead of just recognizing his own bad attitude was to blame. I don’t know what happens to him in future books, but I’m glad to know she at least doesn’t end up marrying him. Since this was written so long ago, it’s hard to tell if Lou’s character was meant to be perceived as childish, or if it was supposed to blend in with the popular (at one point) idea that men needed to be angry and jealous instead of communicative and honest.
There were a couple parts with weird inconsistencies, such as when two characters were in someone’s backyard, but then suddenly in their house? Or when Laurie was at home, but suddenly not at home. And the Kindle version puts no spaces between sections within chapters to indicate a scene change, which made for a few confused moments on my part.
Even though the genres include sci-fi and horror, there isn’t a trace (unless you count the detailed autopsies, and some mobster/mafia violence), there is no Jack or Stapleton or Jack Stapleton, even though he is in the name of the series, he has yet to emerge or even be mentioned, maybe in book 2? It’s still a good book, but I feel a bit mislead. Where are my zombies or soul transfers (that’s where my mind went to with the eyes donated, the ophthalmologist, and the guy who needed corneal transplants).
It’s not at all my genre, so I wouldn’t have chosen or read knowing this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it anyways, so much that I’m going to read the next book. I’m extremely curious about this Jack person and if maybe, just maybe, there’s some sci-fi. I won’t hold my breath, I’ll just enjoy it for what it is.
Eh, you know, it's ok. It's like lots of Robin Cook's books - half medical text book and half scripted tv drama. I really believe his writing improved over time, but this being one of his earlier books, my reading was constantly interrupted by myself saying, "Nobody would do that," or "Nobody would react that way," or "Has he ever met a woman before?"
Funny story: I bought my copy of this book at Half Price Books (I think). I did not notice that the former owner had written inside the front cover "Ok, but Dumb ending". Comparing the writing to Robin Cook's signature on the front cover I would swear that the inscription was written by Robin Cook. He knows.
Robin Cook is a new name for me in the thriller genre. Reading the synopsis and learning that it was medical thriller had me hooked. I really loved how much detail Robin put in his books. For example the autopsies done, you get to know every little detail from making the Y-insection to the fluid in the intestines. And it is so vivid! That is why I gave it three stars. The story itself isn't particularly bad but I found it too much. Too much story lines, from od's to competing gangs. Besides that, I got a bit annoyed by the main character, I find her a bit whiny; her pushing limits by her boss and going outside the book by doing stuff that isn't her responsibility in the research. Lastly I found the romance, or better said, the attempt for romance in this book very much not needed.
although the mystery element can be easily figured out while there are a good number of pages left this novel offers an entertaining and thrilling viewpoint into the world of medical examination an i felt that the connections made between the mafia and doctors could have been better. The lead character was well potrayed along with an imaculate description of the surroundings in an urban setting of the city that never sleeps. Also worth mentioning were the intensity of the moments in which some kills were performed by angelo and tony, kudos to the author for making them so involving.
Occasionally I can enjoy a medical mystery. In this case, it helped to pass the time on a road trip without demanding my undivided attention. But I have to say that the plot is extremely far-fetched. It's not just the convoluted conspiracy by gangland figures, but also the very questionable decisions and unprofessional behavior of both the assistant medical examiner, Laurie Montgomery, and the opthalmologist/surgeon who pursues her romantically.
I read this book because I needed to read a thriller. I thought I might like Robin Cook because I like medical stuff and forensics, but the writing in this book was terrible and I figured out the entire plot about forty pages into the book. Maybe some of Cook's writing is better, but this is certainly not one of his best.
Malta leitura terminada, adorei tudo acerca do livro. Leiam. Mesmo.
