You need to have some rain to see the rainbow...

And there's lots of rain and hail in Scout's life. But she keeps moving forward. Before her dad died, Scout had a good family life but then it all fell to pieces. Her reality has been getting worse, but she just wants to make it to 18. She is going to survive, and she's willing to fight for that survival. When she ends up in a new place, one that isn't much better than the old, she discovers that she doesn't have to do it on her own. She finds a family again.

The addiction in this story is treated REAL. It's not sugar coated. I was pleased that those that really needed it, got therapy and support.

There are characters to love here...and to hate! Tears and laughter; music and rainbows. This is a page turner, for sure. I highly recommend it.

4.5 heartbreaking, hopeful stars

“You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.”
--Maya Angelou

I loved this book! An emotional YA romance that is dramatic, heartfelt and intense, and beautifully written. I was instantly sucked in and couldn’t put it down, and I loved this gorgeous story.

Scout Ramsay is a 17 year old girl living a heartbreaking life. After the death of her father, her mother lost herself to drugs, and Scout has been subjected to hellish, neglectful and terrifying circumstances ever since. After her mother is busted, Scout is sent to live with the only family she has nearby – an uncle she doesn’t know who lives in the small town of Cedar Springs. Halfway through her senior year, her only goal is to get through the next six months so she can graduate, and by then she’ll be 18 and will finally be responsible for her own life.

Wyatt Cooper grew up in Cedar Springs and is from an idealistic family. Though the countdown to graduation is on, he has no idea what he wants to do with his life and in the meantime he is wishing his high school days away in the boredom that is his senior year. And then along comes the intriguing new girl.

High school is buzzing with nasty rumours about Scout’s life, but despite that she is immediately befriended by Wyatt’s twin sister, Zoie, and Wyatt himself is quickly captivated by her. The two of them develop a friendship, and as they begin to open up to each other, their relationship easily and naturally becomes so much more.

“I’m a freak.”
“No, you’re not. You’ve been dealt a shit hand in life so far, but you’re not a freak.” … “You’re awesome. And it kills me that you don’t know that.”
Tears trickle down my cheeks. His words are sweet, but I can’t believe them. Because I know they’re not true.
“I have a junkie mother and an uncle who can’t stand me.”
Wyatt gently places his finger on my chin and lifts my face to his.
“Screw them. You have me.”

The romance is absolutely beautiful. Logan does a fantastic job capturing the magic and wonder of first love, and I loved the emotion and intensity that she put into Scout and Wyatt’s love story. It’s sweet and all-consuming, and I loved the way they were so open about everything and blindly followed their hearts as they embraced all that was happening between them.

“I just want you to do everything you want. I want you to have everything you’ve ever wanted. Because you’re everything I want. You will always be everything I want.”

Oh Wyatt... my latest cougar obsession. This is the type of boy that you want as your first boyfriend - or that you want your teenage daughter to have. So sweet, loving and supportive. he's just a gem!

But as Scout and Wyatt fall for each other, they are both dealing with so much in their lives. This book deals with some very serious subject matter – drug use, addiction, physical abuse and the many dynamics of family – and it’s all handled sensitively, realistically and with a lot of heart (and as a bonus, it's safe for young readers). I could feel what the characters go through and I marvelled at their strength they showed.

It’s a wonderfully dramatic (but mercifully angst-free) story that is effortlessly woven into the romance to create a story with depth and heart, and it’s an amazing journey for two characters that I could not help but absolutely love.

And shout out, too, to the secondary characters. The support that Scout and Wyatt receive from the people in their lives is fantastic, each of them bringing so much to the story, and the relationships that developed were a real highlight of the book.

This is my first book by Sydney Logan, and I loved it. Her writing flows beautifully and she knows how to brings the feels without going over the top, to create a realistic story that absolutely stole my heart.

I loved it! 4.5 stars.

Yes, this was a fluffy teen romance, but it dealt with so much more. It was actually a very deep novel, delving into addiction and abuse and everything that comes with that. I have no idea how Scout managed to come out so sweet and wise. The last decision she makes about her mother made me cry, because as Scout says, sometimes love just isn't enough. There were some very good messages in this book.

Between the raindrops is not a book for everyone. It contains triggers such as drug use, human trafficking (though it doesn't dive too deep and no one is harmed), physical abuse and some mental. I felt so sorry for the characters and I cried for Scout. She goes through a lot of bad situations and she doesn't deserve any of it. I wanted to get into the book and promise her that everything was going to be ok. She matures a lot in this book and I loved how she stood up to the people who harmed her. I applaud what she did in the end. It was the best decision she could have made, but I kind of wished for a happier ending. The ending we got felt more realistic though.

Wyatt goes through some issues on his own. His overprotectiveness could have been represented as an act of love in many romance novels and we would have been fine with it, but in this book, we see a more realistic side of the problem and he goes to therapy. He felt so responsible for not protecting Scout when she needed him, even though it wasn't his fault that it sent him over the edge. Over the course of the book, he is a great person and I fell for him. He is always there for Scout and I adored him for that. Gina, his mom, was also one of the best people in this book. She bonded with Scout and she gave her what she lost because of the drugs, a mother. Their bond gave me so many feels!

The reason why I needed an epilogue was that I needed to see that she and Wyatt are ok a few years after the events of the book. I really hope the author will grace us with a short story about them in the future. I also want to know what happened to Zoie and her boyfriend. Those plotlines are bugging me a lot.

The book is a must read and you should go on this journey with Wyatt and Scout. Besides a recommendation, I am also giving it a nomination for my top books of 2018 and I don't see it not making it to the top 5.

This has a lot of heartfelt emotions pouring through the pages of this book. Although there is a romance at the center of it all, the majority of the book is about dealing with, and surviving life and all the things it can throw at you. There are a few chuckles throughout, but it is more of a heavy, somber read. The young girl in question has dealt with more than any one person should, yet instead of getting angry and lashing out on the world, she puts her energy into her schoolwork and writing in her journals. She's kept a sensible and smart head on her shoulders through it all. Often made easier with the help of her new friends. There's a great cast of characters (well, and some unsavory ones thrown in.) They each compliment one another and work well with the story-line. There is some serious subject matters displayed in the book. Primarily drugs and abuse, but it is clean with it's sexual content (or lack of.) It's a good YA novel, that even the older crowd can enjoy. It's wonderfully written and you find yourself captivated by this girls life and while you are waiting for her to reach her breaking point, you'll pray she finds the strength she needs. And are thankful she finds the boy who helps her. (And she him in return.) It's easy to read. Alternates between POVs.

Such a great story...

This is a great story especially for me because it's given me a pint of view in what my daughter has gone through since I'm a recovering addict. My backstory is similar to this story. Dr prescribed pain meds and it goes from there. No excuses but it's hard and to hear a point of view from the child's perspective was just what I needed. The author made it so realistic and told it is such a way that it made it seem like it was my own life and I love that...

Thanks so much for this story it honestly means a lot to me...

An amazing story, filled with so much emotion.
~~~~~~Sydney Logan gives us this story through the eyes of 17 year old Scout, a smart and beautiful girl, whose life is anything but easy. Her life is about surviving with an addicted mother and an abusive uncle.
We also see though the eyes of 17 year old Wyatt, a smart and handsome boy who has many advantages that Scout has not had and begins to realize that his life isn't as bad as he thought.
~~~~The story deals with substance addiction. It is handled with realism and hope.
Get this book and meet Scout , her friends Wyatt, Zoie, and their parents and Scout's therapist .
I recommend this excellent 5 star story to all.

This was a terrific account of an older teen dealing with the repercussions of living with a drug-abusing parent. It's only a sample of the devastation of drug addiction, but smart and realistically written. Yes, Between the Raindrops is a YA romance. Yet, at its heart, it is more about the transformative healing of a girl who is working through tragic circumstances and the strength she gains from the support of those who care for her. Those being the legal system which consists of law enforcement, a therapist, and a social worker, as well as her new friends and "family." Overall, it's a quick read that fits a lot of realistic drama in its pages along with a sweet and satisfying ending. (This is my voluntary and unbiased review of an advanced copy of Between the Raindrops.)

Wow! Just wow! What a truly emotional journey for this young lady. 17 years old and she is ripped from her home and put in another until she turns 18. While this move brings both sorrow and joy for her, she finds an amazing best friend who gives her a family as well. The Campbell family opens their hearts and their homes to her to show her that there are people she can trust and that she can love someone. Wyatt is so amazing in how he has this instant connection to Scout. He becomes her protector, friend and boyfriend. This book was truly some insight to the realities of what some young children and families face. Her strength, her courage and her hope bring her through to start a new chapter in her life with an amazing young man by her side.

This was an emotional journey for 17 year old Scout. She is a smart young lady with a mom for a junkie and her father dead. Her mom gets arrested and she has to go live with her Uncle.
She loves writing in her journal of what she wants out of life.
Wyatt notices Scout from her first day. He befriends her and watches out for her. With Zoe and Wyatt by her side anything is possible.

I enjoyed reading this story it deals with abuse and drugs and what can happen. There is a lot of hope in this story. Scout is easy to relate to and you want her to succeed.

In the book "Beneath the Raindrops" the author, Sydney Logan, takes us through an absolutely heartbreaking jouney with an abused teenager named Scout. This book has some triggers and while it may not be for everyone it is an amazing, tender journey. The author handles the issues this book brings up with a delicate hand.

The opening scenes of the book show Scout in her house trying to stay warm. Her drug addicted mother has yet again failed to pay the electric bill that would have kept her warm on the cold winter night. Hearing a commotion downstairs, she goes to investigate only to see her mother being arrested.

She was being arrested for trying to trade Scout for a bag of crystal meth.

With no one to turn to, Scout is sent to live with her Uncle, a physician in a small town. The smart girl is put in a good school, lives in a huge home, and meets a handsome boy who seems to intrigue her. All should be wonderful, right?

Wrong.

Struggling with the demons her childhood has saddled her with and the dark secrets being shoved onto her, Scout goes on a soul crushing journey. She has to face down her fears, her incarcerated mother, and the people in her life who just want to use her and abuse her. Will she make it to her eighteenth birthday alive or will she fold under the pressure and let the horrors of her life suck her under?

By far one of the absolute top ten books that I have read in the past five years. It was an emotional rollercoaster that I wanted to start again as soon as I finished it. This book gets down to the nitty gritty and offers a peek into the lives of abused children everywhere. It was a fantastic book and I absolutely recommend it. I'd give it ten out of five stars if I could.

This is Sydney Logan’s tenth novel, and I’ve read enough of her books over the years to know that her story will be a good one. Sydney is a master of sweet romance, an author that can captivate this middle-aged wife and mom with a love story set in high school between two teens. Sydney’s talent at immersing the reader right back into the highs and lows of adolescence is effortless.

Between the Raindrops is the story of seventeen-year-old Scout Ramsey. Scout should be enjoying her high school years, but she knows little of normal family life. Her father has passed away, and her mother has been arrested, leaving Scout little choice but to move in with an estranged relative and start over at a new school. When she shows up to history class and sits in the chair normally occupied by Wyatt Campbell, Scout meets the boy destined to change the course of her life.

This novel perfectly balances the light hearted giddiness of first love along with the dark subject of addiction and its ripple effects on family and community. Between the Raindrops doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of life, but this isn’t an angsty novel that leaves you feeling like all is lost. Rather, this book has that special ability to fill you with hope and longing for the HEA that Wyatt and Scout deserve.

Over time, Sydney Logan has become one my automatic one-click authors, building up high expectations in me. Between the Raindrops did not disappoint in any way. I happily recommend this book to adults and teens alike, confident that both will connect with its characters and their story.

** Spoiler free review**
WOW!!!! Let me first say this book really left me raw. It hit home for me as well. Imagine being a girl at 17, your beautiful, BUT you have a really huge problem called Mom...What is that problem? I cant say. BUT lets say Scout Ramsey had it rough. So rough that she watches her mother being arrested in her own home. But things go from bad to worse. Scout has options not great ones. She moves to the town of Ceder Springs to live with her Dr uncle. My only spoiler alert is that the Uncle is a horrible man.
Scout meets Wyatt and Zoie Campbell, twins. They come from the perfect family ( in scouts eyes at least) Their Mom is a nurse and their Dad is the football coach in ther high school.
Now here's the rough part of the story. Scout has no idea how bad of a man her Uncle is, in my opinion he the lowest form of human there is. But the hard part is he's well respected Doctor at the same hospital that Wyatt's Mom works at.
I admired Scout, for a 17 year old she is truly mature and handled things that were thrown at her, but the thing she realized that really impressed me the most is that she finally realized that her mother's problem wasn't her fault. She is a very brave young woman

Between The Raindrops is an emotional journey for a strong, fierce young 17 year old girl named Scout. I mean how does a young lady accept her mother trying to sell her for drugs? When her mother is sent to jail, Scout is sent to live with her uncle. And lets just say her situation doesn't really get much better under his care. But Scout is determined to hold out until she's 18.

My heart broke for Scout. She deserved a much better life, but watching her accept that she was going to get through all this was beautiful. When she moves in with her uncle, she meets 2 friends at school, twins Wyatt and Zoie. But the entire family open their hearts and home to Scout, showing her the love of a real family that she's not had in years.

Wyatt is instantly connected to Scout. These two have a beautiful connection that I LOVED. Although he does kinda border on obsessive behavior towards her, he just wanted her safe.

Between the Raindrops is a story about not giving up, even when all hope seems lost, and about moving on. I'm not a huge YA fan, but this book is a PHENOMENAL YA book. I highly recommend it.

Between the Raindrops was a great read. It was an emotional read with it's ups and down. Scout has had it tough. Her father passed away and her mom is a drug addict. I thought when her mom gets arrest and she goes to live with her uncle (who's a Dr.) everything was going to start to be great for her but it's not. Scout does meet two amazing twins, Wyatt and Zoie. Zoie and Scout hit it off right away and Scout could really use a friend so that was perfect. Wyatt on other hand for a brief moment comes off jerky but that's totally not how he is. While Zoie and Scout become friends, Scout and Wyatt become more than friends. With her relationships with peers her age goign good she's still not save from her home life. Scout is a really strong likable character. I was really rooting for her to get her happiness.

Between the Raindrops by Sydney Logan was a wonderful story that stayed with me long after I finished reading. I was captivated from the first page by the true-to-life characters and the well-constructed plot. It was beautifully written and easily engaged my emotions. The story covered some very serious topics, including addiction, depression, childhood neglect, and domestic abuse. While it was certainly angsty in places, I didn't find it too much to handle, as Ms. Logan writes with a deft and gentle touch. The romance was sweet and believable, and the ending, while hope-filled, avoided an unrealistic resolution. Life isn't a fairytale, though the young couple in this story were so well written and likable, I was left hoping they received their Happily Ever After.

What an amazing story, I don't think I've ever cried that hard while reading in a long time. Scout is 17, and she has had it rough. From her dad dying and her mom being a drug addict and all that follows both of those. She is a very strong amazing young woman. Wyatt takes his family for granted and thinks they aren't proud of him. These two together are amazing, the way they help each other, calm each other, and he just gives her someone she can finally trust and rely on.

Between the Raindrops is a beautifully captivating love story/coming of age take. Turning away from the typical YA structure, Sydney Logan manages to create a strong as hell female character with an amazing cast of characters.

Are there moments in this novel that are tough? Yes.

Are there moments in this that will make you swoon? Um, yes... Wyatt is quite literally swoonworthy at times. But it's more than that.

Truly, take the journey. Sydney does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the depth of character rarely seen within this genre anymore. ~#MinxM

Scout has been dealt a horrible hand. Between her dad and her mother, neither around to help her through high school. Scout is sent to live with an uncle that takes her only because she is his brother's daughter. Scout's life there is only made better by a friend, her friend's brother Wyatt, and their parents. If not for their support, she probably would not have made it. Ms. Logan does an awesome job of writing about a possible real-life situation. She gives Scout strength and courage to do the right thing and shows that when you really want something and try, anything is possible.

Loved it. I don't think anyone could have told this story in the way Sydney Logan did. It is full of pain and heartbreak but most of all hope. Being someone who has family who has suffered from addiction but has successfully overcome it, this story really hit me and tugged at my heartstrings. Eve if you don't have any experience with addiction, you'll have a hard time keeping dry eyes through this one and an even harder time not believing in hope at the end of it.

4/4.5 stars

This is a beautiful young adult story that touches on so many tough subjects that teens and young adults face such abuse, drug use, sex and abstinence, etc. Scout is a young girl who has had lots of loss and hardships in her life. After losing her dad and her mom going to jail, ending up with her uncle can't be too bad, plus, being so close to being 18, the last thing she wants to do is rock boat even more and end up in a group home.

The only thing Wyatt wants to do is stay under the radar, keep getting good grades and listen to his music. He is a young man with everything...great parents, a nice home, nice car, college education if he wants it. Too bad he is completely oblivious to what a great life he has and how badly he takes everything for granted.

When they meet, it's not only the connection they have with each other, it's what each has to give. Wyatt opens his eyes to beauty of his life. Scout finds the safe haven she hasn't had since she was little girl.

This is the type of book you want every teenager to read. There is a little something that will touch any young person. Sydney Logan did such a great job creating two very different characters and bringing them together in such a way that life lessons can be learned. I really look forward to reading more! Could not put this down at all!

It definitely tugged the heart strings. Even though it’s a young adult romance it shows the struggles Scout went through and how she over came her continued adversities not only by being a strong young woman but by also building strong foundations in the relationships she’s built through Wyatt and the Campbell family.

Really happy I read this and I applaud you Sydney on writing such an amazing book.

*ARC received from author in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts are entirely my own and in no way biased.*

Trigger Warning : Drug abuse, physical abuse, threatening of sexual abuse, mentions of human trafficking.

Between the Raindrops follows the story of 17 year old Scout and her struggles after her junkie mom is jailed and she starts living with her abusive uncle. Everything in her life is in the dumps – her mom, her new home, her uncle, she’s forced to go to therapy and the people at her new school are quick to spread rumours. The only respite in her otherwise bleak life is in the form Wyatt, the cute but mysterious boy she shares most of her classes with and his exuberant sister Zoie, who declares Scout her best friend after their first meeting. Things start looking up for Scout after she befriends the Campbells but everything changes when she finds out that her mother is being released from prison and wants Scout in her life again.

Scout is a good protag. She’s got so much negativity in her life but she still keeps her head up and doesn’t curse at everything and everyone for her misery. She makes do with what she’s got and doesn’t complain. At all. But, that continues to her therapy sessions and she’s very reluctant to share anything with her therapist. Because of all that’s happened to her, she suffers from anxiety and panic attacks so much so that even the touch of a man makes it difficult for her to breathe. But, somehow, Wyatt is the miraculous exception to this rule because she doesn’t react badly when he touches her. Scout is bewildered by this and when she tells her therapist about this, the woman is stumped as well. However, they decide to go into more detail about why Scout didn’t feel negative effects of Wyatt’s touch during their sessions to understand it. I was really looking forward to that, but they never do discuss why it might be that Wyatt’s touch doesn’t affect her badly. I mean, this is the classic ‘love cures mental illness’ spiel and really, I AM OVER IT. That is so not true. Someone cannot just miraculously cure it. You have to work towards getting better – every single day. It is not magic. But, that is kind of how it is portrayed in the book.

I do love how Scout stands up to her mother, though. She doesn’t take any flake from the lady and tells her in clear terms that they can have a relationship only if her mother is clean. She’s rightfully angry at her mom for abandoning her the way she did and she lets her mother know it too. But, as much as she wants, she can’t hate the woman because she is, after all, Scout’s mother – and before her father passed away, Scout’s mother had been an amazing mom. I still love how Scout did what she did and put herself first after putting her mother first for a long time. She did what was best for her and not her mother and that is the way it should be. So, kudos to Scout for that.

Then, there’s Wyatt. Wyatt is a sweet, caring boy who is intrigued with Scout since the first time he sees her. She’s the new girl and she’s as smart as he is, sharing all his AP classes. They spend time together when she starts working at the same diner as him and he starts liking her. Soon, the two of them are in a relationship and Wyatt does everything he can to make Scout smile, especially cause she smiles so little.

But, she soon becomes his entire world and she’s all he cares about. Granted, she’s been going through a lot, but Wyatt worries about everything when it comes to her. He panics if he doesn’t know where she is for a minute. Now, with everything going on in her life, I can kind of understand why he would be worried, but he starts smothering her. And, his parents notice. They waste no time in getting him therapy because they realize that everything that is happening with Scout is affecting him adversely too. This was one of the things I loved about the book. Normally, when a boyfriend/husband/fiance becomes overprotective or overbearing towards their better half because of something bad that’s going on in her life, it’s expected that the woman just take it because the guy is doing it out of love. But, that wasn’t the case here. Wyatt’s parents immediately recognized his problematic behaviour and they made him get help because what he was doing was not right. I LOVED THIS PART A WHOLE LOT.

Zoie is also a great character and I love how she supports Scout no matter what happens and vice versa. Zoie had a few issues during the course of the book and Scout was the first person she turned to for help. Scout was there for Zoie through the whole thing and really gave her all the moral support Zoie could ask for. It was really touching.

The Campbell parents were also welcoming and understanding and they were there for Scout whenever she needed it, especially Wyatt’s mom, Gina. She really took Scout in and loved her like her own daughter. The bond between them was so beautiful and I adored it.

As a whole, this book deals with a lot of heavy stuff, but I really wish that it was handled in a better way, especially the mental illness aspect.

With this book, Sydney Logan delivers a Young Adult novel with plenty of angst and heartbreak, but also friendship, hope, and young love.

Scout Ramsey has had nothing but bad luck, it seems. Her father died when she was a child, and her mother has since gone off the deep end. When her mother’s drug addiction pushes her to try and do one of the worst things possible, Scout is put into foster care and sent to live with her estranged uncle.

At her new school, she wants to lay low, despite copious rumors circling about her. She ends up befriending Zoe Campbell and attracting the attention of her brother Wyatt. I liked seeing how easily Zoe decides she wants to be Scout’s friend; it shows her kind and non-judgmental heart. It takes some time, but Scout finds comfort in this friendship, though she still holds back on some important aspects of her life.

Wyatt is intrigued by the pretty girl with the haunted eyes, and tries to make her feel comfortable and safe. She opens up to him somewhat, but he knows she’s still hiding things, trying to protect them both.

Eventually, Scout learns that she cannot handle everything on her own, and reaches out to her new friends, finding a desperately longed for mother-figure in the process. I was relieved to reach this part of the story, as it was a long time coming, in my opinion. Scout’s reluctance to ask for help is understandable, though, considering she’s basically had to fend for herself and she felt embarrassed about her problems.

Wyatt is surprisingly mature for his age in stepping up to help Scout. He puts her needs first, knowing he’ll only scare her off is he pushes her. This makes him very likeable, and makes you root for them both.

The book ends on a hopeful note, with exciting plans for the future. I’d like to see a future-take of these characters at some point.

4.5 Stars!

I just finished my first book written by Sydney Logan, and I really enjoyed it! I will have to go to Goodreads to see what else I may need to add to my TBR!! Between the Raindrops is a great Young Adult story that’s not only a love story, but also touches base on some pretty serious topics. Scout is a 17 yr old dealing with so much at such a young age. She is truly a remarkable person to come from such a rough background and continue to have so much hope. I’m so happy that she had Wyatt and Zoie. Wyatt gave her his unconditional support and showed her the true meaning of love...

“So now you know. I’m a freak.”

“No, you’re not. You’ve been dealt a shit hand in life so far, but you’re not a freak. You’re smart. You’re pretty. You’re a hard worker and you’re nice to shitty customers when they absolutely don’t deserve it. You put up with my sister which means you’re one step away from sainthood, and you have the most beautiful blue eyes I’ve ever seen. You’re not a freak. You’re awesome. And it kills me that you don’t know that.”

While Zoie was the best friend a girl can have...

“Zoie Campbell, on my first day of school, you chose me. In that moment, you became my one and only friend in the whole world. You loved me unconditionally and without question. You have no idea how much I needed you. You covered my scars and healed my heart. I can never thank you enough for that.”

Sometimes just having the right people by your side can make a difference in any situation. The Campbell family were the right people and they never gave up on Scout!

This is a hard to keep the tears at bay novel and I wouldn’t want to change anything about it. Between the Raindrops tells the story of Scout and how she came out of bad place to find love in the most unlikely of places. Scout has been taken away from her mother and put in the home of her dad’s brother. She starts thinking that this is a better option than being in a group home but sometimes the best things are too good to be true. On her first day in a new school she meets Wyatt and their meeting is like a punch to the gut for Wyatt. He is instantly attracted to her and when they start getting to know each its all he can see and think about. All the while Scout is having to live with another monster and once Wyatt finds out he will stop at nothing to protect her. Being with Wyatt gives Scout the opportunity to find family, love and friendships. It’s a tale of fighting the monsters in your life to finally having the one you always dreamt of having.

When Scout and Wyatt embark on their relationship it becomes something that neither of them has ever experienced. I loved that they both aren’t tainted by other people and that Scout is open to others. They both teach each other different things about one another’s life that will help them get to know the heart of the other. Scout comes from darkness and with Wyatt she can find a light she has missed. They both must find a way to keep the light when the past comes back and fight for their relationship when things get to hard. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking story of surviving the hand your dealt to becoming a stronger person because of it.

Sydney Logan has done it again. She’s written a book that addresses a difficult issue—drug addiction—with honesty and heart. The protagonist of the story, Scout Ramsey, has had a really rough life since her father died and her mother descended into addiction to ease her pain. That is until Zoie Campbell befriends her on her first day at her new high school. She then meets Zoie’s twin brother, Wyatt. From then on, her life begins to change for the better. That’s not to say her life is all hearts and flowers. She had to grow up quickly, but she’s never learned how to navigate some of the typical teenage issues—bullying, falling in love, finding out what family really means, and finding your place in the world.

During one really low point, Scout has a conversation with Wyatt and Zoie’s mom, Gina, who is a nurse. She is floored by Gina’s caring nature. Scout says, “You don’t even know me. Why do you care?” Gina’s answer just melted my heart: “I don’t have to know you to love you, Scout. You’re a child.” Scout’s response is, “I’m not your child.” Which has Gina saying, “No, but my child loves you. … But, even if they didn’t … even if they didn’t know you at all … I would still love you, Scout. I’m a mother. I’m a nurse. Love is instinctual to me.” *sigh*

Throughout this story, my heart just broke for Scout and everything she had to endure in the few short years since she lost her father. But, there were so many uplifting parts too. I was so happy she found people who could help her navigate her world and move forward with her life.

Ahhhhhh!!!! This book was simply EVERYTHING!!! Definitely one of my top reads of the year. This is a sad, but remarkable and beautiful story of not giving up, and finding peace and happiness and coming out on the other side after being dealt every crap hand in this world.

Scout is a 17 year old girl who has had to mature much faster than your average child, given the poor choices of the adults in her life, and their constant disregard for her safety and her heart. By some miracle or twist of fate, she winds up at a new school where she is blessed with each member of the Campbell Family. Through them, she finds friendship, strength, protection, and love.

Wyatt and Scout had such an amazing connection and bond from early on. Wyatt's desire to protect and nurture Scout and keep her safe was beautiful. Watching their relationship grow and change and strengthen over time was so special. I loved Zoie from the start in her openness and how she welcomed Scout so easily. And everyone in this world deserves to know of a mother's love in a way similar to Mrs. Campbell and her interactions and selflessness when it came to Scout and opening up her home to a virtual stranger.

This book was so unbelievably sad and tragic at times, but from that came a beautiful story of second chances, hope and love. One of the best books I have read this year by far. A definite 5+ Star read!!!
