The "Do Not" series crosses several genres: Legal thriller, political thriller, and erotic thriller. The four main characters appear in both books; however, it's not necessary to read the books in order. They are completely stand alone.
Please feel free to contact me. I am always thrilled to hear from readers and interested in what you think. You can get in touch on my Facebook page, through Goodreads, on my website, or by email at elaine.crockett@verizon.net. I read each and every message and always reply.
I absolutely loved this book! A fast paced crime/legal thriller that I just couldn't seem to put down! The numerous twists and turns kept you guessing right to the very end. The detail in the entire book really helped to immerse the reader into the story. As this is the second book, it was not necessary to read the one that proceeds it (although I can't wait to read 'Do Not Assume'). The characters were well developed and the back story from the first book was mentioned in enough detail to keep the reader informed without ruining the first book. The plot of the story was flowed well, and was very realistic. This was my first book by Elaine Williams Crockett, but it definitely will not be the last; bring on 'Do Not Assume'! Thanks again Elaine for the book!
This book is addicting, my goodness. I love a good political, crime novel (it's evident if you look at my book shelf or my lists on Netflix...) so getting the chance to read this book made me so excited! I've been more focused on romances recently that I almost forgot this genre existed!
Do Not Ask is the second book in the Warren Alexander series, but you don't need to be caught up to understand a thing! This book was a smooth read without the background, since Elaine fills in any big holes that you need to know along the way. She also makes this book full of fast twists and turns that will keep you addicted and following every story line.
Every part of this book was fantastic - which is shocking! It's rare to find a book that I can't pick apart some major flaw (so kudos to Elaine!). I loved the speed of the story and I found it to be unique and thrilling. I didn't want to put this book down! Alongside all of that goodness, I also got heavily involved with trying to guess who did what. Since there was just enough back story to get the reader going, it makes it easy to follow along and play the detective game along with the plot.
The book is also realistic, which makes it an easy read. There's no aliens or crazy conspiracies - it's a fiction novel that makes it feel so real. There are some aspects of this book that seem a little odd, but it's not surprising that they exist by any means (some adult chasing after young, pretty girls might make you squeamish, but it happens).
So, the question is - where do I want to see Elaine go from here? I definitely think she's talented and needs to keep writing! This book was excellent, and I hope she continues writing to get better. My expectations are for her to write another novel, and I hope she's able to write it so it's not necessary to read all of the books before it - that should help gain some more readers. And hopefully, this book goes a little more mainstream. It's awesome! It's so good that it could be on a shelf next to Kathy Reichs in my local book story!
Five out of five stars.
I received a free copy of this book from the author (Elaine Williams Crockett) in exchange for an honest review.
Another fabulous political page turning thriller! Ahhhh the suspense was incredible. I lost a lot of sleep reading this one! I kept saying to myself "just one more chapter, then sleep".... but it was worth it! Do Not Ask is the sequel Do Not Assume, was excited to get it from the author as I had enjoyed the first one so much! (I do hope there will be more.) It follows scandals, cover-ups, murders, conspiracies and intrigue in Washington D.C., and though fictional, it seems it could be ripped from current headlines with the never ending stream of scandal that seems to flow from there. I love how Elaine Crockett writes, as I am always kept guessing, and the outcome is never quite what one would expect. In Do Not Assume, the primary focus was Warren Alexander, but in Do Not Ask, it was Davis Rideout with Warren trying to untangle several mysteries that all seem to be connected (but how?) to his son-in-law Davis.... the disappearance of the President's daughters, the disappearance of a Supreme Court legal aid, thefts from ultra wealthy estates, and an bodies found on the property of his daughter and Davis. How were all linked? Was Davis guilty? Could the high power lawyer his daughter is married to be capable of such things? I do hope that Davis, who is known for his philandering, matures a little in the next one instead of acting all the time like a 15 year old with an over-abundance of testosterone and has to sample anything that comes his way cause he has not quite figured out what he likes yet. Being middle aged, he should have that figured out by now. But then again, his infidelities made me not like Davis quite so much, and that it was quite possible that he could be capable of other crimes as well. Another excellent book from the pen of Ms. Crockett!
What a fabulous political/legal thriller!! I have not read this author before, but she is definitely on my list now! A very suspenseful story with several crimes, including 3 murders, two of which are the President's daughters! Warren Alexander is a Supreme Court Justice, after being in the FBI, now trying to untangle several mysteries at once. His daughter Reed is married to his roomate in law school,a man who was very much into a new girl every night. Alexander wonders about this man,Davis, as some questions seem to bring parts of both crimes to his door. The characters are wonderful, the plots amazing. and this whole story is so enjoyable to read! The twists and turns will keep you guessing, with some very surprising outcomes! I highly recommend this book to thriller readers , especially those who enjoy legal and political shorts that keep you reading! I received this story from BookGobbler which I am so thankful for the chance to meet a new to me author whose writing talents I enjoy!!
I read another of Elaine’s books “Do Not Assume” and I felt she was a really good author who was very clever when it came to story-telling and subtle misdirection. This book shows she is nothing short of a master creator and wordsmith. I am usually adept at guessing the twists and turns in a book but this is something I can’t seem to do with her books. She is accomplished at weaving a story that keeps you turning the pages and pulls you in with the realism and connection to the characters. Then she surprises you with her mastery of misdirection. I won’t give away any spoilers because this book is well worth the time to read it. Just know that she has created a story of family, love, loss, mystery, history, debauchery, murder…and so much more. It is easy to lose yourself in this story and she will keep you guessing to the very end! The author sent me her book in exchange for an honest review and that is what I am providing. This is a book and author I highly recommend!! Enjoy.
A Good Thriller Which Will Make You Bite Your Nails
“Do Not Ask” by Elaine Williams Crockett is the second book featuring Judge Warren Alexander, a former FBI agent who is now a Supreme Court Justice. Let me start by saying that this novel can be read as a standalone, and I felt no need to read the former book “Do Not Assume” in order to understand what’s going on, which was a very good start, ‘in my book’. I have been searching for a good political related thriller, and I must first state that despite its problems, “Do Not Ask” has a fresh take on things, ditching the norm of an investigating agent/officer/spy. I found this refreshing, and I even learned to embrace the changeovers between the omnipotent narrator and Alexander’s own perspective, narrated by himself.
Justice Warren Alexander is being asked to help investigate the disappearance (and possible murder) of the president’s twin daughters, who had a casual affair with his promiscuous skirt-chaser son-in-law and old college buddy – Davis Rideout. At the same time, his legal aid Lilly had disappeared, all evidence pointing at Justice A himself. The entire plot revolves around Davis’ riverside country estate-mansion “Blackhall” which is engulfed in mystery due to the suicide of Josephine Rideout, sometime in the 19th century. I can go on with the plot, but the novel takes you through many characters, the author dispersing so many misleading clues from one to the other, that anything above my brief intro will spoil it. Once you accepted that Justice A does things in an unorthodox way, insisting on being both an FBI agent, a defence attorney and a judge (I seriously doubt anyone would risk his prestigious justice position/reputation like him) – then you really grow fond of him.
As stated above, Ms. Crockett does well to shift the suspicion from one character to the other, and up until the end – you would suspect someone else, who may or may not be the eventual culprit. I normally get this right from the first few chapter, so hat’s off and great job!
The novel is not without flaws, which for me - meant it could have been a real smash otherwise. These start to emerge around half way through, and comprise from small problems with details, characters which supposedly play a big role but aren't deep enough and then this plot-line is neglected (such as the role of The National Adviser to the president), too much information on late-introduced character (such as an art collector, who should have been introduced much sooner). In more than one occasions it seemed like new material is introduce to fit the author's ultimate conclusion, rather than introduce these sooner and let us - the readers - have a crack at solving the case ourselves.
Despite these issues, I was biting my nails as I wanted to see who is the culprit, so I must say Ms. Crockett did a very good job as a suspense author. At the end of the day, a novel – especially a thriller – is measured by whether the reader enjoyed it or not, and I full-mouthed say that I enjoyed it. It made me want to read the previous Judge Alexander novel.
I have received this book FREE on BookGobbler.com - Free books in return to honest reviews and paperback raffles!!
Do Not Ask is Elaine Williams Crockett’s second book about former FBI agent turned federal judge Warren Alexander. Now the Supreme Court’s newest justice, Justice Alexander is drawn into the investigation when the President’s twin daughters go missing after visiting Alexander’s playboy son-in-law’s estate. A scandal threatens when it emerges that the twins may have been blackmailing prominent married men with sex tapes, and Alexander must team up with his former FBI partner to find out what happened. The twins aren’t the only missing women in DC, though, and when one of Alexander’s law clerks is the next to disappear, he finds himself under suspicion and must race against time to clear his own name and discover the true culprit… before his own daughter becomes the killer’s next victim.
This is a brilliantly written and researched whodunnit with so many twists and turns I never knew what was coming next. The author has done her research superbly, and her knowledge of the inner workings of DC’s political system as well as a thorough understanding of the law and its procedures. There is a small section (during a murder trial in which Alexander is defending the accused) where the descriptions of how exactly DNA analysis and comparisons work where things got a little esoteric for the layperson to understand, but it was detail that was actually pivotal to the plot and the author took the time to break it down carefully for the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed the explanations, and the expert ‘court testimony’ in which they were presented.
I must also congratulate the author on the quality of editing and proofreading which has been applied to this novel. In a book with 72 chapters, I didn’t find a single typo, something rare even in books from the Big 5 publishers.
Elaine Williams Crockett has a deep understanding of the culture in which she chooses to set her stories, and this shows through in that no part of the narrative ever feels far-fetched or unlikely. Even the most unexpected twists are still completely logical within the wider context of the story, though nothing was so predictable that I lost interest. As a political/crime thriller, this was one of the most intriguing and well-written I’ve ever had the privilege of reading. If you love a good whodunnit full of salacious details and clever twists, you really shouldn’t miss this one. Thoroughly enjoyable, and I’m happy to award it five stars.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for review through Reader’s Favorite.
Chapter 2 opens with this: "I had no idea my son-in-law had engaged in a threesome with the President's daughters." Shocker, right? And from here on in, the action never stops. Three murders later, Justice Warren Alexander-who narrates a good portion of the book-is stymied about the motives and the killers. It appears no one is innocent and yet DNA evidence suggests an unlikely suspect. What follows is multi-layered story that includes political intrigue, corruption, criminal conspiracy, money laundering, betrayal, and long-buried secrets. And if you think you've figured it out...well, you haven't until you read the final page! This one kept me burning the midnight oil; it's so well-written and poignant that I kept telling myself, "Just one more chapter." Now will go back and read her first one. Do yourself a favor and savor this one! Many thanks to Elaine Williams Crockett for this signed copy!
I loved this book as much as Do Not Assume. It has all the same elements as her last book,.. wonderfully developed characters, suspense, twists and turns on every page, surprises, and intrigue. I couldnot wait to read this book, and anxiously look forward to any additional books that she writes!
This is the second novel with basically the same characters. It is not essential to have read the first novel Do Not Assume. I really liked this book! It is full of intrigue and plot twists. The clues are there if the story is read carefully. The descriptions of the settings are particularly well done and in detail, which add realistic touches to the novel. The DNA evidence is complex, but understandable for the layman. The legal points are important and woven well into the story. At the end, some of the characters (mostly Reed and Davis) changed a little because of their experiences. Again, some people may dismiss the back-stabbing, power-grabbing tactics of almost all the characters as fiction. Not so! Most of those in power within the Beltway think that they can do anything with no repercussions. Few must answer for their abuses in fiction and in real life.
REVIEW BY: MARTA TANDORI FOR READERS' FAVORITE. A great plot, lots of tension and conflict, and plenty of suspense, Do Not Ask has it all, and then some. The story is impeccably researched with a great deal of attention paid to the finer historical details. However, despite the research and attention to detail, Crockett doesn’t slow down the momentum – not even for a minute. The pacing, narrative and dialogue are spot on as the reader is sucked into the story from the first paragraph on. Most of the characters are flawed in some way, adding further dimension to an already great story shaded by equal parts mystery and intrigue. Do Not Ask is a flavorful, meaty stew, chock full of hearty characters and a rich storyline that is sure to satisfy even the most finicky readers.
First of all, thank you, Elaine, for sending me a copy of this book!!! I was so excited since I enjoyed "Do Not Assume" so much.
Secondly, thriller readers, you will love this one. It is a fast paced legal thriller with great detail and twists and turns. The characters are well developed and easy to love or hate (there is nothing worse than a novel with characters you don't care about.....ok, well, some things are worse, but you get my point). There were two moments in this story that I thought I had it all figured out - I was wrong and that's what I love!! Didn't see that end coming!! I highly recommend this quick read!!
Great sequel! The first half of the book really does a good job of building up and then the second half comes in and really kicks into high gear. So many twists and turns that I almost had a tough time hanging on to the ride. I am sure glad I did though! It really doesn't get much better as a crime/thriller when the reveal is unexpected and you feel foolish for not seeing it beforehand. The characters were dynamic and well thought out. The pacing was steady. The writing was descriptive and easy to follow (unlike this review). I can't wait for the next one! Excellent job, Elaine!
Wow! Just when I thought it was all figured out there was another suspect. I read the book within two days as I could not put it down. The first two chapters had me wondering if this book was for me. I continued on and am so glad that I did. An exciting courtroom drama, family drama, and so much more. Every zig and every zag had me turning the pages. I am eager to read more by this author.
DO NOT ASK BY ELAINE WILLIAMS CROCKETT is a fast paced legal thriller that will keep you turning the pages until dawn! Solid characters, DO NOT ASK crosses the genre barrier as a cross between great mystery and great legal thriller!
Supreme Court Justice Warren Alexander, father, husband, lawyer, ex-FBI and Judge hunts down the killer of the Presidents twin daughters & his missing, paralegal. Problem is the investigation hits very very close to home, as in his home & son in law's home!
Fast paced mystery legal thriller that kept me flipping the pages! Twist and turns that fools even the best armchair detective, DO NOT ASK BY ELAINE WILLIAMS CROCKETT is a ten star thriller and must read!
I recieved this book free from goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. When the book arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was wrapped as a gift and a gift it truly was! An extraordinary book of intrigue and revenge!
When the President of the United States learns his twin daughters are missing, he requests that former FBI agent and present Supreme Court Justice, Warren Alexander be brought into the case. But when his daughter’s dead bodies are located at Blackhall, an estate owned by Alexander’s daughter and son-in-law; anger clouds the President’s judgment and revenge becomes his driving ambition.
When Alexander’s law clerk vanishes; the President takes steps to assure he will leave the court; as well as steps that result in death! Can Alexander find his Law Clerk and free an innocent man before he himself falls victim to the President’s revenge?
This is an excellent political thriller. I was contacted by the author for review, and I realize I had also done her other book, DO NOT ASSUME! Blurb-The Presidents twin daughters are missing. An old estate with a long history (a touch of ghosts) is the focal point of this terrific twister. Then Judge Alexander becomes involved as his daughter is married to the man that owns this estate, his law clerk goes missing!! You won't believe how this story gets its twists. Definite favorite of mine.
The President's twin daughters disappear sparking an FBI investigation. Supreme Court Justice Warren Alexander, a former FBI agent, gets involved in the investigation and when his law clerk also disappears, he is convinced the two cases are connected.
The three bodies are all found at Blackhall, the family estate of his son in law, Davis Rideout.
This story has it all; sex, politics, blackmail and murder. It's a twisty legal thriller, an intriguing murder investigation, and in the background, the dark family history surrounding Blackhall.
It is a gripping tale that will definitely grab you right at the start and hold you enthralled till the end. The characters are well developed and the plot is cleverly constructed, providing plenty of unexpected surprises. The author's writing style is straight forward and unemotional, totally appropriate to the story, and the scientific details of DNA are clearly explained so as to be understandable even to my unscientific brain.
I loved it! It kept me on the edge of my seat and the journey to the truth excited me every step of the way. It's a great read in every sense and I highly recommend it.
A sexy legal thriller about sex, politics and forensic science. Legal thriller fans can look forward to plenty of heady judicial maneuvering, as well as some truly memorable courtroom action. However, what distinguishes the book from others in the genre is its thorough examination of DNA evidence in prosecution. In this regard, the second installment in Elaine Williams Crockett’s Warren Alexander series is considerably more complex than its predecessor. As Crockett indicates in her acknowledgements, she’s done her research, and it shows. Through the lens of this frisky crime thriller, Do Not Ask poses important questions about long-held beliefs about DNA evidence into question.
Wow! Do Not Ask me how late I stayed up to finish this thriller. It is jam-packed with action, twists and turns, and fascinating characters. The President's two daughters go missing. A Supreme Court justice, who was an FBI agent, is drawn into the investigation. His son-in-law , who is also his former college roommate, is connected to the disappearance. A family estate with a ghost is the scene of the crime. This book has so many bombshells that just when you think you have all the answers, another surprise pops up. I highly recommend this exciting book.
What a great fast paced political/legal thriller!! I was hooked from the very first few pages and had a hard time putting this book down. What if you were newly appointed to the Supreme Court and did not agree with the way the Supreme Court made their decisions? And in the midst of being unhappy with the political arena, your family is put under a microscope. The Presidents twin daughters are missing? And since they had the option to tell Secret Service to get lost, there were no eyes on them. When Supreme Court Justice Alexander is asked to assist in the investigation to find his daughters, by the President, since he was former FBI, he graciously decided to help. The twins were murdered and buried, of all places, on his son-in-laws property, Blackhall Mansion. The FBI wanted someone to pin this murder on. There seems to be a conspiracy, and the FBI already had their sights on someone. Since the original attorney, was found dead at the base of a cliff. Justice Alexander felt compelled to act as the new attorney. As the trial proceeds, there is another body found on the Blackhall property. Could this possibly be the body of Justice Alexander’s law clerk, Lilly, who suddenly went missing? Who is killing these women and why? Did his son-in-law, Davis, kill them? Will this horrible scandal ruin Justice’s daughter, Reed’s marriage and her life? What does the White a house have to do with these murders? Is Justice Alexander being set up? This book was so fantastic that I can’t wait for the next one to appear. The plot and character development were genius. It keeps the reader enthralled until the very end! Definitely a page turner for sure!!
Thank You Elaine Crockett for taking the trouble to sent me the book twice and I am more than glad to review this book honestly.
Do Not Ask is a legal crime thriller with court room dramas and skeletons in the closet of high flying individuals in Washington DC. Well, when the story starts with the President's daughters themselves fulfilling their sexual proclivities, we know the story is going to be oven hot. Justice Warren Alexander gets involved as a unofficial aide in finding the missing girls to find himself in a hole having to defend his son-in-law in the crime. The story is told smoothly with glimpses of life from different characters. The political crimes are depicted well and was compelling to read. The only thing that kind of put me off was Reed's character which kind of felt shallow and weak.Of course the sexual scenes are not too graphic and its mostly implied so it was easy not too feel too disgusted about it. I expected a more pulse pounding and nerve wracking end but still it was a good solid thriller. Expecting to read more adventures of Warren Alexander.
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I would not recommend for anyone under the age of 15 just because of the subject matter but I was completely taken by this book. There was 1 unexpected turn of events after another and it follows through to the ending. It appeals to most types of readers (except for those who only read science fiction, fantasy or supernatural). Everyone else is covered. There is a touch or these in the book but not enough to entice those particular readers. It is a definite must have for your personal library and a re-read. It is hitting my favorites shelf for sure. This author is brilliant and I will be looking for more books by them.
This book was amazing. It flowed so perfectly that I didn't want to put it down. It was a nail biter for me which is rare. I loved that there wasn't too many characters to follow but enough that you knew how deep the deceit ran. I liked Reed a lot even though she wasn't the smartest. She was too naive but it made sense, she was so young. I love how deep the connection between Reed and Justice Alexander ran. His love for his daughter and concern for her safety was always number one.
Do Not Ask is a page-turning thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end! Crockett’s legal background is evident in this plot set in Washington DC. Twist after twist unfolds during the search for who’s responsible for the death of three high-profile women, two being the President’s twin daughters. Love, revenge, sex, ghosts, and murder, this book has a bit of it all!
What a wild ride! There were so many twists and turns that I had to keep reevaluating who did what. Every time I knew who did it some other evidence pointed in another direction. The characters were human with their own skeletons in the closet. This was a really fun read. I'm putting her last book "Do Not Assume" on my reading list. I hope there will be more books coming in this series.
Thanks to the author for sending me a copy of "Do Not Ask" in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the author for supplying me with a copy of her second book, Do Not Ask., for an honest review.
Do Not Ask is the second in the legal/crime thriller Supreme Court Justice Warren Alexander series. I read Elaine Crockett's first book, Do Not Assume, so this one is no surprise to me that it's every bit as good good as the first.
Women are disappearing in Washington, D.C. ; The President's daughters go missing and are later found dead and a United State Supreme Court law clerk vanishes from her Georgetown apartment. "We've nailed the bastard who killed Eden and Echo Hines." An assumed killer is locked up but the killings continue.
Elaine is a master of details . Do Not Ask reminds me of real life D.C. with its cover-ups and scandals plus a murder here and there and Justice Alexander is the perfect protagonist to set things right. Get plot!
I hope Elaine will follow in the footsteps of Catherine Coulter / J. T. Ellison and keep this series going until the well runs dry.
This is a fictional political thriller about a Supreme Court judge who is personally asked by the president to work with the FBI and solve the mysterious disappearance of his twin daughters, Eden and Echo. When the judge discovers that the two of them were having an affair with his own son-in-law on the day of their disappearance, the case takes on a whole new level as things become personal.
This book was a struggle and a chore to read. It was definitely the worst book of 2017, in my opinion. It was full of unrepentant sinful behavior, erotica, and LGBTQ scenes. Not my cup of tea... it made me feel unclean just reading it. The first one in this series, Do Not Assume, was okay. This one was not.
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. I absolutely loved it! She has an incredible talent for writing a book that you can’t stand to put down! A political thriller that will engage you from beginning to end. Highly recommend this book
As the synopsis says the President's daughters come up missing. They live a wild life, so it's hard to say what might have happened. Later their bodies are found on the estate of a supreme court judges daughter's home. Her husband is the obvious suspect, but he was on a plane for China at the time of death. So an old black servant who has worked for Reed's husband's family is the man who is arrested for the murders. But Reed and Davis are positive he wouldn't hurt anyone, and he's 78 years old.
Meanwhile the Judge's assistant comes up missing also, her body is also found in Reed's mansion. A lot of investigation goes on, even the judge himself become suspect, since the 3rd girl dead works for him and was soon to be taking a job with his son in law. The judge's biggest concern is his daughter, and his own reputation. He knows his son in law is a cheat, but is he a murderer?
I gave this story 5 stars because I couldn't figure out who was guilty. Most mystery thrillers are easy to solve but this one had many twist and turns. There was layer upon layer of story, and many suspects. I hate it when I know who the killer is from almost page 1 so this was refreshing.
I was given this book in exchange for a fair honest review. All opinions are solely my own and have no ill intent towards the author, publisher or promoters of this book. I did see a few minor issues but they didn't take away from the story.
