Why I wanted to read this one…….I was really excited to get a chance to read Project Apex as I was looking forward to reading something totally different than I normally would choose to read. I am glad that I accepted the opportunity to read this novel.
What it’s all about……A zombie style apocalyptic novel with superhuman soldiers.
Synopsis: Richard Draven is a scientist interested in the healing properties of primates and transferring them to humans. When he discovers a new species of monkey with amazing regenerative powers, he has no idea that his report will set off a chain of events with dire consequences.

Why I actually enjoyed this one…The action in this book is non-stop and described very well that I could really see it happening and felt the terror from the characters that were caught in the crossfire.
What I didn’t like…..Some of the events that took place was a little too graphic for my taste and I was a little lost in some of the unfamiliar detail.
PROJECT APEX by MICHAEL BRAY is an action-packed, tense, fast-paced, fascinating, and descriptive tale that did hold my interest right from the very start and as more was being revealed it was hard to put this novel down. The ending does end a little abruptly though to entice you to read the second book in this series.
MICHAEL BRAY delivers a well-written read here with an interesting and unique storyline. The premise of this tale plays out so realistically and to me it was an absolutely scary and terrifying look into an apocalyptic threat that had me fearing for this “new world” and what it means to the future of mankind. As I was reading this I definitely could imagine this story being made into a movie.
Overall, I did mostly enjoy this novel and might consider reading the second book in this series sometime in the future. Would recommend!
I received a free digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled to read Project Apex as I was ready for a book that had a theme completely different to things I had been reading in recent months. This was a breath of fresh air in regards to plot. A refreshing change that was hugely welcomed.
Project Apex grabbed my interest right from the start and by the time more and more was revealed I was totally hooked on the fascinating concepts being presented in the book. It is one of those books that you know is fiction but makes you wonder how it would be if it was a real life situation, because it's not that out of reach and it would be pretty darn scary if it came to be. Really terrifying.

If you are going to mess with human beings it's likely something is going to go horribly wrong, and it does. These superhumans have been created, designed to be the ultimate weapon used by the US Government in warfare, the problem is this...they don't want to take orders anymore and go rogue, it's not pretty. Just imagine. These human beings have been designed to be killing machines and no longer are they listening to orders on who the enemy is. It's a freaking political and military disaster. Red alert.
How are they going to stop them now?
The book is really thrilling and climbs in pace as the book goes on, it grabs you more and more until you are just flicking pages desperate to get to the end and then...an ending that makes you want to throw the book across the room, not because you hate it, but because it's so darn good and it keeps you hanging, desperate for more.
The characters in this book are really well developed and the writing is fantastic, I really could not find a huge amount of fault in the book at all. I really enjoyed reading it and I was not sure whether I would take to it just from the synopsis, but by golly I did!
I really recommend this book to those that like an edge of your seat thriller that challenges the brain and stretches you a bit. 4.5 stars upped to 5 stars for Project Apex. Recommended reading.
Thanks to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and professional review.
That was very, very good. A terrifying look at an apocalyptic threat that could in reality, actually happen. A science experiment gone wrong, or right depending on which side you're on. It's happened before. This was a really really, good story. The whole concept is just bone chilling. The action scenes were spot on and I spent the entire time just thinking how awesome this would be as a movie. I'll definitely be checking out the sequels to this book.
Bray's Project Apex is an incredible read that garners to be relished from word to paragraph to page. The science and technology is so realistic that you feel this is more science fact than fiction.
Dealing with the ills of the world today, Bray weaves an intricate tale that at times, you wonder if the new world order is the way to go. This leads an exciting balance act between what is right and what is wrong.
He displays no easy answers with the conundrum that he presents with extreme ease. The plot is never once bogged down with detail but drives the plot forward. Keeping the reader totally involved in the different characters and able to do this on a global scale show the mastery of this tale.
Bray writing grows and his unique voice has really improved through leaps and bounds. He was always phenomenal but he has surpassed this with a well rounded elegance.
The action plays so realistically that one fears for the future and mankind through its explosive conclusion.
With a flair of Crichton, Levin and his own personal touch, Apex is an exciting read from start to finish. With amazing, smartly written characters, exotic and domestic locations and set pieces that makes this a complete winner.
I demand you read this book and devour every word. The future in dark fiction is upon us and his name is Bray.

I have been meaning to pick this book up for a while now, yet every time I thought I had put aside some spare time, to really give it the attention that it deserved, something has managed to crop up to prevent it. Eventually, I managed to pick it up and pretty much devoured it in one go, I truly struggled to put it down, it really is that gripping.
When a friendly basketball match at Camp Bland; a military training facility in Florida, goes wrong and 67 soldiers are butchered by just a few men, questions are asked and the sinister reality behind a secret government project; Project Apex begins to unfold.
Tracing back from a new breed of monkey found in the Kongo, Richard Draven discovers the Timika Tribe. A tribe that seemingly, has amazing immunity to ilness.
Scientist; Robert Genaro is tasked with researching and developing cell regeneration, the plan, to create the perfect soldier. A soldier that is impervious to pain or cold. One that doesn't require food or sleep, is mentally superior and doesn't age. Perfect for the modern military, right? Wrong.
The serum is a virus, it acts upon its host like a parasite, increasing aggresion levels and testosterone to dangerous levels; roid rage. It quickly becomes apparent that the virus is contagious, it can be spread via saliva or blood, bringing the world a whole new threat of terror.
A rogue team of soldiers, led by Joshua Cook, become hell bent on developing a new age of evolution, they kidnap Genaro and infect him to help them develop the virus; to become an enhanced level of civilisation. A civilisation no longer plagued with death, disease or hunger.
As the story unfolds, Joshua intends to share his 'gift' with the world, he loses any interest in his own mortality and his arrogance forces American President; Ron Fitzgerald into action.
So, what did I think of the story? I thought it was absolutely phenomenal. It is told from various locations from all around the world, with aspects from many different characters; Government officials, scientists, soldiers, two young Iraqi brothers. Even the cleaner from Genaro's lab gets in on the dialogue to share his theories from beneath his tin foil hat.
The size, and scale of the story must have taken absolutely ages to map out and research. What's impressive, is that at no point does Bray attempt to make any shortcuts with the story development or dialogue. Its all in there, in abundance.
I have read another book involving 'enhanced' military personnel; Afraid, by Jack Kilborn. I was interested as I began this book to see how the similarities would pan out. There were none, it was taken in a totally different, and somewhat unexpected direction.
This is a monumental project for Bray, it sees him making that transition from his previous day job to full time author. You can see from Project Apex that he has been using his time constructively. I have also noticed a trend in the subject of his last few releases, lending itself more away from the traditional horror genre and into more thrill based territory. Not that I'm complaining. Based on the quality of this book, he has nothing to fear moving forward. I, for one, applaud him for this effort. Bring on Eradication.
I would give it six if I could, but I can't. So five out of five for me. A late contender for a top three book of the year.
Project Apex - A zombie apocalypse novel dressed up as a bio-terrorist sci-fi novel. A story with a fun little premise, but somehow it just missed the mark. What bugged me the most was portions of the writing style. It contained great vocabulary, and the paragraphs presented wonderful plot flow. But the individual sentences… Portions of the writing were great, but in significant swaths the sentences were formulaic, stilted, and rhythmically repetitive to their neighbors. This made for very unpleasant cadenced reading passages. I did appreciate the way Mr. Bray ended the story. He didn’t try to pull a rabbit out of the hat on the last page, but ended the story in a satisfactory conclusion.
A complimentary advance copy of this book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of review at Netgalley.com .
I had thought this would be a ho-hum regular zombie novel but it is actually quite different and has a refreshing twist. Six years after a scientist makes a discovery of a brand new species of monkey with miraculous and regenerative powers, he realizes that he may have discovered mankind's doom. A new breed of man has been created by combining monkey DNA and human DNA. These supermen have now gone rogue to create a new dawn for humankind which includes basically decimating most people and recruiting new supermen to help with their cause by biting (told you there was a zombie twist here) those who they feel will contribute to the New World Order. The novel is full of action and fast paced. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Highly recommended to readers who love a good zombie novel but one that is so much more and different.
This is one more example why I don't like series. I am a fan of stand-alone novels. But because I won it in a competition I gave it a chance (thanks toMaxine and Michael)
Scientists playing God, trying to "improve" human DNA- it was to be expected that something is going terribly wrong. We are introduced to several characters who probably will play an important role all over the world but we don't get the chance to bond with them. Joshua, the "firstborn" of this new evolution is going to change the world as we know it. And his methods are cruel.
The writing is gripping, the events devastating, but it leaves me wondering. In the end there are more questions than answers...
I picked this book purely because of the author. I didn't read what it was about or anything. The I my reason being I have read many of this authors books and all have been great. They were all extreme horror books so this one was completely new to me not being an extreme horror as it is mainly all I read. But I have to say this was a really good read and I was immersed within the first few pages. So much so I have just bought the sequel to it. It's a good strong story with many great characters that two into a lot of questions we have all probably asked with no real answers before. It also gives you an insight to what people go through and there thoughts. All in all a great book and I would recommend.
This is an incredibly scary book because it is very easy to imagine its premise coming to fruition. The genetic genie has already been let out of its bottle and only time will tell if that is for the good of the human race. Who knows what people out there are doing now to modify viruses, chemicals, and whatever else they can think of to give them power? It is terrifying to think about and this book tells of a possible result of man's desire to control things that are beyond control.
This book starts with a scientist looking for an unknown species of monkey that is supposed to bestow amazing powers of recovery on humans. He finds the monkey, begins his research, but then is laughed out of the scientific community. Another scientist picks up where he left off at the behest of the highest levels of government. He actually believes he is doing good and that his research will save lives. Instead, as usual, the arrogance of humanity may very well lead to its demise.
The story is intelligent and doesn't insult readers by dumbing down the science. The science is probably the most fascinating thing about the book The characters are very well-defined so readers can understand their motivations, both good and bad--and in-between. The character of Joshua is especially compelling. Artificially enhanced, he comes to believe he is the savior of the world and he will go to any lengths to become that savior.
At the end of the book, it felt like the continuation of the human species was in doubt. The enemy is formidable and seems to be unstoppable. The action in the book is relentless and described so well you can see it happening and feel the terror of regular people caught in its wake. You are also strangely seduced by the character of Joshua because who wouldn't want to have the power he does?
I can't wait for the next book. This one is very highly recommended.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Project Apex begins as a research to alter the genetics of people, to be used as enhanced soldiers, a war tool. A project the authorities thought they had in check, until they find out they don't. Rogue enchanted soldiers create chaos all across the globe, led by a man set on purifying the earth to begin anew.
The book start out kinda boring and slow, showing how the DNA used to create superior humans were found. It then leads on to the plot of the book, starting with the build-up and then progresses further and further into the chaos, as leaders struggle to control the panic and havoc all over the world.
The book is okay. It has adventure and is faced space, moving the story along as it need be without any stalling or unnecessary stops. It gives some food for thoughts, as characters discusses view points regarding who are the terrorists, who are they good guys and it all depends on your viewpoint and where you come from, to conspirational thoughts about the governments and what they let or do not let the common people know.
I might pick up the next book in the series if I fall over it, but I won't hunt for it. But the book wasn't a waste of time, but entertaining in its way.
enjoyed the different take on super soldier and viral outbreak combination, but sometimes got tripped up with the overlapping dialog; not a lot of delineation between the characters. other than that nit-pick, great read and look forward to others.
This was a typical superhuman v. human story with a cliffhanger so you have to read the next novel to see what happens. It would have been a better movie than a novel.
The world is in turmoil after numerous attacks and the government thinks they have a solution, boy are they wrong! Thanks to research done by Dr. Draven, they think they can turn men into super humans. Joshua is the first turned and that's when things start going horribly wrong. Joshua starts his own unstoppable army and the world is at his mercy. If you love fast paced, action packed stories with well developed characters I urge you to give this book a read. Well done Michael Bray, now onto the second book.
What will happen is already clear when the young researcher discovers the monkeys with mysterious powers. It is clear that super-soldier will be created, it is clear that the Americans will counts their chicken before they're hatched, and that we all will be in danger, despite the incumbent president, even though Republican, does not seem the type to shoot first and then ask. The volume ends in an apparently not granted way, but, given the wires not pulled left lying around, you may just think that, at the end of a series, comes the cavalry. After Valerio Evangelisti's Metallo urlante, anyone who delights in biologically modified or consisting of hybrid human machine armies can not do anything but the figure of the amateur. Thank Media Bitch and Netgalley for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

So this is definitely a page-turner. It's filled with action and I was definitely interested in finding out what happened. If you're a fan of Michael Crichton or James Rollins, you will definitely enjoy this. You can definitely see this being made into a movie. There are some annoying characters and some questionable plot devices, but overall, if you like action-packed thrillers, you will probably enjoy this. I will warn you, this ends pretty abruptly. As I read it on my phone and saw myself getting closer and closer to the end, I was wondering how it was going to be resolved... it was just like when I was watching the finale of Twin Peaks and it was the scene where Dale Cooper is in the bathroom (you know the scene I mean) and I hit the pause button to see how much time was left that it could be resolved, only to see :25 left... that feeling when you know that it's not going to be neatly resolved. However, I assume that a sequel to Project Apex will be coming (hopefully sooner than the length of time it took to get the sequel to Twin Peaks), and I will definitely be reading.
When I started this book I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. This novel has something for everyone. The military buffs, the horror junkies, the conspiracy theory nuts, drama lovers, thrill seekers.... The book centers on a handful of characters and each chapter picks up their story a little more but not too much to confuse the reader. It's a fast paced super exciting thrill ride that keeps you wanting more. I cannot wait for the next book. Another fantastic book from Mr. Bray.
I loved this book from start to mind blowing finish...and this is just the first in a trilogy. Characters very well built, lots of research has gone into this because it stretches far and wide into different countries. I don't want to ruin anything and the write up is enough, you just have to read this. Outstanding.
A potentially good story but let down by heavy use of tropes such as fowl-mouthed SAS operatives and southern evangelizing preachers. Worth moving on with the series to see how it's going to turn out, but one would imagine ant-man will discover some fatal flaw allowing a glorious comeback in a later book.
Mind blowing! I don't know where to begin. My hats go off to author Michael Bray and Project Apex. Brilliantly written, this story seems to come alive on it's own. I finished in two days, only because I had to sleep. This book is well worth reading and I would have rated it more than just five stars. I can't wait to find out what happens next. I have to find out...
I would give this book more than five stars if I could, it was a good take on post apocalyptic fiction. I'm not a big fan of this genre but this book was amazing. I have the two books out so far in signed print copies and am proud to own them. I recommend this book to all fan's of modern horror!!!!!!
A virus that heals all. No death. Increase in knowledge. What does one man plan to do once infected? Can he be stopped? Should he be stopped? Read for yourself and decide.
What an unique take on the zombie genre.Lots of action, fast paced, lots blood, slaughter and mayhem.Joshua and his followers are mean, lean killing machines showing no mercy to their victims. A new world order rises. A must read to anyone who loves the zombie/horror genre.
