"All these searchings and hungerings and longings that are in your heart, I tell you they are the drawings of the divine magnet, Jesus Christ."

“God does not ask you to give the perfect surrender in your strength, or by the power of your will; God is willing to work it in you.”
An extraordinary example of this type of literature. Vastly better written than many contemporary exhortations toward Christian living.
“Do not be afraid He will command from you what He will not bestow. He is living in your heart by Hid holy Spirit.”

I started this book three times over the past couple years and finally made it all the way through. I guess I was just ready for it this time. Absolutely amazing and clarifying stuff on sanctification and grace and how God works on/in people.
Murray's point: it's coming to a point of helplessness in ourselves, that empties us for Christ to fill us --- and then true fruit can be born, from his strength, not ours. It's not our trying that sanctifies us or allows us to do "kingdom work", but a sens ...more

Wow! This book is powerful, convicting, and encouraging all at the same time. I am ordering myself a hardcopy so I can highlight and reread easier.
I remember when I came out of the army, came back to Canada and found this book in a used bookstore. I never heard of Murray before...but the title attracted me. I could not put it down. And when I reached the chapter "Kept by the power of God", I cried. Knowing what a failure I am and how much of remaining sin was still in me this book was a breath of fresh air, even though Murray is a bit perfectionistic in some of his teachings. I could not believe that coming and continuing in a relationship

This is the second time I read this book and still amazes me how our Father gifted us eternal life and a new life just by believing in His Son Jesus and giving Him all you can walk and be like Jesus. I really analyzed my life with Jesus sine 10 years ago and I realized that I have to believe more in Him and let Him change me because no matter how much I try to have a holy life I just cannot , that is impossible for us humans but letting and believing in Him and also abiding in Jesus , He can wor

Powerful book and great as long as you realize that God accepts us totally in Christ because of His absolute surrender for us on the cross. Our absolute surrender is the only appropriate response. Also, our surrender to Him is active obedience (Romans 12:1-2) and trust in Him. John Owen's little book "the mortification of sin" would be a good follow up to illustrate that we will always be putting to death the flesh by the power of the Spirit. It's not something you can do in an afternoon, but I

We've all heard the expression, "you have to respect the classics." I first heard it from one of my uncles while driving down the beautiful west coast of California. He was talking about music, but the appeal is obviously broader that just music. All of the arts have classic pieces that deserve respect. And this idea extends even past the realm of art into the realm of taste. What's one of the primary factors that critics say enhances the quality of alcohol? Age, right? The older the better.

Rarely do I come across a book that has such value that it impacts from the first few pages of reading. Absolute Surrender by Andrew Murray is one of those books. The depth and richness of the challenges set forth by Murray are of such caliber that every Christian should read this book and could you benefit from making it a yearly habit.
Murray sets forth the premise that Christians are living life without the power and grace of God because they are not fully surrendered to him; absolutely surren ...more

Workers, take your place every day at the feet of Jesus, in the blessed peace and rest that come from the knowledge—I have no care, my cares are His! I have no fear, He cares for all my fears.
This book is amazing. Seriously. It's been taking my community by storm, and for good reason. Here lies the issue with so many of today's Believers, myself included. We love the Lord, we follow Him (or try to) and we go to church, but we do not succeed as Christians, we fail daily, and our strivings come ...more

I almost think this book's subtitle should be, "How to come into unity with God in Christ." If those words shake you, the idea of coming into true oneness with the Spirit of Christ, His life truly living through you and in you, then this book is for you.
I praise God for how much He has taught me through this little book. It came at an apt time, just as God's Spirit was teaching me about His love and to seek unity in His Spirit. I have found myself praying on many occasions - and may it be my pr ...more

A beautiful book urging Christians to absolutely surrender to God. It's what God desires for your life - for his glory and your good. It's the best thing that can happen to you.
Instead of trying on your own strength to surrender, pray and depend on Christ to give you the power to surrender and love. ...more

There is quite a lot packed into this little book. I highlighted several passages.
"If there is anything holding you back or any sacrifice you are afraid of making, come to God now and prove how gracious your God is."
"When God has begun the work of absolute surrender in you, and when God has accepted your surrender, then God holds Himself bound to care for it and to keep it."
I will probably read it again later. I do think that the author could have used language that would appeal to women as w ...more

I listened to this as an audio book back in the spring but forgot to post it. prayer books aren't my favorite to read so listening was more enjoyable. I have a few other books by Andrew Murray and am exited to read more of them in the future. 3 stars for now however I may have forgotten some of the content within the book and might rate it higher later.

One of the best books I've ever read. Something every Christian needs to understand but is so rarely taught - we can't be what God wants us to be if we're dependent in any way on our own strength.

Although it had some good things to say and offered exhortation about following Christ, this book is getting logged as "A book from a theological viewpoint you disagree with" (Challies' Reading Challenge 2021) because the main doctrine the author is expounding is that being filled with the Holy Spirit happens separately from salvation.

The book was good for what it is: a quasi-devotional. It was certainly readable, though I often felt I was being told a lot without really being told anything. Murray writes with a lot of imagery, which isn't bad in itself, but rather than using the imagery for clarification that's all it was. This made it very hard to ascertain what, if anything, his words really mean. He writes quite poetically, which I think is meant to stir the emotions, but once one comes down from the emotional high and re

Absolute Surrender is a must-read classic for any Christian. Even though this short book was first published in 1895, it really is timeless. Andrew Murray discusses the need for us to surrender ourselves to the will of God and hold nothing back. He does a wonderful character study of Peter, looking at the amazing transformation from the man who denied Jesus 3 times, to the man who would become the rock the church was built on. Mr. Murray really makes the case of the struggling Christian in Roman

“God has a plan for His Church upon earth. But alas! we too often make our plan, and we think that we know what ought to be done. We ask God first to bless our feeble efforts, instead of absolutely refusing to go unless God go before us.”
