Enjoying an ideal life with a loving husband and beautiful daughter, Bonnie Wheeler finds her serenity shattered when her husband's ex-wife is brutally murdered by someone who is also stalking her. Reissue.
Joy Fielding (née Tepperman; born March 18, 1945) is a Canadian novelist and actress. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, she graduated from the University of Toronto in 1966, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. As Joy Tepperman, she had a brief acting career, appearing in the film Winter Kept Us Warm (1965) and in an episode of Gunsmoke. She later changed her last name to Fielding (after Henry Fielding) and began writing novels. Fielding is also the screenwriter of the television film Golden Will: The Silken Laumann Story.
At the age of 8, Joy Tepperman wrote her first story and sent it into a local magazine, and at age 12 sent in her first TV script, however both were rejected. She had a brief acting career, eventually giving it up to write full-time in 1972. She has published to date 22 novels, two of which were converted into film. Fielding's process of having an idea to the point the novel is finished generally takes a year, the writing itself taking four to eight months. Joy Fielding sets most of her novels in American cities such as Boston and Chicago. She has said that she prefers to set her novels in "big American cities, [as the] landscape seems best for [her] themes of urban alienation and loss of identity. Fielding is a Canadian citizen. Her husband's name is Warren, and they have two daughters, Annie and Shannon. They have property in Toronto, Ontario, as well as Palm Beach, Florida.
Fielding had an interview with the Vancouver Sun in 2007, just after her publication of Heartstopper. She enjoys catching readers off guard with the endings of her stories, but insists that "[it] isn't what her fiction is about", but rather more about the development of her characters. Discussing her novels with the Toronto Star in 2008, she said "I might not write fiction in the literary sense. But I write very well. My characters are good. My dialog is good. And my stories are really involving. I'm writing exactly the kind of books I like to write. And they're the kind of books I like to read. They're popular commercial fiction. That's what they are."
Fielding has been noted as a novelist who is more popular in the United States and foreign countries, rather than in her native Canada. For example, the novel Kiss Mommy Goodbye was more popular in the States, and See Jane Run in Germany. In addition, she had an American agent and publisher, although she has now switched to a Canadian publisher.
Now that I've read (and loved!) my second book by Joy Fielding, I can officially declare myself a fan. Whispers and Lies was my first experience with this author and was among my favorite reads of 2009. Although I liked that one a teensy bit more than this one (the difference being that I found Whispers and Lies quite humorous!), I give them both a solid 5 stars. I like Ms. Fielding's writing style and look forward to reading everything else she's written.
At the beginning of Don't Cry Now, Bonnie recieves a call from her husband's ex-wife warning her that she and her little girl are in danger. The ex-wife asks to meet with her, but when Bonnie arrives at the house later that morning, she finds her shot dead in the kitchen. Things get a bit crazy for Bonnie from then on out, and everyone is a suspect. It was suspenseful and kept me guessing right up to the final few pages. A fun read!
Let me tell you: I thought I realized who is the murderer in the first chapter. I. Did. Not. Realize. Anything. OKAY??
What a plot twist. Literally I can't believe.
I loved everything about this book, except the thing that the author keeps reminding us that the main character "doesn't know what she's doing". Yes, we get that we would be confused too if someone starts killing people around us.
Joy Fielding once again proved why is she my favorite thriller author.
Bonnie Wheeler is married to Rod Wheeler; they have a daughter, Amanda, and Rod has two children with his previous wife, Joan. Bonnie enjoys her life until the day Joan calls to ask Bonnie to meet her. She wants to give Bonnie information indicating that her life and Amanda's life are in danger. Bonnie agrees to meet Joan, but when she arrives at the meeting place, she discovers Joan is dead -- shot through the heart.
As the story develops, Bonnie becomes more deeply involved in trying to figure out who killed Joan as well as what Joan could have meant when she indicated Bonnie's life and that of her child are in danger. This is where Joy Fielding is usually at her best with twists and turns to complicate her mysteries with enough intrigue to keep those pages turning almost all by themselves. Unfortunately, she didn't hit her usual mark of suspense with Don't Cry Now.
What disrupts the story is Bonnie's preoccupation with her own demons from her childhood. That coupled with Bonnie's somewhat bizarre behavior at times, no matter how reasonably Fielding explains it all, leaves the character of Bonnie Wheeler a little short on credibility.
I wouldn't recommend Don't Cry Now to someone who'd never read Joy Fielding before, because this book does not give a good first impression of what she's capable of writing. But to fans of hers, like me, this book still holds that Fielding "charm". Whenever I finish a book by Joy Fielding, I'm sad to see the characters go, and I usually wish there were a sequel so that I could connect with them again. That's how I felt about Bonnie Wheeler; it's just that if there were a sequel, I'd hope Bonnie had it a little more together than she did this time around.
What should I say? I didn't like it. I absolutly don't like the main person , Bonnie. It just give ★★ because the end was a bit more thrilling. But all the rest wasn't good written. I read it in German, so maybe the translation was ill but it doesn't change my feelings.
To the story: Bonnie gets a call from the devored wife of her husband. She went to the meeting place and well Joan was dead. Who is the killer and why is Bonnie and her daughter Amanda in danger?
The book was not as good as the first book that I read from Joy Fielding, but it was definetly enjoyable. Started out too quick in my opinion, it felt kind of dry, but with every page I connected with the book a little bit more. 4 stars from the beginning, 4 stars in the end. The ending was definetly unexpected, kind of felt like a mindf**k throughout the whole book. The ending satisfied me though, I got the answers to every one of my questions that I created while reading the book.
I listened to the audiobook. I have listened to this audiobook off and on since I was a kid and went on a roadtrip with my grandparents and it was my favorite. My grandma even gave me the cassette tapes! I’ve also loved listening to her reading it and love the characters and twists. It’s probably one of my all time favorites!
Normally I am a huge Joy Fielding fan. I've read at least half a dozen of her novels, but Don't Cry Now is my least favorite and difficult to finish. I had to force myself when others may have simply put the book down and moved on. Bonnie, the main character, receives a cryptic phone call from her husband's ex-wife telling her that she and her four-year old daughter Amanda are in danger. When Bonnie reluctanly agrees to meet her to learn more, Bonnie finds her dead, a single bullet through the chest. Bonnie becomes a person of interest. This was fine for me, but it quickly falls apart after that. All the side characters are not-likable. Soon Bonnie becomes sick, but because of childhood issues, is in denial about being sick. This was annoying. Much of the book she is in bed. Her husband goes out of town for a week and Bonnie is too nice to ask him to stay (and take care of the kids from his first marraige that now have to live with them because their mother id dead) or come home early because she is sick. And when the killer is revealed, it is not satisfying at all. And the red-hearing is not explained, just an obvious plant. However, I will still read future Joy Fielding novels. I'm still a fan.
This was the first Joy Fielding novel I read, it was my first year of high school and I ran out of time to pick a book from the school library because I was too busy chatting. I grabbed the first one I could reach while the class was leaving and I have been addicted to joys writing ever since. She made me remember why I loved reading all over again.
Joy Fielding doesn't disappoint! Another great read. Bravo! As with most of Joy Fielding's novels, there are a lot of twists and turns. Guessing who "done it", came pretty quick for me, but I didn't mind because the storyline kept me interested and there was an off chance that I could've been wrong. The main character Bonnie is someone who is not everyone's cup of tea but I liked her just fine.
Joy Fielding is my favorite author. I Read this book first and thought it was great. A good suspense-thriller author, I have read all of her novels now.
