The Blink That Killed the Eye

Rate this book
The Blink That Killed the Eye is a stunningly crafted debut short story collection, taking a poetic torch to the shadows of daily life - illuminating the characters, situations, emotions and dilemmas that pour into even the most ordinary existences. From building sites to prison cells; from the birth of love to the last moments of breath - Anthony Anaxagorou navigates expertly through the tangled nets of invisibility, desperation and power to bring us time-defining tales of tragedy and hope; commenting on the irony of our shrinking capacity to really see ourselves or each other in a world increasingly defined by appearances and dangerous preconceptions.

Loosely interlinked short stories, some of them very moving and raw, others much more carefully controlled. Illuminating the everyday with the light of the universal. Language that is often poetic, never over-the-top, and brutally honest.

the prose was lyrical and gorgeous. I loved reading these stories, as they all melded in with one another.

From the title, this short story collection draws intrigue. As with some other reviews, this book is definitely more along the 4.5 than 4 rating.

Anthony Anaxagorou has an awe-worthy grasp on words. He often strings them together effortlessly with storytelling that paints vivid pictures and deep descriptions that stretch the imagination. In events that may otherwise seem trivial, his method of breaking down each characters story, their thoughts, the significance of even the smaller things does make this captivating. Though at times I find the loosely linked connections between the short stories can be confusing, it is an added layer of depth to the fascinating elements of his writing style.

If you appreciate short stories, this is definitely a recommended read.

Sometimes interlinked short stories set in a very real, and concrete world. The minor (and major) dramas of life laid bare by this accomplished poet.
