Rate this book
I-Day is near at hand, and soon the Fangborn will reveal themselves to humankind. As a member of this secretive race of werewolves, vampires, and oracles, will archaeologist Zoe Miller be prepared?

Still grappling with the newfound powers she gained after opening Pandora’s box, Zoe shares the responsibility of protecting “Normal” humans. Having long preferred to keep to the shadows, she knows the pending revelation of the Fangborn will set the world on fire. With Fangborn enemies in the Order of Nicomedia forcing their hand, Zoe and her supernatural Family have no choice but to step into the spotlight. But that decision has garnered the attention of the powerful and otherworldly beings known as the Makers. They claim to have created the Fangborn—not as saviors, but as predators. And it seems they have their own plans for Zoe…and for the fate of all the Fangborn.

Filled with stunning twists, Hellbender takes the Fangborn series to a thrilling new dimension.

[From the author's own website]

I was born and raised in New England and I live in Massachusetts now, with my husband and benevolent feline overlords. Mine is a quiet, fairly ordinary life. I love that because it's what saves me from an overdeveloped sense of paranoia and a tendency to expect the worst. Combined with an eye for detail and a quirky take on life, these traits give me a vivid internal life, one that's sometimes a little nerve-wracking, but very useful for writing mystery and suspense.

My interest in archaeology stems from childhood, where my interest in books and the opportunities I had to travel made me begin to think about cultural differences. The thing I like best about this work is that it is a real opportunity to try and resurrect individuals from the monolith of history. I've worked on prehistoric and historical sites in the U.S. and in Europe, and like to teach, in the field, in museums, in the classroom, and through writing.

In my first book, Site Unseen, my protagonist Emma Fielding discovers that archaeologists are trained to ask the same questions that detectives ask: who, what, where, when, how, and why. When I started on these books, I realized that archaeology is also good training for writing because research, logic, and persistence are so important to both endeavors.

Naturally, that training worked with the archaeology mysteries--and it also helped with my first short story, "The Lords of Misrule," a historical mystery which appeared in the anthology, Sugarplums and Scandal. But how has it worked when I've tackled subjects as seemingly diverse as werewolves ("The Night Things Changed" in Wolfsbane and Mistletoe and "Swing Shift" in Crimes By Moonlight) and noir ("Femme Sole," in Boston Noir)? Easy: it's all about getting into someone else's shoes and walking around for a while. Preferably, getting into (fictional) trouble while you do it. Asking "what if?" and thinking about how culture and subcultures--in addition to personality--shape behavior.

This book brings about more changes for Zoe, big changes that change her place with in the Fangborn. Zoe does a great job of adjusting to those changes, even to those that want to subvert her. I liked watching Zoe beat those after her and build a team that supports her. I did find it interesting how Zoe built the team in her mind. Part of me thinks she's super crazy for that, but with all the happenings in this world they could very well be real. I can't wait to find out how I-day went and what is ahead for Zoe.

*My Thoughts*

Hellbender is the THIRD installment in the Fangborn series by Dana Cameron. The series features archaeologist, and Fangborn werewolf Zoe Miller who was raised as a human, but recently found out that she's actually one of those who have been fighting evil in secret for generations. Zoe has literally opened Pandora's box searching for powerful Fangborn artifacts, and come away as one of the most powerful individuals in the world. But, with great power, comes greater responsibilities, and a huge target on her head.

I have been having a hellish month! This world has helped taken me away from it! If I could I would give ten stars I would. . I will be very impatiently waiting on the next book. Not only has this book hooked me even more into this world but leaves me craving more and more! The growth of Zoe is huge! I hope this author continues to write as beautifully as she has in this last book.

Science, or more accurately, the sciences, try to neatly box up the area in which each group specializes. Fantasy is a messy agglomerate of many of those same concepts. If you read on Kindle, avail yourself of the built-in dictionary and find out what science says about a hellbender (yes, hellbender is a real thing). Dana Cameron knows that science and fantasy are but two sides of the same coin. Both science and fantasy require imagination and a willingness to tread upon unknown territory. The original "Star Trek" series was the official TV show of NASA back in the 60s… reflect on that in light of today's technology.

The Fangborn series explores a world that is both very familiar and extremely strange. There are literally worlds within worlds to explore. You will also find some very cool Easter eggs to pique your inner geek. This makes for a very contemporary and meaningful read. Dana Cameron has managed to defy tradition by giving her tropes a brand new lease on life. How do YOU think of werewolves? How do YOU think of vampires? No same old, same old here.

In the series, and perhaps even more so in HELLBENDER, the burning issues of the day seethe very close to the surface. You're different! You don't think, or act, like I do. You are 'other.' Anyone who is comfortable in their own skin feels how wrong those statements are. When you come to grips with who you are, everything else seems to fall into place. Zoe Miller, a truly strong female protagonist, has made her journey into self-awareness able to face whatever is thrown at her. I must confess, I like Zoe Miller. I would be proud to call her my friend.

Each book in the series can technically stand on its own. However, you would be doing yourself a grave disservice if you didn't start with the first book and read all three. I guess I could be happy if the story ended here, but there is so much more about the Fangborn that I want to know. Lucky for me, I checked, and there are three Fangborn stories that are calling my name.

Barely better than the other two books

Yes, the last book in the series is an improvement from the first two books; however, it's just not enough. I understand that Zoe's character arc was supposed to reflect the amount of growth she had gone through and her really coming into her own as the head of the transition to this new world but it's just not believable. All of the metaphysical, existential, and philosophical blathering came off as filler to try to make sense of a convoluted and unwieldy plot. Quite frankly, a lot of it was unnecessary and just bogged the storyline down. Zoe is still an unrelatable and unsympathetic main character, in my honest opinion.

Not Negative Review

I really like this book, but it was a lot of metaphysical and philosophical talk and not enough action if you are looking for urban fantasy. I needed a little more meat, instead of seeing everything via omnipotent Zoe’s mindspace lab. I actually like the book, but if you are wanting an action pack book be prepared of a lot of talk with some action mixed in.

A conclusion to a series that had potential but wasn't a winner for me. That being said this was Cameron's first trilogy, there were a lot of good ideas. So I am open to reading future works.

Hellbender

Zoe's adventures final come to an end and she saves the fangborn. I wanted a little bit more from her and Adam. Not sure if we get a bit more in the novella. Sad for this story to end.

My reviews often start with pertinent quotes, and Seven Kinds of Hell was no different.

You see what we do to each other over the slightest differences in religion or politics? We beat each other up over baseball games. We’ll kill over the wrong-colored bandana. What would we do faced with the Fangborn? – Adam Nichols, Seven Kinds of Hell

This one quote, more than any other, describes the heart of Dana Cameron’s Fangborn Series. Of course, many Urban Fantasy series address the question of the introduction of hidden beings, whether they be were, vampire, ghoul, or all the other “other” beings of the mythological pantheons. Ms. Cameron addresses the issue in her series – but more than that, especially in this third edition, Hellbender, she goes beyond simply the ‘introduction’ of the mythological to the Normals, but also the whole concept of how reality is designed.

“You’d said you’d been studying . . . the physics of Fangborn abilities?”

“Yeah. Bit o’ this, bit o’ that. Whether how the Change transformation the vampires and werewolves can do is a quantum entanglement of some kind . . . Spooky action at a distance, you know?”

Blood and agony. Fear and death. Zoe never asked for, never wanted, to be a monster, a savior, a weapon beyond comprehension. But she is – and as IDay – Identification Day, the day the Fangborn “come out” comes closer and closer, as those who wish the Fangborn nothing but death gather their forces, danger now comes from an even more deadly direction, as The Makers join the fray. The Makers – beings so advanced they stretch the boundaries of times and space. Did they really create the Fangborn? And for what purpose? To protect the humans, as the Fangborn have always believed and worked towards? Or to destroy them?

Hellborn is, literally, amazing. The story has developed over the last two books with intelligence, exceptional writing, and creative character and world development to match any UF out there today. Yes, even my beloved Kate Daniels series.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own, and this series is well worth your time! Is Hellbender the last in the series? Well, I looked on Dana’s site and didn’t see anything, and it did wrap in such a way that it could be the last – but I certainly hope it isn’t!!

Hot damn! Love this series, love the narrator for this series. Please, people at 47North, give this writer a nice fat contract. I want more. I want to increase your revenue by buying more books about Zoe.

Do not make me gnash my teeth and shake my fist at you.

By binge reading all three in a row, I appreciated the subtle but meaningful change in Zoe's perception of the people around her, of the Makers, and the evolution of the dragons both as concept and characters.

Flat characters? Not to me. The audiobook director and narrator helped me appreciate that Vee, Danny, and Toshi have all been changing off stage. I have no problem believing that several novellas could be filled with the story of their own chaotic road to I-Day.

Similarly, in terms of plot development across the books, I like that Claudia and Gerry haven't changed, really: they came off as goody two-shoes when we first met them in Seven Kinds of Hell, yet their brand of idealism meant that they were loyal to Zoe in A Pack of Strays. This time, they tether points of transition in the narrative when Zoe needs to reconnect from Japan, or needs an efficient mid-battle update on what's what.

The novel is go, go, go without a lot of time in Japan or Alaska, the first two artifact runs this time around, yet both locations are home to role models for Zoe, maybe something to absorb when she catches a break and can devote some time to the mind lab, and her feelings. That's got to happen: action-packed is all to the good with an imminent turning point in the overall narrative, and I hope it doesn't turn out to be the grand finale of a fireworks display with us all heading home. The next book could be... different.

Thank you, Dana Cameron, for not going schmaltzando on the emotion. It is intense, and calibrated to the personality of the first-person narrator. Love that and love her accent, Kate Rudd. I hope you'll be narrating more action-packed Fangborn novels soon.

This is the third book in the Fangborn series by Dana Cameron, and I was a bit surprised when I saw it being available. I thought it might be a longer time period to get it out, by I am definitely not complaining! I started reading it as soon as I had a chance. The story pretty much takes off from the end of the second book, with Zoe finding out another new mystery power. From that point, as I got further into the story, my expectations gradually decreased.

The existing struggle between Fangborn and the Order, and bringing the knowledge of the Fangborn to public knowledge, was to be expected. I enjoyed the results of the novel in the conflicts between these two groups. Zoe is a obviously still trying to understand how her artifacts work, and what powers they provide, or with most of them, what they may provide and how to access that power. More artifacts are gained in this telling.

What I didn't care for, was the way I felt while reading, that things were sort of 'crammed' into this book to bring everything to a finish. It seemed some parts were glossed over (details about the Celtic sword - aside from how it was used at the end, finding out about her father, I-Day coming about). I received the impression that this may be a third and final book in this particular part of the Fangborn world, though, there is much that another book (or more) would be open to explaining in more detail (Zoe's powers - how they come about, possible searching for more artifacts, etc.). Overall I was a bit let-down about the 'rush to the finish' feeling I had while reading it, but still a great story. I would definitely be interested in reading more in this series, or even possibly other tales from the Fangborn world.

I received a Kindle version ARC from the publisher, 47North, through Netgalley.com.

Set in Boston, MA, Zoe Miller (werewolf, Zoe Hellbender, Fangborn, archaeologist) was subjected to tests from the governments secret agency; Theodore Roundtree group (TRG).
Lots of PPL left the group & started the Order of Nicomedia (secret society; werewolves, vampires, oracles).

Dr. Sebastian Porter is the chief scientist.
Toshiharu Yamazaki-Campbell (cousin) was sent to eliminate Dr. Sebastian Porter.

I-Day preparations were making great progress.
The Battle of Boston had come/gone. Quarrel (dragon, former vampire), Naserian, & Yuan had been a big part of that.
How are Carolina Perez-Smith (billionaire) & Senator Edward Knight helping the Cause?

What about Representative Adam Nichols?

What’s in Pandora’s box?
& then there is Zoe Miller is she a born leader?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written cultural urban fantasy book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great foreign urban fantasy movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. Not something I normally read but I liked it. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Goodreads; 47North; paperback book

Hellbender is like an action movie but in book form, fast-paced and full of intense action, battles, and explosions galore. There is little time invested in plot or character development, but that doesn't make Hellbender any less fun to read.

Zoe is "Powerful" beyond her understanding. She is the only person who can prevent the Order from revealing the existence of the Fangborn, and stop them from starting a war. At the same time, she is the only person who can communicate with the Makers, the creators of the original Fangborn. Zoe can teleport, stop time, and cause explosions simply by pointing her finger, not to mention turn into a wolf. She is an action hero with a capital H. Of course having tons of power doesn't stop her from being caught by the bad guys, an essential part of any action story. After all, the head of the secretive Order has to gloat and reveal their plans for world domination.

Needless to say, Zoe saves the day, defeats big bad, and sends a strong message to the Makers, all by means of her ever expanding collection of artifacts and powers.

Hellbender is a fun and easy read, light on substance, but heavy on explosions. While it won't win any awards, the book is a pleasant way to pass time in a waiting room or on a plane.

I received a copy of Hellbender from the publisher and Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

This series is so awesome!

The last book ended on quite a cliffhanger, so I was thrilled when I got my trotters on an early copy of Hellbender for review.

The story continues where Pack of Strays left off and soon Zoe is in the middle of action and danger again. She has quite a lot on her plate this time: The Makers are contacting Zoe, forcing her to make decisions she might not be ready for.

I love how Zoe stays so down to earth and caring, even with all the power that is thrown her way. She keeps trying to do what she thinks is right. She manages to gather people (and creatures) around her who help her stay strong and on course.

The romance in this book is mostly on a back burner - there's so much going on in Zoe's life, it would be a surprise if she managed to fit in a passionate affair - but there are still some scenes between Zoe and her two love interests. I can tell you I'm still hoping that Zoe will find happiness with Adam.

The events and action in this book feel epic and world changing. Often I lose my interest when stories take the DOOM! route, but Cameron manages to make me believe in the unfolding events, and care. I was rooting for Zoe and her allies to survive and safe the day.

And the ending: Argh! I need the next book! I want to know what's next.

You can bet I'll be stalking Dana Cameron's website for news on the next book. In the mean time I'll be giving her Emma Fielding series a try.

Fangborn are ready to show themselves to the Normals before the Order of Nicomedia does it for them, and Zoe Miller is leading the way. First, she has to find more artifacts to enrich her power, defeat the Order, and deal with the mysterious Makers. Will Zoe lead the vampires, werewolves, and oracles into I-Day the way they want to do it, or will the Order do it for them? What do the Makers really want? And who is leading the Order? Zoe has a lot on her plate, but is up to the challenge.

Zoe Miller is back in the third installment of the Fangborn series. As in the other two books, she is on the lookout for other artifacts, still with no clue how to handle the power she has now. Her friends are there to support her, as well as some former enemies. Battles are jam-packed in this book, making it a quick, fast, enjoyable read. I must point out that this book felt rushed in parts, but nothing that you realize until it’s over. In addition, I still can’t quite feel the romance between Zoe and either Will or Adam. However, even with very little character development, it’s still a great book and I recommend this series to urban fantasy lovers.

I received a free copy from First Reads/NetGalley.

This is a fast-moving urban fantasy/sci-fi that is best read in order. The loose plots from the previous novels are wrapped up and the reader gets more information on how magic works, the Fangborn and the mythological artifacts that Zoe has been acquiring. I love the species in this book; werewolves, vampires, oracles, witches, dragons, masters and of course humans that are both good and bad. Zoe has struggled with the unexpected powers that she has gained and is still struggling at times. In this aspect, I think the author need to look at her character and stop being inconsistent; one minute she’s calm and knows what she is doing and in the next she doesn’t, this is one of the reasons that I cannot rate this book higher. Since this is a continuing series it would be nice if the author provided an “Up until now section” that tells the readers what has occurred in previous books. With the delay between releases this is something that would help refresh the readers’ memory. Peter V Brett has done this with his Demon Cycle series and I find it really helpful.

3.25/5 STARS: **I want to thank the author and/or the publisher for providing a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine

In Dana Cameron’s Fangborn Series, the Fangborn are among us – vampires, werewolves, and oracles alike. Their goal, as it has always been, is to rid the world of evil. It is not just a desire – it is a compulsion that they are powerless to ignore. Their collective hand has been forced, and they are about to reveal themselves to the public, but the welcome may not be a friendly one. In “Hellbender”, book three in the series, Archeologist Zoe Miller has become the leader of the Fangborn Family, even though she was once known as a “stray”. But with her powers growing, and new ones emerging since she opened Pandora’s Box, she reluctantly ends up making decisions that will affect them all.

Zoe has grown quite a bit within the three books, though not in ways she (and those around her) might always be comfortable. The action is fast and furious in this book, maybe a bit over the top, but none of it is just for the sake of explosions. As the build-up to I-Day continues, and the potential fallout, I look forward to book 4 and to continuing the ride!

Zoe Miller and her fellow Fangborn are battling the nefarious Order at the end of book 2. Trying to gain an advantage, she attempts to slow time. Unfortunately, she accidentally transports herself (and her arch enemy, Jacob Buell) to Japan instead. Exhausted and frantically worried about her friends, Zoe must deal with Buell and find her way back home. She quickly finds that this detour was not random. It leads her to a large trove of new weapons for her magical arsenal and provides some insight to her past.

This book helps the reader to understand what motivates the dragons and the mysterious Makers introduced previously. Zoe must stand up to these powerful entities if she is to fulfil her destiny and unchain the Fangborn.

Like the previous two books, the writing style is a bit choppy. The only character with any depth is Zoe. The rest are simply drawn. I can understand this for the characters in Zoe's head, but it would have been nice to see some development of the "real" people (Will, Adam, etc). Overall, the story was readable and picked up pace in the second half.

I received this book for free in return for an honest review.

This is the first book by Dana Cameron that I have read, also the first I have read in the series obviously. There is a LOT of information that comes out in this book and my head was spinning a few times with the info dumps and what Zoe learns as the story goes on. I am going to have to go back and read 1 & 2 in the series so that all of the relationship drama makes more sense to me. Jumping in at book 3 hasn't been a major issue in regards to the story or characters, there is just enough recapping to know what happened in the first two books, but because I haven't read them I feel like I missed the emotional impact the events had on Zoe.

It is an interesting world that Dana Cameron has created and I am excited to see where she takes it, although I can't tell if this is the last in the series or not.

Zoe Miller, Fangborn, werewolf with a little oracle and vampire mixed in, is the hope and future of her species...and maybe even humanity. She's acquiring new powers all the time and trying to make sense of them while communicating with the Makers on behalf of humanity and fighting the Fellborn.

Packed with action, this novel is sure to delight. I hadn't read any others in the series but I will definitely be looking for books 1 and 2. Zoe is a character we can all identify with as she struggles to keep from being overwhelmed and fights her way from dangerous situations. This book has quick pacing and believable characters. The story is a wonderful mix of fantasy and sci-fi. It seems well-researched and is filled with beautiful locations.
