I grabbed this book from NetGalley because I follow Michael Thompson on Substack and was intrigued by the things he posts.

It turns out Michael is really shy and has a stutter. Despite this, he decided to get a job in sales. That fact alone says a lot about him. I respect that move a lot.

This book outlines his journey from shy guy to author and coach and the ways he found his footing along the way.

The book it sprinkled with memorable tidbits and quotes that I had to write down so I could remember them.

It’s an inspiring tail of an honest and authentic guy who lays it out all on his sleeve.

The title of the book I found somewhat deceiving because as I was reading the book it seemed like a lot of the principles, if implemented, would pull you out of what I would describe as being shy and more into an extroverted persona.

I feel the book could have called out more specifically how the authors shyness gave him advantages in specific scenarios compared to other personality types.

I discovered Michael Thompson a few years ago on Medium. I love his writing style and his capacity to present ideas in such a beautiful way. Shy by Design is one of the best books I've read in 2024. A principle that resonates so much today is presented on page 6 when he wrote, "lead with care instead of worrying about demonstrating bullet-proof confidence."

I'll be giving copies of this book to my employees and partners. It's definitely worth a read.

I learned to read books in one sitting. I like to devour them whole...as a way of immersing myself in a different world for a bit. I usually read books like I eat a Hersey's chocolate bar. All at once.

AND

every once in a rare while, I find a book like this one, that I have to enjoy in tiny bites over time. It's just too good to miss a single word. I read a bit, and I have to read it again, and again because I feel like there was so much there that I missed something...and when I re-read, I realize I did miss something. The depth in all the stories, the character in all the wisdom, it's layered with so many flavors. I am only halfway through, and I"m already going back to previous parts to re-taste...so I know that this is one I will be starting over again as soon as I'm finished.

I am reading this book the same way I eat high quality dark chocolate. A tiny bite at a time, with absolutely no distractions, where I can let every sound and syllable melt on my tongue and absorb into my being. It's more than memorizing, it's about letting the insights melt into me so that I can truly embody it all.

As I read, it feels like I'm listening to a best friend who has known me my whole life, and he is giving me a gift that he has spent a lifetime collecting pieces from all over the world for me.

As an introvert who hid in corners and was bullied for my weirdness my entire childhood, I can relate to every one of Michael’s stories in his book. I found myself writing notes of my own stories in the margins, and then underlining and highlighting every tip, trick, tool, and hack he suggested.

This book is the manual for shy-weird-awkward-introverts that I wished I’d had through all of the challenging times of my life.

It reminds me not only that I’m valid, but that my weirdness is magick and that my stories and my wisdom matters to the world. And the way I deliver that magick is through quiet 1-1 relationship and rapport.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. I just finished my first-read-through, and turned from the last page right back to page one to start it again.

I've been reading Michael's articles and newsletter for years due to his ability to tell personal stories and pull out actionable insights to advance in our careers that don't feel overwhelming. Shy by Design did not disappoint in the least. The chapter alone on being bold in the moments that matter is worth buying it for. It's not often I'm moved to tears one minute and laughter the next when reading a self-help book and whether you're shy or not, buy the book. It's a masterclass on how to build your tribe while reaching your goals on your own terms.

Along with a fresh portion of patatas bravas, the waiter slid a memory across the table.

"I've been coming here for 10 years," Mike said, "and when I recently asked this server how he stays so cheerful all the time, he just said: 'There is no reason to be angry.'"

That was the day I met Mike Thompson. Walking through Barcelona with a water bottle in his hand, introducing me to the sights and people, and constantly but casually making conversation along the way.

This may be the only Michael I know, but a decade ago, the guy making small talk with the waiter in his favorite bar didn't exist.

Michael grew up not just as an introvert, but as an introvert with a stutter. Queue the bullying, ridicule, and awkward homework presentations. Today, Mike is a successful communication coach, MBA lecturer, and father of two young boys.

The difference between these two men comes down to, yes, years of inner work, but also to the courage to take a sales job, getting over himself, and learning to stand out as a quiet person in a loud world.

In Shy by Design, Mike will tell you the whole story. Better yet, he'll do it while spotlighting the people who've helped him along the way—and teaching you how you, too, can become a great communicator without merely turning up your volume.

Mike's book is a wonderful mix of honest biography, fascinating stories, and grounded, thoughtful advice. The 12 principles are grouped into 3 categories, and each chapter starts with a story.

From conversation starters and mindsets to follow-up templates to simple reminders to be courageous when it counts, you'll find everything you need here to leave lasting impressions and form meaningful connections with the people you meet.

Plus, as you might expect from a guy who prefers sitting in his favorite patatas bravas bar to giving a TED talk, Mike never comes across as preachy, a wise-ass, or condescending.

Having both been friends with the author for years and helped a little on this book, I might be a tad biased, but regardless, Shy by Design is a strong contender for becoming my all-time favorite book about communication.

Whether you're an introvert or simply a quiet person who wants to thrive in a world focused on extroverts and making noise, don’t miss this book.

An encouraging and motivating read from Michael!

I loved this book. I’m a big introvert but know I need people in my life in order to feel connected and happy. This book delivers so many amazing tips - many of which I’d never come across - that make the idea of meeting new people and keeping in touch with current connections way more attractive. I appreciate Michael for taking the time to write this.

Shy by Design is a book that I can confidently say will boost personal confidence, because it gives you the tools and perspectives you need to stand out…But not stand out in an attention grabbing, flashy, way that makes most people feel uncomfortable.

What I love most is the simple accessibility and kindness that shines throughout the book.

It’s worth the read.

This wasn't the book for me. It had some interesting points, but I was looking for more that could carry over to everyday life.
It seemed way more focused on business interactions. If that's what you are interested in, you should read it.

Thompson describes his main values as curiosity and kindness and these both shine through in this book.

Filled with encouragement and wisdom for emerging leaders, creators, business people, or anyone hoping to grow their confidence and create better connections.

Some of my favourite quotes:

"Life's about choosing to be intellectually alive."

"It's impossible to lead a boring life if you view human beings as endlessly fascinating."

"Life isn't about being the smartest person in the room. Nor is it about being the fastest, the strongest, or making enough money to fly to the moon."
