I have reviewed each of these books separately, but here is my thoughts on the entire series...
It is a decidedly Christian series, which I appreciate. The Gospel message is presented in every single book. Sometimes, the Christian lessons the characters learned seemed slightly shallow, but then it is a children's series. It was a little strange how the characters could sense danger, but I didn't find a huge deal was made out of it.
I haven't researched much of the Vikings, but there seemed to have been a lot of research put into this book, and I find that Johnson so tastefully slips in information on lifestyle in that era.
I have now read all of Lois Walfrid Johnson's series. At first, I thought I might not like this one as much as I hoped, but... I think I got hooked. I may even like it better than her other two series for two reasons: less boy/girl stuff and more believable situations for the characters' ages. I borrowed this series and am now thinking that I'll probably get the set for myself some day.
There were some things that, since I'm a writer, didn't slip my notice, such as unfinished threads, tense confusion, and repetitiveness. But, maybe it's because Johnson was my childhood favorite author, these things could easily be forgotten and I just enjoyed the series. :)
Fun, clean, and faith filled. :) Though written for a younger audience than me, I still very much enjoyed this series, and read it quickly. There was lots of fun adventure, and I had so much fun with it being set in Ireland, and beyond.
I am one of those people that finds it hard to reread books, but for these I have made an exception. This series is really, really good, and only gets better with each book. That's rare. Usually the first book in a series is good, and anything after that falls a little short. Not so with these! I recommend them to anyone that enjoys historical fiction!
My 7 year old pulled the first of these off the shelf and started reading it, and so I paged through them again for nostalgia's sake--and remembered just how much I loved this series and how much it positively shaped my pre-teen spirituality and imagination.
I caught more weaknesses in the writing than I had as a kid (some of it more stylistic/subjective, but also all the reviewing of things that had happened earlier, even in the same book, as well as places characters could have been stronger), but still love the books, and find them great to give to kids to read, not just as filler books because they're reading everything in sight, but as actually good books.
I loved these when I was in grade school! Read the whole series multiple times. As I remember, there was great character depth and development, an engaging and educational story line (as it is set during a time and place in history I would otherwise not know much about), and also a Godly, Christian focus. The series was a wholesome, good read.
I was captivated by these books! The perfect simple read that I am sure the children at school will love. I have never read anything about the Vikings and it makes me want to read more. Bree is a strong, adventurous girl. Her journey with God was inspiring. Have these ordered for the library.
Historical fiction is always interesting to me. I was really into this series I borrow from my friend, and I loved each book down to the last sentence. The themes of each book blended and flowed into each other well, and the underlying question of if Bree will ever get home was always making me tense. And I absolutely loved the little bit of romance at the end... not gonna say anymore or else I'll give it away.
I am next to incapable of putting these down! Her writing style is enrapturing and compels you to continue.
Full of action and suspense, Lois Walfrid Johnson's Viking Quest will capture the imagination of young and old alike. The series begins with siblings Briana (Bree) and Devin O'Toole, children of an Irish chieftain. After their sister, Keely was stolen away years before, Devin and Bree have always been told to beware the dreaded Vikings. But even with the warning to always be on their guard, Bree mistakes the identity of a drowning stranger for her friend Tully. When she proves to be mistaken, her worst fears are realized. Bree has rescued a Viking scout, Mikkel a young Viking captain! When Mikkel later raids the area, Bree and Devin are captured and find themselves on their way to Norway as Viking slaves.
Will Bree and Devin ever see their family again? Will Devin let his hatred and bitterness towards Mikkel take over him and ruin his faith? Will they find Keely? Will Bree come to understand the meaning of forgiveness? And will Mikkel find release from the slavery of greed, finding true freedom in Christ?
This series is one of my absolute favorite book series! The characters each have their own journies of faith, doubt, and forgiveness. She did such an amazing job of making them historically and culturally accurate. My absolute favorite characters are Mikkal and Bree! Their journey of hate and disdain, to tolerance, to friendship, and finally to love and adoration for each other. Even though I'm no longer in the age range of preteen they still are my very favorite books that I have read through at least 4 times each.

I must say this is one of the best historical fiction series I have ever read. These pages hold amazing properties. I felt the emotion that the main character, Bree, did. I wept over the unfairness of their circumstances, and was able to imagine the anger Bree felt toward God, even though he had a huge plan for her. If you've been searching for gripping historical fiction from a Christian perspective, then you've found the right books.
This is a beautifully woven story, where you get caught up in the characters and the plot, and you never want to leave. It leaves you aching for more after the last book. This series is definitely a must read.
This series was sooo good! It's hard to find fiction books for teens that bring honor and glory to God. I loved following Bree, Devin, and Mikkel around and being a part of their struggles and joys as they discovered new lands on Mikkel's Viking ship. I would recommend this series to everyone!
This is my FAVORITE series. I love it. There's an innocent love story and Christian faith. Bree was a great character and develops throughout the books. Mikkel has lots of problems but once he becomes Christian, he handles them way better. Devin is a great character. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
