“There aren’t any good books left,” I told my librarian in fifth grade. “I’ve read them all.”
“Well, then, you’ll just have to write some,” she replied.
And I said, “Okay.”
So that’s how I became a writer.
Of course, it wasn’t really that easy. As a kid, I wrote pages and pages of messy, badly spelled, hilariously awful stories. When I was homeschooled for jr. high, I did the same, only I typed most of them, so the spelling improved.
In high school, I wrote longer things. Book-length things. I was never sure what to call them, since none of them were really books. Not yet. And a few were still mildly awful. But I felt like God had given me a gift, and I was determined to use it.
By the time I went to Taylor University to study writing, I had written several book-length things, including a fantasy youth novel that my twin sister Erika wanted as her birthday present. Along the way, I had learned what to do and what not to, so I decided to try sending one in to a publisher.
They liked it. Who knew? So, I got my first book contract at age eighteen, for Quest for the Scorpion’s Jewel. That’s the beginning of (a very, very short version of) my story. I’m still turning pages, but God’s the one doing the writing, and I know He’s got a great ending in mind.

Thanks to Netgalley and Warner Press for giving me this book to review.

Jesse, Silas and Rae are returning from their failed mission to get the Scorpion Jewel and are on their way to recover Pavel whom they left to recuperate from his injuries. They are still reeling from the revelation that the youth guard are put together and deliberately made to fail, by the king to remove the brightest and bravest young people from the country to stop them plotting to overthrow the king.

Escape from Riddler’s Pass is ok, however is a bit preachy, and tries to convert you to Christianity. This gets annoying after a while, however, if you ignore this it is as good as Quest for Scorpions Jewel. The pacing is quite good, however neither book seems to have a full ending, with most of the questions raised not being answered.

Jesse and Rae have not significantly changed since Quest for Scorpions Jewel, however we see a change in Silas as he goes to confront those who killed his father, and we get to see more of Pavel. Pavel comes across as very Christian, and is trying to convert everybody, including the reader.

I felt Escape from Riddle’s Pass was ok, and would recommend it to people who liked Quest for Scorpions Jewel.

Rae, Silas and Jesse return to Mir without the Serpent's Jewel, but they do have the knowledge that the king not only set them up for failure but sent Demetri a former Youth Guard and presently Captain of the patrol Guard to kill them all. Jesse and the others have rushed to Mir to save Pavel whom Jesse told Demetri about when they had been held in the dungeon when they were caught trying to steal the Serpent's Jewel. They arrive back at Kayne's ahead of Demetri but find the rebels have kidnapped Pavel and taken him back to there stronghold in district 2.

Without stopping they gather supplies and prepare to rescue Pavel. As Demetri and the guard are at the front of Kayne's hut Jesse and the others sneak out the back. They travel without stopping to a hidden cave and take shelter in it. Jesse tells them of the Race of people wiped out long ago during a great war with the king's armies and the underground city they built underground using tunnels to connect the different sections of the city. Demetri uses Aleric's powers in dreams to follow them to the hidden cave. Being forced further into the abandoned caves of the Roarics, a race of people conquered by the king over 25 years before. While venturing farther into the caves to get away from Demetri who has found them again Jesse and the others find out that the Roarics are not all gone and the caves have not been totally abandoned. Moreover, the Roarics are not happy about outlanders being in their tunnels and capture Rae, Silas and Jesse.

Silas, Jesse and Rae have learned the art of working together, but Silas lets his desire for revenge rule him placing all of them in danger. Rae has learned to temper her act first and ask questions later for the most part but a lapse sets them on a path none of them expected. Jesse still feels as though the others do not value him as a full team member and the health of Pavel is still unknown. Each adventure brings the trio closer together but the past also puts distance between them. Can the three young heroes learn to embrace their differences and see that those same differences are their greatest strengths? Can they finally loose Demetri? Will Demetri succeed in capturing and killing our three heroes and the remnants of the Roarics? What so Jesse and the others do with their knowledge of the Kings actions against the Youth Guard?

This is the second book in the Amarias series and I recommend you read book 1 The Quest for the Serpent's Jewel first. It is a very quick read and although listed as a young adult I found it quite a fun read. Ms Green will bring the characters alive with her words. You can close your eyes and bring the makeshift encampment into vivid detail in your minds eye. Kayne and his home will seem so real you will smell the smoke coming off the cooking fire. Stop for a while to let yourself be drawn into the world of the Amarias Adventures. I have greatly enjoyed this series so far. I am eagerly awaiting for the release of book 3 and not just so I can check out if it as a book my nephews want to read.

I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I really, really liked this book, and I think it is a terrific YA/MG read! It is book 2 in the Amerias Adventures series and it picks up immediately where Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel leaves off. Jesse, the 15 y/o boy with the lame leg, who is traveling with two members of the Youth Guard, Silas and Rae, are headed back to Jesse's home town where the town healer, and Jesse's friend and ally, is hiding the third Youth Guard member, Parvel, who had been injured at the beginning of book 1. (Sorry - a bit run on, but you get the picture!) They have discovered that Demetri, who is basically the law in Jesse's home town, has been ordered to find and eliminate all of the Youth Guard that he can, and that includes Silas, Rae, and Parvel. Apparently, the King commandeers the brightest and fittest of the youth in the villages of his reign to work for him as his own personal youth guard, but in reality he has them killed because he doesn't want to take a chance that they will rebel against him in the future. When Jesse, Silas and Rae return to rescue their injured friend, they find out that he has been kidnapped by the Rebellion. Now they have to evade capture by Demetri and find Parvel, who is being hidden at the Rebellion headquarters, which is underground in the mountains.

I think this is a terrific series for YA/MG readers because it has lots of action and adventure, and a great underlying moral to it. It it a clean read with some violence, but it is not excessive or superfluous. Any violence is definitely important to the story, or it is not told at all. The teens in the story are very determined to do what they think is the right thing, and there is good character development over the course of the books. There is a Christian undertone to the story as Parvel is devoutly religious, but it does not in any way overshadow the story. It is just a natural part of it.

In summary, I really did like this book, just as I did the first book in the series, and I will definitely be reading any further books that I get my hands on!! :D

Taking up where Quest for the Scorpion’s Jewel left off, Escape for Riddler’s Pass is exciting and action-packed as Jesse stands by his new friends in the Youth Guard in their search to save one of their own who has been kidnapped by the Rebellion in District 2. Jesse, Silas and Rae are now on a journey that leads them through the caves of the Roaric dwarves and on to Riddler’s Pass, hoping all the while to find Parvel still alive. As they near Riddler’s Pass, the three young people are captured and face some of their darkest moments that will test them to their limits and beyond. Will they all survive and bring Parvel out with them? Will Parvel’s God protect and guide them?

Escape from Riddler’s Pass is a wonderful addition to this action-paced young adult series, full of scenic detail and characters that have gained even more depth than book 1! The trials they face are larger than life and require something more than just a good plan. Jesse is a positive role model, once again for younger readers who crave larger than life adventures!

Escpe from Riddler's Pass starts right after Quest for Scorpion Jewel ends.
Jesse found out why the captain Demetri has been trying to kill the King's youth guard. It is on order of the King himself. The King gathers the brightest and smartest every 5 years trains them and sends them on dangerous missions and most do not survive. King has planned this because they are the ones who might join the rebels and dispose him.
Captain Demetri is hurring to jesse home town where they had to leave Parvel. Parvel was injurred from poison arrow and Kanye was taking care of him. He had no idea that he was in danger from the patrols. Demetri feels that he can beat Jesse, Rae & Silas kill Parvel and lay a trap for them.
But the 3 of them beat him to Kanye and find out that Parvel was kidnapped by the rebels of distric 2 and taken to the deep mines.
They go after Parvel with Demetri chasing them all the way. He even knows about the cave and tunnels where the drawfs used to live in there underground city. It was destroyed 30 years ago and all the drawfs were killed. Or so they thought. Till a drawf caught them and was taking them to his new city but Jesse convinced him that a patrol was in the tunnels and would find them. So they caused a cave inn behind them.
After they escape from being kept by the drawfs they find the mines that the rebels are using and they figure out the riddles to bypass the traps.
The whole book goes from one action to another action and drama. Keeps your attention the whole way.
They learn about themselves and about their friends. risking to save each other lives. Trying to figure what the right way is. Make better choices and think of each other first.
I will read more from Amy Green in the future. I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review

Escape from Riddler’s Pass picks up where Quest for the Scorpion’s Jewel leaves off, as the second book in the Amarias Adventures series. A group of teenagers trained for the king's elite Youth Guard embarked on a dangerous mission in the first book. We begin this one with their trip back to where the adventure began. After returning to reunite with their injured friend, the three young warriors find he’s been kidnapped by a resistance group. They immediately set off to find and rescue him, leading to all sorts of adventures along the way.

They are forced to make hard decisions at every turn, some with obvious consequences and others that aren’t so apparent. They learn the value of wisdom and counsel, and that maybe the God they had written off really is involved in their destinies.

I enjoyed the development of the characters and the lessons they learned. I felt like the flow of the story was a little slow in this book, especially compared to Quest. At times I began to feel the plot was predictable, but just about then some twist would catch me off guard, keeping my interest and making this a book I finished really quickly. A definite recommendation for older children and teens.

Great series for kids 9 and up. These adventures are great!! They also hold a religious element and are very safe reads.

The second book of the series picks up where the first left off. The fantastic adventure continues for Jesse and the other warriors. You get to know the other characters much better in this book. Fun and engaging! More adventure and challenges to face.

Great and exciting books for kids. Such a fun adventure that allows kids to escape to another world. The warriors face many challenges along the way. They often face difficult choices that have consequences. At times the choice and effect is obvious. At others it is more subtle. The kids learn many lessons along the way.

A great series for kids that hold adventure and faith. It is not heavy handed with the religion but it is there.

‘Escape From Riddler’s Pass’ by Amy Green is the sequel to ‘Quest For The Scorpion’s Jewel’. I did not know what to expect from this book, but I got to say that the author has outdone herself.

Like the previous book, I enjoyed this book very much and I was definitely pleased to see a lot of moral values being embedded in this book for readers to ponder upon.

Definitely the kind of books I would approve young adults reading and despite of the short length, I enjoyed the book very much.

Highly recommended for leisure or for classroom use. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I received an ARC of the book from Warner Press via Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review for this book.

Like the first book, The Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel, this one moves at a nice clip taking the reader across mountains and into caverns and pits. I enjoyed this book as I did the first one. This one does have a bigger emphasis on belief in God and morality, but it fits in fairly smoothly for the most part. It doesn't feel like religion is being forced on the reader, but it is clear what the author's personal beliefs are, this may make some readers uncomfortable. It didn't bother me however. There is some character development here as Jesse, Rae, and Silas all continue to struggle with their own demons but the focus is on the action and movement of the story. Once again the book is a nice length for those who can't or prefer not to read the huge fantasies that have become so common. Recommended for those who enjoy an interesting adventure with some religion mixed in.

As good as the 1st novel, Escape from Riddler's Pass, is the kind of book I enjoy. Usually I don't really like young characters but it's not an issue in fantasy are they don't behave like teenagers, and are more mature.
The action takes place just after Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel and Silas, Rae and Jesse are trying to survive as their life is threatened by the King and his guards. They need to reunite with their injured friend Pavel, and leave as Captain Demetri is chasing after them. But this time, they face a new enemy and challenge with the rebels. Stuck between the 2, they have to struggle and keep focus to reach their goal, and save their life.

Jesse, Salis and Rea are trying to stay one step ahead of the patrol that is out to kill them. Along the was the stumble upon a population of dwarfs that are hidden in the caves and tunnels beneath the rebellions head quarters. They also need to save Parvel and they know that he was taken to the Rebellions keep. Silas has his own agenda of revenge over his fathers death, Rae has so many secrets that are starting to slip out that Jesse is wondering if any of them are going to make it out alive.
The teachings about God that Parvel told Jesse are causing Jesse to think about their mission in a little different light. But can he convince his companions that there are things that he know. Will they listen to a crippled boy?

The hero of this book is a young crippled boy who relies on brain versus brawn. This is an excellent young adult book. Quest for the Scorpion's Jewel was book 1 is a good book full of adventure and faith - yet also a great many questions. In this story they (Silas, Rae and Jesse) have finished their quest for the Scorpion Jewel and are trying to rescue a kidnapped friend, Parvel, from the deep mines. They have to work together to solve riddles but then manage to get captured themselves. They learn some strong lessons in this book and continue to build their friendships and their faith. The story is action packed and moved swiftly. Definitely no time to lose interest. I do love this series and give it 5 stars.
