About the author

I'm Al, I used to be a space scientist, and now I'm a writer, although for a time the two careers ran in parallel. I started off publishing short stories in the British SF magazine Interzone in the early 90s, then eventually branched into novels. I write about a novel a year and try to write a few short stories as well. Some of my books and stories are set in a consistent future named after Revelation Space, the first novel, but I've done a lot of other things as well and I like to keep things fresh between books.

I was born in Wales, but raised in Cornwall, and then spent time in the north of England and Scotland. I moved to the Netherlands to continue my science career and stayed there for a very long time, before eventually returning to Wales.

In my spare time I am a very keen runner, and I also enjoying hill-walking, birdwatching, horse-riding, guitar and model-making. I also dabble with paints now and then. I met my wife in the Netherlands through a mutual interest in climbing and we married back in Wales. We live surrounded by hills, woods and wildlife, and not too much excitement.

Strašná škoda, že tahle série po výborném začátku a prvním spin offu šla dalšími díly dost dolů. Už Archa mi připadala dost průměrná a všechny problémy, které měla jsou tady ještě znatelnější.
Stále platí, že dějiště, tedy chladný a temný vesmír plný divných mrtvých věci, je skvělé. Celkový dojem, kterým tady univerzum působí je skvělý. Ať už jednotlivé planety, soustavy nebo loď Nostalgie po nekonečnu. Bavilo mě, jak uvěřitelně působí technologie, i když je to trochu divočejší, než v předchozích dílech. Postavy by byly dobré, pokud by nešlo o třetí díl série.
A právě to je má hlavní výtka. Proč autor přes několik dílů rozvíjí pár hlavních postav, jen aby je tady sebral a nahradil novými ? Mělo to být jejich vykoupení? U některých to tak možná částečně dokážu vnímat, ale u většiny ne. Jako kdyby se Reynolds rozhodl, že ho protagonisté už nebaví a je třeba něco nového. Spoustu dialogů a málo akce často působí neblaze na tempo, což je u takto dlouhé knihy problém. Spousta zásadních věcí se děje mimo záběr a rozhodně nejsem spokojen se závěrem knihy, kde mi plot twist přišel nucený a velmi málo připravený. Jako by autor najednou dostal pocit, že původní myšlenka není dobrá a na rychlo vymyslel nové rozuzlení. Celkové závěrečné drama s nejasným výsledkem mírně odhalil epilog, ale jako finále dlouhého románu tohle u mě neobstálo. Stejně jako smrt antagonistů, která byla tak antiklimatická, jak jen to to šlo.
Zatimco Archa byly solidní 3*, tady to budou sice také 3, ale spíše mírně podprůměrné. Autor má dobré nápady, které ale často překombinuje, přidá pár podivných rozhodnutí a výsledek je pak dost rozpačitý. Reynoldse rozhodně nezatracuju, ale asi to u něj budu mít hodně hit or miss.
