Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea

Famously referred to as one of the "Axis of Evil" countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortress-like country. While living in the nation's capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this graphic novel.

Guy Delisle was born in Quebec City in 1966 and has spent the last decade living and working in the South of France with his wife and son. Delisle has spent ten years, mostly in Europe, working in animation, an experience that taught him about movement and drawing. He is now currently focusing on his cartooning. Delisle has written and drawn six graphic novels, including "Pyongyang," his first graphic novel in English.

About the author

Born in Quebec, Canada, Guy Delisle studied animation at Sheridan College. Delisle has worked for numerous animation studios around the world, including CinéGroupe in Montreal.

Drawing from his experience at animation studios in China and North Korea, Delisle's graphic novels Shenzen and Pyongyang depict these two countries from a Westerner's perspective. A third graphic novel, Chroniques Birmanes, recounts his time spent in Myanmar with his wife, a Médecins Sans Frontières administrator.

Entretingut, però només a estones. M'esperava anècdotes més sorprenents i més explicacions i mostres de com funciona el país. Tot i així, m'agrada perquè és una història aparentment molt costumista, sense grans events, però que enmarcada a la capital de Corea del Nord, fa que el més mínim detall sigui surrealista, com el fet de que només arribar al país t'assignin un traductor i un guia (vigilants, bàsicament), que hagis d'anar a dipositar unes flors que et donen als peus de Kim Il-Sung, o que no hi hagi gent pel carrer i que no vegis ni una sola persona discapacitada al país. L'aïllament del país respecte el món i l'adoctrinament dels coreans per considerar el seu dirigent com un messies ja ho pots arribar a imaginar, però potser no tant fins al punt que t'ensenya aquesta historieta.

Reafirmant la opinió de la primera lectura: visió dantesca i esparverant de corea del Nord. Les manies, les manipulacions a la població, les propagandes de cara als occidentals i als del païs.


Però la història és una mica a avorrida. Un dietari, una col.lecció de fets més que una història amb principi i final.

Feia temps que anava darrera d'aquest còmic, que és una mica assaig, una mica llibre de viatges, una mica dietari, una mica reportatge... Un traç preciós i un guió irònic i molt humà, en una novel·la gràfica molt potent que és un molt bon exemple del potencial del còmic per explicar la realitat.

La veritat és que m’ha costat empassar-me aquest tebeo, en què Guy Delisle (Quebec, 1966) relata les seues impressions del règim dictatorial de Corea del Nord. Com a testimoni d’allò que passa en aquell país ‘Pyongyang (2003) resulta interessant, però el text se m’ha fet pesat i monòton.

Referències a 1984 que fan por. Moltes coses noves per aprendre d'aquesta cultura totalitarisa i les que queden, llàstima que ja hagin passat bastants anys des que Guy Delisle va estar a Pyongyang i va escriure aquests esdeveniments, de ben segur que moltes coses han anat canviant dins el país. So much left to know about NK, such an instigating novel.
