The Poellenberg Inheritance

Rate this book
A woman inherits a legacy of greed, guilt, and deadly danger when her father—a former SS Commander—bequeaths a priceless treasure

Twenty-five years after fleeing Germany, Paul Weiss lives a quiet life in Spain. Throughout his years of exile, he’s kept a single photograph of a three-year-old girl. Now, he will set in motion a series of events that will reunite him with his long-lost daughter.

All Paula Stanley knows about her father is that he was killed in Russia in 1944, his body buried in a frozen wasteland near Stalingrad. Then she gets a call from a stranger. Not only is General Paul Bronsart alive, he wants to bequeath her a priceless treasure he claims was given to him during the war.

It’s called the Poellenberg Salt. For four hundred years, the thirty-six-inch-high gem- and gold-encrusted relic was the most priceless treasure in Germany—and someone else is after it. The matriarch of an aristocratic family whose home was looted by the Nazis also lays claim to the Poellenberg Salt. Culminating in a shocking denouement in Paris, Evelyn Anthony’s The Poellenberg Inheritance is a masterpiece of wartime intrigue and a daughter’s search for her father.

Helen MacInness was the queen of romantic espionage. Evelyn Anthony began writing similar novels in the 1970s after having established herself in historical romance. Anthony's novels are a little more edgy. That is especially true here. While the story has interest, the characters are largely unsympathetic. However, Anthony does a good job of tying up all the major elements, even if one or two are implausible.

Very Good Story

A suspenseful thriller that kept me wanting to know what happens next. The characters are each wanting something but not necessarily the same thing. Everyone wants to know if a Nazi SS General is still alive 25 years after he was assumed dead. This was first published in 1973.

Quick read. Being 2nd generation German on one side, 2nd generation British on another, there was quite a bit of immigrant angst that I've observed in my own family. Perhaps because of that I could not put it down and read it completely in one setting. The romance angle was unnecessary and unrealistic. Otherwise it is an excellent story.

Read this years ago, and recently found it again. Light reading, but intense, and very well written.

Well, I finished my last Evelyn Anthony novel and I have to admit, this one worked a little better for me. I was pretty caught up in the mystery and intrigue from the start and had a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know what the secret was and what on earth a "Salt" was. Sadly, the dust cover for my book is missing (I hate that), and the description was always rather vague, so it wasn't until I googled for the cover photo that it became clear… and even then, I'm not sure why the word "Salt" is applicable to the thing. (If someone understands, please enlighten me.)

Anyway, this is a post-WW2 thriller with a war criminal on the loose, secrets in two families, some murder and mayhem, plus a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. I find Anthony's dialogue very stiff and odd, and her characters are all a little strangely developed, lacking something, but the description of the action is compelling so it wasn't a bad read. I get why Mom enjoyed these books, but I do think these two will do for me.

My first book by this author and only because I was trying to get another book by her on Kindle. Love her writing style and I have purchased a few more by her and can hardly wait to get into them. I was given a copy of The Queen's Men by a friend and it was an old, old paperback with the smallest print ever. I will freely admit that I am spoiled by Kindle, but can't get this one. So I have ordered a hard back book and am eagerly awaiting that.

Interesting. Didn’t like any of the characters. Eric was a bully and an idiot. Paula was a pushover. The rest were ugly and overbearing. I only kept reading to find out the end, i wish I hadn’t.

Better than the first one of her books I read, but not great. One of those books where I was saying ' this ending better be worth the investment of reading this far'. Alas, it wasn't.

This was in the neighborhood little free library and I thought to give it a whirl. Unrepentant Nazis, arrogant aristocrats and crafty detectives. Plus a bigass bejeweled Cellini salt cellar. It was all a bit silly but I enjoyed it.
