The second edition of this widely used introductory textbook updates the work to take accounts of developments in the last few years. John Fiske's study equips the reader with a range of methods of analysing examples of communication in our society, together with a critical awareness of the theories underpinning them. The reader will be able to tease out the latent cultural meanings in such apparently simple communications as news photos or popular TV programmes.
John Fiske (born 1939) is a media scholar who has taught around the world. He was a Professor of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His areas of interest include cultural studies, popular culture, media semiotics and television studies. He is the author of eight books, including Power Plays, Power Works (1993), Understanding Popular Culture (1989), Reading the Popular (1989), and the influential Television Culture (1987). Fiske also acts as a media critic, examining how cultural meaning is created in American society, and how debates over issues such as race are handled in different media. In May 2008, Fiske received an Honorary Degree from the University of Antwerp.
This is an excellent introduction to the study of communication. Fiske uses plain language and simple examples to describe semiotics in an interesting and accessible way. He makes it clear that we are all products of our social and cultural environment, that the assumptions we live with about the world don't naturally occur but are the result of a complex process called signification. It is through acceptance of or resistance to dominant ideologies that we constitute ourselves as individuals and make sense of our environment. This book offers essential tools for critical engagement with the media messages that surround us and guides the reader towards a deeper appreciation for the forces at work in producing our sense of reality.
for those who'd want to delve deeper to the realm of critical theory, cultural studies, and those in need of introductory text to semiotics, i guess this is a pretty easy book to read. quite conceptual, in a sense, but it provided good introductory foundation to the gates of hell -or heaven.
I agree with other reviews that John Fiske makes it very clear and also uses plain language and very simple examples to describe semiotics in an interesting and accessible way. It is definitely easier to acquire knowledge of the theory of communication for the exam.
Jotta meitä ei manipuloitaisi, on meidän ymmärrettävä kuinka viestintä toimii.
It was more interesting than I remember, but still not a bestseller :) It's great that I found more authors worth to read and gonna do that in the nearest future.
i was looking for a good and fresh book for semotics. and that helped a lot. fun to read. i am not a semotics professional but used it in my graphic design thesis. its a pretty good "source".
