Just Another Day in Paradise

Rate this book
Life in the big city is not for the faint of heart. Shadows lurk in sunlight; blood spills on floors; hope and dread are just two sides of a neon sign; and loneliness is a paper cut on the heart, an invisible wound that eventually kills. It has always been so, it always will—the past gave birth to the present, and the terrors recounted in fairy tales and classic plays still have the power to frighten us today. This is a newly curated collection of short stories featuring almost four dozen additional tales of apocalypses (zombie and otherwise), epiphanies, and discoveries in which Katherine Tomlinson explores the dark heart of urban living—the violence that seeps through walls like rancid cooking odors, the paranoia that grows in the dark, nurtured by guilt and grief; the retribution that strikes as suddenly and implacably as summer lightning. It may not be beautiful, but it’s all we have and every day above ground is a victory. So take it one day at a time, one story at a time…Just Another Day in Paradise.

As this is my first ebook purchase, I was pleased to discover that along with publishing the kind of story I like (the author was editor at Dark Valentine), Katherine Tomlinson also writes the kind of story I like.

The collection is superb, well worth the purchase price and the time spent devouring all the stories. You get the visceral punch right right from the beginning, with the first piece (also the title story). It's written in the second person, always a tough act to bring off, but managed here to effect (as are others later on in the collection). It's a pointed tale of the horrors of modern life, and how easily someone just gets overwhelmed. It's a frightening reminder of how close to the line we all are, and how a simple nudge in the wrong direction can be fatal.

So much of current horror writing is crude, tasteless, terrible, cardboard blood-splattering, but that's not the case here. These well-written stories are full of character, and tell what happens to us when things take a turn to the dark side.

This will be a hit with fans of Stephen King, tales in a similar vein, but given a personal stamp by the author. So when you're in the mood for a shiver of frisson, or "exploring the dark heart of urban living," pick up this collection and settle in for some chills.

I won this book from Member Giveaways on LibraryThing.

I just finished reading this book of short stories and had to post this right away! What a great read! The stories are "dark" stories, but very interesting. I'm really not sure how to review this book, as the stories are short and about different things. I noticed that most of the stories tend to revolve around "karma", as in people getting away with things, but then bad luck or death follows them later. My favorite story was the very last story (appropriately placed in my opinion!). It was about a Lady and a stray cat named Otto, which the Lady (as she was called in the story) found while the cat was being bullied by a group of kids. I don't want to ruin the story by describing what the story was about, but the ending gave me goosebumps. Those are the types of stories that I love!

This is a great book for those who don't mind dark (but not too dark) subject material. I would say it is appropriate for adults and maybe older teens. I do recommend it to those who want to try it - you won't be sorry!

Its a collection of articles or short stories that is very good but weird collection. One was about how they drug space command and faked moon landing. another person standing in line at a movie was shot. A lady waiting for 8 hours to get 88 dollars in foodstamps lost her temper at worker. A quite lady that no one really new at work and the building got bombed. they get the point across. easy to read and follow.

I liked this book. I really did. And the reason I repeat that was that I didn't think I would. After while, one depressing story after another should get on one's nerves, but in this case it didn't. I like the smart writing style and the most absurd sense of observations of human nature. While I'm not sure exactly who I would recommend this collection of short stories to, i do recommend it nevertheless.

Loved the short stories!! I read this in the form of an e-book. It is definitely worth reading a million times over. Can't wait to read the new e-book that Katherine has out. Just waiting for it to upload to B&N.com.

I loved it!

The funny thing is that I'm always saying this phrase "Just another happy day in paradise"... I wonder if I'll turn out like the main character?

A great little story.

Great collection of different short stories. If any thing read it for the last story "In The Kingdom Of The Cat", I bawled like a baby at that one.

This was a collection of short stories. Some were interesting and some I couldn't bother reading past the first couple paragraphs.

The entire way through this book, I had deja vu, although I don't remember ever reading it before. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed every story, and I highly recommend it.

The first story hooked me!

I don't like short stories, and when I realised this was a whole book of them, I wanted to stop, but I couldn't. I enjoyed every single one of them.
