A lady must always guard her heart...when tempting a rogue.
In the glittering ballroom of London’s most exclusive gentleman’s club no one is more powerful than its mysterious proprietress, Vienne La Rieux. A shrewd businesswoman, Vienne treasures her hard-won independence and has her eye on a prize that could make her England’s richest woman... until the only threat to her heart arrives, sending her controlled world into chaos.
Lord Trystan Kane is as familiar with success as he is with the exquisite Vienne. She’s the lover he’s never forgotten, and so, when an opportunity arises that would make them partners once again, he takes it. But Trystan has underestimated the enduring power of the chemistry that originally sparked their passion. And with an enemy watching from the shadows, any attempt to mix business with pleasure could have disastrous consequences.
Además, he echado de menos a Jack.
This book had a few things going for it, so I think I’ll start with those. First, it was funny. There were several witty scenes and snippets of dialogue that were really quite humorous. Sometimes it was funny in a silly, ridiculous way and other times it was funny in a witty, sarcastic way – but there was plenty of comedy in this book. The other thing it had was a good cast of supporting characters. The supporting characters obviously don’t need as much development as the major characters, so I found they were alright. There were an awful lot of them, though.
What did this book not have going for it? Everything else. For example, the romantic plot was entirely ridiculous. Most of the book was the cast of supporting characters convincing Trystan and Vienne to talk to one another. If I had kept a tally of the number of times they were told to talk to one another it would probably be in the thirties. It was ridiculous. If you can’t talk to one another, you clearly don’t want to be together. There wasn't any real chemistry or build-up between them either. Though Smith certainly tried to give them some sexual friction, I really couldn't feel it building to a climax (pun intended) throughtout the story.
Vienne’s self-loathing due to the ‘issue’ in her past was really stupid. It was an issue that shouldn’t have been an issue. After 'knowing' enough men and seeing enough of the world, I felt that Vienne should’ve realized that the things that happened in the past weren’t her fault. Her self-pity and ‘I’m-not-good-enough’ attitude really got on my nerves. Instead of feeling bad for her, I was annoyed by her. Also, there wasn't a big enough emphasis placed on her conversation about her past with Trystan. If it was really such a big deal as Smith tries to make it out to be (after all, it's affected Vienne's whole life and attitude) there should've been a lot of talking about it. As for Trystan, he's a saint. I can’t imagine anyone being patient enough to put up with Vienne for life. I thought he was a good hero, at least. Patient, kind, and very considerate.
All in all, this book was disappointing and a drag. Throughout the book I found it harder and harder to keep reading. The pace was slow. The plot line, focusing around dangerous attacks at Vienne’s new business was unexciting and uneventful. Even the climax for it was cliché and boring. It lacked good writing that would’ve built up the suspense. In other parts of the book, I found stiff dialogue, awkward phrasing, grammatical errors, weird analogies, terrible clichés, and TSTL moments. Clearly, this is a book to skip. This book was true to its series name – it was the completely stereotypical soap opera, melodramatic and overdone.
“Sexy”ness rating: Heat is there. Eh.
Overall Rating: D+
Bottom Line: This book was a poor read. It just couldn’t seem to grab hold of my attention for very long. There were some awkward phrasing, weird analogies, grammar mistakes, and stiff dialogue problems that eventually made this book a rotten read. There were simply too few redeeming points to make up for the terrible heroine, plot, and writing.
At London’s most exclusive gentleman’s club, Vienne La Rieux reigns supreme—a powerful, independent businesswoman who has built an empire on her own terms. But when Lord Trystan Kane walks back into her life, the one man she’s never quite forgotten, her carefully controlled world is thrown into chaos. Trystan is determined to win her over, both in business and in love, but Vienne isn’t one to surrender easily. And with an enemy lurking in the shadows, their rekindled passion may come at a dangerous cost.
This book has all the elements of a solid historical romance—intrigue, passion, and a hero who knows exactly what (and who) he wants. Trystan is an absolute gem of a leading man, unwavering in his love and devotion. Vienne, on the other hand, is a tougher sell—her relentless stubbornness makes the romance feel unnecessarily drawn out, testing the reader’s patience. While the story moves at a decent pace, it never quite reaches the level of unputdownable excitement. The chemistry is there, but the push-and-pull dynamic overstays its welcome.
In the end, this book is a one-time read for me—enjoyable, but not especially memorable. If you love a hero who will chase his woman to the ends of the earth, you’ll find something to appreciate here.
I reviewed this book for Romance Reader At Heart website:
RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS:
One of my favorite romance set-ups are between an older woman and a younger man. Not surprising, mind you, because I'm married to a much younger man, so I had great expectations in regards to this story; and while I liked the older woman/younger man premise, I had a very hard time with the chemistry between these two.
From the start of this story, it is assumed that I knew, and was familiar with, their past. Well, I was, but some of you out there may not be, so heed my advice and don't read this book until you've read the previous two. Trust me, it will help you `get the picture', and you'll be more sympathetic to both Vienne and Trystan.
Our heroine, Vienne LaRieux, is older than our hero, Trystan Kane, by some five years, and while now at thirty to her thirty-five the age is a non issue, seven years ago, in another place and another time, he was just a `boy' compared to her `mature' self of twenty-eight.
For the better part of her life, she's hiding a secret, one that threatens her future. Long ago, she broke the budding relationship with a young, impressionable, and much in love Trystan. She did that in order for him never to find out her secret.
Lord Trystan Kane is the third son of a Duke, and as such, he's aware that sooner or later, he'll have to take his life into his own hands and make his own way in the world. What better time than while his heart's breaking? He takes his broken heart and himself to America, where he makes a fortune in trade, does some hard growing up, and after all these years, decides to head back to London to prove to this woman that he's made something of himself. He is determined to prove to her that leaving him was the biggest mistake of her life.
At the opening of the story, I took our heroine for a strong woman, one who has made her own way into the male dominated world. She appeared to have a lot going for her. She seemed in control of her own life (a scene where she shoots her lover and employee when he won't take `no' for an answer comes to mind), a shrewd businesswoman, (she's about to build a shopping mall, for Heavens sake!), yet she appears to not know her own mind where her feelings are concerned, in regards to a man that she very well knows is no threat to her. I didn't understand her reasoning in thinking that Trystan, after managing to gain a fifty percent share in her building venture and forcing her into an equal partnership, was in it for revenge. She knew, or ought to have known, that he cared for her; otherwise, he would have gone after her years ago.
Now we come to the plot of the story: the mystery of who's behind the threatening letters and accidents that are going down on the site and endangering them both. That was completely an unnecessary plot! I would have rather preferred this to be a heartwarming, second chance at love romance and a character-driven story. I wanted to feel compassion for both, but I just couldn't muster it.
Even the end was a letdown, and as much as I loved Trystan, I wasn't happy with his happily-ever-after. Out of the three books in this series, I have to say that Grey and Rose's story was the best.
Hey fellow readers I don’t summarize the books (as there are always great full summaries written that I read myself).
I only give it my personal, general, summary of 5 stars to 1 star.
3 stars: This book is worth a read but didn’t really have me excited about interacting with the book where I could not put it down. It lacks the excitement and well roundness of my personal markers for a great read throughout the book.
Development and interest in main characters, secondary characters, humorous, movement of the book, writing/conversation and romantic/sexual content (1-2 scenes or too much unnecessary).
Read it once and that is enough for me.
However, if this book is part of a series, I would read the next book (pervious book) in the series as it would still peek my reading interest.
I’ll continue reading from this author. I wouldn’t cross the author out of my potential reads in the future.
One thing annoyed me so much. The timeline was such a screwed up! I like to know how old they are, and this book confused me to no end. It changed everytime like Ms. Smith couldn't even decide or probably just simply didn't remember the timeline. I faintly remember in the first book, Rose was on her early twenties. Maybe 21 or 23. And the age difference between her and Grey was about ten years. So, that made Grey at most 33. Bronte was on her first season if I'm not wrong, she was in her 18th? I think there was some talking about Trystan had an affair with Vienne when he was out of university, maybe when he was 18 to 20? And Trystan had gone for about seven years, so it made him aged 25 to 27 at most. In the second installment, there was no timeskip and Trystan went home when Grey on his 33th (at most).
This book was a direct continuation of event, where Jack was still a newly-reigned earl. Vienne said that when the affair took place, she was 24 years old, four years older than Trystan. Alright, then that means that at that time, Trystan was 20 years old. After seven years, he should be in his 27th, but he had his 30th birthday already. What the? It was my first confusion. Then he mentioned that Archer was six years older than him, and Archer and Grey's age difference was not much. Meanwhile, Bronte was eight years younger than him. Wait, it didn't match with the first book! If it was true, then in this book, Archer was 33 years old, and Grey was even older when Grey should be 33 years old at most. Did I mention that if I followed his magically 30 years old birthday, Archer would be 36.
Then, sometime later, Ms. Smith decided that Bronte was ten years younger than Trystan, and he was gone for ten years, not seven years as it originally mentioned, and later on it came back to seven years gone. What the hell! Could you made up your mind already? It irked me so much it chewed some of my enjoyment with the book.
Anyway, other than the obvious plot holes, I couldn't more disappointed with how the ending turned out. It was too damn short! They deserved an epilogue! I was so disappointed
Tristan is the third son, as he says, not the heir or the spare...not particularly attractive (nose is too big), and made his fortune in trade. Vienne LaRieux, is the older woman, who Tristan refers to as "the virago, the viper, the vicious vixen", after she ripped his heart out when he was little more than a boy. Now, a shrewd businesswoman, she is setting out to build a shopping emporium. Tristan, seeking to finally prove himself to Vienne, has managed to gain a 50 percent share in this endeavor, forcing the two of them into a partnership. Though partners, each seeks to gain the upper hand over the other.
I really liked this book - I did not particularly like the title, a bit misleading as I did not find Tristan to be anything 'roguish' - in fact, if anyone was to be classified as a rogue, it would be Vienne - who has no qualms whatsoever about using me, using her feminine wiles to control them, and discarding them before they become attached to her.
I loved that Tristan has two older, overprotective brothers - so refreshing! Usually it is the female who has those endearing brothers that we all wish we could have, in this case, it is Tristan, and he would be happy to send them to us just so that he was no longer bothered by their interferences.
I liked the storyline, especially how the author allowed the romance to blossom (or in this case, reblossom) before the two characters were hopping into bed. Tasteful and steamy sex scenes, and yes, even in the bedroom the two of them are fighting for who is in control!
I loved Trystan's character because it's always wonderful when a hero knows instinctively that he loves his woman and will do whatever he can to convince her that they belong together--even if it means to retreat from her for a while. However, I thought Vienne was as stubborn and thickheaded as an ox. I have no tolerance for a heroine who refuses to recognize the devoted love that's staring her in the face while feeling a wonderful 'rightness' whenever she's with him. This sort of couple is counterproductive and unnecessarily drags out a story. Trystan deserved a better partner, but I have to give him kudos for hanging in there until he won his lady love. 3.5 stars.
Good story with an older couple which I tend to like. Vienne was a strong woman with a good business mind. Also set in the Victorian era which is always fun.
