True Blood #1

Rate this book
Blood and sex mix on a hot rainy night at Merlotte's, when Sookie and her friends are trapped by a vengeful spirit who feeds on shame. People die and dirty secrets are revealed as Sookie, Bill, Eric, Sam, Tara, Jason, and Lafayette and are all coerced to dig deep and tell painful memories from their past—those things we all have locked within us that we never tell another living soul! Bon Temps, Louisiana has never been stranger, or more twisted, in a story co-plotted by TRUE BLOOD series creator Alan Ball, with a script by David Tischman (Bite Club) and Mariah Huehner, and lush art by David Messina.

Vi la serie completa, libros pendientes quizás algún día, pero esta historia no sé muy bien donde encajarla y no entusiasmó el incio, dudo continuar. Para pasar el rato, no aporta algo nuevo a la serie.

True Blood #1
PLOT: There's a celebration going on in honor of the day Vampires came out the coffin. The celebration has extended to the streets and includes public displays of sex and the burning of houses. Merlots is pretty empty when Sookie arrives. An associate of Eric comes to Merlots to call in a favor from Eric. Fangtasia is shorthanded and after he offers her triple the pay Sookie accepts. Though not too happily and refusing to wear anything leather. A hooded figure has a message for Eric and doesn't mind staking whoever is in his path to get to him and deliver the message. Sookie runs into Jessica at Fangtasia and she reflects on what her life was like a year ago. The next day Sookie and Dawn discuss a date she had. Hoyt comes to Sookie's rescue when someone she previously went out with and a few friends disrespect her. We find out there may be more to Sam than Sookie knows. Sookie unknowingly displays her faerie powers when threatened by the same guys in the bar. Then we see the news story about the introduction of the synthetic drink (True Blood's) debut, signifying Vampires can mainstream and not rely on human blood. It's then Sookie realizes (and tells Jessica) she sees she's not the only freak. They're interrupted by a surprise that isn't quite on the menu (Chow's head) on a silver platter.

MY THOUGHTS: Not too impressive! Not sure where it fits into the series. (Granted I haven't watched the full series in a minute). The artwork is low quality. You can't tell who some of the characters are supposed to be. Only when they're names are said do you know. The plot has a flashback that I didn't know was a flashback until I read it the second time. I know flashbacks are a little more tricky to do in stories and comics but all that's needed is a bubble that says "A Year Ago". (So it really isn't that tricky. I retract my previous statement). At least for comics. Only because I watched the series and read all the books did I know this was Sookie's fairy power. Otherwise, it just looks like a flash of lightning. It didn't even look like it was coming from her hands. After I read something I can usually remember what I read. Only a little of this stuck in my brain and I had to go back and reread this a second time. On the second time some of it I didn't even remember from the first time reading it. I think what I was expecting was a continuation after the season ended like Charmed. This definitely was not that!

RATING: 1 Very poorly done! (Next, to the lowest rating I've ever given anything).

This is my first comic book series....obviously I am very invested in these because I lurrrrrve True Blood more than anything. Good little side story. I like how both the graphic novels and the comics supplement the TV show, but I like the comics more because I find the art work more appealing. I bought 1-8 at a comic book store here in Cupertino (I'm missing #6 though....so if anyone can tell me where to get it.....)

But yeah. I like these! The first four are focused on "Where where you?"--aka where where you when vamps came out of the coffin. Super interesting.

What I like the most is how all the characters retain the voice I am used to, even in comic book form. Bravo!

Comics #1-6 Review:

The story arc is interesting, as is the short background stories each character tells. My only problem is the length, or rather the lack thereof. Regardless, my obsession with True Blood is high enough that I paid the RSP for each comic and will be pulling the collection out whenever I need a fix.

I read all six in less time than it took my kids to have a bath. I am glad I did not pay $10 each for them. The story was dull, but you have to say the artwork was imaginative. I won't be buying any more graphic novels.

So far it's good; the story clearly takes place after the events of the first 2 seasons. But if it's a tie in to the upcoming season or not, well that's yet to be seen.

I was expecting more. Just a dissapointment. Stupid story also when the drawing is great. A waste of money.
