category romance, urban fantasy-lite, plot moppets -- if that combination of things sounds appealing to you, I think you would like this. It really didn't work for me, though.
The good: Carina Press. The copy editing was really well done and the book was available in non-DRM ePub format, which means I could read it on my iPod or on my laptop with no problems. Win!
The ok: The plotting. It mostly made sense and was a fairly interesting storyline, although I do hope that at some point the author explains why the villain wants to take over Detroit. There was brief mention of other places in the world, but mostly my response was... Why Detroit? Why not Raleigh or Beijing or someplace else? I'm willing to roll with it, but I need to understand the strategic importance of Detroit in this world.
The bad: The world-building.
Very loosely sketched out. I never really got a feel for the cultures of the different races or any of the locations. It was like the author took a bunch of fantasy tropes, threw them in a blender, and came out with a mess. It might work for category romance, where the focus is more on the character development, but as an attempt at urban fantasy it was pretty much a fail.
The really bad: The characters. I won't go into the secondary characters, since even the primaries were so poorly sketched out as to be stick figures.
Dina, the daughter of Elise and the maybe-daughter of Aidan (although the answer to the maybe part is broadcast pretty loudly in the first chapter, which makes one of these characters look like a moron). Dina is intelligent, sparkly happy, and super powerful. She is also kidnapped through most of the first part of the book, thus bringing Elise and Aidan together again to search for her. So the question is, is Dina a plot moppet or a toddler MarySue? Having all of the reasons that Elise and Aidan broke up 5 years prior solved with the addition of Dina to the mix doesn't work for me, but given the number of Harlequin titles that work on this precept I imagine that it was a very deliberate characterization on the author's part.
The five-years-ago version of Aidan is described as a workaholic control freak. The present-day version of Aidan is a kind of schmoopy Fae lord with magical powers and a big bank balance. He apparently really regrets letting Elise go 5 years ago, but seriously, a really powerful Fae lord with a ton of money and servants can't find out his ex-girlfriend's phone number and give her a call? Yeah, she moved to Vancouver, it's not like she moved back in time.
Elise, though, is the one who bugged me the most. She's half-Chinese, half-Irish. The Irish part isn't discussed at all, and the Chinese part of her heritage is characterized by her fondness for wearing cherry blossom scented products and a reference to foot binding. Over 4,000 years of Chinese culture whittled down to cherry blossoms and foot binding. She doesn't even call her mother when her daughter is kidnapped or recovered. I mean, really? Really? Once again, there are telephones in Vancouver (which is, I assume, where her parents live. They're not really mentioned at all.) Other than that, she pretty much stands around and gets mad that Aidan tries to protect her.
Bottom line: I feel like there was so much potential in this book, but it was so poorly thought-out that none of it really worked for me. At the end it, my reaction is: needs improvement.

Motor City Witch is a great read, full of everything you could want in a paranormal romance; fun characters, interesting plot, steamy scenes, emotional connections and well written prose.
Long time readers of Mills and Boon might find the plot structure a little similar, and it certainly does have a formulaic feel to it in many ways; but, as I've mentioned in previous reviews, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Mills and Boon is just a publisher, but we now so well known that we now associate it as a genre all of its own, and the writing style works!
This is actually part of a series, but it's the first in the series I've read, and I didn't actually realize it was part of a series until about half way through. We're launched straight into the plot, and within a few pages the author has introduced us to the characters, given us a decent back-story and padding the characters out to create a connection for the reader to latch on to. It's a great example of a smoothly written, fast paced story; if only more were like this.
I normally have a problem reading books out of order, but Motor City Witch, despite being in the middle of the series, has inspired me to go back and read the earlier books. Written in such a way that you didn't miss out on any of the story from previous books, and even though you could work out the significant plot points, I don't think it has blown any of the 'twists'; and we're left with a hint of what is to come in the next book.
The characters are all fun, but again there is that formulaic aspect coming in to play, making Motor City Witch an incredibly fun 'no-brainer', there are some nice twists, but overall it's a book to read for pure light entertainment. The story is paced well, with peaks of action, and peaks of 'relaxation' too. I'll even go so far as to say that this is a bit of a re-reader, it's so inoffensive and light it's the perfect thing to read in-between either dark and gritty urban fantasy or sickly sweet romance. Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy.

Motor City Witch is book 2 in the Urban Arcana seires, and let me tell you, it’s just as good as the first one. I started reading, pleased to find the story was abut Elise, as I’d grown curious about her in Motor City Fae. Excited to get to know her and Aidan better, I dug in.
Adina, Elise’s young daughter, is kidnapped. As Aidan, Elise’s former lover, had just become aware her daughter existed (and he thought she was his), Elise automatically thinks Aidan took her child. When she finds out he didn’t, my stomach rolled over along with hers. Terrified, she joins Aidan on the search for Adina, but telephoning the regular police isn’t an option. It’s obvious someone from Underhill took the little girl to get at Aidan, and trying to find her would be a tricky business.
With numerous friends helping, Aidan gives orders and puts a plan into action. With a member of his staff a traitor, and also someone from Elise’s witchy faction clearly on the side of the baddies, the pair have to be careful who they trust. Anyone could pass information to the kidnappers, alerting them to the carefully laid plans.
When the kidnapper makes it clear he’ll swap Adina for Aidan, and only elise and Aidan can go to Scotland for the swap, everyone is thrown into action. They must go through portals, some on this realm, others on Underhill, and hope the abductor doesn’t find out Aidan and Elise didn’t come alone.
Just when you think it’s all over and everything is going to work out, a twist comes along. You’ll root for Aidan, cheer when he succeeds in a second mission, and sigh with the happy ever after.
Best Bits: Faster and faster the scenery whizzed by, glinting in the moonlight, until it was all silvery blur. (Great image here!_

Verdict: Motor City Witch was a jolly good read that I couldn’t put down. I enjoyed the kidnap aspect (I’m not sick, honestly!) because it gave the book a sharp edge that had me wondering what would happen next, had me thinking about where Adina was and how she was being treated, while at the same time knowing everyone was doing their best to set her free. Fab!

I thought Motor City Fae had some potential as the first book in a new paranormal romance series and so I welcomed the chance to review the sequel, Motor City Witch. This book continues the main story arc from the first, but shifts the focus to the relationship of Elise and Aiden.
Elise and Aiden's relationship is nicely developed and they are both likeable characters. Aiden is less arrogant than I was expecting, and I think Pape managed to show several sides of his character. Elise has strength, common sense and is a more coherent heroine than Megan was in Motor City Fae.
As a paranormal romance, the plot is secondary to the romance of the featured couple, however there is a reasonable balance of mystery, action to maintain interest. Pape has vastly improved the flow and pace of the story over the first, characters actions push the plot along rather than convenient coincidence.
I do feel that in general the writing style lacks sophistication and subtlety. In my advance copy I found a couple of errors that I assume will be fixed on publication. Pape has a talent for writing her initimate encounters though, they are steamy and tastefully explicit, though I think at least one of the sex scenes was poorly placed in the storyline.
Pape's world has so much potential with a mix of fae, werewolves, witches, djinn, trolls, goblins and even orcs but I don't think she provides enough detail to really immerse you in the fantasy world. She doesn't effectively explain how the worlds of Overhill and Underhill relate to each other, nor how the other paranormal creatures stand in the parallel system.
For me, Motor City Witch is a rather ordinary paranormal romance, but I think fans of the formula will be entertained by it. I hope that Pape continues to improve the series as it grows.

I love the world in the Urban Arcana series, the different factions of supernaturals and how they interact with each other especially. We learned a lot about the Fae in Motor City Fae, so one would expect to be submersed in the world of witches in Motor City Witch. We do, but we also get an even better look at the inner workings of the fae, see more of the shifters and learn of other supernaturals previously unseen in the series.
From a romantic aspect, Motor City Witch focuses on Elise, a healer/witch and her relationship with Aidan, a Fae lord. Beyond romance, the thrilling and heartbreaking kidnapping of Elise's daughter Dina is in the forefront. Aidan is convinced Dina is his child, hidden away by Elise, but Elise claims Dina is the product of a rape that occurred after their relationship ended.
More than anything else, Motor City Witch made me fall in love with Aidan again and again. He cares for Dina almost instantly, blood-relation or no. His connection with the child, and the emotions that brings, surpasses both the romance and the action, making the book a truly heartfelt experience. That isn't to disparage the hot connection between the adults. Aidan and Elise have their relationship issues, but when the clothes start coming off, the world falls away and sexy doesn't begin to describe their connection.
I would have liked if the witch aspect of the book has been played up a bit more, but that's more a matter of personal preference than a complaint about the book itself. Motor City Witch is great mix of paranormal romance and supernatural thriller and a wonderful follow-up to Motor City Fae. I'll definitely be checking out the next book in the Urban Arcana series.

I am really digging this series, great characters, creative plots and yummy steam. Each book gets more into the intrigue and draws you into the series. Great mix of supernatural creatures, lovin the Urban Fantasy elements.
Aiden was a favorite from the first book, so I am happy to see his story. Things jump right off at the beginning of the book. I would have liked so sort of prologue to show us their past relationship. I prefer to see things rather than be told about them after.
Elise is a very interesting gal, she has been through a lot. She really had great strength, especially when it comes to her man or her child. I loved her empathy, it really went hand in hand with her healing. It would have been nice to see more of her struggle after the attack, it would have made her growth more impressive.
The dynamic between all the characters is great. The story progresses at a great pace, never a lull. The world becomes fuller and more detailed as the series continues. Love the mixed narrative, you get a much better feeling for the romance when you have both character's POV.
The steam is really delicious, even in the midst of all the drama. I love the yummy smexy action, this series gives plenty of delightful detail. This will seriously warm you up!!
I listened to the audio-book, the narrator, Gabra Zackman, does a great job. She has distinct voices for each character. She does a wonderful job of going with the flow of the story. I will definitely be looking for more read by her!
I can not wait to see the next books, you get hints at the lead couples in them. Next up is a delicious werewolf!!

Motor City Witch is the second book in Pape's series which moves between Detroit and the Fae realm. This installment starts out strong with a confrontation between past lovers witch Elise and Fae lord and Detroit portal guardian Aidan Green. There is also a fairly strong action packed plot in the background which expands the conspiracy lead by Elven purists against those who have some Fae blood and has some real emotional moments when several half blood Fae members of the families who aligned against the purists are kidnapped.
I enjoyed Motor City Witch, almost as much as the Motor City Fae even though the romance between Elise and Aidan wasn't quite as well done as in the previous book. Even though I liked both the leads and their chemistry was good together, the motivation for love scenes was a bit more forced in this story – possibly due to the fact that the action in the background plot didn't leave much time for quiet moments for the pair to allow their reconnection to build more slowly. Instead during the rare downtime between crises for Elise and Aiden early on in the story, there was 'I just want a distraction sex' and 'Life affirming sex' and those tropes always feel like they are forcing the steamy stuff in rather than having them flow more naturally . But it wasn't a huge detractor because as I mentioned I liked both of the leads and I wanted to see them together
So I still am hooked on this world with witches, Fae and werewolves. I was happy that the past pair Ric and Meghan have a part to play here and that there are clearly two future pairs waiting for their turn in the spotlight – I already have the third book, Motor City Wolf, on pre-order.

Let me first say that faeries aren't really my thing, I discovered this when I read Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. That said, the Fae didn't annoy me in this one (yay for the author!). I thought they were at time snobbish and egomaniacs, but well, I get that when I read about royalty as well, so that wasn't really a big deal.
I would however have liked if Pape had gone a bit deeper into the paranormal side of the story instead of the romance part. There are so many different paranormal beings to choose from: Fae, witches, werewolves, orcs, all come wirring past, but I felt like the story could have revolved around typical human beings and been just fine as a romance.
I liked Elise and Aidan as the main characters, though I would have liked to see Elise man up a bit more and not jump to weird conclusions sometimes. I also liked the girl, Dina, she was a bit mature for her age, but I like smart children and she was definitely intelligent. Although I thought her huge magical abilities were a bit too much for an untrained 4-year old.
Oh, and if you can't guess who the father is after reading the summary, you should probably read it again (it was pretty obvious).
I didn't really get why Elise's brother was so angry with Aidan, sure they had broken up and he should be all brotherly protective, but after about 5 years that should sort of pass, right? I also assume we'll get to see why he has such a strong dislike for werewolves in a book that centers around him in the series.

This book was so bland and run of the mill, with like a million uninteresting characters and a silly blend of romance tropes that made me laugh like crazy.
Our hero, Aidan is a pirate turned corporate raider Fae Lord. *snorts*. He's lived more than 1,000 years but when he finds the "only woman he's ever loved", he's too busy with other stuff and lets her go without a fight. As you can see, neither character act as if they are really in love. If you really love a person, you should put your love ahead of your pride and let them know how you feel and don't give up at the first opportunity.
The murky issue of Dina's paternity is the author's way of having a secret baby plot without blaming Elise. All I can say is that it didn't work.
Most of the plot was spent rehashing what happened in the first book and introducing so many characters that it was impossible to determine who was who. The seemingly insurmountable problems that separated these two in the first place weren't even an issue now so that tells you that if only they had talked a bit, these could all have been avoided.
The narration was good. I'll listen to another book narrated by Gabra Zackman but definitely not continuing this series.

Motor City Witch is as vibrant and magical as its cover. Imagine the cover as the Christmas wrapping and the content as the gift.
From the feisty beginning to the euphoric ending the world and plot structure is smooth sailing. The shared romance and the characters-especially darling Dina- is refreshing like the first sip of water after miles of hiking. *ahh* I enjoyed every page turned of Motor City Witch. For those who are not as easily enticed as I am at the sound of romance there is more to this novel. Action is not in short supply. I found MCW perfectly rounded with all the makings of a fantastic escape.
If you are a fan of Paranormal Romance and Happily Ever After this is your cup of tea. Cindy Spencer Pape is bubbling with talent. I am very eager to read more PNR from her. In fact, I will have to read book one in the Urban Arcana series. I skipped the first one because the second one I could not stop thinking about. The family aspect of this novel tugs at my heart strings.
Highly recommended read.

It's been 5 years since Elise Sutton's heart wrenching break up with Aidan Greene. A lot has changed in that time. Elise has given birth to a girl named Dina and lives a non magical life. Aidan has just seen Dina for the first time and it's clear that she is his child, even though Elise keeps denying it. When Dina is kidnapped-Aidan runs to Elise side to help. He means to bring Dina home no matter what. And has every intention of winning Elise back as well.
It's no secret that I'm a fan of Cindy Spencer Paper's work. I love Heroes In Stone and Urban Arcana is becoming a fast favorite. Motor City Witch is a story of danger, action and romance. There isn't a dull moment. Elise and Aidan, were featured in the first book, I'm so glad there got their own story. A dangerous and vibrant world that is contemporary and fantastical. Detroit plays the host to this series that involves both paranormal and fantasy creatures. All around a very enticing world to spend time in.

I very much enjoyed reading about Elise and Aidan. In the first about 30 pages I didn't think I was going to like it as much as I liked book 1 Motor City Fae but I was pleasantly surprised and happy to find out I was wrong. There was plenty of Action, Twists, Turns and Sexy scenes to keep me entertained and engaged. I also love it when series that have books about different characters continue including the previous book characters in the background so you can continue to follow there story and this did with Meagan and Ric.

This was really good, and it helped that the narrator was much better on this one then the first book. In the first book, Motor City Fae there is a slight hint at the prior relationship between Aidan and Elise. Here we get the full story of what went wrong, and see the opportunity for second chances. It was a good quick listen with a HEA, it will be interesting to see if the author continues the series and if she does I wonder who will be next...George and Fiona or Desmond and Lana..although a story that combined the two would be good....

This was a awesome ebook that I picked up due to a friend who told me it was a must read and she was right. I found out after i started reading that it was the second book in the series but i could not stop reading then i was hooked. I did not miss the first book this book told me everything i needed to know so happy i found it and the sex was so good in this book and not in a gross perverted way but in a good love story good sex way. Loved it..

The plot might have been interesting, pity it's difficult to believe it.
Mostly because, the romance is off. (There's no way I believe a woman whose child has been kidnapped has sex on her mind...with the guy who is responsible for the kidnapping. This same woman has been raped, hasn't had sex in five years. But begs to have sex now in order not to think...)
Characters are a strong part in a book when this is not driven by action or plot. If you make them shallow, there's not much left.

Overall I liked this one better than the first (even though it's been a few years since I read it). This was written in such a way I was able to quickly pick up where book 1 left off. More characters are introduced. Meagan and Ric from the first book make an appearance as well. I liked Aidan and Elise both separately and together. They get their HEA. The underlining story arc/mystery continues.....

Which werewolf cousin is next? (I ask because book #3 is tentatively named Motor City Werewolf, according to Twitter.) Anyway, looking forward to it.

I had read this a long time ago but didn't remember the story when I read it again. Great characters that I was interested in their lives but of course Dina was my favourite. There were a couple of deep topics that were handled quite superficially so definitely more of a light read.

I like this author and find her to be very similar to Cynthia Eden. I don't understand why Eden publishes mainstream and Pape doesn't. In any case, this was an enjoyable read. Rec'd for fans of Christina Warren.

This is a fun series. There was enough back story here for the characters' relationship to be understandable, and a good continuation of the series-level story arc.
