The saying goes that all men are created equal... but Nicole Abbot knows better. Lacking the supernatural gifts of the Sentients she has known all her life, Nicole has lived with her nose pressed to the glass, withering beneath the guilt of her own inadequacies and the disapproving glare of her father. It's easy to believe that the universe has forgotten all about her, but things are not always as they seem. With the arrival of Christian Wright, a handsome but complex Combatant with a troubled history, Nicole is forced to question everything she has ever believed about herself, proving that sometimes, our most flawed perceptions are those reflected in a mirror.
Jennifer DeLucy again plunges us into the world of lingering spirits, dark apparitions, and malicious vampires. But this time she takes us to the California coast where we get to know a new ensemble of gifted souls that are just as vibrant and endearing as the Sentients we came to love in Seers of Light. In Whisper of Light, DeLucy delivers exciting supernatural encounters as well as very human interactions that will both break your heart and make it soar.
Jennifer DeLucy is a best-selling author of paranormal fiction, most notably The Light Series Trilogy through Simon and Schuster, performer and musician who believes in combining talents to create unique and inspiring work. Born and raised in Northeast Pennsylvania, Jennifer moved to the Midwest in her early twenties, honing her passions and publishing her first two novels before moving to Seattle, Washington, where she lived for nearly a decade. In true full circle fashion, Jennifer bought a little house in the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania, where she continues to share her heart through music and storytelling for all ages.
I am a huge fan of DeLucy's debut novel, Seers of Light, therefore I was eagerly anticipating this next book, and while I enjoyed Whispers of Light, I can't say it held the same magic for me as the first book.
I think the issue is I couldn't help but compare the two novels. While I believe Seers had the perfect blend of heart stopping action and whirl wind romance, Whispers was more of a slow build to a journey of self discovery.
Still, the emotional journey that Nicole went through was very poignant. Here is a girl, living in a house full of Sentients who all possess extraordinary abilities, while she remains just a regular human. If that wasn't enough, she attends to her feeble minded mother who was 'injured' defending Nicole, and she must deal with the constant ridicule from her father who is admittedly disgusted the fact that Nicole is not a Sentient.
At the heart of it all is Christian, the Combatant from Seers. This book finds Christian much changed from the first. His attitude and outlook on life has completely reserved into something optimistic and open. Yes, he is still the hard-headed yet handsome Brit I quickly grew annoyed with in the first book, but in Whispers he seeks a solace in his life that I can't help but yearn he finds. As with Nicole, there is a vulnerability in Christian that makes me feel very protective of him, so their combined silly stubbornness nearly drove me mad!
Whispers of Light was definitely more character driven than plot driven. Yes, there were side stories to small adventures into the supernatural world, but nothing as edge of your seat as Seers. Yet, I was able to forgive the lack of climatic plot because I was enchanted by the characters. In fact, one of the reasons I tore through the book in one sitting was because of how beloved the characters became to me. Even though Nicole is constantly being torn down by her father, she is a pretty funny girl with a great sense of humor. Still, the humor doesn't hide the hurt and everyone becomes very protective of her, especially Christian. Also, when you have a large family of individuals living in the same house, heads are bound to butt when said family member can't help but feel entitled to get involved in your personal life, and such was the case for Nicole. The importance of family and belonging was the evident message, and one I found quite soothing at the end; and it helped to have the nosy, playful, humorous and entertaining moment from each family member throughout the story.
And I'm not gonna lie, the five second cameo with Lily and William thrilled me to no end!
I really only have one gripe. One of my biggest peeves is to see the word "Whoa" misspelled like this: Woah. And I saw it misspelled several times in Whispers. I don't know why it bugs me so much, but it does. Possibly it has to do with my long time crush on Keanu Reeves. No one can Whoa me like he can. To be fair, woah is in the Urban Dictionary, so maybe I just need to brush up on my lingo?
Bottom line, I'm a fiend for emotional angst in stories, and Whispers sated my need for that while slowly revealing a very enduring love story. I'm so happy there will be a third book in the series, because I'm not ready to let the Sentients and their loving companions go.
I´ll start by saying hat I enjoyed this book much better than the first one. I don´t know the way things were going in the story simply made more interested in it. Maybe was also the protagonist of the book, the one that tells the story.
Nicole is a non-sentient she doesn´t have any kind of endowment and that´s why she feels like her family´s black sheep. With a father that doesn´t appreciate her at all and a sick mother she tries to deal with her life the best she can. The book begins a little bit before the ending of the first book and after five chapters or so, we come back where we left, Christian leaving with Wendell´s group. The first time Nichole sees Christian she mumbles and the thing gets a little awkward. So the time passes and they fall in love, but she thinks she´s just a rebound and the things go back to the way they started. This book was honestly better for me that the first one, and making comparisons I think Nichole is even stronger than Lily, because she had to fight and defend herself without any kind of power and that took guts, and Christian, well I definitely love him. There´s not too much action in this book as it was in the first, but still is amazing. A topic that´s also very present is the nature, how Nichole living near to a beach, sees how dangerous people can be with the environment. And I have to admit that this book took some tears of me. I´d love it and I can´t wait to read the third one.
'Whispers of Light' is the second novel in a great paranormal fantasy series that follows a young woman who is taken from her normal life and is suddenly brought into a world that she always thought may have existed, but never had proof. Now she's trying to avoid being killed while figuring out who she really is and what she's capable of - not to mention the two guys who are willing to die in order to protect her.
I thought that this story, which was the second in the series, was just as well written as the first book and had a good flow as well. I found myself once again sucked into the story from the very first chapter and I didn't stop reading until I finished the book - which only took one day. Again, I found that the setting of the book was a perfect choice for the story - it continued to contain a great mix of the fantastical and magical aspects that made the story of the first book feel realistic and supernatural. The characters and their problems continued to be interesting and had lots of complexities, which I thought made the storyline of the novel believable and makes the reader more invested in the narrative. The second book in the series continues along the interesting story and will keep readers coming back for more.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
After that little disappointment in the first book I thought the same thing would happen with this one. But then something unexpected happened. Being confused at the beginning (yet again I haven't read the blurb) I started to realize what this book was about. This story happened (mainly, only the end didn't) at the same time as first book only here the main plot was about another group. First thing that got me was narrator, Nick was so great storyteller. I really enjoyed reading this story form her point of view. Second thing was Christian. In the Seers of Light he wasn't my favourite character, I neither liked or hated him, but here he was such a great character. About the story (I'm sorry for not telling you more but I don't want to post spoilers so I can't say much), after certain things happened in first book Christian decided to say away from his society for sometime and he moved to another group where he was doing same job but with different people. Being broken he wanted to stay away from some people, but he couldn't imagine that there his views and life would be changed. I really enjoyed reading this book. Now I'm happy that I haven't gave up and continued reading this story. 5 stars for this book.
Whisper of Light, by Jennifer DeLucy is an engrossing, gut-wrenching, tear- your- heart- out and put-it-back-together delight. I couldn't put it down. Which for me, is bad, because I'm participating in NaNoWriMo this month. I shouldn't be reading at all, just writing. Still, I knew when the second installment in the Light series came out, I'd have to purchase it. I promised myself I'd read only when waiting to pick up the kids and in bed at night. Um...yeah, that didn't happen. I devoured the book in a day and a half.
Jennifer DeLucy has a wonderful voice and strong talent for creating characters that stick with you and make you feel. I fell in love with Nicky instantly. My heart bled for her, and the abuse she quietly took from her father. Duncan was a real ass, and DeLucy did a fabulous job with him. I found myself gritting my teeth anytime he graced the page.
I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that I liked Christian in the first book, but I fell in love with him in Whisper. Can't go wrong with a shmexy British combatant. Woohoo!
I *heart* Sentients! I was privileged with a sneak preview of Whisper of Light, second novel in the Light series, and it was indeed a treat. I was a little leery of being introduced to a whole new group here---wasn't sure they could capture the magic of Abram's group in Seers---but I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I fell in with them. Jennifer DeLucy has an amazing talent for managing a big cast. Each character has his/her own distinct personality, and it never feels like they're fighting for screen time; the story has a natural flow.
Even though there is no big, intense supernatural showdown like we had in the first book, we get to see plenty of Sentient action with each case offering some new insight into the world of specters. And even here, DeLucy offers up engaging variety with a whole buffet of apparitions - no two ghosts are alike.
And the romance...ah, the romance. But I'll let you find out more about that all on your own. ;)
First, I would like to say that this is a beautiful story about discovering yourself and being happy with the way you are. I didn't understand how someone could be so insecure about life in general and Mrs. DeLucy helped me get it. Without giving spoilers, Christian is completely sweet in this book. He has an amazing soul/hearth and could help Nicky to see herself for the great person that she was. She learned that you don't have to forget your needs to satisfy the others. Great read!!
Seriously, Nicole needs to drink a cup of concrete and harden the fuck up!!! Her dad is dick and she frustrated me to no end to let him get away with the emotional abuse he was dishing.
There is nothing worse than living in a house full of sentient but knowing that you are not really part of them. You are just an ordinary girl – without any endowment, any extraordinary talent – and this means that you require protection from other sentient, being an unneeded burden to them when you and your group are in danger. This is how Nicole feels and this is the world that she lives in. What makes it worse is that, without the supernatural ability, her father sees her as a failure, as a nothing, as an embarrassment and pretty much determine to make her life a living hell. She has nowhere else to go. Her guilt over certain thing that happened in the past trapped her here, in this house, with an awful father and group of extraordinary people. Being here makes her realise how small, how worthless she really is.
Nevertheless, the arrival of a new Combatant, Christian Wright, to Wendell’s group lightens thing up a bit for Nicole. He treats her well and for the first time in her life, there is someone out there who sees and accepts her just the way she is. Christian, who initial purpose to join the group is to run away from the past that haunted him in Seers of Light (click the title for full review), begins to feel that there is something connects himself to Nicole. He starts letting himself to think that there is still possibility for him to find love, something he has stop believing in after what had happened in his old group. However, the self-consciousness and insecurity that get in the way proves that building this relationship is harder than it may seem. Whisper of Light is a book about a journey towards self-discovery and self-endurance. To move on is to let the past goes. The question is: Are they strong enough to make that happen?
I have to admit that when I knew Whisper of Light is not really a continuation of Lillian’s journey from Seers of Light, I was left sceptical and a little disappointed. The fact that Christian was not entirely my favourite in the previous book makes this feeling even worst. But soon as I started reading, I realised that the sequel might be different, but it is unique and interesting nonetheless. The author, Jennifer DeLucy, has masterfully creates a spin-off that lets readers view the personality of the characters from a totally distinct light. One of the things that I like most in this book is the change of scenery and atmosphere from the first instalment. This gives a new breath to Whisper of Light and it was so well-written that you feel as if you are really there with this group of Northwest sentient. What this book lack of, I think, is the amount of action. There are some small adventures here and there but none is as intense as found in Seers of Light. Still, what this book shorts of is made-up in its in-depth emotional tone, where there are number of parts so intense, so moving you cannot help but really feel for the characters.
The aspect that serves as the backbone of the book is indeed its row of well-developed casts. There are numbers of them in this book (in the whole series, in fact!) but it feels like the author managed to create each and every one of them with different personality and most important of all, purposes of their own. I truly admire the female lead in this book, Nicole, as she is such a strong-willed, sweet person yet have a very fragile heart at the same time. Her personality and situation are being described in a detail way till it is so easy to relate to her and understand her predicament. The change in Christian’s attitude is also remarkable, surprising and I found that my thought on him begins to change. So I think it would be interesting to see the further development in this character in the next instalment. The other thing that I really appreciate is the fact that DeLucy does not create the love interest between these two based on lust, but instead begins it with something far deeper and sweeter. The pace of this book is a little slow but I honestly feel that it suits the tone, the atmosphere and the theme just perfect.
As the conclusion, I feel that the number of distinctions between Whisper of Light and its predecessor make these books even more memorable in minds of the readers. If Seers of Light is filled with heart-pounding action and Whisper of Light is saturated with heart-warming love story, I really cannot wait to see what else Delucy has for us in store for the final book in the series. Such an astounding book that I thoroughly glad I got the chance to read. I believe you should too!
It is with true love as it is with ghosts; everyone talks about it, but few have seen it. - Rochefoucauld
Book two in the Light Series Whisper of Light, is a beautifully written novel. As if led by the invisable hand of a lingering spirit, we journey to California where we meet a group of Sentients each with their own quirky sense of appeal and completely different to that of the Sentients in Book one. Whisper of Light coincides alongside Seers of Light (Book One) but focuses on Nicole Abbot and later in the novel Christian Wright, a Combatant Sentient from Book one.
Nicole is a talented musician who devotes her time between applying music therapy to children and caring for her ailing mother who is suffering from severe memory loss after being attacked (protecting Nicole) by a dark entity. Both Nicole’s parents are Sentients and much to Nicole, but more so her father’s, disappointment she has no endowment herself not realising that her endowment is her gift to empathise with children through music and her kindness. Nicole lives with the constant ridicule from her father, his insistent belittling of her and disgust at having produced a non Sentient, it is only when Christian comes along that Nicole begins to believe in herself. Each Sentient is unique in their own way, completely diverse to the Sentients in Book One and you can’t help but imagine that they would be the easiest going bunch of people around, who you could just hang out and be yourself around; I mean, who wouldn’t love to hang out by a Californian Beach practising taekwondo? Or hanging out with Nicole & Christian?
Christian Wright joins the Californian Sentient group to escape (& sort out) his recent past, he is dealing with his own demons unable to accept the blow to his family, loosing his father, by his own hand having to kill his father before he turned into a vampire. At first Nicole’s skips around the edges and uses every possible excuse to avoid Christian, although she can’t deny the instant attraction but convinces herself that Christian would never be interested in such an ordinary girl. As the story develops, we learn that Christian is a sensitive, family man and helps Nicole with Samantha; one of the children she works with, Nicole can’t help but admit that she is besotted with Christian and seeing him with Samantha only enforces her feelings towards him. I’m glad Christian met his match in Nicole, and although they both share troubled pasts and seem almost opposites, they compliment one another, being perfect opposites.
Jennifer’s storytelling is magical, she has a way with words that transport you into her world; I could almost feel the sand on my bare feet walking the beach with Nicole and smell the damp, freshness of the Redwoods imagining looking up through the leaved canopy; Jennifer manages to create characters that are so realistic, you’re able to relate to them on a personal level, like the layers of an onion, each character seemingly has many layers which add depth and develop the character. Although this book differed to the first, in that we learnt more about the rigmarole of everyday life of being a Sentient and more so of the characters Nicole and Christian, and their personal (and combined) journey of self discovery, Jennifer still managed to pique my interest, my fingers itching to flip through the pages and willing my drooping eyes to remain focused absorbing the words as quickly as possible. And besides, we did, after all, have a quick visit back to Philadelphia where we met the Sentients from Book One.(heart palpitations aside), Whisper of Light is a beautiful piece of writing interwoven with the mystery of the supernatural world and I very much look forward to Book Three.

4.5 - Jennifer DeLucy’s Light series continues with its second installment in Whisper of Light. If you haven’t read Seers of Light (Light, #1), first off – what are you waiting for? And secondly – this review might include some spoilers, so be prepared, some might be unintentionally included.
With DeLucy’s ever present beautiful writing, story and some of the characters from the first book that we know and love returning in Whisper of Light, I sat down and didn’t get up until I had devoured each and every page of this book. With such a strong story, characters and writing, what’s not to fall in love with here?
In Whisper of Light we meet a new type of heroine – Nicole. She’s unlike the Sentients she was born, raised and still lives with – she was born into this different life without any Endowments or supernatural gifts. She’s quiet and somewhat stand offish and lives life with more than just that burden. She’s under a huge amount of stress and weight on her shoulders and a huge part of that comes from her father, who is really a piece of work and to this reader, she kind of felt like a stranger in her own skin as she tries to live and cope with just being… well normal.
I enjoyed reading Nicole because to me she stuck home time and time again. She’s one of those characters who so many people will be able to relate to. The questioning of one ’s self and where they fit into the world, and how they feel so different from everyone around them really were key points that even I found myself deeply understanding.
Then we have Christian who has come to live with a new Sentient group to try to heal himself from the past. Again, you need to read Seers to understand just why Christian ventures so far from home. It’s through Christian we get to see some of the real Nicole and through Nicole we in turn get to see some of the real Christian. Those points in the book are few and far between, but I felt that was the point – again DeLucy with amazing pacing and timing showed that, well, to change and see something from a different point of view about yourself doesn’t happen overnight.
That’s one think that I think DeLucy has hit the nail on the head with. She’s patient with her story telling and allows her characters to fully grow and come to terms with things in a way that we can all fully understand. Her characters personalities aren’t all that far from true and can be found in just about each person if we take the time.
All in all DeLucy is, in my eyes a writer who has amazing amounts of talent and who I for one will be waiting on pins and needles for the next book in the Trilogy. Anything she writes for that matter, I’ll be eager to get my hands on. I’ll be sad to see it end but will forever keep my fingers crossed that maybe someday her Sentients will talk to her again. So, for now… everyone hurry up and read both her books. You won’t be sorry! The third book in the Light Series looks to be released sometime late Spring. *softly nudges Jenn back to her computer to hurry up and write the next book!*
I love this book. I love this series. The. End. Seriously, though, Ms. DeLucy has delivered an amazing book. I’ve read this book probably 3 or 4 times now. Every time it’s just as amazing as the first. I even have the same reactions: OMG! AWWWWWWWWWWW! NONONO! I actually skimmed through the book again before writing this review and had the urge to read the first book (Seers of Light) so I did (that was probably the 5th or so time I’ve read that one). What I love about Whisper of LIght as well as the whole series is that Ms. DeLucy fleshes out her characters so well. I relate to her heroines and all the secondary characters remind me of people I know. They all have talents, likes, dislikes, quirks, flaws, motivations and insecurities. No one is completely evil or completely good. Everyone is gray. Even Duncan. Ugh. He was horrible. You find out why he treats his daughter the way he does...but still...no excuse! But that is a driving force in why Nicole is the way she is. Just like with the first book, with Lily, I felt like I really related to Nicole. Nicole was never weak. She was always strong, just hidden and scared. Scared to forgive herself. This causes her to sacrifice things in her life to hopefully gain approval from her father or to make up for her what happened to her mother. Cue Christian. Christian is hot, British, and kind. On his own self-forgiving journey, he sees Nicole’s strength and challenges her to be brave and start thinking about herself (not in a self-absorbed way, just in a stop putting yourself last kind of way). I will admit, I was skeptical about having Christian be the love interest in this book. I found him so annoying in Seers of Light. But I found I really really liked him! Part of the way through the book, we get to see William and Lily for a little bit. (OMGOMGOMG) It’s very brief, but left me very happy. What’s great about these few scenes is that we get to see their relationship through an outsider’s eyes. Let me tell you, there’s so much love, it made me tear up. (I swear I could be an empath :P) Nicole is an interesting character Finally, my favorite thing about this book and this series is Ms. DeLucy’s story and writing. Jennifer DeLucy’s writing flows so well. Her ability to write non-cliched dialogue and story at the same time as making her characters speak like normal people makes her one of my favorite authors. This book wasn’t that plot driven. However the characters were so interesting and the dialogue was so real and at times funny that I barely noticed. This book is more about relationships, what it means to be a family, and what it means to love (not only others but oneself). I like the spiritual aspect of the books, as well. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not religious! These books have soul. I HIGHLY recommend this book and this series. There’s tons of paranormal stuff, romance, drama, and even even some humor.
*Contain spoilers if you haven’t read Seers of The Light!
When I heard that Whisper of Light would tell Christian’s Happily Ever After, I was ecstatic. However, when I saw that the story would follow a different group of sentients and would be told not by Lily, main character of Seers of The Light, I was very doubtful. I am extremely happy to say that I stand corrected! I loved Whisper of Light and Jennifer DeLucy has a an absolute fan in me now.
In Whisper of Light we see the world through Nicole’s eyes. She was born from sentient parents and raised in their world. Her father had huge expectations for her, but when Nicole grew up and no sentient powers were forthcoming, she had to deal with the fact that would forever be ordinary in a world full of the extraordinary.
Christian had to get away for a while. Seeing the woman he thought he loved, engaged to the man he used to hate and that actually saved his life, was more than he could take. He then joins with another group of sentients and finally has a chance to find out was love really is.
What i most enjoyed about this novel was the sweet romance between Christian and Nicole. Usually in PNR novels there is a lot of lust that turn into love, but this time the romance was something slower and sweeter. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy hot smex in my PMR, but this was a very welcome change of pace, where the hero and heroine got to know each other and fall in love before ever getting to the down and dirty.
Whisper of Light doesn’t really have much action and definitely nothing like the last part of Seers of The Light, but it was an estremelly enjoyable book nonetheless. It was beautiful to see the journey that Nicole takes, learning that even though she isn’t a sentient, she is special in her own way.
Jennifer DeLucy has created such a beautiful series that I recommend to Paranormal lovers everywhere! I just hope that there will be more books in the series!
4.5 stars. I'll start by saying that the cover to this book is not only beautiful but very fitting to the story. The story takes place in Northern California, where there are beautiful Redwoods around. Nicole was a character I could easily identify with, in fact I saw a lot of myself in her. She hates her thighs and she doesn't think much of herself and her father pretty much encourages this with his attitude and comments. I really hated his character, a lot. Nicky is a therapist and a piano teacher, she plays amazingly well. Her patience is limitless as she takes care of her mother (who was damaged by a dark astral) deals with her demeaning father, works with a timid little girl named Samantha (who doesn't talk or react to anything) and teaches piano lessons. It's obvious that she has a lot on her plate, but she handles it the best she can while putting her life pretty much on pause. Then Christian comes along, you might recall that he is from the first book in the series and thankfully we get to learn more about his character and find out if he does end up happy. I won't say what happens in the first book but for the sake of this review I will imply that he goes through some traumatic stuff and comes to California for new scenery and a chance to regroup (mentally/emotionally). Their chemistry is almost instantaneous, they're opposite in certain ways but it only encourages them to help each other. Nicky thinks she isn't good enough for him and it broke my heart to read about it, but I understand that she feels a sense of duty to her mother and father (who doesn't deserve it). Will she find happiness? Will she be able to let go of her insecurities and accept love? I adored this book more than the first, Christian's character simply melted my heart and Nicky was a heroine I cheered on with all my heart. Perhaps there is something to be learned from a character like her, we all have our insecurities and past, but how is it that we're able to overcome them for a chance at real happiness? This series is a unique combination of paranormal/uplifting themes which makes for two great reads so far.....
“How do you like California so far?” Rajeep asked him. “Oh, it’s quite nice. Very scenic,” Christian said. “You should see it when there’s leaves … on … things … ” I heard myself say. Uhm, what? Leaves on things?
It pains me to only give this book two stars since I loved the first one so much. After everything Christian had been through he deserved a happy ending. I wasn't sure I was going to love him as much as William because he acted like a complete ass for pretty much all of book one but when I finished reading Whisper of Light I was surprised to find that he didn't annoy me once but Nicole sure did.
Nicole has been treated like crap for most of her life, as soon as it became obvious that she would have no powers her father shunned her at every angle. She is riddled with guilt over so many issues, mainly what happened to her mom since she feels that it was her fault. Then Christian comes along and he doesn't see a sentient without powers, he sees a musically talented and beautiful woman.
“Any minute now you’re going to keel over, your heart beating at the rhythm of a bird’s. And you’ll probably be reaching for your coffee the whole time.”
What I didn't like about this book was the lack of development between Christian and Nicole, they kissed once then she ignored him for most of the book with excuses like she wasn't good enough or she'll drag him down. When they finally got together it didn't seem genuine, more like being together for the sake of being together. (If that makes any sense) Nicole also annoyed me, she was such a push-over. She lets her dad abuse her in so many ways and just does nothing. Then what her 'supposed' friend does to her was pathetic. I would have been furious, she just laughs and says "hey, it's ok"...like hell it is!
Overall I didn't particularly like this book, maybe it was because I loved book one so much and had high expectations while going into this one.
Kind of a Catch-22. I want you to notice me, but I don’t want you to notice me wanting you to notice me.
Whisper of Light is the second book in “The Light Series” and just like the first book, it did not disappoint, although, I liked Seers of Light better. Jennifer DeLucy again does a fantastic job describing the characters and their surroundings and making the reader feel like they are in the story. I recommend you read “Seers of Light” first before reading this one because some of the first book’s characters and their story carry on into this book.
Whisper of Light is the story about Nicole and Christian. If you read Seers of Light you would know who Christian is and understand why he chose to leave Pennsylvania and come to live with Wendell and his Sentiments in California. I don’t want to say why because I don’t want to spoil the first book, but I will say that Christian was looking for a new beginning. Nicole’s father, Duncan (which she only refers to him by his first name in the book) is the biggest jerk ever and treats her like crap. You see, Nicole’s parents are both Sentiments and she just turned 29 and has yet to know is she is one too. For that reason, her father belittles her, calls her weak and treats her horribly. Also, Nicole’s mother was injured by an evil Astral while trying to save Nicole and for that reason, Nicole has always felt responsible and guilty for her mother’s illness. So now because of guilt, she has let herself go and isn’t worried about her own life. That is until Christian comes around and together they overcome their own issues.
While reading, there were times where I laughed, cried and other times where I wanted to slap Duncan in the head. I have to admit that when I finished the book, I was sad because I felt like I wanted more. I kept waiting until the very end, but nothing. Overall this book was really good and I totally recommend it
It might be part of my OCD nature which demands that if it’s a series then the main character should be the same. However, in the real world, series could be based on the same “world” and not necessarily with the same main character from the first book (whom I get really attached to!). If this is the case, as it is here, I’d start reading (if I ever get to it) with some reluctance. This is not to say that the book itself isn’t good, just that I’m being obsessive compulsive! It’s me, it’s not the book.
In terms of writing, DeLucy did as well as the first book (Seers of Light) but I just didn’t enjoy this new character, Nicole Abbott. Her martyrdom really grates me. She accepts the way others treat her even though it hurts terribly and not because she can’t handle confrontation but because she thinks she deserves it. So, most of the time I feel like shaking her; I don’t like it when I feel like that about a main character. That’s not to say that she didn’t change but it just took forever. The romance is kinda sweet. I said ‘kinda’ because as both sides are troubled souls, it was that much harder for me to appreciate. But then again, did I mention that I get attached to the main character from the first book? Suffice to say, that I like the way she ended this book. Nothing compares to that ‘*sigh*, *how wonderful!* contentment feeling which should come with all romantic books ;p
Just because I enjoyed the ease of reading DeLucy’s writing, her witty but natural dialogues, and the sweetness of the ending, I’ve rated this 3 stars. But… I’m really keen on book 3 as we’re getting back to… Lily Hunt! Yeah! You can check out the book trailer here…
I'm really starting to hate myself. Why do I keep holding off all these good books? I mean, I see this book and I'm all like, "Sounds good. You're mine." Then, when I get it, I put it away on a faraway shelf and start to read another book which ends up being super crappy. So, in the end, I'm all like "WTF has the world come to? Honestly, where have all the good books gone to?" One year later, this book catches my eye and I reread the summary and I'm like, "Hmm. Christian. Sounds hot." Then I start reading and BAM. I'm sucked in and I fall in love. And in the end, I'm left saying, "Well, shit. Can I get another one of these?"
Keep in mind, I totally skipped the first book in this series. It did not sound like my cup of tea, so I passed. Whisper of Light was wondrous. Nicole is our main character and I just loved her! I'll admit, at first, I thought this was a YA book and Nicole was in her teens. Then, in like the second chapter, Nicole says she's twenty nine and I'm over here, all bug eyed and thinking, "Did I read that right?" The whole book was really good and every part was amazing (especially Christian). When I was halfway through the book, I had to stop because it was 2 AM and I had to go to sleep and while lying in bed, eyes wide open and transfixed on the ceiling, all I can think is, "Ohhh....myyyy....gosshhhhh. What happens next?" As you can imagine, the first thing I did in the morning was reach for Whisper of Light and continue reading until I finished the book. Obviously, I was not disappointed. I don't want to give anything away because the summary is pretty much all you need. But there's more to it in the book. Trust me.
So, I highly recommend this book or this series. Your choice, FYI. As for rating: 4.5
I love Jennifer Delucy's writing style! It is really quite beautiful...the way she describes things and feelings is almost like poetry. She immediately grabs me and pulls me all the way into the story. Seers of Light was one of my favorite books of 2010, so I was super excited to read Christian's story. I loved it so much, but I have to say it was not quite as good as the first book.
William and Lily's love story touched me so much, and I think what was missing here was delving into Christian's issues. The book focuses mainly on the heroine, Nicole, and I really grew to love her. She is the only non-Sentient living in a house of people endowed with special talents. She has been abused by her father into being so insecure she actually believes she is less than everyone else in her "family". When Christian comes along, she is afraid to let herself love him because he is a Sentient. Christian went through a lot in the first book and has undergone a drastic transformation from intolerable jerk to super sweet guy. The thing I didn't understand is that Nick and Christian never really delved into all he'd been through. There were a couple of moments, but I had trouble believing their love because of the lack of understanding. They had so much in common and I feel they could have benefitted so much more from some honest conversation. Her choice near the end had me scratching my head...seriously girl?
It was nice to see all of Abram's people again, and I enjoyed most of the people in Wendell's family. I loved Wendell just as much as I loved Abram.
I hope Ms. Delucy continues this series because I love this world, but honestly, I'd read anything she wrote!
Ana's review on the blog: Whisper of Light is the second book in “The Light Series” and just like the first book, it did not disappoint, although, I liked Seers of Light better.
Whisper of Light is the second book in the Light Series. I really liked the first book a lot, Seers of Light. However this book, I love. This book focuses on the West Coast Sentients that we first met in Seers of Light. The west coast sentients are a bunch of lovable misfits. The storyline centers around Nicole. Both her parents are sentients but Nicole doesn't appear to possess any special gifts. Her father is a jerk, to put it nicely, and her mom is having some memory issues. Nicole feels out of place in her own home, unloved by her dad, and lonely. I liked her character growth throughout this novel. I love how Jennifer DeLucy transformed her character. I think Nicole is someone who we all can relate to at some point in our lives. Nicole's world is rocked with the arrival of Christian. If you haven't read Seers of Light I don't want to ruin it for you but he had a rough time in that book. Christian arrives on their door step looking for a new start but also coming with emotional baggage of his own. Nicole has to learn to trust not only herself but Christian also. They have to work together to help save a little girl. I really like Christian. His character really opens up in this book. Jennifer DeLucy gives us more back ground information on him that makes him more likable and appealing. Overall I really love this story. This book was like my favorite kind of ice cream with awesomesauce poured all over it. If you haven't read these books you are missing out!
Jennifer DeLucy has a great way of writing. There are very few authors whose writing style I really appreciate. She is one of them. Whisper of Light is another very simple book with not a story full of action or any twist or turn. It's a very light read. That said, it still keeps you engrossed. The characters are lovely. You can relate to them. There were times that I just wanted to get inside the story and cuddle Nicole. She is such a lovely character. A very strong lady yet lacking a lot of self-confidence. She had a guilty conscience about her mother which her father never let her get over with. Her father, Duncan was a bastard. There was not one time that I liked him. No matter what reasons he hid behind, he was a very sour man and I simply can't stand people like him, who think they are better than everyone else and who see everything in black and white and never can treat their own wife or daughter or any other family member with respect. Christian was a lovely gentleman in this book. I loved the humor, I loved Gin's character too, although his admission in the end left me stunned. I wanted to dislike him for that but just like Nicole, I couldn't bring myself to do that. I really enjoyed reading this book as well. Especially after reading Kiss of Frost, it gave my mind some well-deserved peace.
Once again, I really enjoyed this book. I was curious to see where Christian's story would go once her left for California. I liked the new cast of characters, but not as much as the first book. Nicole and Christian were my favorite part of this story.
I really felt bad for Nicole. She's such a sweetheart, but allows herself to be taken advantage of. She feels responsible for her mothers health problems and she lets her dad to treat her unfairly. I was happy to see her finally let go of that and learn to take care of herself. I also liked that she was a therapist. She was so sweet with Samantha. I really enjoyed watching Christian and Nicole fall in love too.
I was a bit worried that Nicole was going to be a rebound for Christian. He was so hurt and sad until he met her. Even though he is a Combatant, Christian is a sensitive guy. He has issues that he needs to work on too. I really felt like Nicole and Christian weren't all that different in that way. They both had to let go of feeling responsible for others.
This book wasn't as fast paced as the first book, but I still enjoyed it the same. I felt like this book was a bit softer and more romantic. If you're looking for a great series to start, check this one out. The books are well written and held my attention to the end.
Whisper of Light was AMAZING! I can't even begin to put into words how amazing and epic this book was for me. I am all about the hearts and flowers in a relationship and sometimes I feel like I don't get that enough but in Whisper of Light we got a fist hand account of love blossoming for Christian and Nicole.
Nicole is the daughter of a Sentient with no powers. She feels like an outcast because both of her parents and everyone around her has powers. As she watches everyone around her use their powers she grows weary until a new comer comes in to the group. Christian comes in to this new group because he could no longer stand to stand by and watch the girl he loved marry his enemy. The heart knows no bounds and when his heart is ripped apart he seeks another group to follow so he can get his mind off of Lily.
When Christian meets Nicole he is not sure what to make of her. The more time he spends with Nicole the more Christians heart starts to open up. Nicole may not have any powers like the group but she has the power to love and be loved and she brings that to Christian who accepts it and realizes that what he has with Nicole is true love. Nicole has the power to heal his broken heart and she does that. I can't say anymore because I will really spoil it for you but this is the sequel to Seers of Light and it is just as EPIC as the first!
Just like Seers of Light, this book was deep, touching, and entertaining. Nicole, the main character, is one of the most patient people in the entire universe (both literally speaking and literature-world speaking). While being patient is certainly beneficial to her therapy and music clients, it doesn't help her personal life out much. She's so set in her current life that she tends to put her own wants and needs on the back burner. This is a beautiful story of Nicole's development in finding how how valuable she really is--despite what her father tells her. And now Christian!!! It was awesome to see Christian really come to life and to get to know the real "him". I swear that you will swoon over him! In Seers of Light I didn't understand him, therefore I was PRO WILLIAM, but he certainly pulled me right onto his lap in Whisper of Light. I won't say more for fear of revealing spoilers! As I knew she would, Jennifer DeLucy pulled me right into this new Seer family, making me love (most) of the characters and hating a certain one :) I laughed, happy-sighed, cried (several times), and swooned. And now I'm waiting . . . very impatiently for the next Light Series book to be published. Thank you, Jen, for sharing your amazing talent with the world!
This story starts slightly before the ending of the first. I do think you need to read the first before reading this one so you have a full understanding of who sentients are and a grasp of the characters, especially Christian. This is important, for Christian especially, since we see from where he starts to where he ends up in this book. We do see things through one POV, Nicole. It is her and Christian's journey in this book and many of the lessons learned in this book apply to everyone. How we perceive ourselves in relation to others. How we accept ourselves in the face of feeling inadequate. How to find ourselves in the flurry of other people's opinions. How we don't often look around and see that just about everyone else feels the same way.
As I stated, I will not reveal too much in case you haven't read the first just yet. I will tell you that I give this book 4 stars and recommend it to those that loved the first book and PNR lovers as well. :)
While I was initially disappointed that this wasn't a continuation of Lily's story, it didn't last long. I found myself drawn to Nicole almost right away, although maybe not quite as much a Lily! This is a much lighter read...not quite as action packed as Seers. But I was completely okay with that! And it did have twists & turns of its own.
What I really loved about this book though was Christian, which took me completely by surprise. While I didn't really dislike him is Seers, he definitely wasn't my favorite character. His journey in Whisper is one of self-discovery & letting go of the past & I suppose you could say that I was proud of him in the end! I was happy to take a character that I really didn't have great feelings about in the first book & learn to love him.
This was great & quick read. Finished it in one afternoon. It drew me in & I just couldn't put it down! I would definitely recommend it! I can't wait to see where book three takes my favorite group of Sentients!
I won this as a Goodreads First Read Giveaway, but I still have not gotten my giveaway. I am extremely disappointed that apparently the author, Jennifer, and the publisher do not feel like they need to follow through with her promise of a giveaway, and in their not responding to multiple attempts on my and Goodreads’ part asking them to honor their promise.
I won it on Nov 1, so it's been over 6 months of waiting and trying. I was certainly disappointed, since the odds were so few to win this (1 out of 1102), I'm a fan of YA paranormal and romance, and this one looked like a good one. Goodreads has such a nice giveaway program (I’ve certainly taken advantage of it a lot), but this is the first time this has happened.
My only recourse is to post a comment or review to put it out there so you know, and Goodreads has blocked her from promising any more giveaways.
A fantastic follow up to Seers of Light! It was so fun to "visit" with recognizable faces, as well as meet new ones.
Nicole is such a strong character; it thrilled me to see her grow more confident in her own "gifts". Christian evolved so much from the man we saw in Seers and it made ME happy to see him make peace with himself.
These two are fantastic together. Another great pairing in this series that I'm totally in love with.
It's another great book from Jen! I could easily envision everything playing out- from plot to characters. My only "complaint" is- I wanted more, but I guess that's not such a bad thing ;)
*May contain spoilers from Seers of Light* Whisper of Light was just a good as Seers of Light. We learn more about Nick would was mentioned briefly in Seers of Light. I really like her character she was completely different from Lily. Nick has so she must overcome and I felt for her time she was ready to cry. I think I did her crying for her. Well Lily picked William which means I got Christian but Christian is more interested in Nick. I’m a little heartbroken that he’s not into me but that is okay Nick needs someone to cheer her up more than I do. This book really played with my emotions I felt happiness and sadness when Nick felt it. I was also mad at soo many characters including my Christian. I am so happy that everything worked out for the best for the characters in this novel and I can’t wait to see what Jennifer has in store her readers.
