It's picnic time, but Biscuit isn't invited! Do Biscuit and his puppy friend, Puddles, really have to go play in the yard while the kids eat all the picnic food?
Any child who has ever longed to join in a forbidden party will relish the outcome of Biscuit's newest adventure in this warm and humorous picture book.
Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
SUPER FAST REVIEW: So part of me feels a little silly being a 19 year old giving all of these 4 and 5 star ratings but I can’t help it, these books are so fun and cute! This one is particularly funny and adorable. I loved the artwork as always and the story’s a lot of fun! I also loved seeing all these animals playing together! Super fun! A cute recommended read!
The little girl (why does she not deserve a name?!?!) and her friends bring their puppies along on a picnic and are somehow surprised that they are disruptive.
The book ends with the puppies eating chocolate cake, which is generally considered a BAD THING and a poor example to model for young readers.
Prose: Modern Fantasy Biscuit decides to have a picnic of his own, including some other animals as well. The owners and the dog reconnect at the end. Meant for younger children or early readers. Could be used in a lesson prior to a class picnic.
Biscuit's Picnic a friendly book for children. It is simple to read so the children will follow along easily. This book is definitely for beginners because it is very easy to follow. This story does not even have a plot for children to keep up with so it makes it perfect for beginning readers.
Each page in this book is either a full page spread or a single page picture. The edges of the pages are faded out to give it character. There are no gutters on the pages, but instead the words are in a white space. The words are really large, which also makes it easier for the reader to follow along with his/her finger. Each picture is also very engaging and it corresponds to the text. Overall I would recommend this book for a reader who is just starting to get into books.
Another good example of a somewhat predictable book (because it's a series and still used somewhat repetitive words) that has an actual story line. I would use books like these as independent readers or a read aloud at the beginning of kindergarten so they know what books they might begin to read by the end of the year.
