STARFLEET CORPS OF ENGINEERS Concluding the all-new trilogy that tells the origin of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers! The U.S.S. da Vinci's cultural specialist, Carol Abramowitz, has always had trouble with first-contact missions, so when she expresses her concerns about dealing with the alien race the da Vinci has rescued, Captain Montgomery Scott tells her a story from the S.C.E.'s past....A century before the heyday of the da Vinci, an engineering accident on an experimental Kelvan ship sent Scotty and an S.C.E. team led by his old friend Commander Mahmud al-Khaled into uncharted space. When a group of hostile aliens demands that they leave or face the consequences, the S.C.E. must work against the clock to repair the ship or face destruction!

About the author

Dayton Ward

110 books316 followers
Dayton is a software developer, having become a slave to Corporate America after spending eleven years in the U.S. Marine Corps. When asked, he’ll tell you that he left home and joined the military soon after high school because he’d grown tired of people telling him what to do all the time.

Ask him sometime how well that worked out.

In addition to the numerous credits he shares with friend and co-writer Kevin Dilmore, he is the author of the Star Trek novels In the Name of Honor and Open Secrets, the science fiction novels The Last World War and The Genesis Protocol, and short stories which have appeared in the first three Star Trek: Strange New Worlds anthologies, the Yard Dog Press anthology Houston, We’ve Got Bubbas, Kansas City Voices Magazine and the Star Trek: New Frontier anthology No Limits. Though he currently lives in Kansas City with wife Michi and daughters Addison and Erin, Dayton is a Florida native and still maintains a torrid long-distance romance with his beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Best of the trilogy, but that’s not saying much.

Star Trek: S. C. E.: #19 Foundations, Part 3 by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore This is definitely the best part of the Foundations-trilogy which sheds light why the SCE-teams also contain cultural specialists, linguists etc.

Scotty again remininsces about a past mission where the SCE-team was confronted with a sudden first contact situation which easily could have gone wrong and got not only the team killed but also turned an alien species into an enemy of the Federation.

A much more straight-forward story without too much technobabble and repetitions. Just hope there'll be other stories with Mahmud al-Khaleed - and I hope the next parts will refocus on the crew of the da Vinci.

The end of the SCE origin trilogy is a good one. I had been curious to see what became of the Kelvans from "By Any Other Name" and this movie-era tale is a fun check on their progress. Ward and Dilmore are clearly fans of the original Star Trek TV series and manage to tell a good story without it devolving into continuity porn.

The conclusion of the trilogy. The Da Vinci is still helping the aliens. Scotty decides to tell them a story about when he worked with aliens. It's quite an engaging tale about how a new form of warp drive was created. A good read.
