This series of graphic novels geared toward younger readers covers the adventures that a group of friends has together. But not just any group of friends-- these are legendary monsters in their childhood: Frankenstein, Dracula, Igor, the Invisible Man (Boy), among others. The stories are strong on teamwork and friendship, although the dialog between the friends can be disjointed and the action hard to follow at times. The computer-generated illustrations are mediocre, but they are full color and kids who enjoy video games will find them engaging.
One interesting tidbit-- while most of these monsters are from Western culture, "New Monster at School" introduces Kitsune, a fox-like character from Japanese folklore.
While the plotlines are average at best, the backmatter in each book is notable: in addition to a glossary, websites, and tidbits about how the "grown-up" versions of these monsters became popular, there are discussion questions and writing prompts.
Between the graphic novel format and the monster appeal, these books won't spend too much time on the shelf.
