Amanda Stevens kicks off the Texas Confidential miniseries with "The Bodyguard's Assignment." Reporter Grace Drummond is on to the scoop of her life when she witnesses a murder. All she wants is to get herself and her mother into hiding. The only thing stopping her is Texas Confidential agent Brady Morgan. They were once in love, until Grace betrayed him. With so much on the line, can she trust him not to betray her?

In my reviews of her "Gallagher Justice" series earlier this year, I said that the books were rich in story and characters while not quite as page-turning as her other books. "The Bodyguard's Assignment" has the opposite problem. This is a very fast paced tale. It is also the most shallow book I've ever read from Stevens. It's all action and light on the characters and story. The plot is almost nonexistent. They think they're safe, a sudden threat proves the villains have caught up with them, and they run. Repeat that about ten times and you have the story. There are no plot twists, not even any real plot developments. Safety, surprise, more running. That's it. In those quiet moments they share stories about their pasts, which accounts for some development of the romantic angle. There is no development of the intrigue element. The characters make no real attempt to solve it, more eager to banter about their relationship when they're not running. The romance receives some attention. The mystery is barely there.

"The Bodyguard's Assignment" also falls short as the first book of this miniseries. The Texas Confidential agency is barely defined and the other agents blur together. The secretary made more of an impact than any of the agents. I was also unsatisfied with the ending. The details of the conclusion and the happy ending open up some unanswered questions and some issues that aren't entirely credible.

I can't say this is a bad book because it held my attention throughout. I've also read all of Stevens' books except for a couple of Intimate Moments and this is the most unsatisfied I've been in one of them in years. It was enjoyable but I wanted a meatier story with more depth. I once compared one of Stevens' books to a roller coaster ride. "The Bodyguard's Assignment" is the ultimate roller coaster ride. It's exciting while it lasts but the effect doesn't last long once it's over. A fun, but instantly forgettable story.

When we turned in our marriage license in 2001, the state of Mississippi gave us a garbage bag full of cleaning supplies, condoms, beauty supplies and other toiletries, and this book.

I have dutifully held on to it for the last seventeen years; who knows what harm may befall my marriage should I lose this state-sanctioned marital aid.

As far as the actual story goes, nice hurt/comfort, nice tension between the male and female protagonists, and a genuine mystery as to who is betraying them. As far as Harlequins go, this one is perfectly fine.

Quick, simple read. There was mystery, action, and rekindled love. I liked it and will follow the series

3.5/5 STARS! This was actually pretty great. Action packed plot & a realistic romance. The communication between the characters was perfect. Really a fun read.

I really enjoyed this fast pace story. It had a lot of action, the suspense kept me holding my breath, and the romance was sweet.

Grace was a reporter, and was hiding out in a warehouse to get a big story. Grace knew a drug deal was going down, but it wasn't just any drug deal, it was a meeting between the two big drug lords. She knew if she could record it, she could bring them both down. A person was killed that night, and grace was caught inside the warehouse after they set the place on fire. The Drug lords was onto her, and would do anything to get that tape from Grace, and silence her forever. Grace was on the run after she escaped the fire. She had no place to go.

Brady was sent to protect Grace, and keep her safe until she could testify. The two had a past. They were lovers once, and the chemistry was still simmering between them. They had broke up because of broken trust. Can the two forgive one another, and learn to trust again?

They couldn't trust anyone but each other. They didn't know who was on the drug lords payroll. Each safe house they stayed at, was compromised, and sent the two on the run again. If you enjoy a book with lots of action, then you will love this one.

Here is a small sample taking out of chapter 13 - "I didn't even touch it yet!" she said impatiently. "Yes you did. You touched it plenty. I'm good to go. Let's just get some rest." "Oh, for heaven's sake," she said in exasperation. "How can you have survived everything you've been through in the last couple of days and be such a baby about this?" "Because you're making it worse," Brady said darkly. "My arm felt fine until you started messing with it." "Just hold still." Grace, cotton ball poised in her hand, rolled her eyes skyward. Wasn't that just like a man? Stoic through flying bullets, mountain lions, and assassins, but try putting a little medicine on a injury and they acted like two year olds. It amused her a little to realize that Brady Morgan - Cop, Cowboy, undercover agent - was no exception.

On vacation to the outer banks - what else would you do but buy books?!?!? One from a used book store. Starting out good so far...

Enjoyable read. Not as much a romance, which was nice, and yet had its moments. If you want some action along with romance, this might be for you.

Grace was one of those heroines who was way too stupid to live.
