In India, where vegetarianism is a way of life, food and its preparation assume the aspect of a spiritual discipline. "The Hare Krishna Book of Vegetarian Cooking" demonstrates that meals without meat can be both tasty and exciting. The delightful variety of gourmet dishes in this collection should inspire anyone interested in adopting a vegetarian lifestyle.
His Divine Grace Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (अभय चरणारविन्द भक्तिवेदान्त स्वामी प्रभुपाद)was born as Abhay Charan De on 1 September 1896 in Calcutta, India.
He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a prominent devotional scholar and the founder of sixty-four branches of Gaudiya Mathas (Vedic institutes), liked this educated young man and convinced him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge in the Western world. Srila Prabhupada became his student, and eleven years later (1933) at Allahabad, he became his formally initiated disciple.
At their first meeting, in 1922, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura requested Srila Prabhupada to broadcast Vedic knowledge through the English language. In the years that followed, Srila Prabhupada wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita and in 1944, without assistance, started an English fortnightly magazine.
In the last ten years of his life, in spite of his advanced age, Srila Prabhupada circled the globe twelve times on lecture tours that have took him to six continents. In spite of such a vigorous schedule, Srila Prabhupada continued to write prolifically. His writings constitute a veritable library of Vedic philosophy, religion, literature and culture.
Great and easy recipes for Vedic cooking, with short explanation of balanced menu’s, herbs and usage, rice-dishes, dahls, savouries and sweets. Recipes are vegetarian, mostly GF and easy to make at home (no fancy things). Read together with the dal-cookbook.
I had read about this book years ago, but then struggled to find out what it was called again for nearly a decade! I eventually discovered it by chance earlier this year whilst reading about the actress Hayley Mills (who provides the forward for this book). The Hare Krishna Book of Vegetarian Cooking is a wonderfully presented and beautiful vegetarian book of Indian recipes. It contains much interesting information, especially about a balanced and nutritious vegetarian diet. The recipes are many and contain a good variety - soups and stews, rice dishes, breakfasts, beverages. There are also nice accompanying photographs of prepared dishes. I'm very glad I finally found this gem of a book.
I love Indian food. I love cooking and reading cookbooks. I love eating vegetarian food.
So what's not to love about this cookbook?
When I bought this (used, thankfully), I didn't realize that strict Hindus sometimes shun garlic, as it "fuels impure desires and thoughts." Apparently, Hare Krishna devotees avoid it all the time. I practically live on garlic (I adore it), and while the photos are appetizing, I just can't handle using a cookbook full of recipes with nary a clove in sight.
I also can't handle the dairy-intensity of these recipes. Too much milk and ghee for this reporter.
The best recipes for simple, honest, wholesome dhals. Every recipe is soooo easy and soooo tasty. Love the fact that the recipes are garlic and onion free. Great for someone learning to cook Vegetarian Indian food - one of our copies that we keep at our cafe is absolutely thrashed!
The first book I've ever owned on Vegetarian cooking & the book that started my journey towards Veganism. This book is of the highest quality & shows how to prepare traditional Lacto-Vegetarian dishes in an authentic Indian manner in sync with the philosophy of Brahminism & in keeping with a Sattvic diet. Most oglf the recipes can be adapted for Veganism as well but are presented here in a Lacto-Vegetarian format in keeping with the religious & cultural nature of the book. Read this book if you're considering Hinduism, read this book if you're considering Buddhism, read this book if you take Yoga & need a diet that suits that lifestyle, read this book if you're a vegetarian but most importantly read this book. An excellent, high quality, well presented masterful work.
