I love Claudia’s YouTube channel. The recipes I’ve made have been wonderful, so I was happy when she announced her cookbook. It has all my favorite recipes and tons I had saved. And it’s full of beautiful pictures of the food, and yes, of the author. That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who follows her. Her smiling face and sense of style are part of her appeal. It’s a lovely cookbook. I look forward to trying more of her recipes, this time without having to keep pausing the videos.
I really like the food options, but each one ends up coming out too watery, too sweet, or too salty… At first I thought it was a me problem, but after making around 20 recipes and there being consistent issues, I think it’s just one of those cookbooks that you have to take inspiration from and then tweak to make your own. Instructions are often unclear. For example, in the arroz con leche, she doesn’t specify whether to keep the pot lid on or off at any point. I used about half the amount of milk that she said to use, and it was the perfect amount. She says her mole is the simplified version, but it’s really missing a lot of the complexity from the missing ingredients. Don’t try the piña colada agua fresca, I made it for a party and it tasted sour and nasty.
A solid cookbook with accessible recipes for home cooks of all levels. I’ll definitely be purchasing a physical of this for my shelves because the recipes are just that good.
However.
Pictures of each recipe are hit and miss, thus only 4 stars. Likewise, the author is in…a lot..of the pictures that are actually included and, well, I know what the author looks like. I don’t know what the food always looks like.
And now for the best part...the review... (I bet you just read that in Claudia's voice!) This white gal is VERY pleased with this cookbook. I've made a few recipes from her youtube and had very rave reviews from my very Mexican husband, lol. I love the idea of having a hard copy of the cookbook so I don't have to always pause a video.
This is one of the authentic Mexican recipes that I have found. These recipes are almost the same as my mom used to make growing up and now I can learn how to make them myself too. Highly recommend for anyone one who wants to cook traditional Mexican recipes.
