I gave all of the Time-Life Art series a 5 star because they were my introduction to the world of art. I highly recommend them to children who are very interested in art. I spent many late nights devouring the series. Perfect for young inquiring minds.
Excellent biography of the painter, and a surprising amount of info on Degas and other impressionists. I learned a lot I didn't know. As always in this series, to me at least, the history is equally important. I always enjoy learning about the life AND times of these characters. Some of the discussion about the painter's technique was hard to understand. But the details of the famous paintings, and the small sketches and letters are always intriguing.
I always enjoy reading about artists during this period of French painting, and Manet is one of my favorite artists. I love his bold clean shapes and shiny lustre in some of his paintings. This book was well-written, very readable (art books can sometimes be weird and unreadable) with some interesting and novel (to me) insights.
