Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Being a huge fan of the show, I wanted to see how the original writing started and how the show writers followed and deviated from the comics. My dislikes were that the comics are much more crude, crass, and unnecessarily violent. I did like the change in relationships and how people worked together differently, and the comics have a different creepiness feel than you get watching it on TV. Overall, I prefer the show, and probably will not finish out the comic book series.

Comic format flows fast. Almost begs me to imagine frames in between the frames, or at least pause the break-neck speed with which I devour these Omnibuses.
Possibly my fav arc of the show and the comic! An arc comprised of mini-arcs where the object isn't to survive, or against what odds, but why? Not very specific, I know. Especially since the comic's been hammering home those themes since the beginning.
A better analysis might suggest the honing of a purpose (Trip to DC to stop the horde) provides a much needed sense of stakes and narrative drive that was missing until now.

The introduction of great new characters and a mission that furthers the plot. A bit uneven, and overall not quite as breakneck paced as volume 2, but really enjoyable nonetheless.

The Walking Dead Omnibus, Volume 3 by Robert Kirkman collects Volumes 9-12 (#49-72). After the prison is destroyed and the group is scattered, Rick and Carl attempt to find shelter in a nearby town and reunite with surviving group members. Rick's physical and mental state begins to unravel, while Carl grows more independent and apathetic. They eventually manage to reunite with the other survivors; however, three new survivors arrive and present an unbelievable opportunity for the group if they join them before they can recover fully. The group is on the road making its way to Washington, D.C., with a scientist, Eugune Porter, who can end the outbreak. Rick is immediately at odds with Abraham over their methods of leading. With Carl in tow, the three travel to Rick's hometown for any supplies left at Rick's police station and come across an old friend in the process. Along the way, Rick finally sees just how far he is willing to go to protect the family he has left.

While Rick and the survivors continue on their way to Washington, D.C., they start to suspect someone in the woods is stalking them. Suddenly, Dale is kidnapped in the night and Rick, Abraham, Michonne and Andrea set out to find this new threat and stop them. But, these survivors may finally see their humanity torn to the last shred with their actions to protect their own. Rick and his group run across a seemingly trustworthy man named Aaron, who escorts them to a large, walled-off community of survivors called the Alexandria Safe-Zone led by Douglas Monroe. It is a welcomed change for the weary survivors, but they soon suspect that it may be too good to be true.

A constant theme throughout the series is that nobody can go through the characters' events without it taking a toll on their psyche. From the first volume, we have people becoming deeply traumatised, losing their grip on reality, or cracking under strain. Even those doing their very best still sometimes need strange ways to vent. This mainly revolves around Rick and Lori's relationship without giving anything away. Several times someone who is keeping up a "mask of sanity" will suddenly let the mask slip, and we see what's underneath it, and it's seldom pretty.

As Nietzsche pointed out in Beyond Good and Evil, this is the point in the series where the heroic character slowly slips into the very same evil they once fought. Issue 71 subtly paints the protagonists with a very creepy and disturbing final line spoken by Rick. However, this was hinted at as far back as the Prison story arc. The Fear the Hunters story arc pushed the group into some seriously dark territory regarding behaviour...and sanity. The character of Rick (and pretty much everyone) is most commonly associated with the notion of "doing what he had to do" to survive. Rick gets distressingly more amoral with each passing issue as he suffers more and more. It makes us question the themes of morality in this sadistic world and allows us to ask whether we should be rooting for these survivors.

- Morgan, you need anything just let us know. We've got food, water... Don't hesitate to ask.

- I'm fine right now, thanks. So you found your wife and son -- I'm so happy for you. That's just amazing. I had high hopes for you, but... I didn't know, y'know?

Aztán egy férfias y'know, y'know? Hogy természetesen hangozzon a párbeszéd, y'know?

Great set of stories. I liked that it went into territory not yet ventured into by the TV series and gave us a peek at what may be coming up.

Overall, books 1, 2 and 3 have enough différences from the series that kept me hooked. Although the characters that get to live (wether they want to or not) or those that are killed off (and Kirkman has one hell of an imagination as to how to kill off a major character in this one `tainted meat` indeed, heh) are different than in the show, it's fun to have that bit of mystery.

Looking forward to getting the 4th Omnibus volume... eventually

Kirkman is nothing short of a genius. I love everything about this series. It delves into all the questions we have about humanity, loss, insanity and post apocalyptic flesh eating zombies. The storyline is wonderful and really makes you question your own humanity in a way I never thought possible. Harrowing and tormenting in some parts. Beautifully gory in others. A must must must read for any zombie or apocalypse lover. They are the greatest horror based graphic novels out there.

Truly great collection. And very glad to have on my Comixlogy account. So read on my Kindle Fire or my Galaxy Player. The Digital edition is very different and only offered during the 100 sale. It is 950 pages long. The hardcover is around 500 pages.
