Bestselling author of American Historical Romance, KAREN KAY is a multi-published author of Native American Historical Romance. She has been praised by reviewers and fans alike for bringing insights into the everyday life of the American Indian culture of the past.
Although there are other authors who write under the pen name of Karen Kay, this author's books concern only Historical Native American Romance.
As Reviewer, Suzanne Tucker, once wrote, “Ms. Kay never fails to capture the pride, the passion and the spirit of the American Indian…"
KAREN KAY's great grandmother was Choctaw, and she is adopted Blackfeet. Ms. Kay is honored to be able to write about the rich culture of a people who gave this country so much.
“With the power of romance, I hope to bring about an awareness of the American Indian’s concept of honor, and what it meant to live as free men and free women. There are some things that should never be forgotten.”
I would say that this is a pretty typical read by Karen Kay, but that's not at all to say it's a bad thing. In fact, I was surprised by how little there actually was about The Lost Clan and the mythical background of everything, as that's actually what made me hesitant about this series beforehand. Like...I was expecting it to be way more plot-heavy than it was on this point, but instead it ended up being just a very sweet story about the romantic understanding between two people, and how their love drives them to survive anything together.
The legend part was just really present at the beginning and end of the story, kind of as background for what the hero, Swift Hawk's quest was.
All in all, I would say that I definitely liked this story a lot, and can see myself re-reading it sometime, perhaps. A nice, lovely, cozy read, for sure!
The Angel and the Warrior, book one in the Lost Clan series by Karen Kay, has two storylines that merge together. One stream has Angelina and her brother Julian running from the law in an attempt to protect Angelina from using a gun in self-defense. The second stream involves a Cheyanne native Swift Hawk, who is cursed to a life in the mists and is given one chance to break the curse and enjoy the pleasures of the temporal world. As the viewer can guess, Swift Hawk needs Angelina to return himself and his clan to experiencing physical pleasure, and Angelina needs the warrior Swift Hawk to protect her from the law.
Karen Kay revolves the tale around the customs and traditions of the tribes of the Native American Indian, which she told in a mindful manner that encourages readers to have respect for their culture. Though Angelina and Hawk's affair was intended to be scandalous, it was written in a way that the reader finds their union natural and meant to happen. Angelina's fearless nature is a breath of fresh air, and Swift Hawk's open mindedness about the American woman is equally refreshing. The author creates no conflict as she pairs an independent woman with a humble man, who listens to his female counterpart and does not try to dominate her.
The author brings together spirituality, mysticism, and the physical pleasure of mating. The story is a reflection of Beauty and the Beast as Hawk needs to find true love to break the spell that is holding him and his clan entrapped, and Angelina needs the strength and bravery of Hawk to keep her safe. Kay's novel is a sweet story, a timeless tale about a man and woman who save each other.
Angel and her brother were on the run from bounty hunters when they came across some people who could help keep them hidden. This group of people were traveling the Santa Fe Trail heading toward Santa Fe, Just where they wanted to go to start their lives over and get away from the bounty hunters and the troubles of their past that keeps catching up to them.
Swift Hawk tells his best friend Red Fox about the vision that he had while he was on his quest. This vision was of a beautiful white woman who looked like an angel, she would help him break the curse that has been on his people for many moons.
Swift Hawk and Angel meet, but she is certainly not the angel his quest showed him she was. Angel was bossy to her brother and other males, she was sarcastic and demanding and used vulgar language. she used her womanly ways o tease and persuade men to get what she wanted. All of these traits went against what Swift Hawk wanted in a woman, but he had to see where this would go since his quest showed him she was the one that could break the curse.
This book was set in the 1800's and I love these types of historical romances that are filled with adventure in the wild west with a little romance tossed in. Great story and would read another from this author.
There are two books by Karen Kay with the title "The Angel and the Warrior". I haven't read the first one - released a few years ago - but judging from the cover blurb both books are slightly different.
This edition tells two stories, the first one is about Swift Hawk, who is cursed to a life in the mists -together with his clan- and has one chance to break this curse and return to the earth. The second features Angelina and her brother Julian, who are on the run from the law, since Angelina fired a weapon in self-defense. Both storylines intervine, when Swift Hawk agrees to help Angelina (and inevitably falls in love with her).
I won't spoiler the mystery of the curse; I found it unique, to add a fantasy element in the world of North America in 1816 and the customs and traditions of American Indians were told in a respectful and non-clichée way. Truthfully, after seeing the sexy but cheesy cover, I was prepared to read a romanticized and kitschy novel, but I got an enganging plot, interesting characters and a lovely romance (<--- almost sweet, no insta-lust here).
My only critique would be, that it was kinda weird that Angelina was calling Swift Hawk "Swift Hawk" in intimate moments, wouldn't just "Hawk" be more familiar/closer? Maybe it's just me, double names are not for me ;)
It was my first novel by Karen Kay and it certainly won't be my last!
Siiigh. I could read historical romances forever. Even if they're not wonderful, I still love everything about them. A piece of history, usually a scandalous love affair, and some steamy paragraphs, mmm. Oh, sorry, don't mind the drool.
Ever since I read Warrior Moon by Sara Orwig, I've loved Native American fiction. Something about their culture really intrigues me. Same with Indian culture as well. It's just so exotic, completely different from my own "normal". But I digress.
The story is told by both Swift Hawk and Angelia, or "Angel" (Gods, how I despise that name!)
I really enjoy reading historical romances with Native American characters that feel authentic because I'll admit to being rather ignorant about this culture so I love reading about it. The Angel and The Warrior is a wonderful example of a book that can blend spirituality and mysticism without making it seem totally unrealistic or too cheesy.
Angelia (Angel) is a great heroine because she doesn't allow herself to be dictated by the opinions and prejudices of other people. She's a bit headstrong, but she needs that determination and fearlessness to get herself and her brother out of the predicament they find themselves in. Swift Hawk was a really interesting character. He is part of a cursed tribe that sends young men of the tribe out to try and break the curse. Swift Hawk is completely focused on breaking the curse and freeing his tribe when he meets Angel. Then he must decide whether this bewildering woman is a distraction from his responsibilities or the answer to all of his problems.
Angel and Swift Hawk have an immediate connection, despite the complications and obstacles that face them. This is an enjoyable romance with a great back story that is steeped in Native American culture. I'll be looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.
*I received a review copy from the publisher, via NetGalley, for my honest opinion. Thank you!
This book was so good it starts off with two different timelines that submerged intooneone is of a Native American and the other is a Caucasian woman named Julia who is running from the law with her brother well she thinks she needs to run from the law and she does on the wagon train as he pretends to be a scout. There comes a point in time where they are in need of help and this is win they get help from the Native American I think his name is blaze runner I have a terrible memory in any event. I love Karen case writing style she tells a story about two people not about the Indian and not about a white woman but two people falling in love and ask they are things in the story that let you know from where they come she doesn’t make that a primary plot point even though in 1816 it was a humongous deal but white women to marry Native American Man. I find her books to be so in grossing and this one was no different and it is a book I highly recommend and when people ask if I know of a great historical book to read it seems to always be Karen Kay’s books or at least very often it is. Do you self a favor and read this book!
I found this book while browsing NetGalley and requested a copy after the cover, and then the description, intrigued me. Luckily the publisher granted my request, because while reading THE ANGEL and the WARRIOR, I was reminded of the 'old school' romances that I used to indulge in years and years ago. It has that pure romance feel to it, bringing to mind greats such as Johanna Lindsey, Diana Gabaldon, and Cassie Edwards. The painstakingly researched history is immersive and captivating. I'll definitely be looking out for more by Karen Kay, and in particular, this Lost Clan series!
THE ANGEL and the WARRIOR: "Many centuries ago, a village killed the children of the Thunder god. For their crime the Creator banished them to live a half existence in the land of shadows, neither dead nor alive. But once in a generation, a brave is given the opportunity to save his clan."
Swift Hawk's tribe has been under a curse that has not been able to be broken. The Swift has visions lead him to Angelia. He feels she is the key to breaking the curse. For some reason it is even hard to write a review, it was too slow, not enough passion. The characters were truly not developed to full potential. I do not recommend this book unfortunately.
I really enjoyed this first book in the series. I loved Swift Hawk and Angelina's story. A very interesting read that captivated me. I look forward to more books in the series.
I enjoy reading this author’s books. She has a great knowledge of the Native Americans. It is very intriguing to learn about the ways of the Native Americans and Karen Kay does a great job writing about them. If you like romance and mystery you need to get this book!
An interesting read. I feel too much of the excitement was stuffed into the conclusion, and not spread out very well. Also, I feel there was a hurried explanation of how the curse was ended, and how Jullian and Angelia were excused from being wanted.

I love a sun, sex and cowboy/indian story and this one was a delightful read. Steamy, romantic and I didn't want to put the book down at night. Loved it
