A collection of short horror stories - why am I forever addicted to these?

It's divided into two parts: past master, with most of the usual suspects, Lovecraft for instance, mostly stories you've seen by masters you revere. And one by Sir Winston Churchill, who not only never surrendered, but wrote a bit before that whole global cataclysm thing. "Man Overboard" wasn't sensational - it has the feel of an old Conan illustrated short - but I was pleased to read Winny doing occult fiction no less.

The second half which is new/newer writers. Like Karl Edward Wagner, who wrote 2 of my all time favourite short horror stories, including my newest fave, "Sticks", found here. A wonderful gift for lovers of the cthulu mythos. I wet my pants. Partly from fear, but mostly I was just that giddy that it was sooo good.

The best? Toughy. Some I've read before, elsewhere. And a lot are clunkers, frankly. But the gems are so brilliant, you don't begrudge the wade through tedium to find them. The best, then, was "If Damon Comes" by Charles L Grant. Creepy and flawless. I read it late at night in bed. Thank God my wife was still awake next to me. "Hold me - baby I'm scared!"

Some stories were good, others not so good, but not very many were truly memorable. It took me four years reading on and off to finish because horror is not at all my thing; I happened to get this book for free and thought I'd try something new. A few that stood out to me were Hop Frog, Pickman's Model (this was probably the only one I found truly scary as opposed to creepy, disgusting, strange, etc.), Bianca's Hands, and The Doll.

Honestly, a bit of a bummer. There were a few really good ones in there, but most were meh at best.
