My review for all of these books in this series is the same.
Time-Life has once again done an outstanding job putting together a series. From cover to cover they are thoughtful, beautiful books. I'm starting to sound generic, but it's true. I'm a DK fan, I like white backgrounds and side notes with clear sections for every subject. This series has none of that. What they do have is an old book feel. Timeless artwork, thoroughness, and very well written makes these a must on my occult/paranormal bookshelf at home. I've been collecting the series slowly over several years and still have a few books to go. I refuse to go on amazon and buy them. It's all in the hunt for me. There is no subject they have left untouched. I highly recommend them.
That's it! That was my last book that I own in the series, altogether twelve. It was a joy to read them all and this was again a pleasure. Gripping stories from allover the world, beautiful huge illustrations, fantastic and mythical characters. It was awesome and I'll truly miss this series. This is maybe old, but it's timeless and will forever be a collection of the most legendary stories.
Do you believe in love? Try this book and learn all about the lore that is connected. Always great info and illustrations with this companies great books.
Reading this on the week of Valentine's Day was enjoyable. Myths and legends surrounding love. This book had a variety of tales from: ancient Greece, China, India, Germany, Arabia, ancient Mexico, Spain, Italy, Armenia, Scotland, Japan, France, Polynesia, and Tibet.
One introduction that can help conjure the spirit of the storytelling is this first sentence. "In a lost century, under a younger sun, there flourished in the arid valley of Mexico the great Aztec city of Tenochtitlan." Poetic prose.
The other thing I liked about this book was that the stories were broken down into three sections: Destiny's Playthings (stories of the Gods and Fate toying with mortals); Blighted Passions (stories of the power of love and when things can go awry); and True Love Triumphant (stories of love winning out over great adversity).
All in all, an enjoyable read with rich vocabulary, and gorgeous paintings and illustrations.
As you might be able to guess, the theme of this volume are love stories, or trysts, which intersect with the macabre, the divine, or magic. Because of that a lot of the stories are very similar Boy A sees Girl B (or vice versa), falls in love, and either connives to win the other’s love, or the pair are in love but then separated for some reason. The denouement being the pair end up together, if not in this life, then the next. The art is superb as always, perfectly complimenting the stories with lush touching material.
Love stories are ubiquitous. Tales from all over the world are here. From Heroic India, to Arthurian Legend, to Ancient Greece, to Aztec times, to Imperial China, to old Persia. Familiar ones such as the story of Narcissus to wild and odd tales like The Aztec’s Couple Reunion in Flames. Every story here is worth a gander. Volume seventeen here of The Enchanted World series is a treasure.
