Jack Whyte is an author and writer born and raised in Scotland, but has been living in western Canada since 1967, and in Kelowna, British Columbia, since 1996.

Whyte's major work to date is the A Dream of Eagles series (as it is titled in Canada, but known as The Camulod Chronicles in the United States and elsewhere). This series of historical novels presents the tale of King Arthur set against the backdrop of Roman Britain. This retelling of the popular legend eschews the use of magic (as in T. H. White’s The Sword in the Stone) to explain Arthur’s ascent to power and instead relies on the historical condition (with some artistic license) of post-Roman Britain to support the theory that Arthur was meant to counter the anarchy left by the Roman departure from Britain in 410 AD and the subsequent colonization and invasion of Britain by various peoples from Northwestern Europe, including the Saxons, Jutes, Franks, and Angles). Whyte incorporates both traditional Arthurian names, places and events (albeit in gaelic or Latin form) as well as the names of various historical figures that have been suggested as being the possible basis for the original King Arthur legend. The tacit implication is that Whyte's version of history is the true story that has become distorted over time to become the legend and stories of magic that we know today.

Jack Whyte served as the official bard of The Calgary Highlanders and performed several tracks of poetry and song on the 1990 recording by the Regimental Pipes and Drums of The Calgary Highlanders entitled Eighty Years of Glory: The Regimental Pipes, Drums and Bard of The Calgary Highlanders.

In questo capitolo della saga di White seguiamo le vicende di Uther Pendragon, dalla sua nascita fino alla sua incoronazione come re. Egli cresce insieme al cugino Caio Britannico, meglio conosciuto come Merlino. La loro infanzia trascorrere tra Tir Mahnra, città natale del padre di Uther e Camelot, dove invece è nata la madre. I due luoghi non potrebbero essere più diversi: il primo, rude e selvaggio, in cui l'ordine e la disciplina dei soldati viene sempre in primo piano, e dove le stagioni sono dominati dal freddo e dal buio. Camelot invece è una città più moderna, le case sono calde e confortevoli, e qui Uther imparerà il valore della cultura. Questi due luoghi, di luce e ombre, sembrano rispecchiare perfettamente il carattere del futuro re, che diverrà si un grande e valoroso cavaliere, ma avrà in sé anche quel furore e quella parte selvaggia che lo caratterizzerà in ogni sua azione e battaglia, contribuendo a plasmarne il mito.

Tristemente non necessario. Le nuove sfaccettature della storia non sono particolarmente fondamentali e si intuiscono dopo mezzo paragrafo, peccato si protraggono per tutto il volume (inglese, quindi due per l'italiano). Tra l'altro la conferma dell'unica cosa davvero importante da sapere la si trova all'inizio del successivo. Tempo perso.

Primo libro della linea Uther.
Filone parallelo alla storia principale, dove vengono ricalcati i principali eventi della storia sotto l'ottica esclusiva di Uther.
Nel complesso un buon libro, utile per chiarire l'ascesa al trono del Re di Cambria.

7^ capitolo. Ho dato una valutazione media perché,sebbene sia scritto con il solito stile interessante e avvincente, non ha saputo prendermi come gli altri. Credo perché il romanzo è incentrato sulla storia di Uther, perciò si fanno dei passi indietro e non avanti...anche se si viene a conoscenza di ulteriori argomenti che arricchiscono l'intreccio.
