Tedd grew up with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida.
He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, NO JUMPING ON THE BED!.
He and his family now live in Elmira. His second son, William, now stars in NO MORE WATER IN THE TUB!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published over 50 books as author and illustrator.
Buzz and Fly Guy are back for another adventure, tapping into their superhero qualities. Buzz shares with his best friend, Fly Guy, that he’s made a superhero comic book about them. Both end up being the same size in this story, but are captured by pirates. Through a series of heroic feats, Buzz Boy and Fly Guy are able to battle against the pirates and get themselves out of a dragon’s lair, which was sure to cause them much grief. By the end, Buzz and Fly Guy realise just how lucky they are to be a team, today and every day!
Review: This was my first Fly Guy book and I was impressed by how it played with form, with a “book within a book” structure of Buzz reading the comic he wrote. I loved how Buzz’s comic featured a slightly sketchier art style and the pages split into the panel form of a classic comic. The story had great kid logic, changing on a dime with twists and turns. I would definitely recommend it to students!
Brief Summary: Buzz writes a comic about he and his pet fly’s superhero alter egos, The Amazing Adventures of Buzz Boy and Fly Guy,. As Buzz reads the comic aloud we see that Fly Guy has grown to Buzz’s size and can talk. The duo is captured by pirates and have to use their superstrength to wrangle a dragon and escape.
Categories/Genres Justification: This is a fictional easer reader book, with a longer length and slightly advanced reading level from a picture book but still full color illustration.

1. Buzz Boy and Fly Guy is about a boy and a fly who become a dynamic duo! The layout of the story is in comic book form. In the story, Buzz Boy and Fly Guy must battle a band of pirates and a dragon. Throughout the story, the reader is left wondering whether or not they will defeat their enemies and save their home. 2. Personally, I am not a huge fan of graphic novels. Although, I felt like this book was pretty great, I actually enjoyed reading it! I think the layout really helped out. When I think of graphic novels, I think about chaotic pages with alot going on at once. This novel was different! 3. There are other books in the Buzz Boy and Fly Guy series that I would definitely consider adding to my classroom library. 4. One night Buzz said, "I made a book, We are the superheroes." This could be used as a mentor text for writing as the students can make up their own story about Buzz Boy and Fly Guy being superheroes.
Summary: It is about a boy who reads his pet fly a book he created. His book is about him reading his book to his pet fly. He is reduced to the fly's size and the two of them become superheroes.
Characteristics that support the genre: There are large comic-book looking pictures on each page with only 1-2 sentences on each page.
Writing traits: Voice: The book is written as a comic book with the fly being able to talk to the boy. Presentation: This book is presented in a fun and playful way, most of it as a comic book the boy has written. His comic is about them as superheroes fighting dragons and pirates.
Classroom Integration: This book could be used in a lesson where students are creating their own stories.
More than a century ago, Emily Dickinson composed a poem-review on the buzz behind Ted Arnold's cartoonish Buzz Boy and Fly Guy. "I heard a Fly buzz - when I died (465)/(591)" can be found at the following locations/organizations:
This book is so cute! The front cover would attract kiddos so easily with its shiny parts! The illustrations of this book are very cute and the silliness of having a pet fly would make kids fall in love with it! I like how much of the story is in a comic book style. This would get the attention of students who may not love to read so much.
She wasn't quite as fond of this one where Buzz and FG imagine a comic strip version of themselves.
Miss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
I read this book with my 1st grader. She loved the story line and the words were super easy for her to read. I can see this being beneficial to have in classroom, just to spark interest and help students at any reading level.
My male students seem to really enjoy the Fly Guy series, and I'm starting to warm up to them. I do like the friendship between Buzz and Fly Guy because it demonstrates how two seemingly opposite individuals can in fact be friends who share things in common.
Buzz writes a story about his superhero adventures with Fly Guy. I enjoyed reading this with my 7 year old. It has inspired him to write his own adventure short story.
I love Fly Guy. Heck I just love about any Tedd Arnold book. This one is a graphic novel for beginning readers. In this one there are pirates, a dragon, and Fly Guy and Buzz are the same size.
