Bringing together the latest scientific research and cross-cultural data, Dr. Ballentine resolves conflicting views on such controversial issues as the link between modern diet, cancer, and heart disease; the use and misuse of vitamin and mineral supplementation; how much protein is enough; the bran controversy; the "sugar story; " raw vs. cooked; vegetarianism vs. omnivorism; additives and preservatives and much more.
It was written in 1978 so I was super skeptical. Apparently ahead of its time, it has remained up to date. What really got me jazzed were the last three chapters about the mind/body/food connections. Inspired me to sign up for a course in health coaching. It's a text book, so not light reading, but informative if nutrition is your thing.
This book really opened my eyes to how complicated nutrition can be, as well as how individual each person's needs are. It also made me want to shout from the rooftops how important nutrition is to mental health. It seems everyone is "up in arms" about gun control lately when what really would help the most is getting proper nutrition to the mentally ill so that they can be healed and not hurt others. I feel like the author does a really good job explaining things in depth and not from a biased viewpoint.
Gives a pretty comprehensive idea of what good eating habits are, and how to create a balanced diet. There's a lot information, but everyone can learn something useful from it.
