The events of this free short story take place between the events of No Prince Charming and Ren’s story, Crazed Hearts. . It turns out both Ren and Elle had some loose ends they needed to tie up…and that’s what this story is about. It’s not Ren’s happy ever after. That’s in Crazed Hearts.

Bio...
Shiloh Walker has been writing since she was a kid. She fell in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the more...ah...serious vampire stories. She loves reading and writing anything paranormal, anything fantasy, and nearly every kind of romance. Once upon a time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her family in the Midwest.
After reading this short story I had decided to give it only two stars because it seemed so disjointed and had me really confused. Then, after checking on Goodreads, I discovered that this is actually book 2.5 in the Grimm’s Circle series, and I suddenly understood why I felt so lost. See, I wasn’t sure what the point to all the angst was, though it seemed that there was supposed to be a very important one, but because I had no idea what had happened in previous books, the whole thing just seemed like a really bad soap opera.
So, yes, I’m rating this story as I am, based on reading it as a standalone. I’d strongly suggest that, if you haven’t read the first 2 books in the Grimm’s Circle series, you skip I Thought It Was You because there was a lot of tension that really didn’t make sense to me and had me scratching my head wondering what I had missed.
At some point I may look into the first book of the series, but from the few things I could make out from this short story, I’m concerned there might have been some kind of infidelity going on, which is a no-no for me and something I try to avoid in the books I choose to read.
~* 3.5 Stars *~ Ren is still hurting from losing his best friend and century-long occasional lover, Elle, after she and the man she loved, Michael, reunited. That pain is adding stress to the pressure of the darkness that is never far from his mind lately. Leave it to their boss (for lack of a better term) Will to send him back to Elle and Michael to wait for another task that the three Grimm must handle.
Seeing Elle is like salt in a grievous wound, and even her kindness causes pain. As an empath, he knows she feels his pain. As Elle, he knows she'll try to ease it. What surprises him, almost unmans him, is that Michael is surprisingly amenable. And the truth, the one that neither Ren nor Elle can escape, is that both still bear wounds not yet healed, and each needs the other for the love of their friendship and the hope of some peace.
For those unfamiliar with Shiloh Walker's Grimm's Circle series, this is not the place to start to become familiar. This short story is more of a coda on the end of the second book in the series, No Prince Charming, and should in no way be considered a self-contained short story. There almost no explanation of the events in the book preceding it, and little exposition on the world in which it occurs. For those who haven't read that second book, this short story could seem little more than a salacious bit of gratuitous erotica.
In truth, though, it's closure for two people who desperately needed it, and though the focus is on Ren, whose story is up next in the series (yay!), the events are just as important to Elle. Her death was such that it scarred her in ways that aren't important to list here, but with this little tale, those scars were tenderly addressed.
I'm not entirely convinced it was necessary to be handled in this format, though, and I was disappointed that the sole focus was on the sexual scene. The "job" Will sent them on was completely ignored except in passing. It did make this little piece of fiction seem a bit unnecessary and salacious, even to me, who is a fan of this dark and unique series. It wasn't bad, but it isn't enough to draw in new readers - may in fact give them the wrong impression of the series, and it isn't quite enough to entertain beyond the sexuality for those who are familiar. I'd recommend it only for those who are Grimm's Circle fans.
This wasn't remotely interesting to read. I couldn't wait to finish it. It didn't hold my attention. I've read Shiloh's other books and they were much better.
Friendship, separation, and obedience takes on a sensual spin in the short story I Thought It Was You by Shiloh Walker. It is a fairy tale for adults of three hearts that must follow the directive from the “chief” and no longer can be friends with benefits. Who knew guardian angels did these naughty things?
Ren and Elle previous involvements complicate manners as Elle must be with Michael. Ren jealousy a very human quality rears its ugly head and finds it hard to be without Elle. Many years of sharing almost everything from working on guardian assignments with each must come to an end. Everyone has a predetermined mission and that must be carried regardless.
Will Ren be able to close the door to the emotions and moments of intimacies shared with Elle? How will Michael handle this complicated situation of the loose ends Ren has with Elle? Is there a way to make everyone happy?
Ms. Walker has created a short story of wild carnal actions~a menage with angels no less. This is an adult read. The sex scene is well written. Ms. Walker has the technique to bring forth a wonderfully erotic tale but it can't be appreciated in its fullness because there are many broken into pieces making relating, connecting with the characters and story's plot, resolution nearly impossible to grip.
I personally did not find much going on past the sex scenes and light dialogue between characters. This short story is a segment of a series and if read out of sequential order you will not be able to connect the dots to make a coherent tale. I could not develop a relationship with the characters, were they strangers to me. It seemed as if I was little kid peeking into key hole of a closed door after hearing strange sounds. I Thought It Was You is short, fast, naughty read that can be entertaining while waiting to be called next in the nail, hair salon or doctors appointment. The sensual scenes may elevate your blood pressure so maybe it should not be read waiting to see the doctor. :-)
If you like this series mainly for the storyline and characters, you don’t need to read this. This is an unneeded transition between books 2 & 3. At the end of book 2, Michael got the girl and Ren left to go get his own HEA in book 3. This story is barely a scene. Everything ‘important’ in it is or could have been included in the full books. The only reason I can see for this is so the author can write an erotic scene.
The premise for this doesn’t even make sense. Millions of couples out there have gotten closure after a positive breaking up with just a kiss, hug or goodbye note. There’s no need for breakup sex and I can’t see the new boyfriend, fiancé, etc. allowing it, let alone getting involved. Michael never should have. Like I said just and unnecessary erotic scene.
I downloaded this in the mistaken belief that it was a retelling of a traditional fairytale, like those Mercedes Lackey writes. I was assisted to this belief by the words "Grimms Circle" associated with it.
I was surprised and disgusted to find that instead what I had downloaded was pornography, and quite sick, disgusting pornography at that. I do not understand why this kind of filth doesn't carry a warning, or why the writer should want to pass it off as a fairy tale. I'll be sure to avoid this writer like the plague in future, though.
It's a quick read, featuring characters that are apparently prominent in other books of the series. While it doesn't have much depth - it's mostly just a menage scene - it did whet my appetite for more of the series. This is just a segway between storylines, I think. It was good for what it was, but don't expect much from it since it only clocks in around 30-something pages.
There's not much I can say about I Thought It Was You without giving away the entire story. I mean, it's a really short novella and all about character development for Ren. There's a little about Elle, but it's really Ren that we're given tiny hints as to who he is. And I really want to know who Ren is, so I'm off to read Crazed Hearts.
The book preview said it's not Ren's ever after but you have to read another book for that this book is just for the lose ends. As short as it is I didn't get into it I was not impressed . This book was not for me it felt like a left over of something, some books does not stand alone because without reading the series some readers would be lost. I need to read a real good book quick because I feel like I'm in a funk.
A short story about a guardian angel who's hung up on a former lover. The story is set between two full length novels, and if you haven't read either of those stories, then all the turmoil and unrequited love of this story just doesnt' make sense. Plus, without any real backstory, not having read this series before, I got the distinct impression that Elle (here, Cinderella) was a little of a hussy and self-absorbed.
I like the Grimm series. This was a sad one. It hurt to read. :/ This is definitely not a happily ever after. I find Ms. Walker's reinterpretation of the fairy tales to be even more grim than the original Grimm fairy tales.
Poor Ren. Read this book only if you read the others in this series. This is not to be read by itself.
This review will be short and sweet. I was trolling through my Kindle Archives and came across this title and said "Hmmm what's this?" For an answer - it's a hot little novella that did what I think it was supposed to do -- make me want to read the full books!
If you're looking for a quick and spicy read - grab this up! You won't be disappointed!
This novella is not even a half book. Basically, it a menage scene involving the main character, Ren, who seems to be in some emotional crisis. The sexual healing does not provide his HEA. Crazed Hearts (Grimm's Circle, 3) is his complete story.
I'm not a fan of short stories or in betweens because I always feel like there should be more. Not bad. Good characters, though I wasn't terribly fond of one, and a set up to read the former and the latter novels. Fairy tale based rewrite with angels--a veritable smorgasbord.
I was prepared to dismiss this little story, but found the characters interesting and perhaps worth pursuing. Elle has had a history with two men. Michael, her first and last and Ren, with whom she was with for a long time. Did I mention they are all angels? And this is their story.
If you have not read the book before this one it does not really make sense. I have not read it so I did not really understand the reasoning behind the characters actions. It also did not make me want to read any of the other books in the story to help me understand this one.
I found this for free at the Kindle store along with a few others in the series. It wasn't really to my taste, little too much angst and being a short, not enough real plot. I almost stopped reading mid way through but it is such a short story, I couldn't let myself.
Maybe if I had read some of the others in the series I would of understood this short story better. But this story is just weird. This was a free book in the Kindle Store.
