Rate this book
When a seventy-one-year-old man is shot dead in his home, it seems like a random act of violence. But the hundreds of photos of Detective Tori Hunter found at the scene seem to say otherwise. Booted from the case, Tori finds herself going it alone, searching for answers about the long-ago murder of her family. Tori doesn’t just want justice. She wants revenge. Gerri Hill

Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix.
Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends.
Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise...
"I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."

3.5stars!
The remarkable magic that shines in Gerri Hill's storytelling with those previous first 3 books in this series kinda faded with this book #5. But 'HUNTER'S REVENGE' at times is luminous and is a chilling police procedural nightmare that exploded into this dislocating piece piece investigation into the nature of how cops policed themselves back in the earlier years with no remorse. It also involves bygone era of crimes, police corruptions, cold blooded killings, friendships and Hunter mainly trying to find out who really had her entire family killed. Sifting through decade old records, notes etc... to pin down the real culprit after finding out the pawn who murdered them. Hunter took it upon herself and started piecing together the details of the past thirty something years where every revelation became more and more clear that it was a group of cops that put a hit out on her family. Then while investigating, it became terrifying because she could not foreseen the real identity of this elusive instigator, would turn out to be.
Readers might notice that there is little intimacy between Hunter and Sam plus Ms.Hill tried having all these characters that's mentioned, to each play a part along side Hunter's journey. It's not too dramatic just enough to quench readers relationship thirst. Also during the storytelling, the outcome appears completely predictable even a tiny bit tedious but it's still enjoyable.
I'll end my perspective by saying that this book #5 do resonates on lies cops tells, secrets cops hide and the lengths they will go to keep any truth from coming out.
It's worth my recommendation to readers of the Hunter series!

Hunter’s Revenge is book five in the Detective Tori Hunter series and I am so imbedded in this series I cannot say if this novel could be a standalone or not. I will happily recommend that you start with the first book just because this is an a stellar murder mystery series.

Hunter is faced with her brutal past when she is arrives at the crime scene of her next case. Finding out who murdered her family thirty odd years ago comes full circle as Tori tries to solve the biggest mystery of her life.

The much lauded and acclaimed writer Gerri Hill resumes her powerhouse series which started five years into her writing career. The perfect replication of tone and cadence of the earlier novels pulls you in from the very first sentence. You are back once again in Hunter’s life. The search for her family’s killer takes you through the darkest side of Tori’s personality and yet you never lose sight of her inherent goodness.

Eighteen years ago Hill created a character harbouring a deeply tortured soul with a steadfast sense of right and wrong. As a reader, empathizing and admiring Tori goes hand in hand. As a fan of Hill’s I could not have been more entertained reading Hunter’s Revenge.

Hunter’s Revenge is everything you could hope for in the continuation of her story.

We had to wait a long time for book #5 in the Hunter series. As a fan of Gerri Hill, and especially a fan of her mystery series, I jumped at the book as soon as I got the chance. And the author did not disappoint.

While I don't remember all the cases Tori and her team solved, I do remember her own story pretty well. The evolution she went through as a police officer and as a person, and the fact that through Sam she eventually also found the belief that she deserved a little happiness, still sticks in my mind.

Tori and her partner Casey are wondering and curious when they find hundreds of photos of Tori pinned to a wall at the scene of a supposedly random act of violence. Photos of her as a twelve-year-old, after her family was killed and she was orphaned, until today. What does this 72-year-old man, shot for seemingly no reason, have to do with Tori's story? And when it turns out that the gun found in the house was the murder weapon used to kill Tori's entire family in the most brutal way, Tori is caught up in her past with full force, shaking her to the core. But after the initial shock, Tori becomes a bull terrier who, once she has grabbed a bone, will not let go, until she finds out what happened back then, even if she has to break some rules to do it, which wouldn't be the first time either. The only question is, is it really possible to find the truth after more than thirty years?

The story is narrated in the third person. most of the time we accompany Tori on her emotional journey, which is filled with rage and thousands of questions, as she discovers puzzle piece after puzzle piece, not always by entirely legal means, and slowly pieces together the incomprehensible story. The closer she gets to the truth, and the pressure on the masterminds increases, the more victims line the way. Can she put an end to it?

Besides hunting down and uncovering the details about the dirty cops of yesteryear, the most exciting part of the story is Tori's struggle with herself. I could feel her inner turmoil, should she follow the desire for revenge or stick to law and order after all? This fine line and the accompanying emotional roller coaster ride captivated me and let me feel everything she felt. The anger and revenge feelings, that almost overtake her, the great struggle within her not to just pull the trigger and take revenge, or not do it and feel like she has let her family down. Simultaneously she wants to involve Sam and Casey and don’t want them to get involved and protect them. Ultimately, she has to ask herself, is it worth giving up everything she has built with Sam, and the friendships with Casey and Lesley, her family of choice, for a brief moment of revenge? This is where Gerri Hill plays to her strengths, she did an exceptionally good job of bringing the feelings and emotions between the pages of the book.

When we are not accompanying Tori, we are following Sam and Casey. On the one hand, they want to support Tori, but on the other hand, they want to protect her too, if necessary from herself. And who knows Tori, knows that this is anything but an easy job. They prove once again how important they are for Tori and what it means to have friends who always have your back but sometimes also question your decisions and challenge you.

The plot is exciting and has a good pace with a not-so-unexpected finale, action guaranteed. A stirring and involving reappraisal of Tori's family tragedy in the classic mystery/thriller style of Gerri Hill. Even billed as the final book in the series, I still hope we get more of Tori, Sam, and their friends. I just love this group of women.

Highly recommended to all Tori Hunter and mystery fans. But you have to read the books in order, to understand everything.

I was so excited when I heard we'd get a final chapter to Tori Hunter's story, particularly as it centres around what happened to her family. Tori Hunter is a character that will absolutely stay in my mind for years to come. When I read her background in Hunter's Way, I wanted to know more about what happened and I was so glad I got my answers in Hunter's Revenge.

We begin this book with Tori and Casey attending a run-of-the-mill homicide investigation. What begins as routine, soon sets off Tori on a list of questions that need answers and I really loved the way Gerri Hill unfolds this crime novel. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle that Tori and her team fit together, which made it a compelling read from start to finish. Tori and Sam's relationship is still a joy to read, but it did take a bit of a back burner while Tori got her long awaited answers to why her family was murdered. This story is packed full of action too, which is typical for a Tori Hunter novel.

I could wax on and on about this novel, but I won't. If you've yet to read this series, crack on with it now. It is brilliant.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bella Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars. Some may have noticed I’ve been absent for a while, it turns out that home remodeling is really that terrible as everyone always says. It is eating all my spare time, but I will be back. I’m actually behind on reading my ARCs as well, so my apologies to the publisher for this.

This is the fifth and final chapter in the Hunter series. The Hunter books were some of the first wlw books I read. They resonate so well with me because they have a good mix of mystery, action and romance. You can imagine I was looking forward to this last book and had very high expectations. Were they reached? Not entirely, but this book does give that ending to the biggest mystery of Tori Hunter’s life. If only for that I would read it and I think fans of the series will enjoy this for the same reason.

This book is the last book in a series and I do not recommend reading this as a standalone, but do yourself a favor and read the entire series, it’s good. Many characters from the previous books return what makes this a party of recognition for those that have read the entire series. Tori and Sam are a favorite couple and it is good to revisit them although their interactions didn’t quite reach the depth and intimacy that I’m used to of these two characters in the previous books. I actually enjoyed Tori and Casey’s interactions best in this book. Since this is not a romance but a mystery it makes sense that these two partners shine in this story.

As mentioned, this book addresses the one big mystery of Tori’s life, the death of her family. When they are called to a murder scene they find some clues pointing towards what happened 30 years ago to her family and Tori is determined to find out who did it. In the absence of a romance storyline, the mystery has to carry the book and this is where I was a bit disappointed. The writing is well done as can be expected of Hill but the storyline was somewhat predictable and did not have crazy twists or “on the edge of my seat” action scenes that I’m used to from the previous books in the series.

In summary, fans of the series will likely enjoy this book as it gives that satisfactory ending to the series. The mystery in itself fell a bit flat for me, but it was good to see all the favorite characters once again.

Gerri Hill. Sigh. She's so good. Great at writing romance, great at crime thrillers. And with 40 books under her belt, she still manages to keep things fresh. I loved that she decided to revisit Tori Hunter and give her some closure in this last installment.

Hunter's Way is probably still my favorite of the series because it includes a good bit of romance as well. Tori and Sam's love story was beautiful, fun and sexy. Since they are an established couple now, there's little of that but it's great seeing them still incredibly happy.

There were many twists and turns and the story had a heartbreaking, yet satisfying conclusion. And Abby did a great job with the narration - revisiting the voices so they sounded like the ones we are used to. Such a terrific writer/narrator combo! Kind of sad to see the end of her storyline, but at the same time I was happy to spend more time with a great group of characters.

Look, Hunter's Way was my first contact with Gerri Hill's writing and Tori still remains my favourite character of hers.
So I think nostalgia undeniably played a big part in my enjoyment of this.
But even without it I think this book is good. The writing is good, evidence makes sense, behaviour makes sense and it is very satisfying that Tori finally gets her closure.
So if you liked the previous books, you'll like this one as well.

In 2005, Gerri Hill released, Hunter’s Way. This book would be the first in the series about a cop who doesn’t care about her reputation as being impossible to work with. She doesn’t care that no one wants to be partnered with her. She doesn’t care about much, really, besides her job and bringing down the bad guys.
18 years later, Hill has released Hunter’s Revenge, the book to wrap up the series, and what a perfect way to do it. Firstly, this is not a stand-alone. Reading or listening to the other four books in the series is pretty much a prerequisite to getting the full experience of the world in which Tori Hunter exists. These are all terrific books, and if you’re a fan of audio, Abby Craden is the narrator of them all, adding to the overall experience.
Hunter’s revenge is where Tori finally get’s the answer to what happened to her family and who killed them.

This story is the fifth book in the Hunter series and gives us closure to Tori Hunter’s past. Her family was murdered in front of her as a child. She suffered traumatically from this for her lifetime until she meets Sam and begins living again.

This is a murder mystery and police procedural that starts with Tori and her partner being called to a murder of an elderly man. In this man’s house are hundreds of pictures of Tori from the time of her family’s murder to present day. In interviewing the neighbor Tori is given a letter with details about her family’s murder.

Tori is enraged over this letter and starts investigating the cold case on her own. Sam and Casey are very concerned about Tori and secretly follow her to keep her safe.

The first part of the book was good and kept me interested in it. Midway it got complicated and repetitive. I would have liked to have more emotional interaction between Tori and Sam. I was happy to get to the conclusion of Tori’s past. And I think Hill’s fans will also be happy to read this final chapter.

Hunter’s Revenge by Gerri Hill is a novel I’ve been waiting years for. I’ve wanted to read this ever since I read Hunter’s Way, the first book in the ‘Tori Hunter’ series.

In Hunter’s Way we learn how Tori’s family was brutally murdered in front of her when she was twelve years old. The murders were never solved since there was no evidence left at the scene. The only witness (Tori) was so traumatized she was never able to give a good description of the murderer even though she looked directly in his face as he put the gun up against her head just before he walked out the door without shooting her.

Now after thirty plus years, possible evidence suddenly appears that may be connected to these murders when Tori is sent to the house of an elderly man who was killed in his home. One wall in the house is covered with pictures of Tori from the time right after her family’s murders up until just a few weeks before the man died. A gun is also found in a safe that turns out to be the Hunter family murder weapon. Tori may be close to finally bringing justice to her family, but it’s not going to be easy.

Hunter’s Revenge is filled with mystery and intrigue as Tori, with the help of her wife Sam and her best friend Casey O’Connor. There’s also danger and betrayal as Tori sifts through the load of evidence that sends her on all kinds of twists and turns.

I didn’t mark this story as a romance, but keep in mind the main characters are all already in committed and loving relationships. You will find plenty of love in these pages even though this book is mostly a murder mystery.

I hate knowing this is the last Hunter book Ms. Hill plans to write, but if the series has to end, this is the perfect novel to end it with. If you’re a Hunter fan, you don’t want to miss this book.

And thus ends Hunter‘s quest
Masterfully detective Tori Hunter commands our attention right from the start. She and her side-kick and best friend enter a sleepy older neighborhood. Buried and stashed away in this peaceful surroundings are the first, barely there threads of an old mystery. Threads which might unrevel a very cold case which pushes all of Hunter‘s hottest buttons.
The first few chapters set the tone for the whole novel. The succinct story-telling captivated me from the start and never falters: the short chapters are staccato style and a counterpoint to the slow poking into a cold case. The characters, the dialogue, the narrative are lean, razor sharp, focused - no unnessary embellishments and still everything is there. With a few strokes Gerri Hill conveys whole chapters of background stories. The inner struggles of Hunter are genius: how to deal with plain evil, deepest wounds and still remain on this side of good?
I have been following the Hunter series right from its start with Hunter‘s Way and think that the Hunter books are among the best stories Hill ever narrated - and that says a lot about this accomplished author who rightfully has been accumulating accolades for the past decades. I love the complex character Gerri Hill has created in Tori Hunter: The maverick detective who is good people though deeply wounded. Her slow journey and evolution. How Hunter despite her at times abrasive manner attracts the help and love of other good people and this presumably last book in the Hunter series comes full circle to close old investigations and old wounds.
If you must this book can be read as a stand-alone. For greater enjoyment take the journey of Tori Hunter starting with Hunter‘s Way, meet her wife Sam, her friends and enjoy the ride.

PS.: This conclusion to the Hunter series and the capstone to the Kate Delafield series by Katherine Forrest set last year leave me a bit bereft: Both series entertained me over many years and even decades. Kudos and many thanks for that.

This is the fifth, and final, book in Hill’s Hunter series. I guess you could read it as a stand-alone, I wouldn’t advise it. You will miss too much of the back story that is the main storyline of this book.

While I think the writing itself of this book is decent, the story choices are just a bit lacklustre. There is a lot of repetition- in scenes and sometimes even in lines. This seems a bit contradictory when I say the writing is decent, but when I talk about writing I mean I haven’t spotted typos or grammar errors, continuity issues, or just some other weird language related issues.

So, this story, it’s all about Hunter’s past and maybe, finally, finding closure. I think this book needed a little more body, for me, it falls really flat. It’s too many of the same things over and over again. These characters are lovely, but in this book… boring and too predictable.

The book has rather short chapters and while I was on chapter 17 I thought I was further along in the book, both because of the chapter number and where the story was heading. Unfortunately, I was only about half way along. You can understand how it dragged on after this. I think maybe the last 15% brought some excitement, but that’s it. And even the excitement was just a little flat. I never felt the tension you would expect with a book like this.

I was just a little disappointed with this book, it happens.

An absolutely brilliant end to this lesfic mystery series. Protagonist Tori Hunter is a police detective haunted by the murder of her mother, father, and siblings. She was left as the only survivor and witness. In this volume, Tori and the reader find out the who and why.

Thanks Gerri Hill for hours of entertainment and romance. Is a new series for Tori and her gang in the offing, please.

Sad to say, this is the first Gerri Hill book I didn't enjoy.
It is a long drawn out search for who ordered the killing of Hunter's family, 25 years ago. There are many, many suspects. So many I couldn't keep track of who was who. Who got killed, who was already dead, who lived next door or was retired. And then there are the phone calls....2 to this guy, 3 to that guy from this guy but not that one. Oh my. I stopped trying to keep track and figured I'd find out in the end.
The ending was exciting and the best part but only lasted one chapter. The "who done it" basically was the only guys left standing.
The constant pleading with Hunter to be careful, stop the investigation, turn it over to her lieutenant, etc. Got real annoying. If you've read the previous Hunter books you know how Hunter has mellowed so the way Hunter was acting seemed out of character.
And finally....I missed the romance between Hunter and Sam. Sam seemed to have very little influence over Tori and just waited at home for her angry soldier to come home. Casey played a bigger role, and how many times did Hunter and Casey have to say they loved each other?
No, this was not a typical Gerri Hill story.
The only promising item is, it sounded like there might be more Hunter stories to come with her new adventure. I look forward to those if there are some and hope they return to the old "Hunter's Way"

4.25 out of 5 stars: A thrilling conclusion to the beloved "Hunter Series"

“Hunter Series” may be my least read works by Gerri Hill, but it holds a special place in my heart, as it was with “Hunter's Way” that I first stumbled upon the author's treasure trove of literary wonders. With genuine anticipation, I delved into its final installment, "Hunter's Revenge," hoping to be reunited with the unforgettable characters, such as Tori Hunter and Sam Kennedy, and I was not disappointed.

"Hunter's Revenge" starts off with a bang, immediately immersing me in the world of crime and investigation. I found myself flipping through the pages, eager to uncover the next twist and turn in the plot. However, I couldn't help but notice that some parts of the investigation arc felt slightly repetitive. Although the actions remained engaging, I had hoped for a few more surprises along the way. Nevertheless, this minor drawback didn't deter me from enjoying the overall thrill of the story and the engaging character dynamics and plot development.

In conclusion, "Hunter's Revenge" may have some minor flaws in terms of repetitive elements in the investigation, but it remains a thrilling and satisfying conclusion to the beloved "Hunter Series." For fans of the series, this final installment is a must-read to bid farewell to Tori, Sam, Leslie, and Casey.

I had a slightly different picture of what was to happen when Hunter found out who really was responsible for the death of her family. Like really, she sat with her whole dead family on the table and that MF didn't even suffer, while he died. And Sam kept saying just revenge and choosing.. my God woman... that pissed me off. And Casey, you sweet baby. I still believe that MF should have suffered more. And the wife, as well. Idc. And that MF's reasons for killing her whole family.. man, that shit had me choking..

I was listening to this series a couple of months ago. I like book 2 the most, found myself cringing (and not in a good way) with book 1 and rolling my eyes at 3 with the almost carbon copy main of book 1. Anyway, I finished and just thought how after so many years, no installment came to give Hunter any closure about her family tragedy. Yeah, because I’m so unplugged, I was informed the book doing just that was about to be released! Even better, as all the others, it was narrated by Craden. So here we are and all things considered, Hill pulled it off well. I even see the end of the series or the opportunity for yet another book.

Tori Hunter is detective whose family was murder thirty years ago although she happy with her wife Sam whose also is a cop she always had in back her mind why was her family killed and may get the answers. Tori and her partner and best friend Casey arrive on scene of a man who been shot what more disturbing is the pictures of Tori since she was a child all on the wall of the murder victim and more shocking is the letter he leaves behind for her that gives her clues about her family murders. Tori is in a race to learn the truth but she doesn’t want justices she wants revenge will Sam Casey and Lesley keep her going off the deep end. This was a satisfying ending to this series and I’m going to miss theses characters but I hope we get to see them in other’s stories it’s was nice shout out to character of Cameron from Devil Rock hope we get see her and Andrea again along with C.J. and Paige. I love this author and although I love her romance novels I love her mystery thrillers more and hope she continue. I so would love collaboration with Gerri and Radclyffe with theses characters with Radclyffe Justice Series they do mystery thrillers well while having a romance in it.

So happy for Tori to finally get some closure on the case of her Families murders. The book started with a bang and a note left behind for Tori with clues to help her find the beginnings of a trail that leads to the men behind the murders. I’m so happy that she has Sam who loves and understands her need to find the truth of it. Also for her friendship with Casey. Casey watches her back and insist that Tori not keep her in the dark and let her help. I really liked how Malone protected his officers at the end. He knows they are excellent detectives and he always has their backs. I’m sad that Tori feels she needs to retired but she has definitely earned it. I love the family she has created since meeting Sam in book one. She was a lone wolf and now she has her pack at her back, fierce and loyal. She is surrounded by love as her family would have wanted. I’ve loved this series since the first book and it will always be a favorite of mine.

This is the latest book in the Tori Hunter series and it answers a lot of questions. Tori's family was murdered, and she catches a case where the guy has pictures of Tori on his walls. Turns out he is a murdered with a twist. She is given information about her family's murder, and she goes out on a limb determined to solve the case and get answers that she had always needed. No one thinks she has a chance after so much time has passed. Casey has her back as always. Sam is supportive and keeps Tori calm. It was a good story and if it ends the series, it was a good finish. I have always liked Gerri Hill's writing and this is another winner in my opinion. You will not go wrong in purchasing this book.

Gerri Hill returns with one of my favorite characters, Detective Tori Hunter. Hunter’s Way introduced Tori in 2005 and her then partner is now her wife Sam. When Hunter is called to a homicide she doesn’t recognize the victim but is stunned to find photos from her life covering his wall. Hunter’s back story is a mystery that hasn’t been solved. Her father was a police detective and her entire family was killed leaving her as a young eye witness.

This quickly turns into a fast paced, police procedural story. Her boss kicks her off the current homicide investigation but doesn’t object when she wants to look into her families cold case files. But when other bodies start connecting she needs to go a bit rogue to follow the investigation. She wants answers, closure and maybe revenge. But can you get that after thirty years? Of course her partner Casey O’Connor has her back and Sam continues to be a supportive and calming presence. An FBI friend also helps using computer skills to get key information.

I’ve read the previous books in this series in the last three years so the characters and relationships were fresher in my mind than if I’d been waiting for this book since 2014. Hill is a strong storyteller. She doesn’t include intimate scenes in this adventure but the connection between Sam and Tori is strongly felt through out the story.

This solves a great personal mystery from Hunter’s life but it doesn’t preclude new mysteries for any of the characters in this book. If this is the end of the road for these partners and friends, I can't think of better climax. Thank you to NetGalley and Bella Books for an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

Last book of the Hunter series! I am a fan of this series and love seeing how the characters have evolved.
This time, Tori is forced to confront the truth of what happened to her family. She has to remember and process her memories. Also, she wants revenge but she's also aware that doing so would ruin her current life. This book is more character-oriented. But for fans of the series, it's a worthy read.

Somehow I’ve missed this series. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. It means I now need to go and start at the beginning to see the relationships grow. Tori received a letter from the man who murdered her family years ago, bringing back the pain and anger. She goes rogue, looking into the past, but her life partner and her best friend won’t allow it.
