Isaac Asimov, a professor of biochemistry, wrote as a highly successful author, best known for his books.
Asimov, professor, generally considered of all time, edited more than five hundred books and ninety thousand letters and postcards. He published in nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey decimal classification but lacked only an entry in the category of philosophy (100).
People widely considered Asimov, a master of the genre alongside Robert Anson Heinlein and Arthur Charles Clarke as the "big three" during his lifetime. He later tied Galactic Empire and the Robot into the same universe as his most famous series to create a unified "future history" for his stories much like those that Heinlein pioneered and Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson previously produced. He penned "Nightfall," voted in 1964 as the best short story of all time; many persons still honor this title. He also produced well mysteries, fantasy, and a great quantity of nonfiction. Asimov used Paul French, the pen name, for the Lucky Starr, series of juvenile novels.
Most books of Asimov in a historical way go as far back to a time with possible question or concept at its simplest stage. He often provides and mentions well nationalities, birth, and death dates for persons and etymologies and pronunciation guides for technical terms. Guide to Science, the tripartite set Understanding Physics, and Chronology of Science and Discovery exemplify these books.
Asimov, a long-time member, reluctantly served as vice president of Mensa international and described some members of that organization as "brain-proud and aggressive about their IQs." He took more pleasure as president of the humanist association. The asteroid 5020 Asimov, the magazine Asimov's Science Fiction, an elementary school in Brooklyn in New York, and two different awards honor his name.

Nel tentativo titanico di recuperare tutto lo scritto di fantascienza prodotto in quegli anni che (almeno a me) sembrano gli anni d’oro della Fantascienza americana, queste raccolte curate dal signor Asimov sono perfetti modi di scoprire autori altrimenti persi di vista nella schiuma degli anni, non perdersi piccole perle e farsi una idea di che succedeva ai tempi. Confido di recuperare altri di questi volumi.
Nello specifico questo “1963” contiene qualche autore più noto come Simak o Dick, ma anche da penne meno celebri presenta racconti brillanti, divertenti, appassionanti. Molti di loro riflettono problemi della società del tempo (e anche quella ancora moderna) in modo acuto e interessante, facendo ridere ma anche riflettere, come fa la migliore fantascienza.
Potrei farne un sunto? Perché no, del resto non ho niente da fare a lavoro.
-La Nave Fortezza (Saberhagen): civiltà ormai scomparse hanno lasciato in eredità all’universo tremende armi da guerra automatizzate che annichiliscono qualsiasi vascello umano. Uno sveglio capitano concepisce un modo di illuderne l’intelligenza artificiale abbastanza a lungo da poter aspettare l’arrivo dei rinforzi
-Non in letteratura (Anvil): una avanzata civiltà scientifica parallela alla nostra fatica a riuscire a raggiungere lo spazio. Uno scienziato solitario cerca di proporre una soluzione inaudita ai problemi affrontati: la propagazione di segnali attraverso cariche elettriche in materiali conduttivi. L’approccio sembra però non convincere il buon senso regnante che basa tutto su impulsi meccanici.
-I veri ricchi (Brunner): uno scienziato pensa di poter sviluppare un sistema per raccogliere informazioni e profilare una persona analizzando l’ambiente in cui è vissuta. Questo piano coglie l’interesse di qualcuno di molto particolare
-un lavoro per il professor Gray (Simak): talvolta nella galassia ci sono beghe legali che possono essere risolte solo da qualcuno di molto esperto in giurisprudenza, e civiltà più evolute son pronte a tutto per poterli risolvere, anche se questo esperto ancora non sa nulla di diritto intergalattico
-Le facce dietro il vetro (McAllister): civiltà più avanzate si trovano a dover avere a che fare con una creatura un tempo umana, che scopre di incarnare il detto “volere è potere”.
-il pianeta caldo (Stubbs): una spedizione su un pianeta sconosciuto, la necessità di raccogliere più dati possibile tipica degli illustri scienziati ed eventi geotermici inaspettati formano un bel mix risolvibile solo da un tecnico radiofonico con una buone dose di intuito
-i mercanti di dolore (Silverberg): l’approccio capitalistico sensazionalistico della tv moderna applicato ad un mondo in cui è possibile mandare in onda anche il dolore fisico delle persone. Non può finire bene
-spegnere il cielo (Nelson): amore anarchia e società in un distopico/utopico futuro, lontano ma non troppo.
-due nella metropoli (Bester): una apocalisse nucleare, ina ragazza che si aggira per una NewYork deserta, finchè non incontra, inaspettatamente qualcuno. Perfetto, perché voleva proprio spostare un pianoforte.
-Bernie, novello Faust: un commerciale di New York si trova a contrattare con un alieno sui diritti di proprietà del pianeta Terra.
-Una Rosa per le Ecclesiaste (Zelazny): una spedizione su Marte si mette in contatto con l’ultima, mistica ed evolutissima, civiltà del pianeta. La possibilità di conoscerla viene data solamente a Gallinger, celebre e talentuoso linguista e poeta, unico a poter comprendere la lingua e la cultura di queste persone.
-Se non ci fosse Benny Cemoli (Dicks): dieci anni dopo una tragedia nucleare, le alte sfere del governo mondiale si trovano a dover fare i conti con una commissione di inchiesta che vorrebbe trovare e punire chi ha causato la catastrofe, proveniente direttamente da Alfa Centauri.

Has "Ecclesiastes." And "Bernie the Faust" was a hoot from start to finish. Anyway, yey!--I've finally read all 25 of these! :D

This is the final volume of THE GREAT SF STORIES series. 1963 wasn't a particularly great year for fiction but I still love this volume. My favorite stories were:
- "A Rose for Ecclesiastes" by Roger Zelazny
- "They Don't Make Life Like They Use To" by Alfred Bester
- "Turn Off the Sky" by Ray Nelson
- "If There Was No Benny Cemoli" by Philip K. Dick
- "Bernie the Faust" by William Tenn
- "New Folks' Home" by Clifford D. Simak

Nuovo appuntamento con la rassegna dei più bei racconti di science fiction raccolti anno per anno dall'esperienza e dal buon gusto di Asimov. Siamo ormai negli anni Sessanta e questo splendido volume raccoglie testi estremamente significativi non solo per quel periodo ma per l'avvenire stesso del genere: racconti e romanzi brevi come "La nave fortezza" di Fred Saberhagen, "Nessuna tregua con i re" di Poul Anderson, "I mercanti di dolore" di Robert Silverberg uniti a classici di Dick ("Se non ci fosse Benny Cemoli"), di Alfred Bester ("La vita non la fanno piu come una volta"), Roger Zelazny ("Una rosa per l'Ecclesiaste") e ancora di William Tenn, Ray Nelson, Hal Clement, Clifford Simak, John Brunner.

Una buona antologia di racconti, alcuni meno interessanti ma nel complesso tutti gradevoli, con quella perla che è "Una Rosa per l'Ecclesiaste" di Heinlein, che da solo mi ha ripagato dell'acquisto del volume in un mercatino.
