And it all began rather serendipitously. Long ago, as they say, in another time, when fast food hadn't reached our area and the only shopping was what the feed mill offered, I was reading a book that annoyed me .

My husband was lying beside me in bed, watching TV. Turning to him, I sort of petulantly said, "How the hell did this book get published?"

"If you think you're so smart," he replied, with one eye still on the TV, "why don't you write a book?"

So I did. And very badly.

I've since learned how to do, he said, she said, and a great variety of other adverb heavy, sometimes lengthy explanations of why my characters are saying what they're saying, along with finally coming to an understanding of what things like POV means. Point of View for you non-writers}.

Although, I still don't fully comprehend why it matters if you switch POV and I cavalierly disregard it as much as possible. So while my technical skills have hopefully improved, what hasn't changed is my great joy in writing. There's as much pleasure today in listening to my characters talk while I type as fast as I can, as there was the first time I put dialogue to paper--in long-hand, then, in my leather bound sketch-book.

UK EDITION SERIES INFO & REVIEW
Bruton Street Bookstore
Book 3
Formats: Kindle & Paperback (Same for the US)

The Bruton Street Bookstore series, courtesy Susan Johnson aka C.C. Gibbs, is published by different publishers in the US and UK, hence the different titles and covers. Series follows four titled bachelor friends in London in the early 1890’s.

These are stand-alones, but most enjoyed if read in order:
Book 1: (Year 1891)
Gorgeous As Sin (US) / Desire Laid Bare (UK)
Book 2: (Year 1892)
Sexy As Hell (US) / Promise Laid Bare (UK)
Book 3: (Year 1893)
Sweet As The Devil (US) / Temptation Laid Bare (UK)
Book 4: (Year 1894)
Seductive As Flame (US) / Intensity Laid Bare (UK)

JAMES, BARON AKA JAMIE: Scotish guard/$$$/dark hair/green eyes.

SOFIA EASTLEIGH: 23 years/daughter of a Prince/artist/blond hair/blue eyes.

Jamie, Baron Blackwood has been assigned with protecting the illegitimate daughter of the Prince Ernst of Dalmia. Jamie is determined not to end up in bed with Sofia. But independent and feisty Sofia Eastleigh, an artist and friend of Rosalind in book 1, has other plans.

This is my least favorite book in series, but it’s still an enjoyable and sexy read! I recommend reading it as part of the series.

I had a review all typed out, just a moment away from saving it and had a power outage. That just makes me mad. I'll have to write another one later.

OK, I back.

I've been a huge fan of Susan Johnson's book's for a long time now. I just LOVE how Susan can write a total and utter rake of a hero and Sweet As The Devil has got one in Jamie. He is the total package, charming, rich, all together a total hunk. He's hung like a bull and know's how to use it to give extreme pleasure all night long and well into the morning too.

The heroine Sofia was a very independent woman and also like to take her pleasure when and where she pleases. She had many men who lusted after her. The one thing that I must say about Sofia was that at times she did act a bit childish.

The story grabbed me at the beginning and then went down hill for a bit. By the time the heat started up, the story took off for me. I think this book could have been a five star for me if the story could have been a bit more............

For those of you who have read SJ's historical's know that the hero usually cheats on the heroine at some point. If that bothers you no need to worry, that was not the case in Sweet As The Devil. Both the H&h stayed true to one another and it ended with a HEA.

There is a preview for SJ's next release, It's called Seductive Flame. I'll be sure to get that book too, it's sounds really good.

Sweet as the Devil by Susan Johnson
Historical Romance -March 1st, 2011
4 stars

Lovers of Susan Johnson’s writing style will love this new addition to her lush historical
romances.

In this story, Sofia is a free spirited artist with a hidden past that she is unaware of. She first meets the dashing hero, Jamie while being summoned to paint the portrait of his current flame. Sofia is stunned by his blatant sexuality and wishes he is her lover instead.

While Jamie is attracted to Sofia, he is busy with his current and very demanding lover and knows he will be returning to Scotland soon. But fate takes a hand when Jamie soon finds himself sent as a bodyguard to protect Sofia. The passion between them flares into endless, decadent days and nights. But Sofia’s life is in danger and Jamie realizes he must not become too distracted by her allure.

If you have read this author’s books, this book will feel familiar. Her brand of lush even hedonistic sensuality flies off the page. As usual, the author’s hero is a man who can satisfy any woman and is wanted by them all due to his legendary sexual prowess. I liked that Sofia is confident in her sexuality and chooses her own lovers. As such, they are well matched. While erotic, this book is not as sexually adventurous as the author’s earliest historical romances. However, it is quicker to read since her earlier works were also more historically detailed.

Luxurious, lush and descendant this is a book to read on cold night.

I love Susan Johnson and I've enjoyed the hell out of her earlier books-- the over-the-top alpha heroes, the unabashed luxury and money, the rich detailing of her worlds. Oh, and the imaginative use of sex toys that seems to be a Susan Johnson special. SWEET AS THE DEVIL was certainly fun (well, except for the part where I forgot my book cover and was reading this crammed on a commuter bus next to an older woman who clearly know it was One of Those Books), but parts of it were just too over the top for me. And by parts, I mean the repartee between the hero and the heroine when they're getting it on in bed. In the carriage. And almost everywhere else. Case in point: "I do thank you for your kind attention, though," she amiably added, dropping her gaze to the bulge in his riding pants that put the lie to his refusal. "As a matter of fact, I'm wonderfully tingly all over-- inside and out-- inside mostly and very much so, thanks to you." Plus, what hero thinks to stock a carriage with not only clean linens should the heroine get her period, but an ivory dildo as well? And then the heroine uses said dildo, with the shades up, and falls asleep multiple orgasms later and still unclothed from the waist down? This book was fun, fun, fun, but more in the way you're at the fair and you're eating a deep-fried twinkie and you just know you'll regret it later... but it's a classic, so how can you resist?

I am a fan of Susan Johnson books, her rakish bad boys, her love triangles, and her cheating heroes don't bother me. I found Sweet as the Devil slow and just okay. It had a good story line, but I just didn't like the direction it was taken in. I didn't connect with either character, I felt there was a lot of words on the page, but it took forever for the story to develop.

*Note: Read and reviewed for The Season for Romance.

Miss Sofia Eastleigh had made a name for herself throughout London for not only being a great beauty, but a great artist. She was hired to paint the portrait of a London socialite when she encountered the irresistible James Blackwood. James had been visiting Sofia’s client at the time, who also happened to be his lover. They momentarily took notice of each other and cataloged how tempting the other was. However, it wasn’t until later that their paths would cross again and they would truly be tempted.

James Blackwood, although no stranger to sin or pleasure, took his job seriously and was damn good at it. He was in charge of the guard that protected Prince Ernst of Dalmia. The Prince lost his son and only heir and so in the hopes of protecting his interests, he placed James in charge of locating and protecting his long lost daughter, Sofia.

James knows exactly who murdered the princes’ son and is now after his land. He also knows that Sofia’s life will be in danger as soon as it’s discovered that the prince does in fact have another heir. He has no choice but to get Sofia out of London and across the Scottish border where she will be safest. Sofia on the other hand is not happy about this turn of events. Her father never played an active role in her life and now he wants her to carry the burden of being his endangered heir and despite how incredibly attracted to James she is, he has made it abundantly clear that he is only there to protect her. Sofia then decides that the only way to make this trip tolerable is to make sure that she changes James’ mind about the nature of their relationship.

In all the historical romances that I’ve read, Sofia is the most progressive heroine that I’ve come across. She was raised in a bohemian type of environment where people are much more open about intimate relations and it’s not considered improper for a woman to be too independent or to have more than one lover. Even so, I was a bit taken aback by how forward her character was. The development of the relationship between Sofia and James was instigated by her and was entirely sexual…for the most part. James was a typical rake so his reaction and actions were expected. It was Sofia who surprised me most.

There were things about this book that I enjoyed and things that I had a little trouble with. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Sofia and James. What started off as a sexual relationship progressed to a relationship with emotional value and meaning. During the course of the book, the act of sex turned into an act of love making. In addition, the plot was interesting and Johnson gave us some very dramatic and suspenseful scenes that punctuated the danger that Sofia and James faced.

Being an erotic romance, I understand that the reason for the explicitness and I had no trouble with that. Where I did have trouble was with some of the sexual situations that the characters found themselves in. Within the context of the setting, some of those situations seemed unlikely. The other area that I felt could have used a little more polishing was the language. At times, I felt that the dialogue was too modern for the 19th century.

This was my first Susan Johnson novel and overall, it was a satisfactory read with a pleasant ending.

This series takes place at the end of the Victorian era, in 1893. Sofia meets James as he indulges in an adulterous affair with the woman whose portrait she’s been commissioned to paint. She’s immediately attracted, even though he smells of sex (with another woman – oh yum, I know, right?). He is kind to her, while the Countess is not.

It turns out that James is the head of the guards for a European prince, and it just so happens that Sofia is the prince’s daughter. While I enjoyed this much more than the previous book, Sexy as Hell, I am turned off by the glorification of adultery and alcoholism portrayed in Johnson’s books, while at the same time I find myself wanting to applaud her for not being afraid to write unapologetic man-whore asswipes who aren’t your typical romance heroes. James is much more heroic than the heroes of the previous 2 books in the series, and his man-whorish tendencies aside, he really does try to be a good person and do the right thing. He has an innate kindness that I liked.

Sofia is shocked to learn that she’s the daughter of the Prince, and really wants no part of it, especially because she’s the target of an assassination plot. When she finds James is to be her bodyguard until the culprits are caught, she immediately sets out to seduce him, even though he tries to be noble and not sleep with her.

A few things other than the amoral nature of the characters bothered me. One is an editing issue. Every time the servants were referenced, they were called "flunkeys". Not only an ugly term that doesn’t make any of the characters using or thinking it look too good, but it was very repetitive. Also, a major plot point for me was that James was taking Sofia north to his Highland estate to keep her safe. It’s the premise on which the entire "road trip" romance is based. It was a big secret so that the Prince’s enemies wouldn’t be able to find her. Yet James tells practically the entire world he’s taking her to his estate. Just because he doesn’t disclose its location, does he think that the bad guys, high in the government of an allied country, won’t be able to locate it? It struck me as incredibly stupid.

So, it was better than the previous 2 books in the series, but still pushed a lot of buttons for me.

2.75 out of 5.

SWEET AS THE DEVIL by Susan Johnson is an exciting historical romance set in 1893 London. This is the third in this sexy historical romance series.(See Gorgeous As Sin and Sexy As Hell). This one can be read as a stand alone. When James a Scottish guard for the Duchy of Dalmia Prince Ernst is sent to protect Prince Ernst's daughter, and the true heir of Dalmia,James finds it hard to kept his passion in check. Sophia, the daughter of Prince Ernst, who did not know he existed,is not easy to ignore. She is beautiful, but rather plain, head strong, determined, has no problems with a sexual tryst,a sexually liberated artist, and wants a sexual tryst with James.James, is torn between his duty and his desire. The streamy sex scenes between the two are awesome.Their passion and lust for each other is fierce,at some points controlling, and could be dangerous for James. While they are truly falling in love,Sophia is being stalked by a killer, who has already killed her younger brother and friend of James. This is a lusty tale of suspense, love, romance, danger and a Devil meets a Princess with lots of passion and lust.A Must read for all historical romance readers who enjoy passion and suspense. It is a fast paced story that will keep you reading well into the night. This book was received for the purpose of review from the publisher and details can be found at The Berkley Sensation Publishing Group, published by Penguin Group and My Book Addiction and More.

What's wrong with this woman? She's so not lady-like, begging for sex all the time. Passionate heroines are great, but over-passionate one like Sofia is irritating for me. Can't she wait one more minute?

Seriously, I'm getting sick of erotica's heroines. They're obsessive about sex till the stage that I think they lowered themself to get 'it' from the heroes.
And the historical background. I don't think their dialogues match the historical setting. It's like reading Gideon Cross & Eva Trammell wearing gown and tux. (Why I always talked about Gideon or Christian Grey? Because they're the role model for erotica' heroes that pissed me off for their rude, ill-mannered, selfishness. I hate them and will absolutely kick their asses if they exist in real world))
I'm starting to think that people wrote erotica because they couldn't write good story to attract readers.

I hated Sofia! By chapter 13 I wanted to strangle her. I was so annoyed with her I put the book aside and read a Mills and Boon romance.
Then I came back and picked up where I left off and surprisingly, the book got better. I still couldn't stand Sofia, but Jamie's character won me over and saved the book for me.

He was a gentleman throughout the book, where she was a spoiled shrew. The politics got interesting and Jamie's return to Austria and consequent hunt for the bad guy was great.

It wasn't a great story, but there were redeeming factors, of which the heroine was NOT one. I've read it and I will not read it again. This book, along with the first 2 in the series are being donated to the library. Share the pain. :D

Sofia and Jamie were perfect for each other. I loved their journey to romance. This is a steamy romance, classic, Susan Johnson. The characters and settings were excellently done. And the history was accurate. Sweet as the Devil was fun to read if you're like me and enjoy the outspoken, modern before her time heroine. Sofia was a woman who knew what she wanted and she wasn't afraid to say so or act on her wishes.
And our hero, Jamie was everything a woman could want, a skilled considerate lover with outstanding stamina. And he was man enough to handle our infamous heroine with tenderness and indulgence. This is a great read.

Yeah, I kinda wanted to slap the "heroine" of this book. Props to Susan Johnson for never being afraid of writing female characters in the 19th century who love their sex, with many different men. It can be refreshing, except when the heroine is practically yelling at the hero during sex about what she wants. The heroine had a bit of a Veruca Salt syndrome going on. "I want to have sex with you and I want it nowwwww!"

Way too much 007 for my taste. It was really hard to keep up with all the spy stuff since that's not something that interest me.
Johnson's story telling is still exceptional and her writing is a lot of fun and easy to read. The romance, of course, between Sofia and Jamie was hilarious as always with Johnson's historical books! Loved everything about this book except I could have done with less of the spy stuff and more of the relationship stuff.

This steamy historical romance started out with an interesting plot but I was soon disenchanted with the main characters who both would behave one way then turn around and do the opposite. I started reading only dialogue but did finish. James is asked to guard the recently discovered princess Sofia.

Would have rated this book higher, but a word was used several times that I severely dislike. That is the "c" word in reguards to female parts. The sex was extremely racy like 10x that of 50 shades of gray which is tame anyway.

She is a new author that I just into love all of the book that I read by her. Love the way she put them together. But would have love to see how the other women in his life feel about him marrying the book store owner.
