I was born in Crescent City , California , a small logging town on the Pacific coast, home of enormous redwood trees and clear rivers. I have great memories of playing on stumps the size of small houses on my grandmother's acreage in a little town just north of Crescent City called Fort Dick . My sister and I would take daily walks to the main street store—an old, tiny white building that included the town's post office. The main street included just the market, a tavern (appropriately called The Stump) and a church we attended each Sunday morning. I loved that small town…and I still do.
In the early seventies my family moved to Washington, a state with gorgeous mountains, beautiful forests, and lots of green, which meant lots of rain, but I love all the seasons. I have wonderful memories of my childhood—a mother who was always at home, a father who worked hard to give us a good life, and a sister and brother who always looked out for me.
When I was all of 14 years old, I met Kip Templeton, my brother's best friend, and the man I would one day marry. Green eyes, dark hair, 6'1", and built like a Greek god , Kip had quite the reputation as a bad boy. I was absolutely terrified of him. Being that he was almost four years older than me, not to mention my brother's best friend, he was off-limits.
Yeah right…
Kip swept me off my feet and at the tender age of nineteen, I became pregnant with my first child. That same year I also discovered historical romance in the form of Kathleen Woodiwiss’s SHANNA. That book started a love of the genre that would spark a desire to write my own stories.
Two kids and many years later I sat down at my computer and started writing a romance novel. Realizing I had a lot to learn, I bought research books, and studied the craft of romance writing. I joined Romance Writers of America, and attended a Romantic Times convention. I went to every workshop and absorbed every word. I met authors like Heather Graham, Kat Martin, Virginia Henley and Susan Johnson who were all approachable and friendly. That trip solidified my desire to become a published author.
I sold six short stories to confession magazines, and felt like I was headed in the right direction when an untimely illness threw a wrench in my plans. Soon my focus turned from writing to fighting an inflammable bowel disease that would eventually cost me my large intestine in a radical surgery.
During my illness I had lost my desire to write, but eventually I felt that familiar urge to sit down and start a new story, and I did just that. I’ll never forget the phone call I received from Amy Garvey of Kensington saying she wanted to purchase the novel for their new Precious Gems Historical line. In that moment I had realized my dreams…and it felt incredible.
Since then, I have sold time-travel, historical, vampire and contemporary romances to Berkley, Avon, Ellora's Cave, Cerridwen Press, Hard Shell Word Factory and Triskelion. I’ve also made some incredible friends (Beth Ciotta, Jordan Summers, Tracy Cooper-Posey, Jolie Mathis, Mary Stella, Cynthia Valero, Patrice Michelle, Kathy Love, Arianna Hart & Kate Pearce) to name a few…who have gone through the ups and downs of publishing with me.
I still live in Washington with my husband Kip, who is my biggest cheerleader (I even talked him into modeling for my historical romance SURRENDER TO LOVE). Our daughter has left the nest but lives nearby and our youngest is attending college and still lives at home. We’re enjoying our lives and even bought a Harley, something we’ve been waiting twenty-plus years for. It’s a good life…and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Thanks for taking the time to read about me. I hope it gives you a good idea of who I am.
This was one HOT story and you all know how much I like those. Once again Julia gave me an easy fast hot read that I enjoyed. If you like your romances with plenty of hot scenes than give this series a try. This story could have easily been a 5 star book for me except the action part of the story did not start until 3/4 of the book was done. I must say once we got down to the nitty gritty part and the action took off, it was fantastic. The ending was also good and EVERYONE got their HEA. I'm really sorry this series is at an end and I hope that Julia will come up with another HOT series next.
Rory Rayborne is involved in a duel with a Lord Cordland after he and the Lady Cordland are caught coupling during a dinner. Rory makes no apologies for being seduced by Cordland’s wife (she did stick her hand down his pants after all, and couldn’t deny her since he’s a gentleman always seeking pleasure) since he loves sleeping with the married women of the realm. The duel takes a turn for the worst when Rory is shot. He’s sent to recover at his brother Victor’s residence and is very pleased since he’ll see Shannon, a maid that works there. Ever since Rory first met Shannon, he can’t get her off his mind and wants her desperately, as well as learn her secrets he knows she’s hiding.
Shannon and her brother Zachary O’Conner both enjoy working for Lord and Lady Graston. Shannon and her brother Zackary were former peers in Ireland, now hiding from their greedy cousin Clinton, who killed their parents for their fortune he believes should be his. Shannon doesn’t have a very high opinion or Rory, which grows to disdain, when she catches him having sex with one of the housemaids while he recovers from his gunshot wound. But for some strange reason she’s very attracted to him. As Shannon nurses Rory back to health, she starts a secret affair with him, knowing she can never have a future with him.
As both Rory and Shannon spend most nights in his bed, Clinton is close to finding her and Zachary. Shannon must make a choice to either go back on the run or trust Rory so he can protect her and keep her safe. But is she willing to give over her complete trust knowing what type of man he is and that he may never be faithful to her in both body and mind?
I’ve truly enjoyed Julia Templeton’s first two books in her Rakehells of Rochester series about three man whore brothers, who when they meet that one special woman, change their tomcatting ways. I was especially looking forward to Rory’s story and his romance with Shannon, an Irish lady who is not what she seems. Rory figures this out right away and will stop at nothing to find out Shannon’s secrets. Whereas I really connected with Rory’s two brothers and their journey as they claim their special woman, Rory’s story was unbelievably lacking in everyway for me as a reader.
My main issue with Rory, is that Rory is not just a rake to the tenth degree, but his only concern is his pleasure and satisfaction and nothing else. He’s obsessed with sex 24/7. Even as he’s suffering from a fever and is intense pain from his gunshot wound based on his selfish act in being with another man’s wife, he’s willing to be “tupped” by one of his brother’s maids knowing Shannon will come upon them at any moment. And when Shannon witnesses Rory in the act, she’s ashamed and mortified. Rory is also embarrassed to a point, but while he’s inside this horny maid, he ponders how he’ll go about seducing Shannon next.
Shannon comes across as a complex character, or should, but I simply couldn’t understand her attraction to Rory. First she knows he’s a man whore. Even when she finds him with her fellow maid, she has a justifiable reaction, but then the next minute wonders how Rory is as a lover and welcomes his seduction techniques. She knows his “Little Rory” has been in too many women to count without any protection, and yet she’s more than willing to take “Little Rory” in her. Now I know this is a romance and everything, and the idea of using protection may destroy the fantasy and all, but I was so turned off because I couldn’t help but think that Rory would pass some STD to Shannon.
Even as Shannon gives up her body to Rory and loves being with him as he brings her pleasure, she constantly second guesses that he’ll leave her since she’s just a lowly servant and he’s a sexual deviant with a furious sexual appetite and needs variety with his lovers. I just couldn’t understand why every woman Rory comes in contact wants him just because he’s a well known man whore. What does that say about the female characters who are attracted to a man like Rory just because he’s been with almost every woman in England?
I also felt the mystery regarding Shannon and Zachary was unbelievably tame and their cousin Clinton was a very one-dimensional pussy cat type villain. I also had high hopes for a secondary storyline regarding a close to degenerate sexual deviant worthy of Rory with the Lady Anna and the character of Marilyn who was introduced in Sinjin. This is a subtle lesbian romance that I hoped would be concluded in a nice way, but what happens between them was practically destroyed for no reason I could understand. The Lady Anna and Marilyn relationship had so much going for it, and at one point I wished they would have had their own story separate from this series, but for reasons not explained, they are left to secondary storyville where it was basically cut off and ended abruptly just as it was getting interesting.
As a whole, Rory was an unsatisfactory reading experience from beginning to end. Rory’s belief that it’s okay to screw any female just because he feels he’s entitled to it and the reasoning for Shannon accepting him just because he makes her all hot and bothered left a bad taste in my mouth. I had such high hopes for a romance about a rake’s redemption. But what I read instead was an erotic romance with demoralizing characters whose actions have no real consequences and a HEA I can’t believe in.
This one was such a disappointment to me. The plot is actually pretty good, and the secondary characters are also intriguing, particularly Anna, Marilyn etc, but I really didn't appreciate the hero or heroine and the historical inaccuracies just annoyed me.
First, while a maid would certainly nurse a sick person, any bathing or dressing would be done by a valet or footman. A servant woman would never be expected to do that, in some attempt at preserving her modesty, although, of course, maids certainly slept with the masters.
Secondly, there is a lot of confusion over the duties of the various servants. Shannon's brother is a groom, so he wouldn't have anything to do with serving food.
Thirdly, no one would ever get married outside. I understand, it would have been possible to marry in a house, although this would have been scandalous.
And on, and on... Servants would always wear uniforms on duty, they would never become "friends", no one with even a maid would open their own front door, let alone an aristocratic woman etc.
I mean, I'm not a historian, but this struck me as really sloppy.
As for the plot and the hero/heroine.... The hero is a selfish, self-absorbed, arrogant manwhore. My first thought was Yippee! But no, he stays the same arrogant manwhore, and actually comes across as rather dim. He's clearly got some kind of sex addiction, because he can't seem to go 10mins without whopping out his sausage and slapping it around. Now, I know this is erotica, but there is absolutely no interesting chase or preamble - he opens his eyes, she melts and away they go.
Which brings me to the heroine.. The poor girl has been running for her life, out-witting villains, learning to work as a servant and living on her wits. She initially comes across as a smart individual but, then she sees the hero's eyes and she's toast. I'm sorry, I just don't buy that Shannon would fall so easily for Rory, even though he is sex on legs. She seems an extremely intelligent, sensible girl, with absolutely no sexual experience at all. I really wanted for Rory to have to recant his ways and find a heroine able to resist him. I was disappointed that the heroine was such a pushover.
I LOVED the previous two books in this series, and I was so disappointed this one didn't live up to my expectations. 2 stars "OK", and that was for the sex scenes, and the gorgeous coverboy. I'm going to go and pout now...
Not everything is what it seems, yet some idiosyncrasies happen, so when someone is in danger you do your best to help. Food for thought: Will it be too late? Love this series about three close brothers. Enjoyed every minute.
Another shocker, Rory was a manwhore, completely amoral, Shannon was completely gutless, the plot twists were a bit better than book 1 or 2 but poorly realised. So many characters in the whole series that don’t go anywhere, like Marilyn, Anna and Thomas Lehman. Caricature of a villain, just poor all round.
Historical erotic romances are my favorite genre in romance, so I like to give every one a chance when I find them since they're a fairly small niche. However, I really haven't enjoyed the Rakehells of Rochester series by Julia Templeton, and while I hoped it might go out with a bang, it doesn't. Something I really noticed in this series is that this author has frequent love scenes, but they are only about half a page to a page in length and don't add anything to the story. They're so short that they serve no purpose, and they're so redundant that they get annoying. The couple in this story as well as the mystery and suspense throughout are okay, but nothing great. There has been a small secondary love story running throughout the trilogy between two women, and even that didn't have a satisfactory ending. The author is no longer an autobuy for me; I will definitely just be skimming her books in the bookstore in the future.
But I am committed to reading almost anything brought my way so this did get read and read fast. Now I will admit that I am not into historical romance so my review is slanted but I could not stop rolling my eyes at points. He's a man whore who is all about sex and she is a second place woman in the current social mores of the day--scandalous but also dull.
I was more intrigued by the subtle lesbian story, Lady Anna is a great character who deserved more than she got. And while I liked the secondary characters--I have not read the other books in the series so part of their importance was lost.
That said--a good trashy read, lots of sex which I skipped over but some fun moments. Not the worst book I have ever been given.
Hey fellow readers I don’t summarize the books (as there are always great full summaries written that I read myself).
I only give it my personal, general, summary of 5 stars to 1 star.
2 stars: No true connection for me at all. No real well rounded Development and interest in main characters, secondary characters, humorous, movement of the book, writing/conversation and romantic/sexual (1-2 scenes or over the top too many unnecessary) content.
Wouldn’t recommend and won’t re-read.
Would have a difficult time reading another book from Author but I wouldn’t cross the author out of my potential reads in the future.
I will have to admit this was my first historical type romance book I have ever ready, and after reading Julia Templeton's Rory, I can't wait to read another one. I was pulling for Rory the whole entire time that he would find the love that he so richly desired. There was passion and there was suspense all rolled up into one, so if you are looking for a book you won't be able to put down i would say to try this one out.
This was a good conclusion to this trilogy. The only thing that bothers me about these books and others set in this time period, which makes them historically accurate, sadly, is the "I-can't-possibly-fall-in-love-with-and-marry-a-servant-because-she-is-beneath-me-in-social-class" attitude, which of course, in some of them, is all 'corrected' when the heroine is discovered to be secretly of the nobility and the hero doesn't have to give up his inheritance/family/estate/money or whatever.
Out of all of the brothers I have to admit that Rory is my favorite. Perhaps its because of Rakeness. lol. But, out of all the books this one is my favorite, and thats not because its Rory's story. I actually like it because it had a lot more action than the other two. Sinjin's was good, had the crazy fiance dude. Victor's story I felt wasn't that exciting but it was still good. Rory's just took the cake. Have to say it's one of the better ones!
It wasn't as good as Sinjin but I thought it was ok and I enjoyed reading the book but doubt I would ever read it twice. Lots of sex but it was difficult to really get into the characters.
I honestly don't think it is worth $9 but then again I typically read Historical Romance and haven't read too many Erotica Historical Romance.
This is the last book in the Rakehells of Rochester series and I have to tell you I'm sad. These brothers are so great. If you love a good naughty book with heart this series is for you. I don't read many historicals anymore but won't pass up a Templeton. I was glad that we also got a look at the lives of the books that past. That's what makes a good series.
I wish this series never ended.. I loved the entire trilogy, the heroes were slobberworthy and the heroines were worth them. I loved the consinuation of one story into another, and the ending with the parents of the three heroes was heartwarming and heartbreaking in accepting what you knew was looming... I loved this series...author is moving to one of my all time favorites!
"Rory" book 3 in the Rakehells of Rochester series by Julie Templeton is an amazing historical novel full of Victorian decadence and debauchery, clandestine encounters and a delightful romance.
Loved this book actually read it several years ago and very sexy and I love love his bro books too. If your not into sizzling love scenes or historicals probably not for you. As for me, I absolutely love this writer and all her books have been wonderful!
I'd actually rather give this book 3 1/2 stories. I didn't think it was good as the other two books in the trilogy, "Sinjin" and "Victor." And the second half of the book was much more interesting than the first half with murder and mayhem scattered around.
