Awoman weighed down by her past. A man who knows her secrets but has never offered his trust. A threat they can’t ignore…even if it leads to their downfall.
Ronan has long given up looking to the future. Instead, she keeps her focus on the working, surviving…hiding. And she tries not to be overwhelmed by memories of a life she never wanted to leave behind. But secrets, like memories, have a way of taking you when you’re least prepared. The land is changing. Refugees flee from the north, children are going missing…and Ronan might have the key to both mysteries. Even though it risks what little she has left, Ronan finds that she can’t ignore a cry for help. Once she was more than this…perhaps she should be again. But once she stands to fight, there’s no turning hiding will turn to running…and she’ll have to face more than memories if she wants to survive. Which means a reunion with the one man left who knows her every Corwin. Even in the good times, Ronan never knew where they stood between friend and foe. Now, with no one to make them get along, Corwin has no reason to trust her and every reason to leave her behind. But memories have a way of drawing people together. And Ronan will need every ally she can find if she means to enter this fight. Bound together by a grief they can’t forget, both determined to enter a war they have little chance of winning…Ronan and Corwin may find that their hearts are more united than they ever would’ve guessed. And that has more power than the stories say…
Enter this dark fantasy story world full of fae, kings, and vigilantes…where loves both lost and found might be the key to saving them all. Great for fans of W. R. Gingell, Sarah K. L. Wilson, and Mary Weber's Storm Siren trilogy!
Just wow! This is a story about family that’s not family & having the courage to love again. It’s a story about fighting for justice & freedom for the oppressed, no matter the cost. It has refugees, sirens, 2 headed giants, all sorts of fae. All hope is lost, but Ronan finds she’s got more friends than she realized & more power than she knew. It’s absolutely criminal that the author worked so hard for the price I paid for the kindle book. I’m going to have to buy myself a physical copy.
This was such a good read! Ronan’s journey was beautiful. I felt her sorrow and slow return to hope and life. There were moments that cut me to the heart and then moments that patched me up again. Beautifully bittersweet. The sorrow, loss, redemption, love, and family in this book touched my heart. I can’t waiting to discuss this book with anyone who will listen!
(I received a free eARC in exchange for my honest review)
ARC review: This is the first book I've read by Maegan Simpson and and it blew all expectations away. Memories of Salt and Stone delivers a spellbinding story set in a fascinating unique world filled with fae and humans striving for survival. I loved Ronan and the slowly unraveling mystery of who she is and why she's changed. This story gutpunched me with its harsh reality of grief and injustice and wooed me with its sweet longing for life and healing. This story helped heal broken pieces in me I'd cast aside and made me want to hold the ones I love closer. I can't wait to see what Simpson writes next!
Loved the plot, characters, and themes. The only thing I didn’t like was she wrote it as if you knew the various kinds of Emyr and what they all were. Few explanations given on what they did. Other than that, I loved the book!
I never DNF, but I had to. Summary: broody. Good book if you’re looking for an emo read.
The world-building was right up my alley ( salty, dark and wild, which is why I purchased it) and the characters were pretty well-developed and consistent. I can see that the author was trying to portray grief, but it was just too broody for me. The character mentally revisited her losses constantly; there didn’t seem to be anything that didn’t make her think of her trauma.
In my own grieving experience, there have been ups and downs. At first, the downs are so far down that even a smile or a chuckle seem emotional highs in comparison. As far as I read, this character’s grief seems very stagnant, just always rock bottom, even as she processes memories. I’m not even saying another person wouldn’t grieve like that, it was just very hard for me to read.
I tried three times, because I think nearly every book has it’s merits. I finally got over 1/3 of the way through and decided I need books that lend a hand out of the heaviness of life’s difficulties rather than swimming (😆she’s a siren🤓)around in them for long periods of time, at least for now. Maybe things would have changed if I had kept reading, but at almost 40% I gave my self permission to put it down for now.
I’m not writing off the author, by any means. I may try more of her books. And I wanted to share my reasons because this might be exactly what someone is looking for. Just not me; not right now.
This story is heart wrenching. You can physically feel Ronan's grief as she can't get past losing the only one who ever saw the goodness in her. But don't despair. This is, after all, a book of second chances.
Her secrets unravel for the reader, drawing one into her psyche. New friends and old bring Ronan out of herself.
Ronan, Sylvia, Helia, and Corwin are well drawn. I felt like I knew them. Their desires, their fears, become your own.
And as the plot deepens, you cheer for the luminaries and their oath to protect the helpless.
By the end of the book, I didn't want to leave this world! It took me a bit to get into it, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The first half of the book has a LOT of italicized-for-emphasis words, which I didn't notice as much in the second half of the book. I think the author hit her stride halfway through and didn't need to rely on italics to get her point across.
One thing I must say. I didn't find out that the MC ("I") is female until chapter 4. That really bothered me and I honestly kept reading just to see how far into the book the author made us wait! The opening of the book isn't really my style, so this may just be a "me" thing. Having not read the blurb, it annoyed me that I didn't even know if "I" was male or female.
Could have used an actual professional editor, as words were missing and misspelled all over the place. (Affect and effect are different parts of speech! Lie and lay are different tenses!) The very last sentence is missing end punctuation. Is that done on purpose? Seems accidental and odd.
The MC's character arc is solid and believable. Her love interest arc is perfectly timed with great beats. The side characters are fleshed out well. The villians are given great motives and arcs. The world building is well done, leaving just enough to the imagination and explaining what needs told in a creative and full way.
3.5 rounded up to 4 for the star review. I enjoyed the second half much more than the first. Would *love* a dual pov from this author!
This is so promising! The author has a melodic and vivid writing style, and the ideas are interesting, but this book needed a much stronger edit. It is unpolished and rough around the edges. There are an abundance of ellipses and italics (as in, five to ten instances on a single page), and there are a myriad of grammatical issues. However, the bones underneath were good. I can see a stronger story there, if the fat was trimmed and some of the writer’s crutches were cleaned up.
The story takes its time revealing itself, and I enjoyed the slower pacing. The emphasis on found family and processing grief was handled in a thoughtful way. I also found the world building intriguing, but it left some large gaps. There’s a sense that the author forgot that her audience was not inside her head, and there are some key points of the world that we as the reader are left guessing at. The characters have potential, and I like the emotional thread that was driving the plot forward. The slow burn is actually slow, which I appreciated.
Overall, this reads like a first draft. It needed serious cuts and cleanups to be the best that it’s capable of being. A couple of passes by a competent editor would make it something memorable. With that said, I enjoyed this more than I expected to given the technical issues. The story has some powerful emotional beats, and took a couple of turns that I wasn’t expecting. The author is talented, and I hope she writes more (and invests in a good editor!).
Wow! This is the second Maegan M. Simpson novel that I've read and it was every bit as good as that one was! It took me a chapter or two to get into the story but as soon as I did I just couldn't put it down and I read until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer.
There was just something so entrancing about Memories Of Salt And Stone. I'm not sure I can fully put my finger on it but I do know that it had that magic something that totally immerses you in a story to the point you are almost standing there with the characters yourself. Maegan M. Simpson did a most excellent job with her worldbuilding. The countries, people, and magical beings were all wonderfully different and painted so vividly I could nearly see them.
Another thing that I really liked about Memories Of Salt And Stone was the surprises. Sure there were many things I could anticipate after having read quite a few fantasy tales and fairytale retellings, however there were many twists and turns - especially in the last half of the book - that were quite unexpected.
So, yes, I fell in love with Memories Of Salt And Stone and I am highly anticipating the next book in Maegan M. Simpson's new Legends Of Emyr series...
"I’ve been silent too long. I’ve been complacent too long . I won’t go back to that idle state again, no matter how crazy they think me. We stand against injustice, even if all others kneel. Once, that was my pledge. I won’t forget it again."
Memories of Salt and Stone is the first book in the Legends of Emyr Trilogy and let me just say, this is a stunner of a novel!
I was immediately drawn in by her compelling and well-crafted characters.
Ronan's story is bittersweet but a story worth reading. Her pain and haunting memories are all she can hold onto now after losing many that she loved.
Corwin is just as hurt by things of the past, but how can he trust a woman with a deadly secret?
I loved this twist on an enemies to lovers and how they were forced to work together despite a lack of trust in each other.

Then you definitely want to get this book on your shelf! Overall this is one of my favorite fantasy books. Definitely go check it out!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy from the author and these are my honest thoughts on the story. I loved Ronan as the main character! The entire story is told from her POV, so I felt like I got to know her really well. In a world where magical creatures and humans struggle to coexist without violence, she has a surprisingly nuanced view on her "enemies," viewing them first and foremost as individuals, not as symbols of their species. Her relationships with other characters were well-drawn and three-dimensional, and she herself has a lovely redemption arc. I loved how she interacted with Corwin, Helia, and Vasska. They all highlighted new facets of her character development that I really enjoyed reading about. It took me a few chapters to really get into the story, which is probably my own fault. I was reading two other books at the time and kept getting distracted. However, when I finally settled down and read it, the pages just flew by and I was deeply invested in the story. This was only the second book I've read by this author, but I know that this one is the first in a new series and I'm eager to see what will come next!
This one was a difficult one to rate. Why? Because I really really enjoyed about 75% of it, and after that I just didn't really any longer. So sad. The biggest part of the story felt mature, had depth and I just couldn't wait for the FMC and the love interested to start their journey together and was curious about her background and where the plot would go.
Spoilers: But once they got to the palace, it almost felt like the story changed genre. Side characters and antagonists didn't feel like they had the same depth anymore and I started skimming a little. I won't be picking up book two as apparently this isn't the story for me, but I may try another book by the author just because of how much i loved the first parts of the book.
Content warnings Coarse language: none violence & gore: moderate violence, gore is more mild if i remember correctly. s&xual content: none really. kissing only. no steam or spice.
This was my first book by the author, but the cover was so gorgeous I had to read it, and I'm so glad I did. This brought me back to the sweet romantic fantasy adventures I read in high school, but it covers some deeper themes.
The heroine is a killer, a vigilante of justice, a widow, and a warrior in the waters. The hero is the perfect combination of grouchy and smirky. And the world they live in with a combination of magical beings- like her- and mere mortals- like him is very well thought out.
If you are looking for a clean but profound fantasy with romance and adventure- not to mention a siren heroine- you've come to the right place.
Note to more sensitive readers: there is some fantasy violence and death, including the death of a child.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
The emotion in this book is so vivid, it's overwelming. There were scenes which left me gasping, heart aching and on the verge of tears. So much grief, sorrow, loss, hope and love coild up in these pages, that made it hard to breathe.
There are no words in my heart right now that could give this story justice, or express the love I have for Ronan and her family.
All I will say is this: I read it. I savored it. And long after the last word on the last page, I am left stunned by the beauty of it.
Loved the writing. Loved the characters. Liked the plot.
I do wish some things were explained more clearly. I felt like I was missing something sometimes. I’m not quite sure what it was, but was able to follow along well enough. And I wish the romance would have been a bit more towards the end. I liked the progression during the book, but wanted something deeper at the end. Even if she would have made that “Didn’t he know…” speech out loud so he could hear her feelings instead of just thinking it in her head, it would have been enough for me. Just a little something more.
I enjoyed this book very much, while it is the first by this author and I normally prefer dual points of view and more humor, I found myself charmed by the characters, their pains and flaws. It's a book that makes you feel as well as entertains, I very much recommend it.
I REALLY wanted to like this book. I loved the other book written by this author. A little too dark for me. Stopped reading at 45%. Maybe i’ll come back in the future and re-read. It just didn’t hold my attention. :(
This book is NOT light and fluffy. Most of the book is dealing with loss and working through those emotions. There is a little bit of romance thrown in. It was a good story.
Some might call it a slow beginning, but for me it was like I was gently put down in the heart of one who mourns. The slow reveal of background and identity was delightful. Nice work, Maegan!
Predictable? Yes A bit emo? Yes Captivating? Yes Lengthy? Yes But, I couldn't resist the budding love discovered surprisingly after deep loss. Their loss became their glue, and it was so sweet and tender to experience. Not sure I've read a book with this premise before.
Really enjoyed this book, the characters and the world building! The beginning was slow for me to get into but then it started to build and the plot got interesting! I liked how the chapters were broke down and the glossary of Emyr for reference! Definitely will recommend!
I loved it! So different and unexpected! Can't wait to read more from this author. Only note is I would have liked to learn more about the different magical races. A glossary perhaps?
TROPES 🟢 He Falls First 🟢 Second Chance 🟢 Found Family 🟢 Touch Her and Die
This is the first book of the Legends of Emyr series, and it provides a great introduction to the world. In this story, we follow Ronan as she leaves one found family and runs into another as she tries to figure out why people are fleeing from Tyrzen. What ensues is an emotional journey that forces Ronan to remember her past while fighting for the greater good.
I love everything about this book. The character development is on point. The worldbuilding is a steady drip that gives readers what they need to know when they need to know it without being overwhelming. The reality of the ending makes sense and is honestly what I would love to see more of in other fantasy books. All of the moving parts work together beautifully.
And then there’s Ronan, our main character. We truly feel every emotion she does, from remembering grief to her happiness. I love this aspect of any book I read, so this really added to my reading experience. Watching her and the MMC Corwin together is always fun. Their banter is great and watching them come to terms with their feelings is an enjoyable journey.
