"It was autumn, and the days were getting short and cold. A fire burned all day in the cookstove to keep the little house warm."Laura and her family are preparing for winter. Laura and Mary worked on their patchwork quilts at night and Pa chopped wood during the day.
Pa shares that he resolved to shoot the next animal that came into the clearing but when it was a doe and her fawn, he couldn't bring himself to do it either.
"He looked so strong and free and wild that I couldn't shoot him. I sat and looked at him until he ran off into the Big Woods."
The great thing about this story is that Pa ends up seeing the deer differently on this hunting trip, and he finds he can no longer shoot them. His hunter’s mentality shifts to one of compassion for the animals he is admiring.
This is a good book for vegetarian parents wanting to teach their child about having compassion for animals, and it presents a positive image in regard to boys/men not participating in hunting.
