About the author

Yukito Kishiro (Japanese: 木城ゆきと) is a Japanese manga artist born in Tokyo in 1967 and raised in Chiba. As a teenager he was influenced by the mecha anime Armored Trooper Votoms and Mobile Suit Gundam, in particular the designs of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, as well as the works of manga artist Rumiko Takahashi. He began his career at age 17, with his debut manga, Space Oddity, in the Weekly Shonen Sunday. He is best known for the cyberpunk series Battle Angel Alita.

3/5 stars for this volume and the series ~

Last Order pales in comparison to the original Battle Angel Alita (Gun Dream / Gunnm) series, which was so deep in its art, darkness, emotion, and hope in half as many volumes. This unnecessarily long series has very little coherent story even though it tries to invent an interplanetary community, and focuses way too much on endless fighting with bizarre creatures and none of the depth and character development that made the fights mean something in Gunnm. Reading both series is like watching an adult who fought so hard to discover him/herself reverting back into a violent, hormone-driven teenager. Don't bother, stick to Gunnm.

Color me impressed. Серия, что последние несколько книг упорно скатывалась ниже плинтуса, воспряла духом в 14-м томе и вывернула обратно на основную колею. Несколько сот страниц драчливой интерлюдии (надеюсь) остались в прошлом. У Алиты по-прежнему хвост, но меня почему-то это уже не смущает.
Недавно я расстраивалась из-за отсутствия новостей от Ходячей Антенны и жителей небесного города – и вот наконец у автора дошли руки рассказать, что происходит вне арены и как поживают старые знакомые. Я с опаской подхожу ко всем этим переключениям на другие каналы, боюсь, в любой момент Кисиро БАЦ и включит обратно свой турнир. Судить полноценно стоит только по итогам серии.

Из интересного: кажется, грядет трагедия. Сквозь весь том проходят намеки на апокалипсис в лице господина Подбородка. Он «ленивый» антагонист – всесильный и не видит дальше собственного носа, считая все свои поступки априори верными. Особо придумывать ему предысторию или мотивацию не надо, поэтому «ленивый». И оттого предугадать его действия становится легко – наверняка он совершит очередной «верный» (согласно своим убеждениям) поступок, только расплачиваться за это будет все человечество.

А еще слишком уж громко звучит голос надежды из самых низов. В моем словаре под меткой Gunnm это предвещает скорый конец (любым) голосам.

For the most part - I have been enjoying the Zott tournament for what it is - an excuse to have some great fights without much reason to have them. Its a tournament after all. But call me nostalgic, but I very much am into when Yukito Kishiro explores Alita's past. And in this volume, we get some of that on an epic scale.

In this one, we encounter another female Panzer Kunst! She's hidden in shadow for her entire appearance, but we still get to see her skills... and she is formidable. A flashback tale from Zazie shows us just how skilled she is and how much trouble she will be for Alita down the line... cause I assume that's where this is leading to. The rest of the book is about getting ready for the final battle of the Zott contest, and after all the building the Kishiro has done, I'm ready for it. Of course I want Alita to win, but he's done a great job of making us sympathize with the opposing team. This is a big contrast from the old days where it was pretty much, this guy is a bad guy, and Alita is the good guy and they fight.

Like I said, Im ready for the last battle, on to volume 15!
