Lauren Haney, a former technical editor in the aerospace and international construction industries, is the author of several ancient Egyptian mysteries featuring Lieutenant Bak. She lives in Sante Fe, New Mexico, and travels to Egypt at every opportunity.

Haney's novels have been published in German, English and French, and in the Czech Republic. The german editions of her novels have been published unter her real name Betty Winkelman.

মধ্যযুগের মিশরের প্রেক্ষাপটের ওপর ভিত্তি করে লেখা মার্ডার মিস্ট্রি। বইটাতে বেশ ধীরে ধীরে ছড়ানো হয়েছে রহস্যের জাল, আবার গুটানোও হয়েছে ধীরেসুস্থেই। গতানুগতিক মার্ডার মিস্ট্রির থেকে একটু ধীরগতির-ই। প্রেক্ষাপট একটু প্রাচীন এটাও কারণ হতে পারে। মাঝেমধ্যে দুয়েক জায়গায় একটু ক্লিশে লাগলেও বলা যায় ভালোই উপভোগ করেছি ভিন্নধারার এই বইটি। হুডানইট ঘরনার বই হওয়ার কারণে মাথা খাটানোরও সুযোগ রয়েছে। সবমিলিয়ে মার্ডার মিস্ট্রিপ্রেমীদের ভালো লাগার কথা বইটার।

A good entry in the Lt. Bak series is actually a prequel discussing his transfer to Buhen and the reasons for the transfer. He is soon investigating the murder of his commandment and falling in love with the deceased commander's wife. A good story of the 18th dynasty. Recommended.

This tells the background story of Lieutenant Bak and explains how he came to be a policeman. As such, it should really have been number one in the series, but here it is - number seven. A prequel.

Lt. Bak is sent to the city of Buhen to command Medjay policemen. He meets with the commandant and within 24 hours that commandant, an honorable man, is dead, murdered possibly by his beautiful young wife who is found holding his body and covered in his blood. Bak is immediately attracted to her and finds himself unable to believe that one so fair could possibly be guilty of murder.

He quickly learns that the commandant was concerned about a scheme he had uncovered to steal the "flesh of the god" Amon - gold. He believes that the thief or thieves are responsible for the man's death.

In short order, two more men are violently killed and the plot thickens. Attempts are made on Bak's life. Is he getting too close to the truth?

He follows every clue, doggedly seeking the truth and hoping that it will clear the name of the woman he has come to love.

This is a well-plotted and interesting tale, my favorite in the series so far.

ক্রাইম থ্রিলার হিসেব অনেকটাই ধীর। তবে আমার কাছে অনুবাদটা ভাল লাগল না। মনে হল খুব বেশি কঠিন। আসল ইংরেজি উপন্যাসটা পড়লে বোধহয় আরও ভাল লাগত। সব মিলিয়ে খারাপ না। আবার অনেক অসাধারণ কিছুও মনে হল না।

This really should have been Book #1 in the series since it's the beginning Lt Baks story and how he came to be sent to a dusty outpost to begin his work as a policeman. As such, it should really have been number one in the series, but for some unknown reason, it's #7 and listed as a prequel. Go figure that one out. Anyway...

Lt. Bak is sent to the city of Buhen to command Medjay police officers. There he meets with the commander and within 24 hours that commander, a respected and honorable man, is found dead...murdered and his beautiful young wife, who is found holding his body and covered in his blood; is suspect number one. Bak seemed at first to have been looking more at her than at the body of his very bloody and very dead commander. Several paragraphs are devoted to how beautiful and how attracted to her he was. He finds himself unable to believe that one so "fair and beautiful" could possibly be guilty of murder. I don't know what "beauty" or "fairness" has to do with being able to stab someone, but I'll take the author's word for it.

He soon learns that the commander was concerned about a plot he had uncovered to steal the "flesh of the god" Amon gold. He believes that the thief or thieves are responsible for the man's death. Very soon two more men are violently killed and as the saying goes..."the plot thickens". Several unsuccessful attempts are made on Bak's life, so he believes that he may be getting too close to the truth. He diligently follows every clue, seeking the truth and hoping that it will clear the name of the woman he has come to love. Believe me, that was quick.

It was, I guess an interesting tale even though it seemed the plot was a bit off kilter at times...and Bak was too busy "falling madly in love". It's not a bad story or a badly written book...t's just not my type of mystery; but if you know me well you know I probably read the book to fit a challenge category...so it well served its purpose, but I think I'll be leaving Bak to solve his murders all by himself....while falling madly in love:)

The Flesh of the God Amon . . .

is gold.
Not so precious as silver or the incredibly rare metal called iron, it is of rare beauty.
Men covet it.
But it belongs to the crown and the god.
And someone is stealing it, somewhere between the convict-worked mines and the royal cargo ships intended to take it north to the capital.
Haney's evocation of the 18th dynasty, most glorious in the millennias-old story of Egypt, is memorable. Worth reading if you love Egypt and even if you don't.

ভালো লাগলো। আমি রিভিউ লেখতে পারি না। তবে সাদামাটা ভাবে এগিয়েছে কাহিনি। একটা ব্যাপার আরো ভাল লেগেছে অহেতুক যৌন সুরসুরি নেই। অনুবাদ বরাবরের মতই ভালো, ফুয়াদ আল ফিদাহ'র অনুবাদ হতাশ করে না।

সূর্যদেব রা! মাথায় যার সৌর চাকতি, মিশরের সব দেবতার ক্ষমতা যিনি পারেন আত্মস্থ করতে। ভয়ংকর তার ক্রোধ, দিনেরবেলা সূর্য হয়ে কড়া নিঃশ্বাস ফেলেন মিশরীয়দের ওপর, রাতে পাতালপুরীতে আসেন বিশৃঙ্খলাকারীদের শায়েস্তা করতে।


মিশরের সব খনির সব সোনা এই দেবতা রা'র নামে উৎসর্গকৃত, একে বলা হয় 'রা এর শরীর থেকে ছড়িয়ে পড়া মাংস'। এই স্বর্ণ চুরির কথা কল্পনাও কেউ করে না। দেবতার অভিশাপের ভয় তো আছেই, সাথে সোনা চোরের জন্য ধার্য অমোঘ শাস্তি - রা এর পর্বতের খনিতে পশুর মত বাকি জীবন কাটানো।


কিন্তু তবু দুঃসাহস করেছে কেউ, চুরি যাচ্ছে 'দেবতার মাংস'। বুহেনে পা দিয়েই এই খবর পেল লেফটেন্যান্ট বাক।


মরুভূমি ঘেরা আর স্বর্ণখনি ঘেঁষা সীমান্তবর্তী দুর্গশহর বুহেন। শহরটা বিদ্রোহীদের কাছ থেকে উদ্ধারের পর এখনো ঠিক বসবাসের উপযোগী হয়ে ওঠেনি। এহেন রুক্ষ স্থানে আসার ইচ্ছেই ছিল না তরুন বাকের। কিন্তু অধীনস্হ সৈন্যদের নিয়ে এক বিলাসভবনে হানা দেওয়া আর উচ্চবংশীয় একজনের গায়ে হাত তোলার 'অপরাধে' প্রায় নির্বাসিত হলো সে এই মৃত্যুশহরে। দায়িত্ব পেল মেজাই-পুলিশদের নিয়ে শহরে আইনের শাসন সুনিশ্চিত করার।


কিন্তু, প্রথম রাতেই খুন হয়ে গেলেন সেনানায়ক নাখত। নিজের বাড়িতে অফিসকক্ষে বুকে ছুরিবিদ্ধ লাশ পাওয়া গেল তার। বুহেনের  তত্ত্বাবধায়ক টেটিনেফারের ধারণা, খুনটা করেছে সেনানায়কের কমবয়সী হিট্টি স্ত্রী আজ্জা। কিন্তু সুন্দরী আজ্জাকে খুনী মেনে নিতে মন সরছে না বাকের। নাখত যে মৃত্যুর আগের সকালে তাকে 'দেবতার বিরুদ্ধে কৃত অপরাধ' এর ক���া বলেছিলেন!


তার ঘরে লুকোনো পাওয়া গেল এক খন্ড স্বর্ণ আর দুটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্ক্রল। আরো জানতে পারলো বাক, ছাউনির চার সেনা কর্মকর্তা নে��োয়া, মেরি, পেসার আর হারমোসের সাথে সেদিন আলাদা আলাদা মিটিং করেছিলেন নাখত। হত্যাকাণ্ডের সময় এই চারজন উপস্থিতও ছিল নাখতের বাড়ির আশেপাশে।


রা'র পর্বত থেকে কে চুরি করছে স্বর্ণ - জেনে ফেলার জন্যই কি খুন হলেন নাখত? এই চার কর্মকর্তার একজনই কি খুনী-চোর? আজ্জা কি হোতা বা খুনীর সহকারী, নাকি নির্দোষ?


অনেক প্রশ্ন বাকের সামনে, কিন্তু উত্তর জানা নেই। এদিকে ফেঁসে যাচ্ছে মেজাইরা, দ্রুত সমাধা করতে না পারলে ঝামেলায় পড়তে পারে বাকও। মানুষের জীবনের কোনো মূল্য নেই খুনীর কাছে, দুষ্কর্ম ঢাকার জন্য একের পর এক খুন করে যাচ্ছে।


অচেনা অজানা বালুশহরে ভয়ংকর ধূর্ত খুনীর পিছে ছুটছে লেফটেন্যান্ট বাক।



মিশরভিত্তির উপন্যাস যাদের প্রিয়, তাদের জন্য দারুণ একটি রহস্যগল্প লরেন হানি'র 'ফ্লেস অফ দ্য গড'। গল্পের মূল নায়ক লেফটেন্যান্ট বাক'কে নিয়ে লেখিকা রচনা করেছেন আটটি উপন্যাসের সিরিজ। তারমধ্যে প্রকাশকাল অনুসারে 'ফ্লেস অফ দ্য গড' সপ্তম হলেও, এই গল্পের মাধ্যমেই বাকের যাত্রা শুরু। অনুবাদক তাই সিরিজটি অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে এই গল্পটি প্রথমে বেছে নিয়েছেন।


উপন্যাসটিতে প্রাচীন মিশরের রাজনীতি, সংস্কৃতি এবং চালচলন হত্যা-রহস্যের সাথে দারুণভাবে মিশিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে। রহস্যভেদের পদ্ধতির ক্ষেত্রে বাকের চিন্তাধারা দেখানো হয়েছে তখনকার একজনের দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকেই। যার কারণে এক সন্দেহভাজনের অ্যালিবাই হিসেবে 'নদীতে দেবতার সাথে দেখা হওয়া'কে বাকের মেনে নেওয়াটা বেশ স্বাভাবিক মনে হয়। কখনো কখনো বাকের কর্মকাণ্ড খুব বোকা বোকা মনে হলেও, বোঝা যায় লেখিকা তাকে চিন্তাধারায় একজন প্রাচীন মিশরীয় হিসেবে ফুটিয়ে তোলার চেষ্টা করেছেন।


পুরনো মিশরের পটভূমি যেসব পাঠকদের প্রিয়, বুহেন শহরের অলিগলি, বালুঝড়, সোনার খনি ও সোনা উত্তোলনের বর্ণনা, যাযাবরদের সাথে যুদ্ধ - তাদের যথেষ্ট আনন্দ দিবে। মিশরকে অন্যান্য বইয়ে সাধারণত মিশর বা ইজিপ্ট হিসেবে উল্লেখ করলেও, লেখিকা মিশরের আদি নাম 'কেমেত' ব্যবহার করেছেন বইয়ে। অন্যান্য কিছু প্রচলিত নামেরও আদিরূপ ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। তবে বইয়ের শুরুতেই নির্ঘন্ট ও মানচিত্র যোগ করে দেওয়ায়, পাঠকের বুঝতে একেবারেই অসুবিধা হবে না।


রহস্যভেদের দিক থেকে উপন্যাসটি খুব জটিল যে ছিল তা নয়। বরং বাকের ক্রমাগত ভুল পদক্ষেপ এবং বারবার পিছিয়ে আসা একসময় বিরক্তিকর হয়ে ওঠে। খুবই ধীরভাবে একটু একটু করে তদন্ত এগোয়। মরুভূমি এবং স্বর্ণখনিতে প্রবেশের পর থেকেই কেবল গল্পটি কিছুটা গতি পায়। তবু মিশরের প্রতি ভালোবাসার কারণেই বইটি আমার ভালো লেগেছে।


বইটিতে সৌভাগ্যক্রমে ছাপার ভুল খুব কম ছিল, সেজন্য অন্বেষা প্রকাশনীকে ধন্যবাদ। প্রিয় অনুবাদক মোঃ ফুয়াদ আল ফিদাহ-ও যথারীতি দারুণভাবে গল্পটি পাঠকদের সামনে এনেছেন। তাঁর নিজের করা প্রচ্ছদটিও প্রাসঙ্গিক ছিল। আশা রাখি পরবর্তীতে এই সিরিজের অন্যান্য গল্পগুলো অনুবাদেও তিনি হাত দিবেন।

It seems author Lauren Haney isn't ready to leave Buhen, even though she is transferring Lt. Bak closer to the center of Hatshepsut's empire. FLESH OF THE GOD is a prequel, Bak's first murder on the frontiers. Since the plot centers on gold mining and the gold caravans, it has to be based around Buhen. Thus, this is the time when Bak and his police force are first introduced into Buhen, and the Commandant is immediately murdered.

My pet peeve in detective stories is when the detective is a suspect. Not only is Bak's whole police force under suspicion - one senses a busy slanderous tongue here - but the such-a-darling wife of the Commandant is due to be packed off to the governor's court to be executed for the murder. A double whammy that makes no sense except it benefits the murderer in the background. Until we got away into the desert, I got no enjoyment from it at all. Then we were free of the mean tongues of citizens, and Bak and his men were able to prove themselves by finding the villain.

# 7 in this ancient Egypt mystery series. A proud officer in the service of Queen Hatshepsut, it was Lieutenant Bak's great misfortune to lead his charioteers in a raid of a house of pleasure frequented by Egyptians of very high station. Reassigned for his transgressions, Bak is exiled to Buhen -- a fortified city in the most desolate part of the Nile valley where he put in charge of the police force of Medjays. This is a prequel which provides how and why ended up in this frontier post. He is unhappy with his posting and wants to return to his former position and post in Thebes. His first case is the murder of the town's army commander. Good mystery as Bak becomes personally involved as well as earning his spurs.

I am sad to see that there is only one more book in this series.

Lt. Bak is the kind of detective I love to read about. He's honourable, good at his job and tenacious. So when he has doubts about the obvious culprit in this latest narrative, he begins to search deeper into the life and work of the victim to find a possible alternative.

As per usual, the author has blended the mystery and the culture seamlessly into another great volume of one of my favorite series.

After a half dozen books about LT Bak and 18th dynasty Egypt the author Lauren Haney throw us a 'prequel' and I didn't have a clue.
Besides a great mystery, this fills in a tons of facts about Bak and his early development as a policeman.
Unfortunately what this means is I have only one more book to read and I'm done with the series (unless Haney elides to start writing again- and I wish she would).

Light reading along the vein of Elizabeth Peters. Was a good book to keep in the car for wait in those long lines.
