Author: Barbara Freethy
First published: 2010
Length: 369 pages, 3974 kindle locations
Setting: Contemporary. Angel’s Bay, California.
Sex: Explicit-ish. Infrequent.
Hero: Fisherman - takes people out for casual cruises/fishing.
Heroine: wannabe baker
Trigger: Lauren’s father has (early stages) dementia.
Includes: Excerpts from In Shelter Cove and The Way Back Home by Barbara Freethy

Small town series with overlapping, ongoing story arcs.

In On Shadow Beach we tackle the historic death of a teen (Lauren’s sister), Colin in a coma and the imminent birth of Colin and Kara’s baby, the demise of Joe’s marriage and a pregnant teenager, as well as the ongoing saga of the boat wreck with the original settlers/angels on the cliff face.

It’s an interesting enough story, if a little slow. The attempt to include the boat wreck felt clunky and the ultimate resolution of Abby’s death was forced and unsatisfying. Not exactly sure why the killer did it, or how it was actually managed *grimace*.

Overall, it works. I am interested in continuing on. But…

Angel’s Bay:
Book 1 Suddenly One Summer (2009) - Jenna Davies and Reid Tanner
Book 2 On Shadow Beach (2010) - Lauren Jamison and Shane Murray
Book 3 In Shelter Cove (2010) - Brianna Kane and Jason Marlow
Book 4 At Hidden Falls (2011) - Isabella Silviera and Nick Hartley
Book 5 Garden of Secrets (2011) - Charlotte Adams and Joe Silviera or Andrew Schilling

I read book #1 quite a while ago, which I enjoyed very much. I enjoyed this one as well, got reintroduced to some of the characters from book #1 and met some new ones. It kept you guessing, who the killer was. I will try not to wait as long to read the next one.

This is my first Barbara Freethy book. My feelings on this story are mixed. I wanted to find out who committed the crime but also I thought the book was just overrun with characters that didn't need to be there. (possible spoiler alert ) For example: who is the father of Annie's baby? will Andrew and Charlotte get back together? will Charlotte and Joe get together instead? Did Rachel cheat on her husband with Devlin? is there any hope for Rachel and Joe? is Devlin going to continue with his movie idea? and I thought for sure that they were going to tie Jason to the shooting of Colin. I know I seem to be going on and on with my questions that haven't been answered but t it just goes to show how many secondary storylines weren't fully realized. It made me wonder why some of the characters were even there. There's always some characters in a story that don't really serve a purpose but this one had a lot. Most of the time, when you aren't privvy to a certain character's ending, you know enough about their story arc that you can pretty much figure out what's going to happen to them. There is just a lot of unanswered questions for me. Plus I think the epilogue was a little too neat and a little too quick. I think this book would have been better if it weren't bogged down by so many secondary storylines.

Suggest reading first book in series. It is like a soap opera in a book. There are multiple stories lines in each book. Some of the characters stories are a continuous from one book to the next. I am a sucker for happy ending and this book did not disappoint.

I loved the plot on this one but it has just a bit too much romance in it for me. She didn't need to be so descriptive... the story would have been fine without the details. Very interesting plot twists.

Number two in Barbara Freethy's Angel's Bay series, on Shadow Beach is a story that introduces a new hero and heroine as well as continues the minor stories from the previous book.

Summary:
Lauren Jamison hasnt been home to Angel's Bay in a little over thirteen years. Not since her fifteen year old little sister, Abby, was found murdered in the basement of the old Ramsay mansion. Lauren, her mother, and her little brother moved away shortly after, not being able to deal with the memories, but Lauren's father refused to leave. He was closest to Abby and fell apart at her death. Lauren left behind a father she thought didnt understand her, her friends, and the first and true love of her life. Lauren had to come home temporarily in order to take care of her father who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She's hoping to get in, convince her dad to leave, and get out as soon as possible, but she never planned on coming face to face with her lost love, Shane Murray. Shane was the brooding, dark, handsome, bad boy she met her senior year of high school. Despite his claim of being apart of the enormous, well-standing Murray clan, Shane knew he wasnt good for Lauren, but she soothed the demons and wild thoughts that ran through he head. She was sunlight and flowers to his dark and dangerous. Lauren couldnt believe that Shane chose her. She wasnt at all his type, but he helped her come into her own. Quiet and somewhat shy, Lauren attempted things with Shane that she never would have without him. He brought adventure to her life, but it was destined to end, even without Abby's death. Shane had only ever wanted to get out of the Bay. He couldnt stay for her, and she had only ever wanted to stay. Shane also kept himself apart, not letting her all the way in while she wore her heart on her sleeve. When Abby was found strangled to death, Shane was seen with her earlier that night when he had told Lauren he would be fishing with his dad. He lied, and Lauren couldnt see past her grief and anger, and didnt defend him to anyone even though deep down she knew he was innocent, he would never hurt Abby, but she wasnt so sure about the claims that he was hitting on her younger, prettier, smarter, more athletic sister. She couldnt fathom how the man she loved and the sister she shared a room with could betray her, but it was possible. It was just easier to forget everything and move on. Lauren did that, even losing touch with her father (he never made any effort to be with his remaining two children). Shane moved out of Angel's Bay, moving from baot crew to boat crew. Wherever the water took him, until he wanted to come home again. Although he doesnt want to, he still cares for Lauren, and wants her to care for him againe, too, but he still holds secrets. While Shane and Lauren are pretending to ignore each other, Kara Lynch has remained at her husbands bedside while he is in a coma (officer Colin alynch was shot in the head during Jenna Davies' troubles). When her family criticizes Kara for willing Colin's food health so adamantly, she remains positive, knowing she cant give up. They are about to have a baby, she cant do it without him. She refuses to. But the stress and exhaustion is slowly taking its toll on the heartbroken mommy-to-be. When she's convinced Colin will wake up because she's in labor, she puts herself and her miracle child in harms way to be by his side, hoping for her miracle. when nothing immediately happens, Kara is crushed and loses what little faith she still had. it will take her perfect little baby and a food friend to help pull her up and maybe give her the miracle she was looking for. Dr. Charlotte Adams has been turning down her old high school boyfriend, now minister for Angel's Bay, for date after date. It seems Andrew wants nothing more than to have what they once had, but Charlotte knows that cant be. If she even considered getting involved with Andrew again, she'd have to come clean about some very bad and heartwrenching mistakes she made as a teen. Also, Charlotte has her more than a little crush on the very married police cheif. Cheif Joe Silviera has finally gotten his wife to take a chance on Angel's Bay. He moved them there because he found being a cop in L.A. Was slowly eating away at the man he was and turning him into someone he didnt recognize. Joe and Rachel had been together since they were fifteen, they have recently been growing apart, but she's finally here. Still, Rachel's presence isnt what he thought it was going to be. First, she brought along a Hollywood movie producer whom she says is just a friend, but Joe thinks she wants more, and the Producer, Mark Devlin, is stirring up trouble all over town. Second, their relationship isnt easy anymore. They cant have a simole conversation, they hardly eat a meal together, and their sex life is more of a duty than passion. Joe also has his worrisome feelings for Charlotte to think about. Even after running into Shane and getting too close, Lauren intends to do what she came for and get out, but a troublesome movie producer has stopped her in her tracks. Lauren doesn't like the idea of a movie being made about her sister's death, and some of the questions and information Mr. Devlin has come up with has made Lauren think about who the killer could be. Needing answers, she enlists the help of Shane to find out what she can. Unfortunately, the killer is still in town and getting desperate to keep their secrets. Will the police, with Lauren's interferance, be able to muddle through some new leads before another death occurs to keep the case cold? Lauren will need to put her trust in the one man she thought she could never trust again, and Shane will have to decide if he's willing to let Lauren walk away from him again or if he's done keeping a burden that should have never been his to take.

I loved Lauren and Shane. A first love is so powerful and I loved the parallel that Ms. Freethy made to the ancestors' first love that was lost in the shipwreck. So sweet. Again the supporting cast was great and we were introduced to a bit more in order to give us a little nudge into the next book in the series. Very romantic and suspenseful read. <3

When you finish a book and smile and say “I really enjoyed that” then the book meets all my expectations . This book checked all my boxes. Lauren Jamison came back to Angel’s Bay because her neighbors had called and told her that her Dad’s illness was much worse and she needed to come home. After her sister was murdered, Lauren promised herself that she was not going back home but here she was. Of course the first person she met was her ex boyfriend, Shane Murray, but he sure did not look like the boy she left. This is a story of facing your past and finding a new path to your future. Could people change and if so, did they need to? The biggest problem was that a film maker had also come to down to make a documentary about Lauren’s sister’s death and could that dig up old memories? Could he prove that the person who had killed Abby still lived in Angel’s Bay? Great book with twists and turns.

A misunderstanding between a man who doesn't know how to communicate and a woman who listens with one ear (because her Dad’s favoritism gave it to her sister) caused by a friend of her sister (which was murdered because of a journal) that was groomed and made to believe that abuse is love by an older man meant to teach knowledge, not exploitation of innocence and circumstances—and manipulated the friend to save his cheating, kink for fresh breasts ass. He really be thrusting his pdf file everywhere that contains no lesson plan.

I liked this book, the second in the series, better than the first. It wasn’t as predictable and I already knew some of the characters and their stories. Still not the great fiction that I’m looking for, but better than the last one.

Not my favorite book by this author. Too many unnecessary characters, and too many unanswered questions. I doubt I'll read any more in this series, but I have read many other books by this author that I did like.

Good read

True love never dies. It's hard to give it a second chance when it hurt so bad the 1st time it failed. Opening your heart up is hard to do but the best thing you can do. You never know.
