I have read this book twice and refer to it almost every day.
Outstanding resource. This book is an incredible overview of the research behind independent reading and the successful implementation of independent reading components into a balanced literacy program.
I particularly enjoyed the interview with thought leaders like Richard Allington and Linda Gambrell.
Very helpful resource for teachers doing reading workshop, a companion or buddy book to The Book Whisperer, lots of similarities. Reading leaders are featured at the end of each - one quotes Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers that "you have to really practice something over and over and over again to become skilled." Sample activities and forms and how to incorporate independent reading in content area classes as well. Substantial research references too.
This book had a lot of good reminders, but not too many truly inventive ideas or insights. It was a quick reminder about the importance of choice reading, and a good selection for someone just getting started with using choice reading in their classroom.
