Delaney West, a tough-as-nails private investigator who’s not afraid to break the rules, operates out of an apartment she shares with her grumpy orange tabby named Pumpkin. But when Delaney takes on a case to find the missing Jay Sutherland — a 20-something playboy with a rap sheet and a penchant for beating women — Del realizes this case is much more than it seems.

With the help of her father, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s, in a nursing home, Del discovers that the truth behind Jay’s disappearance is linked to a group called The Night Society. But they’re no ordinary villains. Anika, Jay’s girlfriend, is the only person who may know his whereabouts, but she harbors a dark secret that could pit Del against an enemy she hasn’t seen since her childhood.

As she delves deeper into this web of mystery and danger, can Del put aside her commitment issues long enough to save Jay and herself?

I really liked the way this one started. I found the dual perspective to be interesting and a great way to drive the story forward on parallel and eventually converging paths. I really enjoyed Delaney as a character, she was strong and tough and I found her to be a great protagonist. I also really liked the writing style of the story, it was active and engaging and really drew me in.

Things were clicking along and I was really enjoying the layers of possibility and confusion that were piling up about what was *really* going on underneath everything - and then about 3/4 of the way in there's a big revelation about a side character that threw me completely for a loop and felt like it was totally out of left field and didn't resonate with the rest of the story. It felt a little Deus Ex Machina, and while it was a character I really liked and I didn't mind the way it played out ultimately, it felt odd to be incorporated into the story as it was unfolding.

It ends with some cliffhangers but not in an inappropriate way, more in a setting-up-the-second-book way. Despite my slightly waning enthusiasm after the strange character and plot twist, I am curious enough about some of those cliffhangers to pick up the second book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my obligation-free review copy.

I'm sitting here after finishing this book and just keep sitting here thinking did I miss chapters? Where did all of this come from? Should I have known it was going to take this kind of a twist?

I was invested in this story until about the 75% mark and then it just started getting strange... Strange in ways I didn't see coming which was a positive but ways that just really didn't make sense to me.

The story had so much promise and I think if they had just left it with a psycic woman that had gone through unthinkable things as a young woman it would have had a much better flow, as it was that the last 25% was hard to get through.

There were a lot of moments that just felt rushed, and while that can easily be forgiven the direction the book took at the end was. I will say that the scenes with Delaney's father were well done, my grandma spent the last few years of her life in a nursing home with dementia and these interactions were very believable and pulled at my heartstrings.

All of that being said I would give this a 3.5 if I could, there were some things I really liked and some things that just had me shaking my head.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sterling & Stone for providing an advance copy, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well thought out and written. The characters were well developed and the story flowed well and kept me interested. I could definitely see this turning into a series with Delaney as the main character solving supernatural crime and I think that would be really fun to read. I was thrown a bit by the last few chapters of the book, it seemed a bit rushed and I agree with many other reviewers that one of the plot twists was very convenient. I disagree that it came out of nowhere, there was definitely hints of it throughout the book. Despite the last few chapters feeling a tad chaotic I thought it was still effective. The ending definitely set this up for a sequel and I look forward to reading it in the future!

Thank you to Netgalley.com and Sterling & Stone for access to this ARC!

This book was an absolute rollercoaster! At first, I was completely invested in the characters and loving the development of our main protagonist—then came the twist! From that moment on, it was difficult to stay hooked. It’s a thrilling blend of mystery and superpowers that will leave you breathless. If you love stories that keep you on edge with surprises at every turn, this one is a must-read. I would prefer it more if it was to be a series.

A fun and fast read. The main character Delaney is well developed and interesting. The mix of detective story and the supernatural was fun and there are some surprises too. I’ll be looking to continue this series.

Thankyou for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover but honestly, I’m too fickle for that. This cover was awesome and set a high bar for me. I am unsure however of how the elements on the cover tie into the book now after reading it through.

I found this book difficult to enjoy. It took a really long time to get into this story. Then in the last 30 pages werewolves and alternate realms were introduced into a rushed ending that left me whiplashed.

There were also some things that felt icky and racist in this story.
“She passes a group of young black men standing around a Supra, rap thumping through the car’s metal doors and into her bones.
They look at her suspiciously as she passes. She glanced away, not wanting to provoke them.
She feels a flash of guilt for assuming they mean her harm. Anika’s never considered herself remotely close to racist.”

It would’ve been completely normal for her be nervous of any group of young men eyeing her suspiciously. Writing them as black serves no plot purpose and is unnecessary. She also later again reflects on where the “old black man and the werewolf are”. Again it’s unnecessary as there is only one old man she could be talking about.

Then there’s the demon/monster that has killed numerous scary guys, sometimes in groups, who gets freaked out that the cops might be called?
“No way that b**** won’t rat us out! The cops will be here any minute!”
I haven’t met any alternate dimension face eating monsters in my life but I’d hazard they don’t really care about the police.

Talking about murder, there’s a lot of them that go unnoticed. This seems like an oversight considering how multiple cops were introduced as characters in the book.

Unfortunately the book itself was not enjoyable for me. I’m not usually overly critical about books, I normally find something to like in them. But this book felt like a mess to me. There were many questions left unanswered, and too many details and characters introduced that served no purpose.

The Secret Within by Sean Platt and David Wright is an urban fantasy novel about a psychic detective, Delaney West. Delaney has been hired to find a missing person, and his girlfriend, Anika, might be the only one with answers.

This novel started well and was exciting and engaging. I was into the mystery, and I liked the premise of the psychic detective. However, I feel like it failed to develop Delaney's character's supernatural aspects to sufficient depth early in the novel.

Also, it takes a wildly unexpected twist at the end, which felt very Deus Ex Machina / WTF. It reminded me of how I felt watching the end of Annihilation. Angry, disappointed, and overall unsatisfied.

Unfortunately, it went off the rails for me, and I would not recommend this book.

The Secret Within is a sci fi fantasy and it really look some strange turns. The main character is interesting and has come quirks due to her abilities and I thought that was the way this story was going but nope. About three quarters of the way in it totally changes and threw me for a loop that I'm not sure I liked. As a private investigator she uses her gift to try and help people the best way she knows but she pushes anyone away that tries to get close to her, for their safety as she says. While I enjoyed most of the book there were some parts that really confused me and left me asking more questions and not in a good way.

It's What You can't Remember

Ted and Mrs. Jennings are standing on the stage near the pulpit of their church. Ted is encouraging his gifted daughter, The Great Delaney, to come out and heal the people. As much as this 5 year old girl doesn't want to, she knows her Daddy is going to make her, so she steps out with a small smile on her face.

Out of the congregation comes a twisted old man in a wheelchair. Delaney knows something is very wrong about him but is pushed by her Father to lay her hands on him. She is engulfed by a smokey black cloud, she keeps saying, "Get out!" After an undetermined length of time, Delaney finds herself on the stage and her Daddy and Brother Clarence are casting out the demon.

Meanwhile, little Anika is hiding with her bear, Edwin, listening to her Father, Simon, fighting with her Mother. After Simon tears the head off of Edwin to scare Anika, she hides when they are fighting. But one night, when the fighting gets physical, Anika interrupts and she never sees her Mother again.

Fast forward to the future, Anika is a waitress. She and her foster sister were lucky to get out of the welfare system and were raised together by the loving couple of Ed and Judy Reynolds. Although, Chelsea has no idea what Anika went through as a young girl and, as a woman with a successful business and a loving husband, she doesn't understand why Anika is such a loser.

Anika, goes from one abusive relationship to another, getting addicted to pills to try to get away from the terror she feels inside. But she has gotten into a mess she can't escape when she loses $15,000 of pills her boyfriend, Jay Sutherland, entrusted to her. And now he's disappeared.

Delaney has become a private investigator and works from her small apartment. She is keeping her Father at the pricey rest home, Morning Sun, and her bills are stacking up. Delaney has done some consulting with the police department, helping to find missing persons even though she loathes using her psychic gift.

Coincidentally, Delaney is contacted by Marsha and Troy Sutherland to find their missing son, Jay. Troy is a bit of a con man, and is convinced that Delaney is a fake. Their first meeting does not go well. Later on, Marsha calls and offers Delaney twice her fee in cash and she goes to work on the case.

What seems to be a routine missing persons case is nothing close to that. The Secret Within takes you on a wild ride, an intimate look through people's personal thoughts, good, bad and extremely ugly.

From the book: "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can do that. The mind can overwrite memories that are too difficult to remember."

You will find yourself holding your breath, waiting for the next horrifying turn in the plot to reveal another pile of bones from the past or another shocking memory. People will change before your very eyes and, when the end arrives, you'll just want more. Is it PTSD or something much more nefarious?

Sean Platt and David Wright have created a combination super thriller, paranormal detective novel and all around great book. I can't tell if a sequel is in the planning, but I sure hope so. A 5 star read.

The Secret Within – Sean Platt and David W. Wright

I was given a copy of this story through Net Galley in order to provide an honest review.

Sean Platt is an American author who is also the co-founder of Collective Inkwell and Realm & Sands Imprints and writes for children under a different name.

David W Wright is also an American author, and has co-authored many stories and is also an avid cartoonist.

Delaney is a young private investigator, taking cases to help pay her bills and pay the home looking after her ailing father suffering from Alzheimer's.

She is hired by the wealthy parents of a drug addicted son who has a long rap sheet and a thing for beating on his girlfriend. This kid – Jay – has come up missing after reportedly stealing thousands of dollars' worth of drugs from his dealer. Dellaney fully expects this to be a cake walk - the kid either took off, did the drugs and has now wound-up dead or took the drugs got jacked by a rival gang and is now dead - either way not really a good outcome for the kid.

The only person who seems to have any idea of what truly happened and where Jay might be is his girlfriend, Anika. But she isn't talking and there are definitely some dark secrets she is struggling to keep hidden – and the addiction to the pills isn’t one of them.

But the more Delaney delves into Anika and what she is hiding – the more Delaney’s past and memories that have been hidden from her struggle to come to the surface. That’s when Delaney realises their fates are more intwined than she had imagined.

“The Secret Within” was a very interesting read and didn’t end at all how I expected it too. It honestly started out as a thriller story but towards the very end of the book all these supernatural elements started springing up out of nowhere. Nevertheless, it was a good read that had a really engaging storyline while the ending confused me for a little bit there it was still a pleasant read. The only thing that could have improved it was if the authors included more of those from the start the ending would have been a bit more cohesive.

This novel starts out fairly well, as a story about a private investigator with a psychic ability that can sometimes help her find what she's looking for, which is usually missing children, a change from her childhood spent as a faith healer in her father's church. Like many fictional private investigators, Delaney is a bit down on her luck and behind on her bills, so when a potential client calls and wants Delaney to find her missing son Jay - who turns out to be 23 - she takes the case. This quickly gets Delaney into Jay's world, which turns out to be heavily involved with illegal drugs. At the same time that the reader is getting Delaney's story from her, there is also Anika's story, which seems, at first, to be unrelated, but the connection becomes clear fairly early on, as Anika is the missing Jay's girlfriend. The story unfolds as Delaney continues to search for Jay, and as Anika tries to avoid Jay's associates in the drug world, who, when they can't find Jay, come after her for the missing drugs and money.

And then, about three-fourths of the way through the novel, the story takes a sudden sharp turn. It felt like something was missing; there wasn't enough support for the sudden appearance of additional characters, and the entire tone and tenor of the plot changed, becoming significantly darker and much more violent. Rather suddenly, a book that had been a fairly decent detective story, perhaps peppered with a bit too much profanity, became something else entirely - something that wasn't as supported by the beginning of the book as it should have been; it felt like chapters were missing. Likewise, the ending was somewhat abrupt; there was this huge plot complication that just suddenly... ended.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

this book gives me so much stranger things and venom vibes.

I wasn't able to fully connect with the main character; I found her annoying most of the time and lost it when she asked her cat, Pumpkin, to respond to her boyfriend of 8 months when he asked if he could stay over. Also died when she told her friend that pumpkin said no to her boyfriend staying over.

"Just the usual. He tried to sleep over."
"Ah," Seb says, taking a swig of his beer. "And?"
"Pumpkin said no bueno."
"Pumpkin. Of course. Not you."

Like no, that's not funny but borderline cray.

There was a lot of chapters written to provide background information on Del and Anika and didn't have much going on at the start. At about 60%, my initial interest and excitement for this book had died down a little and it felt draggy then. I was confused and had a lot of questions, thought I missed a couple chapters but no. The author used one of the last few chapters to explain everything -- one chapter to explain everything we've been reading and trying to pick up so far, everything about Del and her father.

I also thought the author wasn't able to bring out the "action scenes" in this book fully, or as detailed as I thought it would be, especially since the demon is sort of like the side "main" character.

This book might have been more enjoyable if it stopped at a psychic girl with a gift and her investigation on the missing person; the adding of all these mystical elements complicated things and confuses the reader. BUT i would definitely love to watch it if this was a tv series instead.

I recieved this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am quickly becoming a fan of Sean Platt and his team of writers. The books I've read thus far are ones that are marketed one way but very often are something else entirely! This one is no different - marketed as an urban fantasy I think it fits well into a few other genres as well, including horror.

Unlike some of Platt's other writings this one does not have an altogether tied up ending. It seems that there are many loose strings at the end, no doubt the purpose is to set the stage for a series or a duology at least. And for that reason I will have to be on the look out for additional books with these characters.

Platt and his team of writers always delivers a story that will stay with you for several days after you close the book. The writing and story lines always give the reader things to ponder, question, mull over. In fact the story just kind of stays with you - maybe even leaving you a bit unsettled, rattled, off base.

I do wish - just for the readers sakes - that Platt's books were more clearly marketed. As with another one that I reviewed (The Island) I think that a reader may pick this one up expecting one thing and get an altogether different thing. This is fine for people who don't mind surprises, but not so great for those who like urban fantasy but do not like horror.

Excellent work Platt. Thanks for the ARC

I'm not sure how I feel about this book.

Trigger warning: faith healing, demons, possession, abuse, violence.

I have some years of experience with the faith healing and belief in possession. The adoration of the congregation for the faith healer is very real. For a child, I can imagine that would be a huge burden. Definitely an intriguing plot device.
This book is unique and interesting but rather dark. As dark as it is, it also is hopeful.

As some other raters have mentioned, an unexpected and incongruous character, a deus ex machina, is introduced toward the end. I understand and appreciate the reasoning. It will be exciting to see whether that character returns and is developed.

Despite some flaws in the story, I absolutely loved the Delaney character. As one of the two alternating POVs and the main character, she made everything worth it. I will try the next book.

The Secret Within by Sean Platt and David W. Wright is a thrilling paranormal urban fantasy that will appeal to readers of all ages. In this stand-alone tale, private investigator Delaney West is on the hunt for her friend Anika's missing boyfriend Jay. Delaney soon discovers a web of mystery and danger that leads her to the hidden realm of her past, where dark forces are at play.

The story is engrossing and unpredictable, with a strong female protagonist and a host of compelling supporting characters. Platt and Wright's weaving of the supernatural and mundane worlds together creates a vivid and believable backdrop for the narrative, establishing the moral ambiguity of the characters and adding a touch of realism and depth to the overall story.

The Secret Within is a fast-paced, entertaining ride that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Platt and Wright's skillful writing and dynamic characters make this a fun read for fans of the paranormal and urban fantasy genres.

I just finished with this book, and I am a little lost for words about it. First off, I’m not sure what genre to put this in: horror, urban fantasy, paranormal? Whichever genre you want to call it, it was very good. The main characters were interesting, and we learn more about both of them as the book goes on as it’s told from both of their POVs. Even though I mostly figured out what was going on in the book, and at times it felt a little too emotionless, I really enjoyed it. I’m also interested in seeing how Delaney is going to deal with the knowledge she has now, and what comes next. Interesting book. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

The story is about Anika and Delaney. Anika boyfriend is missing and Delaney is hired to find him by his parents. Anika has blackouts and can’t remember things and Delaney has a gift that she uses to try to solve the case. The plot was interesting but the world building is little lacking.
I didn’t really connect to the two characters and I think it was because every chapter alternated with their POV.
The story did get a little better toward the end, but I most likely will not check out the next one.
The book cover really rocks.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.

The Secret Within is a paranormal thriller featuring Delaney, a rough private detective with a drinking problem, and Anika, a drug addicted waitress. When Anika her boyfriend Jay disappears, Jay’s parents hire Delaney to look into the case and find out what happened to him. Delaney has a supernatural gift helping her on her search to missing people, but finding Jay proves more of a challenge than she expected. The only one who might have an idea about Jay’s whereabouts is Anika, but she seems to be struggling with a darkness within her.

While the story was enjoyable and easy to read, it was nothing more than that. The book was not for me. While I did like the premise of the story and the writing style, I found that the authors used unnecessary descriptions of the gore and violence in their book, making the story both less believable as well as annoying to me. Why was the sexual violence necessary while it did not add to the story for any other reason than gore and violence? For me, it made the story less believable, because why was the perpetrator not stopped before the event, but only after?

All with all, a perfectly enjoyable book with some minor issues which I could not overlook while reading the story. Perfect for fans of an urban fantasy/horror combo.

2 1/2 stars. A bit horror, urban fantasy and paranormal mystery, Dleaney, a P.I. with psychic abilities was hired to find a playboy who disappeared. Secrets and a supernatural enemy that Delaney met as a child soon turned this relatively straightforward case into a twisted fight for survival.

I liked the characters and there was a strong sense of atmosphere (call it horror if you like). I have to admit that a lot of the story left me depressed but there is a strong ending.

This was a strange book, a paranormal mystery if you will, but the characters and the storyline soon help you forget all the usual tropes that go along with this genre. In fact, it has been a long while since I read a book like this, and I mean this good that it makes you forget the usual tropes that get your backup. This book had evangelists, psychics, private detectives, and a whole bunch of bad men and strange goings on.

This is the perfect "pallet cleanser" read you pick up between heavier novels and series. I found it fun, and I hope you do too.

Paranormal SciFi

The premise was unique and compelling. A storyline that wove together bits from different mythologies, urban legends, and religious folklore. Very creative.

The characters were interesting, but not so well developed that I felt any connection to them. They seemed a bit on the hollow side, even if we were reading their innermost thoughts.

R for violence, including sexual violence and language. No explicit sex scenes. Themes include murder, rape, domestic abuse, child abuse, drug dealing and drug use.

A mixed genre stand alone story that leans heavily on scifi and fantasy but has many elements of mystery and thriller stirred in. These authors are well known for keeping their readers interested as a story can turn quickly while taking the characters we thought we knew and pushing them in another direction. Delaney is a PI but she has some special skills that give her an edge......most of the time. She also has a past that she'd rather not share in public. With a supporting cast that is equally interesting, Platt and Wright have another 5 star read in their library.

An intriguing read. Both Delaney and Anika are cursed with a connection to the supernatural. Both have dark pasts, but little knowledge of their earlier lives. One is a drug addict and waitress, the other is a private detective who won't let anyone get close to her. They don't know each other, but a missing person's case brings them together. Their meeting brings dire consequences, but also answers and the truth about themselves. Recommended reading for fans of the supernatural.

This was an interesting read. Although marketed as an urban fantasy, I would consider this a horror in the vein of Stephen King instead. This was an fascinating concept, interesting plot, but extremely underwhelming ending. For all the buildup throughout the book, it ends with a clear set up for a second book and lots of unsatisfying loose ends

Warning, once you start reading you won't put it down.

This book mixes good and evil in equal quantities in a way you come to get your head round! Remember there is no such thing as black and white, only many shades of grey which this book has from start to finish. A great read and I hope there are more books in this series to come.

fun supernatural Romp

A p.i. with supernatural powers searches for a missing man. In so doing she learns the truth about herself and the mysteries that plagued her past.

This is a pretty good read. Plenty of action and a different riff on the psych phenomena. Crosses a lot of territory, exorcism, werewolves, etc but is quick and enjoyable.

The Secret Within tells a story of good and evil from two points of view and what do you know? There is a little good in the evil and a little evil in the good.
This story goes back and forth leaving you guessing while feeding you tidbits along the way. This reads like a psychological thriller.

If you’re into demon possession, then you’re gonna love this book. However, I never would have begun reading it if I'd known, and that is not how the book blurb reads. Getting past that, the action is good, the characters interesting, but I really dislike books that don’t tie up everything at the end. If you read this book, be prepared to be left hanging.

Hidden thoughts unhidden

Interesting combination of inhuman powers trying to live in a different reality. Patience needed to keep the main characters straight as how each ties into mystery. In the second half of book the reader obtains sufficient clarity to understand the mystery powers involved. Suspenseful ending makes the book worthwhile to read.

Well written page turner

I didn't hold out hope for this book. I have read so many recently that have overly worn storyline with cliché characters.

This had more. Good world- building without pages of boring descriptions. It had surprises and broken people without being a downer. Well done!
