(Jatkoa kirjalle Suuren Tyhjyyden reunalla ja kolmiosaisen seikkaulun loppu löytyy kirjasta Aika-avaaja.

Valerian ja Laureline matkaavat inkognito komentaja Singh'a Rough'an tutkimusaluksella muun, hyvin sekalaisen miehistön seassa.

He vaeltavat arvoituksellisessa Suuressa Tyhjyydessä, josta ei löydy enää edes tähtiä.

Kivien järjestys on kiehtova avaruusmatka tulvillaan painajaismaista fantasiaa...

Didn't make me happy, but it was quite all right. I finally got over the fact that the series lost their initial drive. But after a very long period of time I guess that's just normal. Kudos for a nice nod to Space Odyssey 2001 and Corto Maltese, kinda loved that part. Wolochs were pretty cool too.

Although we’re moving ever closer to the dramatic climax of Mézières and Christin’s opus I can’t help but feel, in all the building tension, drama, and excitement, a bit of sadness that it will be soon be over. I’ve even been a little reluctant to pick this book up as it brings me a step closer to the end. But there’s savouring something and there’s missing out, and I was definitely starting to feel like I was missing out.

Now with a very handy “Previously on Valerian and Laureline…” box at the beginning of the book you get the added bonus of a brief refresher on all the relevant points that came before, and with nineteen volumes before this one that certainly is a lot to keep track of. Valerian and Laureline are heading into the Great Void, a starless part of space where the universe is still expanding. Everyone on board the craft has their own ideas of what they’ll find out in the emptiness, each pursuing their own agendas, but seemingly happy to work together to achieve their aims. Forced to make a landing on a desolate planet they encounter giant carved monoliths known as the Wolochs, plus some old adversaries of Valerian and Laureline who appear to be acting as the stone’s emissaries, all hellbent on preventing any further exploration of the Great Void. The following confrontation results in a loss of crew and the destruction of the skiff that brought them down to the surface.

So on the face of it all the cards seem to be stacked against Laureline and Valerian, but the ever-resourceful Laureline has a trick up her sleeve (and not for the first time). There’s a determination to discover what happened to Earth and they just may have made it a step closer.

So this is a book with plenty of nods backwards to past characters and events, solidifying connections and revealing twists and surprises along the way. I particularly like the very blatant nod to Corto Maltese as one of their fellow passengers. Clearly a heartfelt nod to a much loved character. This most certainly isn’t a book to start with if you’ve not read any of the series before, but it’s certainly one you’ll want to get if you have.

Valerian and Laureline used to work for the Spatio-Temporal Service which protects the planets of the Terran Empire and its capital, Galaxity, in the 28th century. An event in 1986 where a disaster did or did not occur has wiped this timeline out of existence, displacing our two heroes in alternate time. They struggle to find what happened to their timeline and find that earth has been consumed by a region called the Great Void. In the previous volume our heroes have traveled to the Great Void and prepare to enter it with of day-dreaming explorers.

The heroes craft lands on a small planetoid, where they crew first encounter a group of massive sentient stones, called the Wolochs. These creatures' intentions are to destroy all possibly threatening civilizations. They are said to have no emotions and have waged war on all organic life in the galaxy, destroying several planets and allying themselves with all sorts of associates - a host of villains from Valerian and Laurline’s past. They discover their best hope is to use an ancient item called the Time Opener. They continue into the Great Void to find more.

Direct follow-up to Au bord du Grand Rien / Suuren tyhjyyden reunalla. A part of the grand finale of the Valerian series, and reasonably good one. As usual, Valerian is more a fantastical adventure in a "scifi" setting (not unlike Star Wars) than true science fiction, but this time the story manages again find the properly grand and mythical tone: Valerian is once again truly fantastical instead of being just silly.

In a mysterious twist huge sentient monoliths try to stop Valerian and Laureline from finding the lost Earth in the endless void. The story arc continues in search for the time opener. The art and the story are both satisfying although in typical fashion characters are not very fleshed out.

Well, this was better than the previous two books. Liked the thrilling atmosphere and darkness. Didn't fully fulfilled all the chances it offered.
