86 books310 followersMarija Jurić Zagorka was a Croatian journalist, novelist and dramatist, the first female journalist and second in the list of most popular Croatian writers of all time (by the 2005 poll compiled by Vjesnik, a Zagreb daily newspaper). Many of her works have been adapted to film.
She was born in the village of Negovec near Vrbovec, to a well-standing family, which allowed her a good education, but in spite of her talent and many gifts, her parents decided to end her education early and, soon after leaving school, married her off to a man whom she barely knew, a Hungarian railway clerk 18 years her senior. The marriage ended abruptly with her escape from the house, first to Sremska Mitrovica and then to Zagreb, due to her husband's and mother-in-law's abuse.
It was in Zagreb that she began her career as a journalist, which was a highly unusual career for a woman in those days, and because of that, she was frowned upon, humiliated and prejudiced against her entire life. She was forced to write anonymously, under pseudonyms that hid her gender, and hide herself at work so nobody would notice there was a woman writing for (and later running) a newspaper. This didn't stop her from being politically involved, fighting against the Germanization and Magyarization of Croatia, and fighting for the rights of women, which caused her considerable problems in life, both professionally and privately.
Urged by Bishop Strossmayer, Zagorka began writing historic novels, usually set in 16th, 17th and 18th century Croatia. She instantly became popular amongst the people, who endearingly called her "The Fairy of Zagorje" (upon publishing Grička vještica) and "Queen of Croatians" (upon publishing Gordana: Kraljica Hrvata). The critics and her colleagues, however, constantly put her down, ridiculed her work, slurred her as a person and as a writer, and deliberately ignored her in literary magazines and almanacs. Still, she kept on writing and published her works as a part of her newspaper so they would be affordable to the general public, adapted her own and the works of August Šenoa for theater, ran two magazines "Ženski list" (1925- 1938) and "Hrvatica" (1938-1940) addressed to the female public, and with her young female colleagues formed the Society of Croatian Female Writers.
Upon the formation of Independent State of Croatia, the magazine "Hrvatica" was forcibly canceled and her entire estate is taken from her, leaving her without means to support herself. Desperate, Zagorka attempted suicide, but luckily survived. Living in Zagreb, she saw the end of WWII thanks to the financial help and care of her loyal public. Despite her age and weak health, she continued fighting for the rights of women, even though it earned her the ridicule and animosity of her male colleagues, who repeatedly called her "a madwoman" and "mannish old hag", until the day of her death.
None of her novels have been translated into English, but two are available in German: Grička vještica and Malleus maleficarum. 11 of her novels, published in Croatian, are found in the Library of Congress. The exact number of the novels she has written is unknown, but it is presumed that she wrote around 35, some of which are lost forever.

Prošlo je već neko vrijeme od moje zadnje recenzije, i skoro godinu dana, od kako sam pročitao prethodnu knjigu u serijalu, pa ću nastojati opisati svoje dojmove najbolje što mogu i dosljedno prethodnim osvrtima. Po mojoj ocjeni, očito je da mi je ovo prva knjiga u serijalu, koja nije bila toliko upečatljiva, kao prethodne tri, premda je utrt dobar put u prethodnom naslovu, ''Malleus Malleficarum''. Najveća primjedba bi bila na činjenicu kako je ovo najkraća knjiga u serijalu, a i sam naslov aludira kako bi se radnja nastavila u idućoj knjizi, što ne ostavlja impresiju kako će se određeni zapleti razmrsiti, već, dodatno, nagomilati. Naravno, funkcioniralo bi bolje da čini cjelinu sa idućom knjigom. Sa pozitivnog aspekta, dopada mi se preseljenje događaja na Bečki dvor, kao i političke intrige, prožete zlouporabom moći, znanja i vjere, te snalažljiv i jak karakter ženskih likova, što samo pokazuje koliko je umjetničkog prostora Zagorka imala da obradi i razvije taj aspekt i učini ga organskim, neizostavnim dijelom ljudskog društva, u odnosu na svoje kolege pisce u svoje vrijeme. Ako su Vam se svidjeli prethodni naslovi, uživati ćete i u ovome. Jedna od želja mi je da se ovaj serijal pretvori u povijesnu TV seriju, s obzirom na količinu i kvalitetu materijala kojom obiluju ove knjige.
It's been quite a while since my last review, and almost a year, since I read the last book in the series, so I'm gonna describe my impression as best as I can and faithfully to the previous titles. By my grade, this is the first book in the series that wasn't so impressive as the previous three, despite treading on a right path from the previous title, ''Malleus Maleficarum''. The biggest issue is that this book is the shortest in the series, and the title itself alludes that the plot's gonna continue in the next book, which doesn't leave an impression that certain plots are gonna be resolved, but, rather, it's gonna get complicated. Of course, it would be much better if it was whole with the next book. From a positive aspect, I like moving the events to a court at Vienna, as well as political intrigues, imbued with the abuse of power, knowledge and faith, as well as cunning and strong female characters, which only shows how much of an artistic space Zagorka had to process and develope that aspect and to make it organic, infallible part of human society, in contrast to her male colleague writers of that period. If you liked the previous titles, you're gonna enjoy in this one, too. My only wish is to make this series into a TV series version, giving how much of quantity and quality of materials these books have.

Tako istančana knjiga do najsitnijih detalja. Mislim da je suvišno da je komentarišem. Ostaće mi u sjećanju do kraja života.

Nakon odlična prva tri romana ovaj mi je pomalo dosadnjikav. Središte radnje pomiče se s Nere i Siniše na bečki dvor i opisuju se bespotrebne ceremonije i radnja se oduljuje u nedogled. Tek se pri kraju romana počinje nešto događati tako da više očekujem od drugog dijela koji po mojem mišljenju nije trebao niti biti odijeljen jer je očito ovo samo uvod. Budući ipak jest odijeljen, moram ga ocijeniti posebno i time opravdavam svoju nisku ocjenu.
Umjetnička vrijednost ovog djela unatoč svemu je neosporna.

Drago mi je da se je priča malo maknula od Siniše i Nere jer vjerovatno ne bih mogla podnijeti tolike prevrtaje sa njihovom vezom. Ovako je još zanimljivije, dvorske intrige i Marija Terezija koja je bila prva i jedina žena carica od svoje dinastije. Sviđa mi se taj opis dvora i njihove ludosti. Još jedna knjiga u nizu koja mi se je svidjela.

Ovo mi je drugi put da čitam serijal Grička vještica i Zagorka me svaki put iznova oduševljava svojim opisima kako ambijenta, odjeće, tako i ljudi, ali kreiranjem spletki tako da radnja dinamično teče ne ostavljajući nam prostora za dosadu kao što je slučaj u većini romana kad uvodi traju po pedeset strana. Kod Zagorke toga nema, njene knjige se čitaju u jednom dahu.

Pravi istorijski roman, verovali ili ne...imala sam tu srecu sam da nekoliko nedelja nakon sto sam je procitala posetila cuveni Senbrun i ceo Bec i uverila se u tacnost informacija iz prve ruke! Toplo preporucujem, jer je izuzetno zabavna i poletna na onaj starinski nacin...:)

Jezuiti huškaju caricu protiv Nere. Ne odgovara im neko tako vispren i pametan ko ih drži na oku. Nera se ne da zaslepeti jezuitskim dogmama i lažima.
Nera i SIniša shvataju da je dvor veliki teret i pokušavaju bekstvo ali bivaju uhvaćeni.
Carica Marija Terezija naredjuje SInišino pogubljenje dok Neru laže da će joj se vratiti.
No, SIniša ima mnogo prijatelja medju neprijateljima carice i uspeva da pobegne i sprema osvetu...
''Vratim se u sobu i otpašem sablju. One noći oprao sam je suzama-ja stvoren da je kupam krvlju.''

Zagorka je odlicna kao i u prethodne tri knjige. Fokus je pomeren sa Sinise i Nere na kraljicu i spletke sa dvora, jezuite a pred kraj i na prestolonaslednika Josipa. Desava se puno malih radnji i zapleta ali nekih krupnijih vezanih za glavne likove u ovom delu nema - sigurno pripremanje terena za narednu knjigu.

I was more interested in the story happening in Croatia. The life and petty plots of people in Vienna aren't that interesting to me. That said, I love Josip and Rosenberg, their mind and direct comments on the silliness surrounding them makes me smile. I'm also sad not to see Nera and Sinisa together a bit more.
